What I like is the honesty of Renegade and So long London. In the sense she's asking because she just tell what she feels, even when it's not the right thing to think/feel. When she says "is it insensitive to say .. " she knows that it's not the best thing or the kindest thing to think and it's not really fair, but what if I feel like it ? Same with give you all that youth for free, maybe it's not just about a rough time but about years invest in a relationship that was never going anywhere, she's maybe. And maybe even if it's not fair, it's how she saw it when she has written the song.

As someone who long struggled with letting myself having feelings especially letting myself feel that are not "right", Taylor's honesty it's something I love. But it's normal that we don't have all the same reactions to songs when we don't have the same life experiences. Don't know if this is clear but I love these discussions because there is a lot of opinions that I don't get to here a lot

oh im not denying that it's honest, and she's perfectly entitled to those feelings because it is difficult to support a partner through their mental illness, and these thoughts often cross people's minds in such cases!! i think i personally can't stop thinking about the muse when approaching these songs - and this is rare because i usually always think from the narrator's perspective (which is. pretty standard and obvious lol) - but that's the beauty of it! Interpretation can extend past the perspective presented

So interesting that you see the songs like that (and honestly that's the beauty of music bc it can be interpreted many different ways)! I've seen other people refer to what Joe and Taylor were going through - at least in the end- as "the depression olympics" and I think that's what songs like renegade are referring to with the "pieces you can crumble into" type lyrics. "if I would have known you were going to treat being mentally ill like it's a competition, I wouldn't have bothered trying as hard as I di, which ended up with me dragging myself down" and less "well if I knew you were going to be depressed, I would have left bc that's a nuisance"

oh that's a very intriguing take! I can see how that connection is made (how much tragedy? How much sad did you think I had in me?), and welp it's a much kinder interpretation than mine so I hope I can see that perspective too when I play these songs someday!
