I think fandom tends to strongly misinterpret Nancy Wheeler's character as a whole, but right now we'll focus on the fact that drive for being a journalist is not because she wants to climb that job ladder to the top by any means necessary, but because she genuinely wants to use the medium as a means to help people tell their stories and be a voice for people who aren't being listened to/taken seriously.
Her first taste of investigative journalism was in season 2 when she was seeking justice for Barb, trying to find solid evidence to use so she could take down the lab for covering up the death of her best friend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In season 3, she was the only person at the Hawkins Post that took Mrs. Driscoll's complaints seriously and followed up with what was happening even after she had been humiliated, laughed at, negged by her boyfriend, and fired from her job at the newspaper. Getting to the truth, helping Mrs. Driscoll, and protecting the town was more important to her than being popular at a job.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, in season 4 she was the only person who truly listened to Wayne Munson and believed that there had to be another explanation for what was happening. Every other reporter in town was more interested in selling the Devil Worshipper turned Murderer! headline, but Nancy treated Wayne with care and respect - because she knows that the truth is often something more complicated to be uncovered, and that the people involved are more important than simply an easy sell headline.

In closing, being a reporter may be Nancy's career path of choice, but she chose this path and sticks to it because of how deeply and personally she cares for being a voice for people who don't have a voice anymore or are otherwise not taken seriously - as she has been in their same position before with the death of her best friend. She cares about people.

CHAPTER 6: DANCES WITH WOLVES! My Babysitter’s A Vampire! Fanfic!
Tumblr media
Grandma Weir at first wasn’t so sure what to think of it when the idea of Courtney attending school came up in conversation. She was a little worried of the possible consequences but when they discussed it at dinner that Saturday night, Benny stood up for her cause, promising that he’d keep an eye on her. That this could be really good for her, and it’d be better than her being left at home by herself everyday for hours on end. Grandma didn’t necessarily love the idea but she had to admit that she was very proud of her grandson for stepping up and it seemed he was beginning to understand the responsibilities. So she did end up deciding to pick up the phone and make a phone call to the school that next Monday morning.
The only thing that really sucked was that since they couldn’t get any previous records for  Courtney’s schooling, she didn’t have any, they had to lie and say how she’d been homeschooled up until this point but the records burnt down in a house fire. So she ended up getting enrolled at a Freshman level, and even with that there was a lot they’d have to work on if they’d want her to be even able to get away with attending the school at all…
So whenever there wasn’t some freak mission the group was going on slaying whatever supernatural monster, most of his free time Benny would come home and help teach Courtney how to read and write, some basic math knowledge, and then just as a bonus so she could survive in the house alone, taught her about how to prepare her own food like he’d promise.
And Courtney was so appreciative for it and excited, she could not wait until she was good enough to tell Benny how she’d read the entire “Space Werewolf” comic he’d given her by herself. Would definitely take her some time and hard work but she was determined to get there just as a way to thank him.
But also speaking of promises; Benny finally took her to the mall and she could get some clothes. Neither of them really understood style, but when Benny saw the men’s graphic tee section and how much of their stuff had werewolves on it like it was merch, he’d picked one up to show her, at first she’d laughed but then she actually wanted to try it on. Which Benny shooed her away from because that was probably kind of a weird and bad idea, if anyone somehow got any suspicions having it plastered on her clothes probably wouldn’t help, and wouldn’t look too good either. Benny knew that much, that was the section he knew Ethan and Rory to shop in and they were trying for her to actually resemble a teenage girl.
So he led her there. Honestly neither of them really had an idea of what to even grab, they kind of just looked at what options for colors would look good with her hair, and while not innocent in any shape or form, Benny did just kind of see stuff that he knew other girls to wear at school and recognized some of the type silhouettes and how they looked on the girls bodies and how he’d found them attractive, so when all else failed he’d grab something like that.
And then it just kind of turned into one of those cheesy movie scenes of the guy waiting on the girl he likes, as she went to the try-on rooms at the couple of stores they visited. Sitting on the little plush couches and maybe a couple times trying to not entirely creepily but just glance and see if he could get a peak of her while she tried the stuff on, and then almost a montage of her coming out and her asking if she looked okay in the various items, which he always would say yes to as she to him always did. More than just okay….
And he’d always have to snap himself out of it in between outfits and yelling at himself in his head. It wasn’t like this was a date...was it?
No...right?
Later in the night Grandma reminded Courtney that she hadn’t forgotten about that potion she was making for her, trying to get her memories back. But honestly at this point, she wouldn’t say it but she kinda just hoped that it’d never get completed because she didn’t really want them back, not entirely. Yes, she wanted to know about her family and see them again and try to explain to them the situation and why she couldn’t go back entirely, but she didn’t want to know the events that transpired to bring her here in the first place, so it’s safe to say that she was conflicted.
But Grandma did admit to struggling with it a little bit so with that she smiled, giving Courtney more time…
Besides, she wasn’t ready to tell Benny yet about what she’d seen.
Yeah she had to admit things were going pretty well now. It's been a few weeks and they’d definitely gotten to bond and get closer, with him helping her with her learning and everything. But yet again, it’d been going on a few weeks now, at this point and neither did either of them bring up that moment between them from her first couple days, or did another come up between them when they’d gotten that close again for another to possibly.
It seemed to Courtney that Benny was purposely trying to keep a little bit of distance between them at all times and it made her wonder if she’d gone too far before. Anytime that she had to scooch her chair in, he’d back his away from her. Anytime she threatened to close the space between them when standing at their lockers, or at home, even with his friends, it was like he’d cringed away from her if she even threatened to take a single step closer. Rubbing at the back of his neck and looking at her awkwardly. Or maybe the floorboards could really be that interesting?
And thus got her started back on picking at the skin underneath her nails, a bad habit from whenever she’d be nervous, or itching at her skin like she’d gotten a rash.
Speaking of being nervous; Courtney hadn’t been able to make herself transform since that night either. Seems it must’ve just been that she was able to figure it out in the heat of the moment with her emotions being so strong, but whenever she’d try to just do it casually at home, try to channel the power and become the wolf again, she’d always fail. The most that she’s been able to manage was once when she got as far as to make a few patches of hair start prickling up onto her arms, so she knew she had to be heading in the right direction, but just nothing was ever enough yet to push it all the way. And she just hated this feeling, like everything was making her insecure lately.
It seemed the only constant positive she had now was Rory always being around. He could be annoying sure; but he was the only one that straight up accepted her out of the get go. Maybe his intentions weren’t the best, but he didn’t judge her right away for what she was even though being a vampire, he was one of the ones with the most reason too. He could treat her how Erica still does. Alongside showering Benny’s grandma constantly kept stock of that potion to help keep Courtney’s canine scent under control, but even still Erica still made comments about her stench. She never would react not wanting to cause a fight but it did still hurt her feelings especially being that the only ones that seem to want to combat Erica for the nasty things she says and does; are again Sarah and Rory. Courtney understands that Ethan may still not be in love with having her around, but again in these moments Benny wouldn’t exactly speak up for her, but again just choosing to simply ignore it and stare at the floor in the awkwardness of the moment.
But Rory didn’t do that, whenever something mean was sad about her while Rory was around; he’d come to her defense. He always made really cheesy jokes or told stupid stories that always seemed to get Courtney blushing and laughing. He was becoming her best friend and she was so very thankful for him too. So much so that the rest of the group kinda always wondered if there was actually something more between them behind the scenes. But on Courtney’s end there really wasn’t. There couldn’t be thanks to her imprinting.
He was just always around to talk to and be kind in her moments of need, he’d always pretend to be this chivalrous knight, while she was this high princess or queen that he needed to cater to her every whim. Or it was just as simple as whenever her and Benny seemed to be going through a bit of a rougher patch and she’d be worried about not being enough for her grades, Rory would always want to jump in to try and help her study because he could see how important it was for her to do well, and he also didn’t want her to get thrown out of White Chapel either so, he did what he was able. Or she would also lose her spot on the football team..
***
Remember that story that Rory was trying to tell Benny and Ethan?
It was during that first day’s gym class, Rory had encouraged Courtney to want to play with them, although she was definitely nervous. But she did go to play and for a little while it was just some mind numbing fun, the girls kinda just found it stupid and couldn’t care less about  “waste of time” but Rory and her were smiling so wide they were having a blast.
To Rory it felt like the first time he’d had someone in his life who just seemed so genuinely so happy to be around him and having fun. He loved the guys and their friendship meant so much to him but he did quite often feel like he was being left out or abandoned, that they possibly didn’t like him as much as any of them did each other and so he was often left disappointed. But with Courtney he just felt this positive energy that radiated off her and her genuine smile as they had fun together. So much so that at one point of the game they decided to break their group in half and do it like teams, Eric and Sarah against her and Rory.
The girls obviously not really trying since they didn’t care, but the 2 of them didn’t care if they weren’t really in it, they enjoyed it anyways, but there was just this point when Rory threw the ball to her for “run past and make a touchdown”
Courtney threw the ball down with so much joy as she ran back and just tackled Rory. Almost knocking him down in a hug, she was surprisingly heavier than she looked, Then lifting him up above herself while screaming in glee. She was also surprisingly so much stronger as well.
“HEY! YOU NERDS!” But their celebration was cut short by some pretty meathead type jocks. A group of 3 giant guys came running up wearing their jerseys and were all suited up with their shoulder pads, helmets, and mouth guards on. The one guy spitting his out to come yell at them.
“WHICH 1 OF YOU THREW THIS?” The nameless jerk screamed loudly, held up their football, it was definitely a dinky, little kids, type football compared to their actual ball, but they must’ve accidentally somehow interrupted their teams practice. Rory, trying to be cool, just took the credit for the mistake and was actually trying to be nice to them and apologize but they just laughed at him and were being so snarky and rude.
“WELL YOU NEED TO WATCH WHERE YOU’RE THROWING NERD! YOU INTERCEPTED MY PASS!” And the guy took off his helmet just long enough to spit on the ground right in front of where Rory stood and throw the football back at him really hard, being a vampire it didn’t hurt him like it would’ve if he wasn’t and he did catch it but that was enough to charge Courtney up just a little bit and her eyes started glowing, but not sparkles, more like a blue flame and she snarled her teeth a little at them to which they just laughed.
“OH LOOK AT HER! THINKS SHE’S A DOG! WHAT YOU GONNA DO PRINCESS?!” The large jock continued to spit.
This just made the fire starting in her eyes all the more and her snarl really starting to come out with her canines showing through the grit of her teeth.
The boys started trying to walk away but she was just getting so annoyed and frustrated as they kept laughing at her. Thus causing her to completely lose her patience and as Rory was useless to stop her…
Courtney ran up to and did a perfect tackle on the quarterback of the football team, but with no protective measures and no injuries, of course to herself but luckily nothing more than back pain for him as well. This definitely caused Mr. G. to come by and notice what had happened...Courtney thought about how she was going to be in real trouble and maybe now she’d never get into the school, or at least she’d already ruined a potentially good student teacher relationship that she’d accidentally even started really building...
But thanks to some lucky main character syndrome, that isn’t what had happened at all..
Mr. G. loved her energy, strength, initiative. Overall he was obsessed with her drive as a student so far and he asked Courtney if she wanted to try playing with the team, she did have to be shown how to play with Mr. G. Being extra nice to her and Courtney getting a complete crash course from the team, but once she got it, turned out at least when it comes to athletics, Courtney was a real natural.
Mr. G. Thought it had all gone over so well that day actually; that he even told Courtney that as long as she could actually get enrolled in the school that he would love for her to be on the team and maybe be the new Quarterback with some practice….yeah Mr. Meathead didn’t like that one bit!
***
Since that incident and talking to Benny about it, he promised her he wouldn’t tell Grandma about her being on the sports team as it was pretty possible that if she knew she would want to shut that down and possibly take Courtney out of school altogether being that the idea was too dangerous. Too much of a risk to threaten for something bad to happen with her powers if her anger were to become too strong. But that was the reason that she absolutely loved the sport. The more she played, yes she did still have to try to keep herself in check, and Benny watched over her about it sometimes, but they both knew she had no intention of hurting anyone. Not even really hurting that jock from before aside from a tackle, so they shouldn’t have to really worry. But football was the one thing that she had where what was different about her for once was her strong suit and not what made her any worse or set her apart. Or if it did was always in a good way. And she was even starting to make a new friend in one of the guys from before named David, he’d even gone as far as to drop his jerkwad friends, preferring Courtney’s positive attitude and her aura. Although there was another reason that she just hadn’t known yet..
So that finally leads us back to now when Courtney has just gotten out of football practice, heading to her locker, still in her pants and her elbow and knee pads. On the way to grab her things and then get in the showers. Courtney’s face and outfit, aside from a black tank top that she wore underneath her jersey, are covered in dirt as she walks along the hallway, carrying the top half of her uniform, lifting off her helmet, taking out the mouthguard, and revealing her hair tied up in a ponytail underneath. She wasn't the Quarterback yet but with hope she was well on her way, but that meant that “Mr. Meathead” was still in charge for the time being and so he was sure to be extra hard on her after the previous events, so she was definitely getting exhausted and needing to take some migraine pills after this. Yawning, she turns the corner when her new best friend sees and catches up with her, throwing his arm around her shoulders, oblivious now to her new state, grass stains and smelling of sweat (it not being werewolf related this time).
“Where’d you get the popsicle?” Courtney sleepily askes Rory who in his other hand is holding and then sucking on a bomb-pop. “Wait, I thought Vampires don’t need to eat?” She asks genuinely curious after looking to make sure no one else is in close enough proximity to hear her.
“Well, technically we don’t have to eat.” Rory starts to go on a rambly tangent, to which Courtney is a little extra giggly and groggy as she tries to keep paying attention as they walk together. “But I really liked the flavors of these before and I’m really bored, and they can be a really good distraction from when we’re really craving some bl-”
Courtney starts leading Rory to where they need to turn the corner of the hall to cross to the other side to get to her locker, when they come across the other two guys of their friend group and Rory gets cut off mid-sentence by Ethan and Benny going on and on how they cried to each other, pretty much in nerd speak about their failed meeting with the yearbook committee.
“ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS!”
The intercom was going off about how tomorrow would be “Picture Day” at White Chapel.
Getting to and opening up her locker she pulls out her backpack that holds her school supplies for the day, shower essentials, and a change of clothing. Throwing it over her one shoulder and tossing in her football equipment and then reaching down to take off the pads on both her elbows and knees, throwing them in as well. Waving goodbye to all the guys until lunch, Courtney slams shut her locker and turns her head towards striding over to the showers.
“I am not even going to ask…”

CHAPTER 4: DANCES WITH WOLVES! - My Babysitter’s A Vampire (MBAV)! FANFIC!
Tumblr media
Courtney seemed to be finding herself caught up in a whirlwind of conflicting emotions, torn between the teachings of her upbringing and the reality she was experiencing. Her mother's adamant lessons had always painted vampires as natural adversaries to her kind. Yet, so far, as she navigated this new world. Her convictions wavered. Rory, with his genuine sweetness and efforts to be helpful, had her questioning the rigid lines drawn by her mother's teachings. His kindness conflicted with everything she’d ever known. On the other hand, Erica seemed to confirm her mother's warnings. Erica's immediate disdain based solely on their respective natures aligned with Courtney's preconceived notions. And then there was Sarah, occupying a middle ground, seemingly withholding judgment but making it obvious with the looks that she’d given Courtney that she didn’t necessarily like her either. She’d grown up thinking it was all so black and white, but maybe it’d actually been so much more complex than that? And it almost got her re-thinking a little bit of the elements about her own kind?
“HEY!” A shout in the distance saves Courtney from this definitely pretty awkward situation.
“CRAP!” Rory is back to attention and it’s as if the moment is immediately forgotten as he goes to grab onto Courtney’s arm and pull her away to run with him, but she wasn’t really moving.
“What?” She questions not really understanding. Not really with the time to be able to sit here and explain to her but also not wanting to leave her behind either, Rory accepts their defeat as they are met with Mr. G.
Thankfully though he was never really an overly mean teacher. Not really giving out many punishments unless it was really deserved. He was always busy doing various odd jobs at the school, but the most notable being the gym teacher and sport’s coach.
“What are you kids doing out here? Rory, are you skipping again?”
“No, no Mr. G. I was just trying to help Courtney. She’s new.” Rory tried to come up with a reasonably understandable excuse.
“Well...Rory I guess I can give you an exception this time for trying to help a new student but that doesn’t mean you can just get away with doing whatever you want to understand?” Mr. G. Pointed towards the blonde vampire to which Rory just nodded,
“How about you run along to class, and I can help her out okay?”
“But...” Rory tried to argue but the teacher just gave him a look and so he felt kind of just defenseless and decided on listening and going back into the school building, but he would definitely have to tell Benny when he saw him.
“Now miss, what was your name again?” Mr. G. Asked her very politely.
“It’s Courtney, Courtney Sage.”
Mr. G. Put his hand out to shake hers but she didn’t understand and just copied which he found kind of weird but just ignored as he just switched hands in order to shake her outstretched one.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you Miss Sage, are you new to the area?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh, that’s great. Welcome to White Chapel. Have you been to the front office yet?”
Courtney shook her head and told him that Rory had said something about showing her where it was but that she hadn’t gotten there yet, so Mr. G. Offered to take her there himself. He tried to make a little bit more small talk that Courtney didn't always know how to respond to but for the most part it was nice, she felt kind of warm at how kind all the adults had been to her so far.
Once they’d gotten to the office, he stood with her as she talked to the receptionists and upon telling the woman her name, she tried to find it but nothing came up on the screen.
“Are you sure you were registered in our system dear?”
Courtney was absolutely lost for words not knowing what anything meant, she shook her head unsure to which then the girl asked her if she had a number for a parent that she could talk to or a guardian and with the look of sadness that immediately read upon her face in talking about the idea of parents the receptionist just apologized and handed her a packet.
“I’m sorry dear, unless we can talk to an adult and get this sorted out it looks like you aren’t a student at this school. Just tell your guardian to give us a call, okay? Are you able to get home by yourself?”
“Benny.”
“What about Benny dear? Benny who?” She asked her.
“I’m here with Benny Weir. He’s my cousin. I live with him now.”
Courtney answered just as he’d directed her to do earlier and at this Mr. G. Perked up again and rejoined the conversation.
“Oh, I know Benny, would, you like to come with me until Benny gets out of class?”
Courtney nodded at this and followed Mr. G. out as she didn’t want to be left alone wandering around looking for him or Rory.
“I’m the gym teacher so you can just come sit in on my class, okay?” She nods appreciatively.
“Thank you.”
“Of course, and if we’re lucky, you’ll come to school here and I can see you in my class.” Courtney smiled at his kindness, and they got back to the gym.
Turns out when the bell rang, that gym ended up being Rory, Sarah and Erica’s next class anyways. Courtney waved to him when she sees him walk in and doing their stretches for participation points.
“Okay guys, today you're going to pair into groups of 4, we’re just going to play some light touch football. No tackling or anything like that but just tossing the ball back and forth and trying to get the ball back from each other almost like basketball, okay? I don’t want to have to send anyone to the nurse again.” Mr. G. Announced to the class as they finished stretching, the class broke up into their teams and it turns out that Rory, Erica and Sarah, were one teammate short due to an unexpected call in for the day. And so, Rory got the idea and tried to talk the girls into asking the couch if Courtney could play with them.
Erica wasn’t for it and Sarah indifferent, but they did need another person and Rory had started to annoy Erica so much that she just shrugged it off and started to give in, she would do really almost anything if it would shut him up.
“Okay fine, but if she’s playing, I cannot promise there won’t be any tackling.” Erica seethed. And so, Rory ran up and begged Mr. G. That Courtney could play with them, he on the other hand was pretty easy, giving in to the idea if it was something Courtney wanted to do of course.
She was nervous about being in the group of vamps, but she was getting along with Rory really well so far. Courtney contemplated the idea, she glanced over at the trio. Rory caught her eye and gave her a warm smile, making her feel a bit more at ease. She thought about Benny, the boy she was now living with and supposedly destined to be with. She realized that getting along with Benny's friends was important, and perhaps this was a chance to bridge the gap between them. Taking a deep breath, Courtney nodded. "Okay, I'll give it a try." She just figured she just had to be careful to stay on Erica’s good side.
***
It was around lunch time that Mr. G. let Courtney go with Rory long enough to get something to eat with him. And it’s also when she ran into Benny again.
Rory led her to the table that he normally sits at with the boys, and sometimes the girls join. It didn't seem like they were going to today.
“Hey, muchachos!” An excited Rory exclaims to greet his friends while the wolf girl just follows a little shyly behind, a little embarrassed with earlier events, as she approaches the two brunettes.
"Hey." Ethan greets back quietly staring at the new guests, Benny nodding beside him to her.
"You guys really missed Courtney! She was so awesome!"
Rory didn't read the awkwardness within the group at all, he was just still feeling so amped up with what had just happened back there in the gym. Benny was still kind of feeling weird towards Courtney after what happened between them earlier but at seeing how excited Rory was and it being something apparently so great that his new roommate had done, he definitely couldn't say he wasn't intrigued to see where Rory was going to go with this. Or it was almost possible that Rory was over exaggerating as he does tend to do that. But with the blush that was starting to appear on her cheeks as she looked at her lap sitting across from Benny, he'd guessed that probably wasn’t the case.
Rory started to get into the story about gym class and Courtney just seemed redder with almost every word.
Was she just embarrassed for the attention or did she like Rory? Benny wondered.
Benny was half listening as inside he was kind of letting his own selfish thought get the better of him, kinda not liking the idea of her being into the blonde, but he let that thought slip when out the corner of his eye he sees another certain blonde entering the cafeteria and looking saddened with her friends.
Della...
Benny cut Rory off before they even really heard anything of his story, getting up to go approach Della and remembering that while yes, he did meet Courtney last night but that wasn't the only thing that happened.
Oh yeah, he'd brought Puffles back to life meaning to give him to her to gain her affections…but it just didn't work.
Courtney became disappointed at Benny leaving again and against all logic found her eyes following his form and even though it really didn't make any sense she still found that it hurt her a little bit at seeing him talking to the other pretty girl. And that they both seemed to be laughing, her pushing a piece of hair behind her ear when talking to him. That smile on her face.
If they weren't in public, she'd be growling but instead she just looked back down pretty shyly. It completely deflated Courtney’s mood, no longer really feeling any excitement towards Rory’s story.
And then came the screams….
Suddenly everyone in the cafeteria was breaking out into various fits of screams and jumping out of their seats and starting to run out of the room. Courtney couldn't understand why but it didn't take Ethan and Benny too long to put it together once they got a glimpse of a small little rat running around the cafeteria. One turning into a small group of rats running around the cafeteria and chasing the other students.
Benny came racing back to his friends table when Della ran off terrified and screaming in the middle of their conversation. He grabbed Courtney's arm as Benny and Ethan gave each other an understanding look.
"Come on, we gotta get out of here!"
"What's happening?" Courtney had to raise her voice really high to be heard over all the other frantic students.
"We'll tell you on the way."
Yeah, trying to bring Puffles back to life might've been another really stupid idea…
"ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS! WITH RECENT OUTBURSTS OF RABID ANIMAL ATTACKS, WE ADVISE YOU ALL TO RETURN TO YOUR HOMES AND STAY IN DOORS! ALL CLASSES ARE CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!"
***
"SO. YOU'RE TELLING ME? YOU BROUGHT A DOG BACK TO LIFE JUST TO TRY AND IMPRESS SOME GIRL AND NOW ALL THE DEAD ANIMALS AROUND TOWN ARE TRYING TO KILL EVERYONE?"
"Yes?" Benny answers as if it were even a question.
"AND YOU WERE SO UPSET THAT I EMBARRASSED YOU TODAY?" Courtney was obviously very frustrated, for reasons she couldn't even entirely completely piece together herself…yet. She punched him a little in the arm for his actions and huffed down on Benny's couch.
"I'M SORRY," Benny whines and she just glare at him.
"But if the potion did cause this then it'll probably run out of juice or something, the worst is probably over!" The boys slumped down equal to how Courtney had before and then the TV turned on.
Yeah, the worst is definitely not over! Turning on the tv there was a new segment about all this on the news where the anchor almost got his eyes eaten by a pet turtle that Ethan feels pretty certain to be his old pet from when he was 8.
"This is bad, " Ethan responds.
"No kidding!" The 3 got scared from their attention towards the television set and each other by grandma standing in the next room.
"Do you twits have something to tell me?" Benny's grandma stands back from her trip holding a half empty yellow potion vial.
Okay. Yeah, Grandma is incredible! Benny explained his story and she just gave Courtney a knowing look during the part when he admitted the reasoning behind impressing this girl.
The boys both saw it but didn't know what it meant, mistaking it as them agreeing to him being a complete idiot, innocent enough!
Grandma Weir immediately started putting together a batch of anti-potion to spray on all the creatures brought back.
"But why are they so evil?" Ethan asked.
"You reanimated the bodies, but the souls have moved on, and a body with no soul is a demon's playground."
And so, they made a plan.
Grandma gave the boys a flute, supposed to play this magical tune to draw all the animals back to it, but she warned how fast the demons would arrive, attracted to the sound so they better be prepared for it.
Benny was all willing and ready to do it but Grandma turned him down in favor of Ethan. Said she'd needed Courtney and Benny to both stay and help her make the brew. Courtney just smiled and chuckled at this because with a wink and nudge from Grandma she knew this was just a ploy to try to get them closer together. Again, the boys were lost.
But Ethan also said he couldn't due to some important family, dinner, thing that his dad was throwing and so they came up with the idea for Rory to do it.
And Courtney could kinda understand now why they didn't seem to love including him in important things like this so much.
When Rory arrived Benny and Courtney had just a little earlier shown up, Sarah was there playing waitress for the dinner and Ethan was there for the obvious reasons.
Turns out that Rory is kind and funny but definitely not the smartest, at least not all the way through, he'd had this great idea about playing the tune on a loop through a speaker in order to draw more to them, great in theory but of course he has to screw it up somewhere so instead of drawing them to Benny's backyard like planned, so Courtney and Benny could easily take them out, he accidentally dropped it down the Morgan's chimney drawing all of their attention to the dinner…
So now the music's in the house meaning the demons would be pretty soon too…
Or more like right now when you could hear a small yelp from the living room, and it turns out Della's family is who Ethan's are having the dinner with. Something crawled on her leg and Courtney almost wanted to find it funny. When Sarah had to catch the creature on a dish tray Benny shut her up with the look, he gave Rory…if looks were enough to kill, he'd definitely be dead again…
Ethan went to get the player out of the chimney but to no avail and now it was time! All the animals were everywhere crawling around in the kitchen.
Sarah came back in and threw little rodents and such around. Benny, Courtney and now a returned Ethan spraying them until they disintegrated. But it was almost as if it was worthless. Once one disappeared another would arrive, they didn't know what to do. The group was starting to get surrounded to the point of not being able to keep up and it would absolutely run the dinner, if that was even all it would.
As the first wave of creatures stormed the kitchen, panic set in. Courtney attempted to fight valiantly alongside the others. But she was beginning to pretty easily become overwhelmed by the sheer number of creatures and how it seemed they all had been ganging up on her.
Their bony, clawed paws scratched at her, and their jaws snapped dangerously close.
Realizing they were quickly losing ground, Courtney dashed outside in a desperate bid to draw the horde away. With a defiant growl, she attempted to harness her latent powers, striving to call upon her wolf form but it seemed having yet to learn to master her new abilities, they betrayed her as she didn’t know how to grasp hold of them just yet. She even tried for at the very least her razor-sharp claws that she knows she should also have, but still nothing.
Courtney was quickly attacked as what looked to be a little gray squirrel, jumped up and started attacking Courtney’s legs, scratching and biting at her and as much as she would swat at it it was relentless to holding on, and in turn allowing a few more other rabid animals trying to do the same thing. Knocking her over and approaching her face and trying to tear out her eyes. She screamed and screamed, writhed and flung trying to get them off but they just wouldn’t let up.
But thankfully what she hadn’t noticed was that almost as quickly as she’d gotten out there Rory had made way to following after her, worrying for her safety. Watching her body be knocked down her immediately sprang into action to rush to her side and spray the creatures off her.
The creatures hissed and recoiled, their forms sizzling and dissipating into smoke as the liquid hit them. Courtney managed to scramble to her feet, panting heavily, her heart racing.
"Rory!" Courtney cried out in relief as he helped her to her feet.
"Are you okay?" he asked, concern etched across his features.
Courtney's heart raced, a mix of surprise and gratitude filling her. "Yeah, Thanks!"
Rory's water gun danced in his hands as he sprayed the creatures with precision. Courtney followed suit, the initial fear giving way to a newfound determination. The creatures howled and screeched, their ranks thinning as the water took its toll. But Courtney was forced to retreat, dodging a lunging creature.
As she stumbled backward, her water gun dropped from her hand and fell to the grass a short distance away. She growled under her breath as it clashed to the ground leaving her defenseless. Rory effortlessly dispatched the creature and saw her predicament. Without missing a beat, Rory reached to where it had been slung over his shoulder, tossing his flute to her.
"Catch!" he yelled, his voice a mix of urgency and exhilaration. Courtney caught the flute in surprise, her fingers wrapping around the cool metal. The creatures were closing in, but Rory was already on the move. In a fluid motion using his super speed, he picked up her water gun and now held two weapons in his hands. Dispatching another creature.
Courtney took a deep breath, her fingers trembling as she raised the flute to her lips. She blew a series of notes, a haunting melody that echoed through the night. The reanimated animals turned their attention towards her, drawn by the sound.
Rory took advantage of the distraction and sprayed the potion with precision, one after the other. They convulsed and disintegrated into dust, leaving behind only a sense of relief.
Courtney lowered the flute, her heart still racing. "Did… did we do it?"
As it seemed that the coast was clear the night's horrors seemed to fade away. Courtney and Rory stood together, Courtney catching her breath.  Rory, with his vampire abilities, recovered quickly, his breath steady and his eyes still filled with the fire of the fight. He turned to Courtney, a grin tugging at the corner of his lips.
"We make a pretty great team, don't we? We just kicked some serious furry butt."
Courtney hesitated for a moment, still skeptical of vampires, despite the days recent events.
But Rory had been different. He'd been kind to her, and after starting her life over in a new town, the idea of having a friend was strangely appealing.
She finally managed a small, appreciative smile and nodded. "Yeah, I guess we do. Thanks for helping me out, Rory."
Rory's grin widened, and he took a step closer to her, his crimson eyes gleaming in the moonlight. "Anytime, Courtney. Friends stick together, right?"
Courtney's heart skipped a beat at the word 'friends.' She hadn't ever had one before, there was never anyone around her own age and she was the only girl. She looked at Rory, weighing her options. Despite her reservations, she couldn't deny that he had been there for her when she needed it most. Maybe it was time to let go of her preconceived notions, at least a little.
Rory took a small step forward, his arms outstretched as if expecting a hug. "So, how about that hug?" he asked with a warm, inviting smile.
Courtney hesitated once more. The thought of embracing a vampire was still unsettling, she took a step back, wrapping her arms around herself as if to shield herself from the vulnerability of physical contact. "I'm not sure I'm ready for that," she admitted, her voice soft.
Rory's shoulders slumped slightly, but he quickly recovered, his trademark grin returning. "No worries. I get it. We’ll go in baby steps. How about a fist bump instead?"
Courtney raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite herself. "What do you mean?"  She tilted her head, her ears perked up in curiosity.
Rory playfully held out his fist. "Fist bump? It's a way for humans to greet each other or show friendship. You just bump your fist against mine, like this." He demonstrated, extending his fist toward her.
Courtney stared at his fist, then back at his face, a puzzled expression on her features.
Rory chuckled warmly. "It's just a fun way for humans to connect. It's like a secret handshake, but simpler. Here, let me teach you."
Rory extended his fist again, patiently waiting for Courtney to mimic his actions. Courtney hesitated for a moment, tilted her head, studying Rory's hand. She extended her hand tentatively and tried to imitate his fist. But her werewolf strength caused her to accidentally hit his hand with a bit more force than intended. Rory laughed. "You're strong, Courtney! But we need to make it a bit gentler."
Courtney blinked, her ears drooping in embarrassment. "Oh, sorry. Like this?" She attempted the fist bump again, this time with less force, but it still came across a tad too strong.
Rory smiled reassuringly. "You're getting there! Just a little less power. Imagine you're tapping a friend's hand, not trying to knock it away."
Taking a deep breath, Courtney focused on her own strength, toning it down a notch. She offered her fist again, this time with a softer touch. Her knuckles met Rory's in a perfect, gentle bump.
"Perfect!" Rory exclaimed, genuinely impressed. "You've got it, Courtney!"
A shy grin spread across Courtney's face as she exchanged another successful fist bump with Rory. "I'm learning, aren't I?"
Rory nodded enthusiastically. "Absolutely!”
As the night wore on, Rory helped Courtney continue to practice her fist bumps under the silver glow of the moon. Courtney's excitement and curiosity about the human world grew with each passing moment. She was still very scared and sad about being separated from her family, but she also couldn’t lie that she was becoming very hopeful for learning more about the customs of people that she’d been deprived of up until this point.

CHAPTER 3: DANCES WITH WOLVES! My Babysitter's A Vampire (MBAV)! FANFIC!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grandma Weir had gone ahead and promised how she wouldn’t say anything to her grandson, trusting that someday Courtney would herself, when the time was right. And like she said she would, she’d left a note on the fridge for him, about Benny taking Courtney shopping after school that day for some new clothes, while she was gone.
But things did end up going a little differently than originally planned. Thanks to Benny.
Waking up in the morning Courtney didn't get too much sleep, she woke up still feeling exhausted and pretty terrible from the night before, body sore all over and starving. But the only thing was that she'd woken up so much earlier than Benny and while she could hear her stomach really violently growling she didn't know how to make anything for herself, her parents having hunted and gathered all food for her in the past. But she was just thinking how she was hungry and wanted to do something nice for Benny, now that she had learned of him being her imprint thus bonding their souls together. So she decided she wanted to try to make something anyways. It couldn't be that hard, could it?
Let's just go ahead and say the answer would be a resounding yes, when Benny has to come running out to the kitchen in his boxers to turn off the smoke alarm and fix the mess she'd made before she burnt the house down.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" Benny screams, voice echoing annoyance, maybe just a little too loudly, Courtney feeling frustration and guilty from his tone as she hits the counter with a dish towel to smother a remaining stubborn flame.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I just was hungry and wanted to do something nice for you…"
"WHAT, DID YOU LIVE UNDER A ROCK?!?"
"YEAH! KIND OF!" Courtney ends up screaming back in aggravation of her failure.
This response caught Benny off guard, momentarily silencing his anger. He attempted to calm down, his irritation giving way to a more measured tone.
"Sorry, just let me make us breakfast, okay? I'll teach you how later." Courtney nodded, her emotions settling as she mouthed a quiet "thank you" before taking a seat at the kitchen counter.
As Benny busied himself with cooking, an awkward silence hung in the air. Courtney decided to break the tension.
"I told your Grandma I lived in a cave." It still came out as a little bit of a gruff but with a calmer tone.
Benny chuckled at her admission, leaving Courtney feeling perplexed.
"What? Is that funny to you?"
"I mean, yeah." Benny replies walking back in with an apron on that works to calm her nerves slightly as much as she tries to deny, it does get a giggle out of Courtney. Benny holding a plate of eggs that he puts down in front of her before throwing the apron off behind him and then sitting down beside her with his own plate.
"You have got to admit that it's kind of funny, the idea of you living in a cave with your mother and like 20 other old dudes."
Okay that actually did make Courtney feel better as she lets out a small chuckle, she'd never thought of it like that before.
They went on to eat their breakfast, but Benny made a few more small jokes about what it must've been like to live with just a bunch of random men or what it just must have meant to be a werewolf kid.
"Anyway, what are you doing today?" Courtney mostly kind of ignored and interrupted him, cutting off his jokes as she didn't want to have to try to think any more about them at the moment.
Benny's smile faded as he took notice of the shift in both the conversation and her demeanor and he cleared his throat, she was clearly upset but he wasn’t going to egg it on or anything. So, he accepted the change and just answered her question.
"Well, in a little bit I got to go to school, and then that's until 3:15, and then I'll be back after to take you to the mall."
"School?"
"Yeah, what? Don't tell me you've never had to go to school before either?"
"I've never been out of the cave before…"
Courtney again shakes her head and looks at Benny confused and saddened, which makes Benny feel bad for her. He just stares back at her really just shocked at all this new information, he couldn't imagine how secluded her life before sounds and how she could be so happy having lived it, though he also realizes it's probably all she's ever known.
"What?" Benny almost choked on his eggs.
"Yeah, I get it, my life is very surprising to you."
Courtney sighs realizing that with the both of them going to be gone for the whole day she is definitely going to be forced to be completely bored while she's alone with nothing to do while she sits waiting for them to get back. Getting up from her stool she goes back to sit on the bed and seemingly cannot get comfortable for anything. Getting super annoyed at this Courtney starts circling around on the bed like a dog chasing its tail until she ends up sitting and curling up on the bed finally finding a comfortable seat but to Benny, she was looking completely lost and depressed.
Next thing Courtney knows she has something thrown lightly at her position on the bed. Sitting up and brushing her hair out of her face to see what he threw. It’s a comic book, though she wouldn’t have any frame of reference to know that.
"What is this?"
"Figured I'd just give you something to do while I'm gone so this is a comic book series. I figured you’d like it because the main character is a werewolf too." Benny points at the man on the front cover. Courtney picks it up and starts flipping through the pages and she likes the art style, looks like werewolves that face space monsters.
"Okay, I'm running late so I'll be seeing you later." Courtney looks up to see Benny has now gotten fully dressed, with a backpack over his shoulder as he comes out of his room. Benny's talking to Ethan on his phone before stepping out.
Courtney appreciates the comic but tosses it on the nearby table as she gets comfortable in bed again and when Benny watches this, he sees she still looks kinda upset and he doesn't get it until he has a sudden realization.
"I'll catch up with you E." Before Ethan can respond he hangs up the flip phone and comes back to look at the girl.
"You can't read, can you?" Benny asks her to which she just shakes her head, Benny squeezes the bridge of his nose and sighs thinking about how stupid what he's about to do definitely is. He realizes that it could be great for her, or the possibly worst thing ever but looking at her right now he just feels too guilty…
"Come on," he urged, his tone tinged with a mix of anxiety and impatience.
Courtney's head perked up, her curiosity evident in the tilt of her head as she sat up. "What?"
Benny motioned for her to hurry, a subtle urgency in his gestures. "We're already late for school."
His words seemed to trigger a hesitant yet hopeful smile on Courtney's face. Her purple eyes sparkled with a glimmer of uncertainty, as if she wanted to believe him but had a flicker of doubt. Nonetheless, her enthusiasm couldn't be contained, and her expression lit up like the sky at dawn. A touch of apprehension lingered beneath her joy, a whisper of caution that she ignored, falling into her almost habitual puppy dog mode.
In response, she sat there, a grin stretching across her lips, her excitement causing her to wiggle her rear end with a hint of bashfulness. Benny couldn't help but chuckle, his amusement both genuine and laced with a sense of disbelief.
“Come on girl, come on!” Literally has to pat his knees and bend down to her level as if she was an actual dog and shakes his head in disbelief when she actually comes running to him on all fours…
Yeah Grandma might have to kill him for this later.
***
“What is she doing here?” Ethan asks Benny very frantically, obviously freaking out as Courtney and Benny have now caught up with him and they very quickly start to approach the school. And Courtney was now actually walking on her two feet and not her hands.
“I’m sorry, no offense.” Ethan motions towards her.
“But Benny, this is a really stupid idea, she could be really dangerous.”
“Yeah, because just because you say, ‘no offense’ makes everything okay.” Benny jabs back to his friend in her defense, Ethan looking kinda pathetic and apologetic.
“I’m sorry.” Ethan looks to apologize to her for what he’d said but Courtney didn’t even realize she’d just been somewhat insulted.
Ever since leaving the house Courtney just still had that big same, goofy, smile plastered on her face. This is her first time really being outside and she just couldn’t believe what she’d been missing out on for all those years she’d been away in the cave.
The sun was shining ‘oh, so brightly’ on this specific morning, and Courtney just spun around in it with so much glee as they walked prompting Benny to get a good laugh at her every time he saw whatever she was doing. She might’ve also fallen over a little bit one time after stumbling in her own little dance, and yes passersby definitely were staring back at them a little bit with judging looks.
“Ethan, look at her she’s fine, she just wants to be a real person like us, she doesn’t know how to do anything, I just thought this could be good for her. I mean she almost burnt my house down this morning.”
Ethan just gave him this look and Benny knew exactly what it’d meant.
“Are you sure you aren’t just attracted to her?”
“That I am not,” Benny looked back at her and almost lost it when they noticed she was laying in the grass and almost rolling around in one of their neighbors flower gardens. Well there goes clean clothes…
Benny reached down to stop and grab her and lead her to walk back on her feet again behind them. At first she kinda seemed a little disappointed like she might fight after them until she noticed a butterfly on the path to follow.
“See, you’re going to have to watch after her, she doesn’t seem to really understand how real people actually act.”
“E, she’s gonna be totally…” Benny gets cut off with his sentence and Ethan gives him a look at seeing there’s now just a random frisbee that Courtney seems to have caught in her mouth as she smiles at them and the butterfly sets on her nose.
“Point taken.”
So, starting to approach the school Benny definitely seemingly had a bit of work cut out for him. The spell master wasn't really fazed by her playful behavior; he honestly kind of just found it amusing and paid no heed to the curious glances they received walking in the halls and to their lockers, their presence definitely garnered them attention. But Benny did find he had to work overtime at getting her just to walk properly, to the point that to keep her attention he had to gently snap in her face a few times.
And then of course this had to be the moment in which Rory decided to stop over and talk to the boys anyway at their lockers, but then he saw Courtney talking along with Benny and decided to come over and his instinct of course is to want to come over and flirt with his “future bride.”
“Hello Sweetness!” Again, Rory trying to act much cooler than he actually is with the way he was leaning against the wall, one of the other lockers beside her. And then the girl who actually owned the locker came up behind him needing to get into it and was also staring at her and her appearance which was definitely fair. She looked crazy with how dirty her body and clothes were and her hair had become such a rat’s nest. Rory honestly was just so infatuated that he didn’t even notice. Even though she definitely should’ve smelled even worse than last night.
“Whatcha, doing here babe, come to see me?”
Not understanding sarcasm or at all what Rory was even doing, Courtney just turned her attention towards him in her puppy like state she smiled at him and answered fully truthfully. Getting a weird look from that other girl again, which Rory noticed but couldn’t understand. He was so deep he just couldn’t see it.
“Benny brought me here so I could learn how to read!” Her innocence and positivity struck Rory as endearing. Rory just thought this was the most adorable thing he’d ever seen before, just how innocent she was being about it and how positive she was acting, like that goofy smile that’d been there since leaving Benny’s house.
“That’s great! If you ever need someone to study with, I’m free anytime.”
Courtney just smiled at Rory’s kind gesture and liking how he talked to her she just started going up to him and started smelling him all over, which again Rory liked, but he was also starting to snap out of his own trance and see this is sort of actually a little bit weird..
“Benny!” Ethan saw what she was doing and elbowed his best friend in the side when he glanced over at the action and started trying to laugh it off. “Do something!”
“Okay, Okay, geez.” Benny replied at seeing how red Ethan’s face had been getting, though he didn’t know if it was from embarrassment or frustration, maybe both? “Courtney!” He yelled like an angry parent reprimanding their pet.
“Really guys, you had to bring your dog to school?” Erica motions as herself and Sarah now join the group and Erica questions giving her a disgusted look with her actions to Rory. Sarah must have told her.
“Courtney!” Benny started now actually getting a little frustrated himself in her not listening. He snapped again at her really close and loudly he whistled in her face.
But it seemed to have definitely helped because his last snap in front of her view seemed to bring Courtney out of whatever trance she’d been in before. Shaking her head and rubbing the back of it like a bad headache Courtney pushed his fingers out from her face.
“Hey! Stop that.” She stepped away from Rory and gave him a snarl and very quizzical look.
“Finally!” Benny and Ethan each breathing a sigh of relief.
“What? Wait, where are we?” Courtney asked definitely groggily and looking down to take in her appearance being completely filthy again. “What! Why am I covered in all this dirt?” She asked to which Benny went ahead to explain all her actions to her again.
“Oh god,” she pushed her hands in front of her face to wipe her eyes in annoyance at herself. “I’m sorry Benny. about your clothes. Maybe me being here isn’t the best idea.”
“No, you’re fine, don’t worry about it,” Benny just shrugged it off. At seeing the honesty behind his eyes when saying this Courtney started to feel better, though she looked awful she hoped for him to help her find a way to get cleaned back up, and that her more canine fate wouldn’t overtake her control again anytime soon. She felt better at how Benny had seemed so accepting her so easily. But it wasn’t long before her face fell once more.
Benny got cut off in the middle of his sentence and Courtney followed the direction in which his eyes had turned away from her. Her heart began to sink at seeing just how his features had all seemed to completely light up at the view of the pretty blonde girl down the hallway.
“Benny?” Courtney questioned but he might as well have not heard her.
Courtney watched as Benny made his way towards Della, a swirling feeling building within her as he just left her side without a second thought. Standing there, a mix of confusion and insecurity arising in her chest.
Observing them down the way she hated how it hurt her just seeing them exchanging smiles and laughter. She didn’t even know Benny all that much yet, but her still her mind had forced her to feel as if she’d already claimed him. They appeared so comfortable with each other; their connection evident even from a distance. Courtney's fingers nervously played with the hem of her leather jacket as a pang of loneliness washed over her.
In the background, a sudden shift in the atmosphere caught Courtney's attention back. She turned to see Ethan wearing an expression she couldn't quite place.
“Rory, can you just take her to the office please?”
Courtney could feel the shame in his voice and felt so embarrassed and mad at herself that it almost made her want to cry. Everyone else in the group started to walk away and while Rory still was infatuated by her, he now did find this kind of disgusting as he went to lead her away, but everyone was staring at them making him also start to feel embarrassed.
“Rory. maybe take her to the showers first.” Sarah stopped in her tracks, turning around she ran back to them and glared at any passers by their surroundings, giving dirty looks.
Behind her it only made her feel worse when she could hear the faint sound of Ethan’s voice trying to explain away her behavior as her being an actor, practicing for a performance where she played a dog in the school play.
“Here, you can have these.” Sarah tried to smile at her, it was obvious she still wasn’t so sure about her, but she at least was trying to be nicer than Erica. Sarah handed her another outfit, but it seemed to be a set of girls' gym clothes this time. A black and red west chapel t-shirt with a pair of gray gym shorts.
“Also, a couple sprays of this on yourself and use this for your hair.” She’d included a brush and perfume bottle with the set.
“Okay?” Though she was still not the biggest fan of their species either she was very appreciative of their kindness.
“I got her.” Rory responded. Courtney was definitely still really confused but she’d accepted the pieces and that made her feel a little bit better while Rory, trying to ignore her smell and look, first placed his arm over her shoulder and started to lead her to the gym showers. She tried not to be too rude but still shrugged off his touch, it was going to take a lot of getting used to with the idea of being friendly with the creatures she’d thought her entire childhood she was supposed to despise. Rory was slightly saddened by the action but tried to continue to play it cool, plastering a huge smile back onto his face regardless as he led her the rest of the way. They got to the locker room and after getting a bit more familiar with the operations of the shower, Courtney threw her stuff aside annoyingly and stepped in.
“Are you okay?”
Of course, Rory would try to walk in with her but some other girl showering before a sports practice shoved him out.
“I’ll be waiting out here.” He called.
So, Courtney had to go ahead and get cleaned up all over again before getting redressed and walked out just damp hair and all, holding the spray bottle and brush unsure of really how to use either of them. She kept on Benny’s underwear but hopefully he wouldn’t mind that she’d just left the rest behind.
Upon walking back out, Rory just noticed the lost look on her face and the adorable dog-like scrunch of her nose, like they do with their longer snouts. It made him chuckle a bit before realizing just how actually lost she really was standing there unsure of what to do.
But eventually he did catch on.
“Oh! Here! Do you need help?” Courtney nodded to which Rory just led the girl with him to the outside lunch tables of the building, grabbing her arm lightly and feeling just how warm she’d felt against his own cold skin. Thinking though it might’ve just been the shower water being up pretty high.
Rory sat her down and sat beside her and started to help her with the hairbrush as he started trying to “service his queen” and started lightly brushing out her long and gorgeous blue locks. Accidently pulling a little too hard a couple times and apologized as she would make a couple quiet yelps.
And then once she was done, he’d put the brush down and grabbed the spray bottle, spraying her a couple times, maybe some too many but with how she was before, anything could definitely be an improvement. But he did have to apologize once again when he’d accidentally gotten a little bit in her mouth and made her start sneezing a little bit.
Courtney smiled and tried to laugh it off once she was able to get the taste out of her mouth, she thanked Rory and went to get up to try to go and find wherever Benny was, not realizing what classes were and that he’d be currently in one.
She grabbed the items and ruffled his hair as he smiled up at her kindly in adoration again.
And because neither of them could really read social cues; Rory definitely read into things a bit too far and closed his eyes leaning in for that first kiss he’d wanted from her. Courtney didn’t know what she should do but definitely knew that this is not at all what she’d been wanting...not that she was really one for love anyway but also with her having just imprinted, probably, on one of his friends she knew this was not the best of ideas. But she didn’t know exactly how to turn him down without hurting his feelings.
Thankfully for them both she wouldn’t have to…

Chapter 2: DANCES WITH WOLVES! My Babysitter’s A Vampire (MBAV)! Fanfic!
Tumblr media
Courtney told Grandma Weir all about how today was her birthday and she just turned 16 years old, much like she had expected from what the book had said. Courtney told her about what she was told from her mother about how tonight was to be her first transformation and about how the last memory she had was that of being put in the cage right before the full moon was supposed to hit.
It wasn’t a lot of information that she could give them, but it definitely gave enough of an idea of what could’ve happened to her. The only part grandma didn’t understand was that of her hair color change. Courtney was telling her that before she woke up her hair had been dark like the color of Ethan or Benny’s but now looking at her it’s a bright blue color. Almost looks like it grew straight out of her head that way. But just based on the story it sounds like Courtney transitioned and being that for the first time she wasn’t so easily able to control herself as the wolf form probably completely took over and did some stuff until she eventually showed up here…They just needed to be able to figure out where she’d been and what she’d done to have arrived here, where was she from. But when asked, it seems Courtney didn’t even know that information either. Since all she knew of her life was living in that cave with her pack.
“Okay, well if that is all the information we can gather for right now, you stay here for the night, tomorrow I will have to leave a bit early to take a little bit of a trip to try to get some new herbs.” Grandma spoke, getting off the bed and starting to pack up some supplies in her case.
“Ethan,” she asked, turning her attention to the group of teens.
“You said you saw her over a body?” Ethan nods.
“Okay, there’s a potion I can make to help her get her memories back, and then we can figure out what happened.”
“Ms. Weir, not to question your judgment or anything, but are you sure you can just trust letting her stay here? Sounds like she could’ve killed someone...”
Upon hearing this coming from Sarah, Courtney looked down worryingly and also feeling pretty guilty, playing with the dead skin on her fingers and nail bed and wondering, praying to God that it wasn’t true. That wasn’t her...she wouldn’t hurt anyone she swears...but can she really if something happened that she couldn’t control? The tears threatened to fall again and then when she looked up they were all just looking at her again.
“I appreciate your concern Sarah, but I have a good feeling about her, I will take my chances, but if it makes you all feel better...” And then Grandma approaches Courtney. Reaching to grab another small vial next to the bedside, she sprinkles a little of the blue colored potion dust over the young girl's head. “There, now she is unable to change again until the next full moon. Happy?” She asked the group, to which they all nodded, and Rory was still with everything just looking at her with the biggest lovey dovey eyes ever like he just felt something radiating off her energy, he didn’t care if their kinds normally hated each other.
“Now Benny, get the poor girl something else comfortable to wear.” Ms. Weir ordered her grandson.
And yeah, Courtney didn’t realize just how dirty her clothes were until she was looking in the mirror and down at her arms, apparently her whole body.
“Come with me dear, I will show you where you can get cleaned up.”
“I mean can’t I just lick myself clean?” Yeah, really shows she was raised by a group of dogs.
“Oh no, your majesty, you are going to surely need a shower, I’ll show you.” Rory excitedly volunteered only for Ethan to grab him by the back of his shirt and pull him back to sitting on his butt,
“Stay.” Ethan pointed down at the disappointed and pouting blonde.
***
Ethan, Rory, and Sarah had each gone home now whilst Benny’s grandmother led her to the bathroom and introduced her to the shower and all the hygienic supplies, they had for her to use to get herself cleaned up. Grandma showed Courtney what each item was and how she was to use it. Courtney observed with cautious interest. She demonstrated how to turn on and adjust the shower temperature, allowing Courtney to test the water before she stepped out so that the young girl could get undressed.
She then stepped under the water and almost howled at just how nice it felt on her skin and she watched as the dirt, mud, and what she hoped wasn’t actually blood. It all just fell away in the water to the drain. She let out a growl of uncertainty, but she did have to admit that this was heaven compared to how the pack communally bathed each other. The unfamiliarity still made her feel tense.
She was also definitely still scared and found herself crying when she was left alone, crying over how she didn’t know what she’d done and that was a terrifying thought in itself but just also being so lost and missing her family. But she knew she had to be strong as well in case anything turned negatively in her favor.
She tried and wanted to be appreciative of the hospitality she was being treated with but also, they didn’t know what they’d find when the potion would be used on her. Trying to shake it off she got cleaned up and struggled a little but eventually got the shower off. Stepping out she saw exposed patches of her reflection looking back at her from the wall, Curiosity getting the better and just wanting to see more Courtney starts wiping off the mirror as she found that to be one positivity to all this. Nobody knew what it meant yet and that could be scary but just looks wise she didn’t hate the blue, it just took her off guard at first, but just looking at it wise, it looked good on her and especially with her new purple eyes.
Courtney plotted the water with the towel from off her body, she fisted the material to wrap it snugly around her frame while her other hand played with and inspected her new color. She’d only ever really seen her reflection before in puddles during rainy days or after storms where rainwater would get on the cave floor. And for clothes there were only a few options she’d ever had, scavenged for her by packmates while they got to go out.
Speaking about this is when Benny lightly knocked on the bathroom door. After hearing the small tapping sound Courtney slightly struggled to open the door. Trying her best to keep most of her body hidden from his sight in the case her towel could slip and trying not to really look at his face either after all their interactions so far have not been the most positive. And really, he wasn’t trying to really look at her either, as much of a flirt that Benny could be he didn’t want to see her body without her real consent, so he mostly just kept turning away as he held out his arm with a couple clean clothing items sitting on it for her to take.
So, it was a bit of an awkward but thankfully quick exchange as she opened the door, quickly snatched the items from him, and then closed it back up so that she could drop the towel and get dressed.
There were 3 items that Benny had chosen. Of course, one of his striped polos, really the only type of shirt he ever even seemed to own, and then a pair of baggy boy shorts style underwear that seemed just a little bit concerning to have her share, and then finally a baggy pair of boy’s gym shorts.
Benny stood still on the other side of the door in case she were to possibly need anything else and so he heard a little snort come from the other side.
“Oh yeah, I swear the underwear are new. I didn’t know what else would be any more comfortable.” He couldn’t see but on the other side Courtney took a sigh at this, His reassurance made her snort softly, though her guarded demeanor remained intact. she shrugged knowing there isn’t really anything else for her to possibly lose and with a hesitant chuckle to herself she pulled the polo over her head.
“Are you okay?” He stood and asked not having heard anything else come from her yet.
“Yeah, I’m coming out.” She’d softly replied.
Courtney went to open the door with Benny patiently waiting on the other side. Benny didn’t exactly know what to think of her thus far; on one hand Benny has this big thing for Della, going as far as to bring her dog back from the dead, and yes. he realized he might still have to deal with some consequences there later but ignored that for the moment. Yeah, he still had this thing for Della still and yes, he also kinda did have some questions and concerns with this girl, kind of in the same vein as his friends. But he also had to admit that just like Rory he also found her attractive, but in a different way. For Benny he saw her looks, yes. But also just he felt something with the energy she gave off and how she interacted with his grandma, thought it might be a mistake on his part, but he just couldn’t imagine that she could actually be really dangerous.
At least not intentionally and it almost gave him a pull to want to help her even though the two yet haven’t even really looked each other fully in the eyes yet. Speaking of which..
The door opened slowly as she stumbled a little bit, Courtney first looking down really focusing on the knob. And Benny couldn’t help but gulp at taking in the sight below him and admitting to himself about just how it felt for him seeing a girl in an outfit completely made of his clothes. Benny tried to remind himself to snap out of it and actually say words and not just awkwardly stare at her though he was kinda failing at a loss for something to say. Was he making her uncomfortable?
Stepping out, she found herself in close proximity to Benny, her instincts causing her to slightly bare her teeth in a snarl, a reflexive sign of warning. Benny's gaze and words both showed concern, but her mind was still grappling with the overwhelming changes she was facing.
Pinching himself he stumbled but managed to get the words out. “You look great, do you feel okay?”
But it turns out Courtney was pretty equally at a loss as she didn’t answer right away and just seemed in her own little trance. Though Benny didn’t take it as having anything to do with himself and figuring it was probably her having been so overwhelmed with everything going on.
But on Courtney’s end things were definitely a little bit different than that.
For the entire duration of time that Courtney was even in the bathroom all that plagued her mind was just a feeling of dread for her whole situation. She felt thankful for the people around her being seemingly nice and helpful but that she knows she cannot stay. This is not where she belongs. She is a werewolf and a werewolf belongs with their pack and she’s got a destiny to uphold, it’s something that’s been buried into her mind for her entire life practically. Does she want it, maybe not but that’s not how it works. She has to go back. Besides, even if these people have been nice to her, well so far technically it was really only the grandma so far as the rest of the group seemed to have hated her from the start just because they are a group of Vampires. And to be fair with good reason as she knows she is meant to hate them too. So, all she could think about is how mixed up and complicated her feelings are...she’s out of the cave, that feeling alone is very overwhelming.
But trying to ignore that and take everything one small step at a time, she moves to go to the door slowly and carefully comes to step out and close it behind her slowly and hopefully, quietly. Once she hears it click to signify that it shut successfully, she turns back around slowly to see that she and the grandson of the group, she thinks she’d heard her calling him “Benny”? are pretty close, almost too close, face to face.
First, she’s just feeling the nerves considering he’s a stranger to her, but then she looks up slightly and they are looking face to face for the very first time.
“Do you feel okay?”  Benny asked, his cautious approach evident.
Courtney hears it and she’s looking up at him, Benny sees she’s looking him straight in the eyes but it’s almost as if she’s not there. To him she looks kinda stunned and out of it and so he starts to worry a little bit. What does he do? It doesn’t help either of their feelings that the two of them are physically so close to each other without having meant to be, but then before too long she seems to be fine. Courtney shakes her head a little, completely snapping out of whatever held her attention for the moment there and is back to looking and seeing Benny, albeit looking just a little concerned.
“Oh yeah, Yeah, I’m fine.” She holds her hand to her temple and just shakes her head around a little bit. She starts moving to put a little distance between themselves as she goes back to the makeshift bed in the living room area. Sitting down on it and fiddling with the blanket and pillow.
“Are they comfortable enough?” Benny asks although she isn’t really looking at him. Did he do something wrong.
“What?”
“The clothes.” She looks up at him but not in the eyes.
“Oh yeah, yeah they work alright.”
“Okay.”
Benny kind of feels the awkwardness of the air of the situation and turns around to go back to his bedroom for the night and leave her out here. But then he remembers and stops.
“Oh, do you need anything else? Have you eaten in a while?”
“Oh, I don’t really remember that either I guess, uhm… I guess I can get myself some water if I need it later, right?”
“Do you know how?” Benny asks nervous but honestly.
“If it’s like the shower I think I can get it.” She responds.
“Here.” Benny goes over to the sink and grabs a glass from the cabinet above, filling it with some ice water, giving it to her and then without saying anything he seems to remember something that should be in the fridge, he goes to check and sees a piece of steak still remains, he pulls it out. Heats it up after switching the plate and then grabbing some silverware he brings it out and hands the plate to Courtney and extends the fork out with his hand.
Courtney kinda takes him off guard though when she just immediately without even seeming to have thought. She grabs the piece of meat off the dish and just scarfs the food down. Making some pretty gnarly dog type eating sounds. Benny doesn’t know whether to be shocked or completely disgusted when he takes the plate back and throws all the dishware back into the sink.
“Okay, you should be good, you know where the bathroom is so, I guess I’m going to go to bed so goodnight,”
Benny starts to walk away again when he sees the light switch and hits it.
“Wait Benny, can you leave it on?”
To which he keeps the lights off but turns the dial back a little bit so it’s not nearly as dark as it was, compromise.
“Is this okay?”
“Yeah, thanks. Goodnight.”
And so Courtney just lay alone in the mostly dark room, under the covers but too uncomfortable to sleep for a while, just staring at the ceiling as her mind went a mile a minute. She’d heard of “Imprinting” before, they all had really but she’d never seen it herself and she didn’t think really anyone else of their group had either with the way they’d talked about it. It was always talked about to be this really rare phenomenon but it happened with Shape-Shifters. Though as rare as it was supposed to be she’d heard it talked about in such detail that she couldn’t think of this possibly being anything else but it. And also, just the fact that Benny was somebody she didn’t even know and somehow had this huge feeling come over her with, the first time that they’d ever truly looked up each other. So, she really couldn’t find any other explanation to the point that it was truly getting under her skin and stopping her as she tried so desperately to fall asleep as comfortable as the bed was.
It got to the point that she just got out of the bed out of frustration, just pacing back and forth, talking to herself trying to stay light in her volume as she tried to think this through and find an answer and also thinking about what exactly had happened and what she’d seen.
OMG! And was Benny a vampire?
No, he didn’t seem to have the teeth for that, or could they hide them?
What had happened she went over again.
Benny and herself looked each other in the eyes for the very first time and a sudden excess feeling of heat entered into her body, all the way from her head to her feeling it all in her fingertips and even to her feet a little bit, and then she kinda just completely zoned out and started seeing nothing but these images of herself and him intertwined…
She tried to remind herself that these images could definitely be fantasy, that definitely has happened. The way the feeling always sounds in the stories is how it’s supposed to be completely one sided.
Imprinting normally is supposed to be this gravitational pull that the imprinter feels for the imprinted. A need to do anything to please and protect a “soulmate.” But it’s always supposed to happen way later than the first transition?...like it could happen now, but it normally doesn’t this early ... Courtney never felt this need for a partner before but now is she being told Benny is meant to be her “Soulmate?” And she knew that Soulmate could mean a lot of things, but it was always introduced to her as how it was supposed to be in a romantic sense…
And then the thought came to her.
“If Benny’s my soulmate, then I can’t go home…”
If she were to leave her soulmate it would cause her to go crazy until she was to mentally off herself...Courtney was going to have to stay in White Chapel…
Courtney couldn’t take this mental battle anymore, the other two had to be fully asleep by now, she couldn’t hear anything coming out of Benny’s bedroom and she needed answers, and there were tons of witchy type sorcery supplies here...there’s got to be a book or something that could help her. She assumed, telling herself that it would be okay and so Courtney went to the little knob on the wall that Benny had used earlier and she’d turned it up, in the same way she’d seen him use it, just a little bit more until she could see much better and then she started looking on the table.
And she didn’t have to look too long, thankfully for her, the book that Grandma Weir was looking at earlier was still out on the counter and pretty much open to a spread of pages about were-creatures, wolves pretty specifically being they are normally the most common type.
On the first page wasn’t the information she’d been looking for, she had to flip through a few pages about their claws, hair, there was some information on her transition that would be much more helpful once she got her memories fully back. Now though she was more scared than ever, what if she did do something truly horrible and these people rejected her and would separate her from her soulmate. That just couldn’t happen.
But finally, after a few flips through she found something that looked like it might be able to help her….
“Find what we’re looking for?”
The voice totally caught her off guard and made her jump pretty high with a snarl as she turned around to see it was only Benny’s grandma. How long had she been awake with this? it only felt like 20 minutes maybe.
“I’m sorry, I know I should be asleep, or should’ve at least asked but...” Courtney didn’t really know how to finish the sentence as she held the book in her arms feeling pretty guilty doing so.
“Nonsense.” Grandma dismissed, waving it off. “You’re curious about your heritage, it's perfectly normal to want to find out more information. Now where are we?”
She grabbed her glasses from the table, putting them on her face, and took the book from the blue haired girl.
“Imprinting, what’s this?”
The earth priestess went ahead and read the little passage of what little the author of the book knew of the rare phenomenon. While Courtney stood off to the side quietly not really knowing what to say.
“Imprinting, now why would you care about this? It says here that it happens so rarely unless…”
Grandma Weir kinda picked up very quickly what was happening here as she peeked up to look at Courtney as they spoke and noticed the way the girl was sat back down and picking at her nails followed by the blush on her cheeks.
“You imprinted on someone?”
Courtney shrugged, not knowing really how else to respond.
Grandma read over the page one more time to make sure the information really sticks and then she closed the book and just rested it on her lap as she sat with the girl and looked over her.
“Well seems between this and your hair you are one special shape-shifter, you’ll have to tell me about him. Unless well, you didn’t imprint on Rory, did you?”
“Rory?” Courtney didn’t yet recognize the name.
“You know the little blonde one, got in your face, tried to kiss you, made you scream. He’s a sweet buy but can really be a lot, and he’s a vampire you know...” Grandma started to ramble, and Courtney had to stop her and shake her head.
“Wow, yeah I'm sure he’s great but no, not him.”
“Oh well that’s too bad, he seemed pretty smitten with you, you’ll have to let him down pretty easily..” Courtney just sat their kind of awkwardly nodding, cringing at the idea of having to tell the kind, older woman that she’d imprinted on her grandson…
“So who is he?” She just looked at her fingers again and did not say anything.
“Or a she? Perhaps?”
Courtney shook her head but still didn’t look up or say anything.
“Well, you’re going to have to tell me about him if you want me to help you.” Courtney just looked up at her awkwardly, dang Grandma was definitely good at this.
And with the look she was receiving, Ms. Weir put two and two together pretty easily.
“Oh, I see, okay well then. Seems, that means you won’t be going anywhere for a while then?”
As much as she’d really wanted to go back for her family and her people, this didn’t really work that way and her plans were now going to have to shift pretty drastically and pretty quickly. She would find them, but she'd have to explain the situation to them and then maybe someone else might have to take her spot as leader, which she was kind of conflicted about currently. Her parents would be so disappointed but also they’d have to understand it’s the way of the imprint!
Courtney nodded in response to Ms. Weir’s question.
“Okay then, I will get you those herbs so we can see what’s happened to you and where you’ve come from, and you will stay here until we find your people?”
“Yes, thank you!”
“Okay, tonight we will make some better sleeping arrangements here.” She started digging into her pocket and pulled out a small wad that she handed to the young girl.
“If you're going to stay here you’re going to need some of your own stuff. While I’m gone I’ll leave a note for Benny to take you to town and you can get some of your own clothes, don’t need you walking around looking like whatever this is.” Grandma said and laughed at how Benny’s clothes looked and fit on her body.
“Thank you so much!”
“And you are welcome, Call me Grandma, I figure someday you will anyways so might as well start now. And then starting tomorrow I will help you figure out how to control your powers. Now I have to get going or I’ll be late, get some sleep deary!”

Chapter 1: DANCES WITH WOLVES! - My Babysitter's A Vampire (MBAV)! FANFIC!
Tumblr media
His fingers came back, skin turning pink tinted at the tips. Ethan shakes his hand out in front of himself after very quickly with a sharp wince, dropping her arm back down to hitting the ground. Only having felt her pale for barely a second but already feeling the bitter cold of her touch.
"Come on E. A little help? She's a lot heavier than she looks." Benny voiced, struggling to manage lifting the girl’s small form from the ground by himself.
"Right." Ethan sighs and rushes over to help his friend out.
Normally he would’ve thought to question it but before he even could, the answer automatically already started to enter into his mind, thanks to that of the boy’s newfound abilities. Eyes glowing a bright white in the darkness of the night surrounding them; the other three remaining of their group went still as they took notice that he must’ve just had a vision.
"Wait, Ethan what was that?" Rory questioned him when he came back too.
“Benny, we need to get her to your Grandma.” was all that the boy urgently responded with and given the nervous look on his face, nobody dared questioning Ethan further, just moving quickly and trusting that once they got there that they’d then receive the answers they were looking for.
It’s barely been a few days since the 5 teenagers; Ethan, Benny, Rory, Sarah, and Erica, had been each thrown into a new knowledge of their town, a world that they’d all originally thought they’d already understood completely, but as if in one very swift movement of one day they all realized they’d been all under the same misunderstanding.
At this point it’d just been 3 days since Sarah got turned into a fledgling vampire by her ex boyfriend Jesse, which in turn ended with Erica and Rory becoming full vampires just the very next day. And with everything going on and them needing to defeat Jesse before he took over White Chapel, just this last night did Ethan and Benny find out about their own abilities (and Benny’s Grandmother). Nothing ever seemed like it would go back to being the way it was again, it just wasn’t that easy as Ethan might’ve hoped.
And the frame of this passed out girl, her right side he’d started taking as he propped her one arm over his shoulder and led Benny to do the same with her opposite. This girl was just another example of the proof that things for them were only going to get crazier and hairier as time went on.
Just this morning Benny and Ethan entered the school building walking the halls to their lockers before their first class periods of the day and Benny was again excitedly going on about all of potentially infinite possibilities now that they know they are kinda, somewhat, supernatural beings, not vampires like their 3 friends but still something.
"Think about it dude! Cash, cars, candy!" Just 3 examples of all the things Benny's freely thinking they could achieve with their skills.
"So you'll only use magic spells for stuff that starts with C?" Ethan questions.
"Once we were merely High School Nerds, Now we're vampire killing, spellcasting rockstars, the world is our oyster! Benny exclaims as they walk and he should really be trying not to be so loud. Enough as for everyone else strolling in the hallways to not be able to hear them.
"Have you ever actually had oysters? Not something you want to swallow, more like something you cough up."
But Benny's attention and their conversation had now been cut short. As the boys turn the corner Benny tries to get that image out of his head but he doesn't find it too hard as now he has a new distraction. A girl named Della that as well as going to their school, she's another girl he'd gained a crush on when seeing her at the movie theater wearing a pretty nerdy shirt the night before. Not to mention they made out in the middle of fighting vampires at the "Dusk Premier". Ethan tried to warn Benny to keep from using his magic as much as he can but of course to no avail. As Benny is being truly himself and not listening to the advice of his best friend. Congers up a bouquet of fresh, purple, long stem flowers to give to Della and he walks away.
He's gone for a little bit while Ethan sees Sarah again, now with a little bit lighter hair than it was the night before and it's so obvious how as good of friends as the two of them currently are; Ethan definitely wants to be more than that with the way he looks at her, and she asks him about borrowing some money.
But Benny saves him from his own awkwardness when he comes right back and tells the two about how Della loved the flowers but you can now see she's crying. Benny tells them excitedly about how Della told him that her dog had just died the night before.
Wonder if it has anything to do with the vampires?
Sarah leaves and Benny goes way too in over his head with the exciting idea ("exciting" only to him), starts rambling over this whole plan he has about how "It's so guaranteed that Della will fall in love with me if I can bring her dead dog back."
Ethan tries to stop him in his stupidity and obviously getting exasperated in the process.
But obviously Benny is again ignoring his best friend.
"IF HARRY POTTER WERE HERE, HE'D SMACK YOU AROUND!"
Ethan yells and chases after him.
But as much as Ethan tried to get him to, Benny just wouldn’t drop it. He went as far as to shove a video camera into his sorceress grandma's face and try to ask her about which potion of spell he could do to bring the beloved puppy back. But as smart as she is and how bad he is at lying.
Yeah of course it didn't get him anywhere.
So instead Benny somehow got into her room and on her "Secret shelf" he stole 3 different little potion bottles and each being a different color.
Coming to his best friend in his "time of need" he rode over to Ethan's on his bike carrying the small vials and begging him to take a look to see which of the 3 was the 1 he needed.
And of course hating conflict, yeah Ethan couldn't tell him no.
Holding the bottles in his hands he saw a vision of all 3 magic potions all at once.
"FOCUS."
Ethan first seen the blue: a raven cawing and then flying away off a branch.
Red: Hair growing out of the fingernails, a possible early stage of a werewolf, or other were animal transformation.
And then finally the yellow shows a hand raising up out of the dirt it's been buried in.
Telling Benny the tiny little tidbits he saw, Benny just snatches the small yellow vial back into his hand without warning even as much as the other brunette had been trying to..
"Sweet, Della's dead dog, thank you! I have a very long road ahead, and a pooch to summon from the dead. ENGAGE!"
"Benny! Benny, wait!"
And then Benny rides off leaving a very sweaty and very worried Ethan behind. Yeah, he just didn't have a very good feeling about this.
And just when he's getting easily frustrated trying to think what to do, I mean he could have just ran after him, I mean Benny couldn't be that much faster on just a bike, but I guess Ethan didn't think of that as "smart" he's supposed.to be…
Well, his answer arrived in the form of Rory floating down right next to him and scaring the pants off his fellow nerd.
"Boo!" Making Ethan jump and scream.
"DON'T DO THAT!"
"I was working on my ninja skills, Check out my new card" He hands Ethan what looks like a business style card.
Ethan and Benny are sometimes a little bit annoyed by Rory's antics such as this, although he thinks of himself as just as close to the 2 as they are to each other. But that just isn't really the case.
"What does that mean?"
"Rory: Vampire Ninja!" Rory says and tries to do a "sneaky like" ninja type pose as he takes his card back from Ethan.
"Look, Benny went to Della's. Do you know where she lives?"
"No, but I know a sure way to find out."
"How?"
And as fast as he could ask Ethan almost immediately regretted his question as the blonde came up behind him, wrapping his arms around him and Rory started flying.
"Air Rory!"
Maybe he should’ve taken a few more precautions to make sure they weren't seen? But lucky for Rory they weren't. Next thing they knew it's gotten dark out and they've used their advantage of height over the small town and they pretty quickly found Benny in a neighboring backyard. The 2 boys dropped in on him.
And I mean literally.
Benny had just finished pouring the potion on where he found that Della had buried her beloved dog "Puffles" in their backyard. When Rory had dropped Ethan and he landed almost directly on top of Benny.
"ETHAN!" Benny screaming while still trying to keep his voice down.
"DO NOT Sneak up on a dude who is waking the dead!"
"Keep it down, come on let's go before you do something stupid. I mean more stupid!"
"Too late, I already did. Nothing happened I…"
And then Rory jumped in spooking them both. "BOO YA!"
Benny catches his breath…."Rory…I don't care how undead you are, I will kill you…"
"But first to kill Vampire Ninja, you must first find…"
And then Ethan heard something….
"Wait, shhshh." He spoke to the boys still bickering between themselves and trying to be the voice of reason to stop them. "Guys shut up!" Getting a little louder and more frustrated with all their antics, specifically today but also now he started second guessing why he was even really friends with them to begin with.
"What is that?" Rory questions with a worried look on his face, they couldn't make out exactly what type of a noise it was but that it sounded almost like kind of familiar territory to them all now.
"Is that?" Benny questioned.
They started hearing hissing sounds nearby, like it could be just behind them. Happening on the street over. There were small sounds of voices and then they heard what they thought of as a whimper of a howl. Benny took a second look as he almost thought it might be Puffles until he realized the noise was a little too loud to just be any normal dog. The boys weren't prepared, so they weren't sure what to do in the situation. But without being prompted and thinking he could make use of his new "Ninja identity." Rory sneakily floated up a little higher to see if he could get a better look to clearly know what was going on and it turned out to be for the better.
"Wow! There's a fight! I think it's a group of 3 guy vampires attacking this girl! And she is SMOKING HOT!"
Rory again spoke a little bit too loudly to his friends, but thankfully in the scuffle they were too preoccupied with their current prey to hear anything else and their smell was highly averted as well to think of smelling the two human boys just nearby.
"REALLY HOW HOT WE TALKING?" Benny reacted excitedly…God that boy just can't keep it in his pants now can be.
"Well if it's 3 vampires against 1 girl I'm gonna guess she isn't gonna be too good looking for long." Ethan replied.
"I don't know, she's somehow lasting a good little while." Rory responded a little impressed but also just curious and concerned. This definitely got all the boys a little curious about this girl but they wouldn't get any answers if she were dead.Is she possibly another vampire? They didn't think so but couldn't be too sure so; Ethan being Ethan, the first thing he could think to do, he pulls out his flip phone and immediately calls Sarah.
And after like barely 2 seconds of explaining the circumstances there she was.
The boys came out from their stances behind Della's home.
Officially Della's beloved Puffles had been completely forgotten by Benny in favor of the "hot possibly a vampire chick?" They would just have to deal with the repercussions of that decision tomorrow. But as for right now, moving to.get a better view the 3 guys see that now Sarah and Erica have zoomed in to the very front of this fight. The "hot chick" now passed out on the sidewalk behind them. Was she dead?
Well, the girls started fighting them back and even a fledgling Sarah was still making some pretty hard hits. Hissing and showing their teeth and glowing eyes at them.
Kicking them pretty easily until eventually the two girls won the battle and Ethan was able to throw in a match that he now conveniently always carried around with them. They burned the two vampire bodies until they eventually just disappeared altogether without making too much noise, just turning to ash without a trace of having even been there to begin with. But now it just begged the question of the girl's life. A very pale girl they could see her skin was almost straight up white and they wondered if that was because of sickness or if she'd been drained out. And she had this crazy long and icy looking blue hair.
Sarah hesitantly ran up to her, put her fingers to her neck to check for a pulse and nodded to say that she'd still been breathing...
And then Erica made a kind of scrunched up face as her best friend got closer to the girl's body, so out of it.
"Is it one of you nerds, or does she really stink?!" She stated in her kind of mean girl whine.
Ethan and Benny couldn't tell what Erica had meant but upon her having said it Rory and Sarah both started nodding as being vampires they could smell it. For Sarah it just was not as strong as for her 2 friends.
"Well, what should we do?" Sarah asked the group.
"What do you mean, she was being attacked, we stopped them, saved her life. I don't think there's anything else we have to do." Erica responds.
This is when Ethan jumped in. "What do you mean, guys we can't just leave her here like this."
"Guys he's right." Benny and Rory agreed smiling but maybe with not as innocent of intentions.
"Well, I'm gonna go ahead and leave you alone with that.” Erica spoke to which Sarah just rolled her eyes. “I don't know what this is but it's not worth wasting my time." And just like that Erica was gone and so that left just Ethan, Benny, Sarah and Rory to figure out what to do about this poor girl. Well they didn't for sure know she was poor yet. Their questions all put on temporary hold as Ethan and Benny carried the girl's arms over their shoulders, heading to Benny's house to Benny's grandma. And leaving the dog he'd just brought back to life sat whimpering to itself in the dirt of the hole it was just buried in, in Della's backyard.
***
“So, what are the chances this is like a Snow White, Sleeping Beauty situation?” Rory asks the boys while they all and Sarah look over the bed in front of them where lay the so far unnamed, passed out girl that they found on the sidewalk.
“What are you talking about?” Ethan chimes in.
“You know in the fairytales, where the beautiful, oh majestic, fair maiden is asleep after being poisoned or some magical thing happens to her, and her prince arrives and kisses her and then she wakes up and they live happily ever after!” Rory might be getting a little too excited about this idea.
“Rory, hate to burst your bubble dude but I don’t think that is going to work!” Benny pipes up seemingly really annoyed.
“And why not?”
“Well for one I don’t think there’s any fairytale where the prince is a vampire!” Benny grinds his teeth; he's seething so hard.
“Oh, so you want her, is that it?” Rory, now getting annoyed himself, starts to question.
“Do I want her? I have Della, remember?”
The two start arguing over and over again to the point that Sarah started getting so annoyed she started rubbing her temples as if she could even get a migraine anymore. But it didn’t matter either way she was going to have to put a stop to this, so she got in between them and pushed them apart, trying to shush them.
“Really guys, you’re really doing this now? Besides, we don't even know anything about her. She could have been asking for that fight,” Sarah starts.
“Or if not, she could be some helpless girl, and then what makes you think she’d even be nice. She could be terrible.”
But of course, Rory couldn’t care less when he chimes in cutting Sarah completely off. “BUT SHE’S HOT!”
Taking one more look at what they could even read of her facial features Rory decided to risk it as he moved from his friends and inching closer to the bed.
And so this is the moment Ethan dictated being good enough to reveal what his vision showed him.
“Wait Rory! She’s a Werewolf!”
Which totally might’ve been really bad timing because right as Ethan said this Rory had had his face really close to the poor girl’s on the bed, but at the news he started turning to make a confused sound at his friends’ words, starting to turn back towards them, but his face still remained in the poor girls and of course this was the exact moment she started to wake up.
Starting out with just a little baby type yawn sounding like that of a puppy, turning and taking her surroundings in for literally only a few seconds before realizing they were different to what she last knew, and that the people in the room with her were also not familiar to her.
“What, wait..where am..” Turning just to see herself face to face with Rory and like really really close face to face, screaming so loudly that Benny’s grandma had rushed back in.
“AHHH!”
“Oh my, what have you boys done now?” She called before grabbing a small amount out of a potion bottle with a dropper and dropping it into her hand and then blowing it on the tearful eyed, terrified looking girl who instantly fell back asleep, but at least this time it seemed more peaceful.
“Ethan!” Sarah yelled in frustration obviously and hit his arm. To Sarah that was super light but for Ethan he still ended up rubbing it out of pain.
“Ow! What was that for?”
“How could you not tell us she’s a Werewolf?”
“Oh, so you had a vision?” Benny’s grandmother jumped in to question the new Seer.
“Yeah, when I grabbed her arm.” Ethan responded still sore and a little worried about what this could mean for them.
“Oh, well then that means I better be brushing up on my knowledge, there haven’t really been many “Were-creatures” around here so I’m afraid I don’t know quite as much about them as some other beings.”
As Benny’s grandmother says this she grabs and puts her glasses over her eyes while trying to look into a book of spells. Flipping through the pages, and upon realizing she won’t be finding much of what she’s looking for she tosses that one aside and grabs one strictly on creatures of the particularly mythical. And seems she very quickly lands upon a page she’s happy with.
“Okay, Ethan,” She waves a finger while still looking through the pages to bring him closer. “Now, what exactly did you see?”
“I don’t know exactly, it just seemed like a pair of really shiny crazy looking eyes, the moon becoming full, a wolf howling, and then she seemed to be standing over a body crying.” Ethan answered as truthfully as he could recall.
“Okay, yeah definitely sounds like the girl could be a werewolf. Do you know how old she looks to you?” The priestess asks while licking the tip of her finger and flipping the page over, seriously focused.
“She could possibly be around our age, why?” Benny answered his grandmother.
“Yup, that poor girl. It says here that the first full moon after becoming that of 16 years of age is when a werewolf has their first ever transition period. Poor thing must’ve transitioned when something happened, and she got lost. And you said you found her being attacked by some vampires?”
The group nodded.
“Well, that checks out. It says here that Werewolves and Vampires are naturally born enemies. I’m surprised you two didn't notice anything?” Now she was motioning between Rory and Sarah.
“Well, Erica said something about her smelling bad.” Sarah responded.
“And what about now?” Grandma Weir asked.
“I can smell it but it’s not that strong for me.” Sarah answered to which Rory nodded agreeing when she looked to ask him the same.
“I don’t mind it.” Grandma Weir laughed that one off as she probably could grasp what he’d meant by that.
“Okay, I might have something that can help with that,” the Priestess responded before sprinkling another little something over her body that had looked like it could be herbs of a kind. And with that the vampires seemed a little relieved at the loss of the heavy stench before them.
“Guys, if she’s a werewolf and they really do hate vampires like she says then we got to do whatever it takes to patch her up and get her out of here.” Ethan responded, trying to take responsibility for the situation.
“Wait, Ethan, why?” Rory pouted looking at her and reaching for her hand and started rubbing the back of it, then looking back to Ethan longingly like that would make him change his mind.
“I’m sorry Rory.”
“But this is my future wife we’re talking about.”
“Rory, were you not even listening?” Sarah jumped in to agree with Ethan.
“I don’t care, our love could overcome all obstacles.” The blonde replied positively.
“Are you serious Rory? We don’t even know her?” Sarah was just getting angry now at the overly immature boy. He wasn’t taking things seriously at all.
“Rory, listen to Sarah, she could find out you're a vampire and then rip your face off. And don’t you dare say you can heal yourself because you can’t if you’re already dead.” Ethan chimed.
And before they could say anymore Grandma Weir seemed to understand where things seemed to be heading and that could go on forever knowing what she did about Rory, so she got in between them to break it up.
“Okay, okay you two. You boys all need to stop with this fighting, I don’t think that’s going to be helping anything, so why don’t you all run along, and I'll wait for her to wake back up and I’ll talk to her and once I get some information, we’ll see what we can do.”
Everyone nodded in agreement at this decision all except Rory seemingly defeated as they all walked away and left Benny’s grandmother with the girl. But it was probably the best they could do anyway as they’d overall probably have much better luck with her not having to be so intimidated with all the extra eyes staring at her again, and no Rory trying to kiss her awake. So, grandma waited. Thankfully she didn’t have to sit there too long either. The group stepped away but not all that far so they could still hear everything when the girl once again woke up in the bed and started understandably freaking out a little.
The girl’s eyelids fluttered open as her senses slowly began to return to her. The unfamiliar surroundings and the unfamiliar human scents were enough to send adrenaline coursing through her veins. Her eyes snapped open, wide and alert, as her ears caught the steady heartbeat of someone sitting nearby.
She saw Grandma Weir, a gentle smile on her face, looking back at her with understanding eyes that seemed to hold years of wisdom. But her instincts screamed at her to flee, to protect herself from these strangers.
With a low, menacing growl rumbling in her throat, the girl’s lips curled back to reveal her glistening sharp teeth. Panic began to well up within her as she realized she was far from the familiar comfort of her cave and the safety of her pack. Her muscles tensed, and her hackles rose, the wolf within her demanding dominance and control in this unfamiliar territory.
Grandma Weir remained unfazed, her expression unwavering. She spoke in a calm voice, like a soothing lullaby that tried to pierce through the fear. "Easy, dear. You're safe here. No one's going to hurt you."
Muscles tense, her senses were on high alert. She tried to push herself up from the bed, but her limbs felt weak and unfamiliar. As her fear gave way to frustration, she began to snarl and bare her teeth, a display of dominance she had learned from her pack.
"I understand you're scared. But you're not captured here. We just want to help."
The girl gripped the sheet of the bed really tightly into her fist and covered herself almost as if she thought that she had been naked. Her fear and disbelief definitely easily read within her mystical eyes. They started shining purple, brighter and brighter with her ever-changing emotions. Until a single tear started to fall down her cheek as she panics.
“Calm down! Calm down!” They could hear as Benny’s grandmother tried cooing, but it wasn’t really working, as the young “were-creature” throws her sheets off and tries to get around the earth priestess and out of the bed and the room altogether, but she didn’t make it too far. A sudden wave of dizziness and weakness washed over her. She let out a pained whine, her bravado crumbling as she struggled to remain upright. As when she‘d come to reach the nearby wall with a large mirror hanging and in seeing her reflection she just screamed. Thus, causing the rest of the group to come run back in and staring at the trainwreck of a girl standing right in front of them.
“Did you do this to me?” Pain momentarily forgotten as she screams while yanking at, taking fistfuls of the bright and icy looking blue hair, scrunching it around her head. “WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?” She shouts to seemingly really anyone who would care to answer her.
“By god, nothing dear. We didn’t do that. That was the color of your hair when we found you.” Ms. Weir answered, trying to calm her and stay calm herself.
“Found me?”
“Yes, they said they found you on the streets being attacked by a group of vampires.”
“Woah, what? That can’t be, I've never even seen any vampires before.” For a moment she had started to calm down but at this news she just started freaking out even more and tears were definitely threatening to spill out of her unnatural colored eyes to over her pale cheeks, her voice getting louder and more frantic until she spoke again very soft, almost just to herself, although they barely could, they did still hear her.
“I was supposed to be in the cage..”
Benny’s grandma, and even to some degree the teenagers all standing around her and staring, started to almost kind of feel bad for the girl as she started trying to coo her closer and put her arms around the girl’s shoulders and lead her back over to the bed.
“How about this hmm? We all just calm down and you tell us what you remember so we can try to help you find wherever you came from?” The young girl’s snarls subsided, and her hackles slowly lowered. She gazed at Grandma Weir, her eyes flickering with uncertainty and curiosity.
“Wait, you aren’t going to hurt me?” She asked almost quietly, whimpering like a puppy.
“Oh, heavens no, now why would we save your life just to torture you here?”
“My mom always told me stories of people trying to hurt our kind.”
“Okay, how about we start with something simple like your name shall we? And then you could tell us all about your mother and these stories?”
The girl was still definitely afraid, but she’d seemed to really find some kind of connection to Grandma and looked more somewhat comfortable as she was guided to sitting back down on the bed with her, for whatever reason. Her growls then began to subside as her ears picked up the sincerity in Grandma Weir's voice. She was used to following the commands, the idea of being helped rather than controlled was new to her. Maybe her kind expressions reminded her of her mother she just mentioned, they didn’t know but she definitely tried to avoid looking at any of the group of similarly aged teens, especially avoiding all eye contact from anyone in the room at all.
“So, your name dear? Can you remember?” Grandma tried to ask as kindly as she could muster, to which the blue haired girl slowly nodded.
She took a deep breath and was a little hesitant, but she eventually ended up looking into the older woman in front of her eyes and upon seeing a very genuine look she went ahead and sighed. Deciding to just hope she was telling the truth and trust her. Really hoping she wouldn’t come to regret it but she just wanted to get home so...
“My name is Courtney.”

-V I C I O U S !- A Stranger Things Fanfiction! (OC x Steve, OC x Billy, OC x Eddie) Intro: Meet Dani Henderson!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WORD COUNT: 7,379! Sorry it’s so long! The story really starts next chapter, This is more of an intro chapter, SO ENJOY!
“5 years. It’s About Damn Time.”
5 years was all that Dani could think about, when the plane finally landed and she was told she could stand up from her seat and stretch out her back after a 8 hour flight from California to Indiana. She stretched out her arms and covered her mouth as she yawned while reaching into the overhead compartment that’d been above her seat and contained her only bag, a small backpack holding her barest of necessities. Pulling it out she almost hit herself in the face with it but ignoring that she just slumps it over her left shoulder and joins everyone in walking off the plane.
All that she’d had on her was a couple changes of clothes, some hygienic essentials, a journal and pen, a couple paints and brush, a small teddy bear that she’d gotten as a gift from her dad (he might’ve been a deadbeat most of her life but he was still her dad, and not knowing whether she’d see him again and if not how long until, she’d held onto it, even if she shouldn’t), and then just an old Walkie-talkie.
Whenever she’d looked at it all of this time she’d just remembered Dustin, how young he’d been and how he didn’t understand, couldn’t grasp the idea of losing his sister and in other ways maybe even a better best friend to him than even Mike, Will, or Lucas could’ve ever been. They’d just had a different type of connection. He was just so frail, so upset and crying while their shared father tried to pull her and tug his sister away from him, potentially forever. All Dustin knew at the time was that him and his friends had these Walkie-talkies and between them they could still talk to each other even if they were as far away as being at their own houses. So while Dustin was a smart kid; in a moment like this his feelings had clouded his senses to remember that even that connection had been faulty sometimes so somewhere as far as halfway across the country she wouldn’t really be able to reach him how he’d dreamed that she’d be able to.
But not wanting to give up hope or crush her younger brother’s spirits she’d taken it anyway and every single day she’d turned it on and let Dustin know that she was there even though she knew he’d never been able to hear her with that frequency. But she did it anyway and now it was finally the time she would come home and could give it back to him as she wouldn’t need it anymore. Because once she got back she was never leaving him again.
Dani said goodbye to the flight attendant as she stepped down from the aircraft and walked down the hall to the gate to where she was meant to be meeting Claudia. Now Claudia may not have been Dani’s real mom but she was Dustin’s and with them being half siblings by just their father; Claudia was the only mother Dani ever known. As her entire childhood, up until having been taken away, their father and Claudia had been married so while she never met her birth mother Claudia had taken care of her as if she were her own.
And now with her ex-husband, and Dani’s father, now going to prison for god only knows how long after being caught for yet another huge drug bust, She was going to continue to do so. She didn’t even want to lose her the first time but she’d had no choice in the matter then being that Dani was never really hers. Heck she’s only getting her back now because the mother was never on the record and any other immediate family of his didn’t want her.
That didn’t bother Dani herself one bit though, she never wanted to leave in the first place and California just never felt right for her without her family even though she was able to make some new friends at her new school, but they also never got passed being the type you just hang out with in classes and at lunch but never anytime after. So Dani had spent a lot of time at “home” in her dads small and crummy apartment just wondering why he’d even wanted to bring her here in the first place as he so obviously could barely afford it. She mostly had to learn to take care of herself because he was never home anyway. All she ever even ate was ramen or pop tarts that she would get out of the lobby’s vending machines with the quarters she could scrounge up from helping the neighbors with their chores.
She managed there but had a lot of depression issues being that she never truly felt herself at home so when the apartment was infiltrated by the police, she was paired up with a social worker. She was happy to find out she was going to be sent home back to her small, quaint and comfortable town of Hawkins, Indiana. So small that everyone basically knew each other and nothing crazy ever happened there.
“Are you ready?” The older woman who looked to be in her mid-thirties asked Dani as they were approaching the gate and just on the other side of that door would be Dani’s mom and brother waiting for her. God she couldn’t wait to just be reunited and hug them both to death as they haven’t even gotten to talk even a word since she’d been away. Now that she was thinking of it, would either of them even recognize Dani when they’d see her? That wasn’t the type of thing she’d thought about. She was just so excited that she didn’t think she’d had to, but now she was having some second thoughts.
The door opened.
Taking one last breath of both relief and nerves if that’s even possible to be doing at the same time, Dani took a running start ahead of her social worker and even busting through some people further ahead in the line than herself.
“Sorry sir.” “Excuse me!” “Sorry.”
Her social worker did end up having to run after her a little bit.
But even with all of her excitement it did end up kind of almost being for not, having done all that because the second she got to the front where all the people stood to greet their friends and family members, some even holding up cards of names. She didn’t immediately see Claudia or Dustin and for a second it almost broke her heart. Thinking how she swore; knowing what she thought she did about Dustin, she swore he’d be at the very front of the group just waiting for her arrival to come run up and let himself be taken into his older sister’s arms.
But that wasn’t what she was seeing.
She felt herself just stop in place almost feeling as if she was now frozen to the ground and tears almost flowing from her face when she just sees all the other families reunited, hugging and crying together in the same way she thought that they’d be doing right now as well.
But no she stood just all alone. And she was still crying alright, it just ended up being for a different reason.
Thankfully though it didn’t last too long, her feelings of sadness, as her eyes finally found Claudia trying to break her way through the crowd to find her. And when their eyes finally met for her first time in what felt like forever to her, it was like that exact moment her feet had been melted from the ground as her tears now turned to happiness and she sprints from her worried social worker, sprints to the outstretched arms of her mother to be taken in and loved, to never be taken away from again. 16 year old girl now feeling again like she was just a baby, like when she was 5 and didn’t want her mom to leave her at her elementary school for the very first time.
“Oh my gosh, sweetie!” Claudia gave her the biggest hug Dani had almost ever felt and then reaching out to give her a full once over and see her better, she held Dani’s cheeks in her hands.
“Oh my, wow, look at you darling!” Her voice getting higher and a little squeakier in obvious surprise.
“You’re so big now, you look so different from when we last saw you! Did you lose weight?” Claudia questioned it as a joke but actually a matter of fact in had been true being that she didn’t really get home cooked meals and how little she actually ever had anything bigger than just a couple cups of noodles a day, yeah she was kinda forced to lose a good few pounds.
“Wow!” Claudia responds at the nod of Dani’s head and then turns her attention to the social worker, they shake hands and introduce themselves to each other and with that Dani is now good for them to go their separate ways. So the woman who Dani just realized she hadn’t even gotten the name of was left to go and get herself a returning flight back home, Claudia asks if she needs anything else before they go, if she has any other bags to go grab to which Dani snakes her head.
“Okay then Darling, let’s get you back home shall we? Huh?” She seemed so excited Dani wondered if she was missing something herself.
“Mom?”
“Mom?” Claudia seemed to be in her own little world to where Dani had to ask a couple times to get her attention back.
“Mom? Where’s Dustin?”
“Is he, like, in the bathroom or something?”
***
And this is where some of Dani’s disappointment had managed to settle itself back in.
“Dustin isn’t here?”
Claudia started driving the two of them from the airport just right outside of Hawkins, back to the home that Dani’s been dreaming up almost every moment for the past 5 years. Her old bedroom, she wonders but doesn’t say out loud, does it still look the same as when she’d last left it? How much has any of the town or any aspect of her previous life changed. 5 years is a long time and so far seemingly longer than she’d even thought it was being that Dustin isn’t here right now.
When mom told her that Dustin had some plans with his friends that he assured her he “just couldn’t put off” another piece of her heart having just been mended back up, broke again.
Not a huge chunk being that this wouldn’t be forever, of course it’s only one night, but just the fact that this happened to be the one night where after so long his sister was finally coming home and he wasn’t going to be there to pick her up from the airport, it did sting just a little. The fact that he really couldn’t insist on rescheduling his “campaign” for Dungeons and Dragons? He could do that any night…
But then Dani made herself feel kinda bad. Feeling like she was just being silly and selfish for wanting him to chose her over his friends...so while she sat kind of pouty in the passenger seat of the car, she did try to make herself take her mind off of it and try to instead focus on the positives and all the other things that she’d missed about her home.
For a long while the roads had been almost completely empty of any vehicles except their car, she tried to focus again how quiet it had been and how this was definitely the complete opposite of California. Back there the roads were never clear and even what would be a small walk between places in Hawkins, in California was an hour plus ride in the car to get anywhere. And here where the only sounds were of the birds chirping and the only scenery that of the forests and the trees. California no matter where you were; on the roads, at home, shopping, anywhere. All you ever heard was cars, loud people, and the worst of all the sounds of gunfire. Constantly feeling terrified by the idea of guns. But no need to worry about that now, the only people to need those here are the police.
Thus, Dani had gotten pretty accustomed to falling asleep on car rides when she would get too bored and there typically would be at least a half hour left until their arrival at whatever destination, so she was about to start drifting off with her head hitting the window.
But right at the point when she normally would start to fall, Claudia rubbed her on the shoulder to signal that they had arrived home now.
“We’re here, time to wake up kiddo.”
“Oh, really already?” Dani asked tiredly and started wiping at her eyes to which Claudia nodded.
“Thanks.”
It just didn’t feel real.
Even though she knew she was seeing it, she did have to second guess herself again and thinking maybe she did actually just fall asleep and this whole situation, whole thing about her coming back home was just the result of another one of her dreams again? It isn’t like this would be the first time that’d happened and when it would it would be pretty realistic feeling to her.
But yet again if she was just dreaming Dustin for sure would’ve been here….should’ve been in actuality but that is something else. She decided she’d try to teleport inside just to check and when she wasn’t able to she knew this had to be real for sure now.
So with one last wipe of her eyes she stepped out and slamming the car door behind her she didn’t even wait for Claudia, she ran ahead and digging into her bag for the key to the front door of the house, that she’d held onto all this time. Hopefully they haven’t changed the locks or else she just looked stupid now she thought.
But this is Hawkins there’d be no mean, except for maybe a stupid prank pulled by some high school kids.
“FOUND IT!” She screamed eureka!
Dani pulled the key out and seemingly as fast as the speed of light she’s gotten it in the keyhole, unlocked the door, and thrown it open. Admittedly a little harder than she’d intended on.
“Sorry mom.” She looks back at a still struggling to catch up Claudia. They smile a little awkwardly at each other. Claudia didn’t remember her being this much before. “What did her dad do this poor girl?” She said under her breathe.
And then here came the moment that she’d been waiting so long for to finally get, the satisfaction of stepping back into this house, and knowing it’s real this time, the second that she stepped her first foot back into it, the feeling had actually become so overwhelming.
Usually in her dreams she could imagine the looks of everything pretty realistically to what she remembered, and looking into it right now felt just so good, seeing that she ,for the most part, was pretty accurate as they haven’t redone a single thing since she last arrived.
But what she never really could pinpoint was the smell that it’d previously been. She had like a small idea but it never felt right so in her dreams after a minute of trying something out and it wouldn’t fit; she’d just imagine it gone and not smell anything at all.
But now was it, now she could smell it perfectly what she was always missing to feel, for real, herself at home.
It was like dusty coming off of some vintage, an antique feel, driftwood mixed with that of Mint and the peach smelling shampoo that mom used and the same sent of laundry detergent she’d wash everything in. Mom really liked her peaches.
Dani could even remember a time when dad used to call her that she liked them so much. “Peaches.” And she’d giggle….she remembered when they used to love each other so much and she hopes that’s the type she’d find someday. Now she wondered if Dustin was even old enough to remember them before the constant fighting. Probability says no.
But the smell started to overcome her senses so much even before she stepped past the door frame. Daniella felt herself feeling like a little kid again. Back to before she even started to hate being called out as her full first name. Back before she was even a big sister maybe? She felt almost like her body was taken over from her for a moment. Not in control of her own limbs as her legs buckled underneath their own pressure and she just fell to her knees on the floor, her backpack slumping off her arms and onto the ground.
Before she even realized what she was doing her face fell into her hands and just tears of happiness and feeling so grateful, just flowed all outside of her body, the scents still wafting into her nose. Claudia could hear the sniffles as she stood behind and then coming up to hug this precious and crying, beautiful little girl in front of her from behind her back. Claudia wrapping her arms around the girls neck and Dani reaching up to hold them still so they could never be ripped from her again.
Overwhelmed but in the best way possible, Dani looked up from her hands in her lap, with glazed over eyes she tried to look around her and wipe the tears from her vision when she realized just how much they really blocked her view. She let go of her mom and her mom released her to and she just laughed one solid happy little laugh as she got up from her knees and actually wanted to touch something, anything to anchor her to the ground this home provided.
She put her arms on a cabinet and truly raised herself with it, putting one whole side's weight upon it. Touching all the little trinkets sitting around on the top (mostly cats). And just constantly wiping her eyes and now trying to stop her nose that had started to run just a little bit as well.
And then she heard it.
A meow!
“Mews?” She was truly shocked at this, accidentally basically having screamed the name when she saw her. This wasn’t something she’d always really imagined because while she expected she’d see her family again, just not for a really long time, when she left she’d figured this was the last time she’d ever see her little tabby cat. Except now she’s not so little anymore.
“You’re still alive! God momma’s gotta have been feeding you pretty good huh?” She whispered to her.
“Oh yeah, she’s my little cuddle buddy.”
Dani could just remember the day they’d found her, her and Dustin hearing something rummaging through the trash and then when they’d brought her in, oh my was their dad mad. He didn’t like cats but mom fell in love with her immediately, probably at this point how much her and her husband had been bickering all the time, she needed her. “Girls gotta stick together right?”
And so while dad just hated it and gave them one more thing to fight about. With a lot of begging from their kids the cat ended up staying (since no one else claimed her), now that’s not to say that sometimes she wouldn’t still be outside caught rummaging in the trash, but at least now the cat always had a home to return to. And with that momma named her “Mews.”
***
Seeing her old bedroom again, now this was something else.
It was the same but it was also very different from when she’d seen it last, Claudia kept all of her old furniture and in the same place. All of her old stuff within the room for her but it wasn’t all where she’d left it. And a part of her was happy that redecorating was now going to be a bit easier with the step already taken for her, but also she was a little bit disappointed to not see it all the way she’d have it left. It was like a time capsule for her. Something she’d wanted to run her hands over one last time now that she was older before she herself would’ve done the step her mother already had for her in advance.
She could now do that with her furniture. Furniture that she now is noticing she is also going to want to rearrange and her walls could really use a fresh coat of paint. Change the vibe up a bit. Going to her dresser drawers and to her old television, running her fingers over the old cracks within her childhood mirror, her vanity that she must’ve had a bit of a growth spurt as she stands too big for it now. Almost getting stuck and tipping over the little chair.
It falls onto the floor and Dani goes to sit on the bed instead. She’s now realizing just how much of all this old stuff, as much as she loves it dearly, to really be able to functionally be able to live her, just how much she’s going to have to replace.
Maybe she’d ask Dustin if he potentially would like to have a yard sale? She might have to get a job? But for now she just wondered where some of her extra little trinkets had gotten off to?
Turns out when Dani went to open the closet door that there was a special box on the top shelf inside. The same shelf that she use to have to stand up on her chair to reach before.
But now she can just grab it like it’s nothing.
Throwing the cute little flamingo covered box on the mattress, reminds her of the phase when she used to be obsessed with the birds after seeing them on a nature documentary with her dad; back then she always pretended to be one of them. Obsessed with them just because they were pink and back then she was way girlier and loved all things in the color.
But what really caught her off guard more than anything else; the top two things in this box. Two items she never wanted to leave behind in the first place. But Dani could still remember the exact moment she was made to. Them being ripped out of her hands and thrown back on the bed behind her, and she’d cried about that for days when her dad took her away without letting her go back for them: Steve’s Hawkins High Basketball team sweatshirt that he’d gotten from his dad, and (sitting just on top of it) the friendship bracelet he’d made for her. And she did one for him in return in their shared art class when she was in 4th grade and he was in 5th.
Steve Harrington: God was he the best friend she’d ever had. He was so special not even California could replace him. Dani could remember practically every single moment they’d ever spent together even now.
It was the first day of Kindergarten for her, 1st grade for Steve.
Dani could remember how Claudia for pre-school took her everyday and dropped her off, waiting with her and the hard goodbyes where everyday the young girl would stand crying as she didn’t want her mother to walk away. But she always had to. For the girls' own good. And so it was definitely hard but Dani got used to it as everyday would get just a little bit easier. Eventually she became okay.
But then things changed again when it became time for Elementary school.
Now instead of taking her everyday Claudia had to teach little Daniella how to wait at the bus stop. And seemingly this was going to be the most difficult task ever, for a while. She’d just have to get used to this like she’d gotten used to everything before. Eventually in theory she wouldn’t need to hug onto her mother’s legs for dear life when Claudia tried to leave. But it actually ended up going a lot easier really than they could’ve ever expected.
See, Daniella was SO EXCITED for her first day back to school. Now she was going to her first "big girl school" as her mommy called it. So excited that she wore her favorite pink princess dress with a big tutu, her favorite black converse sneakers, and a cute sparkly gold little tiara. She thought she was a princess back then. She was so excited thinking that her mom was taking her to school again but that excitement got suddenly confused. When Daniella went to run to get into the car and waiting for her mother to open the door so she could get in, but instead her mother had grabbed her hand and led her to start walking down the street.
Dani didn't understand what was going on as they stopped where there were a couple other families of a child or two each with at least one of their respective parents.
"Mommy, we aren't going to school?"
Claudia felt so guilty when she had to explain the bus stop to her daughter and how the young girl just clung to her and immediately started making a scene in front of everyone else there. She started crying and clawed for dear life about how now all she wanted was to be taken home. But for not.
As when the bus got there to pick up the kids Claudia basically had to drag her child, picking Dani up and forcing her onto the steps and the doors closing in her face and the vehicle driving away before she could try to get off again.
Thought she'd be crying the entire way to the school at that point.
But that isn't what happened.
Instead was the beginning of the probably most unlikely of friendships in all of Hawkins, but it was still the best there probably ever was.
Without further options; all that was left now for little Daniella Henderson was to just find a seat. So feeling defeated she just picked the first empty chair she could and put her head into her hands to sob.
But she didn't have to feel sad and alone for too, too long, thankfully..
His name was Steven Harrington; though he just went by Steve.
He was a year older than Dani as he was in 1st grade. And he didn’t even know her. All Steve knew at the time was that he saw this little girl at his bus stop, and he wasn’t sure about how she was dressed. But that maybe she’d just really liked the color pink, or maybe her mom had just dressed her up like that. But either way that if she really liked it, it was cool. And her hair was parted down the middle and pulled into these two pigtails on either side of her head and that he thought she looked pretty. That is until she’d started crying. Then he just felt bad but also understanding as it happened to him too on his very first day last year.
So when Steve saw this little girl sitting, crying all alone on the bus seat that was way bigger than she even was; Steve sat down next to her and just rubbed her back for a little while. He hoped to be able to comfort her until and after she’d stopped crying, he hoped that she would.
Steve really didn’t know what to do in these types of situations, even know being in them he’d just felt extremely awkward but he tried anyway because on that day all he could think was that maybe she’d just really needed a friend too.
“So if you’re a princess, would that make me a prince if we’re friends?”
Daniella looked up to the other voice, to see a pretty funny looking boy sitting right next to her, but he wasn’t like sitting properly. This silly boy sat back to the seat in front of them and legs to the chair they sat on, as if he was aiming for the sky. Dani wiped her eyes and tears away and just couldn’t help but to laugh at his silly ways and the faces he was now making at her.
“No, I think you look more like a troll!”
The both of them joyously laughing Steve gave her a look and a playful punch on the shoulder, and thus the most epic of friendships was born.
Now Dani and Steve were in different grades so when it came to classes they didn't get to really see each other all that much aside from sometimes getting into trouble playing in the library. But at recess and lunch you couldn't separate them, and of course the bus and bus stop!
School went from being something Dani dreaded going to everyday to being something she looked so forward to for anytime to be with her bestfriend, and then within the next year they started playing together after school at each other's houses as they became old enough.
And when Dustin started aging enough to, being 4 years younger than Dani, things did just get altered slightly as they'd adjust whatever game it was that they were playing to try to make room for Dani's younger brother.  Not that either of them minded Dani loves Dustin and Steve could see how happy she was to include him.
For a long while their families thought that they were going to have to end up together, just how they were with each other even though they were kids.
And it was like they knew it too.
You know traditionally; little girls having their sleepovers with all their friends, that's how you typically learned about making friendship bracelets. This is supposed to be the standard.
But nothing about Dani and Steve were standard. Dani never had any girlfriends to have any type of parties with. And so the way that she learned was in their 4th grade art class together: the teacher showed them each how to loop strings together to make a braid and with that and just adding in some beads with charms they made bracelets that they just had to tie together. They each choosing three colors of string that they looped together and using the beads with the letters of the alphabet on them they spelled out their own names.
Steve chose a cherry red for his, along with a dark almost navy but still kind of a royal looking blue, and a forest green.  Dani still being pretty young she was still in her girly phase; really she was kind of always in that phase the whole time living in Hawkins before, she’d chosen a Pink, Purple, and a lighter blue than Steve’s; Cyan.
And after finishing up tying their respective beads onto their craft projects they each tied the one they’d created onto each other's wrist, vowing to wear them forever to signify that their friendship could never be destroyed no matter what comes.
They even had one of those fake childhood weddings where he wore a sweater vest like how his mom would often dress him up for holidays with their more distant relatives. And she just wore another version of one of her princess dresses but in white. Ending with a cute kiss on the cheek and their bracelets actually used again to symbolize the idea of the rings.
The idea was that by the time they were in high school Steve would probably be a basketball player like his father was, from a very young age it’s been his dream and he was given that hoodie because he fell in love with the sport after watching his old man play so often. From the day he got it he constantly wore it even though the material swallowed him up, and thankfully the weather here was accommodating. And Dani everyone figured would probably by now be his girlfriend and on game days she would wear his sweatshirt around to support him, but by the time the game started she’d be on the floor doing her own thing. Probably being the loudest and proudest cheerleader out there; dancing and prancing in support of her man.
It all sounded like a happy image; maybe was starting to head that direction being that she still had that basketball hoodie even now. What about Steve did he ever get on the team?
Almost was enough to start Dani getting teary eyed again from just the thoughts of what might’ve been, but now they’d never know because instead on the same day as Dani and Steve started to try to figure out how far their feelings for each other did reach; the same day as Steve and Dani’s first time experimenting them with their first kiss. It was the same day that she was forced to leave him and without so much as a goodbye and a single word to each other ever since…
But now that could finally change!
Dani didn’t know what she was even going to do or whatever would she even say? But she didn’t seem to really be thinking that far ahead; all she was thinking was how she was back now and had to see his face again. She had to show Steve that she was home and this time permanently! She threw the box and its contents back onto the bed aside from the memories of her best friend as she just bunched them into her hands and without another word to her mother; Claudia beginning to become quite worried about her by now, Dani just ran out the door and down the street to where Steve used to live. Just praying that he still did.
“Dani! Where are you-“ Claudia tried to follow after her but she was too far gone now, her daughter couldn’t hear her so she just stood in the door and watched her go figuring she had a good feeling where she was off to in such a rush.
And she had been right, and their car was still in the driveway!
Dani decided it may be risky but she went with knocking on their door with their old secret knock, if his mom or dad answered they might be a bit confused being that they might not remember it so much, but if Steve was home and he heard he’d have no choice but to remember it and knowing Steve his curiosity would definitely have to get the better of him!
And so she knocked, god she was bouncing off her feet this girl was so excited but also so nervous. She didn’t even know what he looked like anymore and if he’d so easily recognize her how she looked now. Looks wise she wasn’t that different but how she dressed was a complete 180 as now she has had a more developed tomboy style based on California.
No one answered.
“Come on Stevie..” she mumbled under her breath. She knew someone had to be home if not him, at least his parents; there was a car parked in the driveway. So when no one was answering and she was about to give up and move on, disappointed but go back home to wait it out and just see him at school the next day and that would be the big moment of hopeful rekindling, the door then opened.
“Hello?” She was half turned to walk away so they hadn’t seen her face yet, just her dark auburn-brown, wavy, hair.
“Dani?” First of all she was so happy to be recognized so easily right off. Now that had her hopes feeling just a bit higher.
“Hi, is he here?” Hopefully, and cringely grinning.
“Oh no sweetie, we actually don’t really know where he is. So if you find him can you tell him to come home?”
She nodded disappointedly, and with that and walking home she thought this was the end of the idea for night. Again, all it would be was this night and then she could see him at school the next day and everything was great right?
Well now with having been missing practically everyone that she’d been so ready to see for 5 years no end, everyone she basically came home for, she wasn’t feeling so confident that everything was going to go for her the way that she’d planned it all out to be.
And she was definitely right about that but where she was wrong was in thinking they were even close to done.
***
It was nearing about 9’o clock at this point and she’d been home just patiently waiting on something. Anything. Eating and just watching tv with mom in the almost complete darkness now, the only light illuminating off the screen. They’d been doing this since 3 while she awaited her younger brother's arrival, finally so that they could be reunited, but so far to no avail.
Dani was about to lose her patience, so she said “Fuck it.”
“Dani! Language!”
“Sorry mom! It’s just that he should’ve been home by now, I came home today,” she tried not to sound too entirely pissed off. “I’m going to bike over to the Wheelers, is it still in the garage?”
“Should be honey.” Claudia nods while cuddling onto Mews.
And so Dani digs for childhood bike, maybe she’s even too big for it now she thinks but as she hops on finds that it still fits pretty well. Just that the color doesn’t really match her current style. Maybe she’ll spray paint it?
And then she bikes to the Wheelers home.
Dustin had been best friends with Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, and Will Byers ever since they’d all met in the second grade. He was the last to join their friend group but that didn’t mean anything as the second he’d arrived they’d all accepted him with open arms. Dani was the slightest bit jealous of him in that way. The four all bonded over their mutual love of learning to play D&D or Dungeons & Dragons. And they played together all the time in Mike’s basement like they were tonight. Apparently that’s why Dustin couldn’t be there at the airport because the campaign had already taken them a week and a half to plan by the time he’d found out she was coming, it was now 2 weeks at this point.
But Dani arrived in their front yard and threw her bike off to her side not even bothering to try remembering how to do the kickstand and struggling to stand it up properly, she just wasn’t in the mood now.
And knocking on the door was almost a kind of similar experience to that of Steve’s house, except here you could actually hear something on the other side of the door. So maybe the opposite situation? Voices pretty loud, sounding like they were arguing before someone finally came to answer after the second knock.
And then when someone did answer it was Ted, Ted Wheeler very cut and dry asking what Dani wanted and even who she is. Was she one of Nancy’s friends? and upon saying her name didn’t even jog his memory instead he just went ahead and called for a very obviously exhausted looking Karen, his wife. Asking if “she knew who a Dani was?”
Thankfully she did and she came to the door. She was holding a young girl that Dani didn’t even recognize. Did she have another child? She thought she would be done with that after Mike seeing how “great of a father Ted is.” But never mind that now, that doesn’t matter,
“Dani, wow look at you, wow you’re so much bigger now.”
“When have we ever seen this girl?” Ted could be heard from the door as he lounged in his recliner in the living room.
“Ted, this is Dustin’s older sister. Dani, we thought you were in California?”
At least you could tell Karen at least tried to sound genuinely kind and interested.
“Oh yeah, I was but I just got back today.”
“Oh well, then you must be excited to see Dustin, say it’s been how long?”
“5 years actually.”
“Wow, well yeah, you remember where the basement is? they’re just finishing up their game, should be picking up to come back upstairs” Karen said stepping aside so that Dani could come inside and make her way down to see her brother.
Why was she so nervous? It was only Dustin and no matter if she has changed it wouldn’t matter to him because he’d still think she was the most awesome older sister and still love her regardless.
Well while Dani was having a mini panic attack and trying to calm herself down, in the hallway on the way to the downstairs, she passed by what she could only remember to be Nancy’s room.
While Dani was Dustin’s older sister, Nancy was Mike’s and she happened to be the same age as Steve. And Will had an older brother their age as well named Jonathan. Now there was nothing that Dani had against either of the elder teen siblings of her little brother’s two best friends; it just happened that none of the three seemed to really have a connection. They only saw each other in mostly passing being their brothers, said hi every now and then and talked about very little things while they waited sometimes but it never went any deeper than events around town. Nothing ever too personal shared between them. Really they learned more about each other through the kids than themselves. They weren’t friends they weren’t enemies. Indifferent?
But nonetheless when Dani happened to pass by Nancy’s room and could hear a little bit of noise inside she figured she’d at least say hi to her as well, they never were friends before but maybe that could change too. Everything else was seeming to already. She just did a tap with two fingers. Just planning to make herself known as there but not enough to barge in. If the door was closed properly as she had assumed it was by looks; Dani really needed to learn not to assume, it wouldn’t have done that much. But it wasn’t closed properly was it….
The door creaked open just a little bit but enough to make the inside of her room still the least bit accessible for someone to see inside from the doorframe where she stood now. But to be fair, even if it was just a crack there was no way she’d have missed this.
The world seemed to now be moving in slow-motion and there was this really awkward pause for a moment when the two people didn’t realize yet that she’d even been there and continued their actions until they noticed. For them it was only mere seconds but for her it was as if an hour already went by. It was so slow, minutes and minutes of seeing every detail of their mouth movements until they broke apart.
Dani was utterly shocked, there was simply no other way to put it she was just in shock and couldn’t speak and it felt like a nightmare coming true as she stood awaiting, her breathe caught her throat with a tiny squeal that’s what finally got their attention.
Nancy Wheeler was sitting on his lap, him pretty much just holding onto her by her ass, lip locked. Nancy Wheeler was in a very passionate make out session with Dani’s best friend and potentially who could’ve been the love of her life. Would it have gone farther if she hadn’t shown up and stopped it?
“Steve?”
Turns out that Dani’s timing couldn’t have actually been any worse...

“Writing a book is so easy.”
Yes. Writing a book is the easiest thing in the whole world. In fact, let me show you just how easy it is!
Goal: change all this paper into a book.
Tumblr media
Eh, not that hard. I mean, you just have to read, right?
Tumblr media
Maybe scratch a few notes in the margins as reminders.
Tumblr media
Yeah, writing and editing isn’t time consuming or painstaking at all.
Tumblr media
In fact, I find it quite relaxing. Good meditation. No stress whatsoever!
Tumblr media
I mean, it’s not like writing a book involves any train of thought or decision making, like when to cut scenes, because whatever you write is perfect and there to stay!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, come on, it’s not like I’m going to rewrite the first chapter 51 TIMES to make sure it’s how I want it, right? That’d be crazy.
Tumblr media
And no, it’s not like I spent over 3,000 HOURS READING AND REVISING 14 DRAFTS OF THE BOOK to make this book readable.
Tumblr media
No sweat, no tears, no blood, and DEFINITELY no coffee stains.
Tumblr media
Nope, writing is the easiest job in the world. I don’t see why anyone thinks otherwise. I mean, all we do is scribble words and take a few out, right?
Tumblr media
We feel no satisfaction AT ALL when we receive a shipment of the final product for a book signing. *yawn* BOR–ING.
Tumblr media
Nope, we don’t get excited at all. It’s just another day in the life.
Tumblr media
And the sequels? Bitch, please. That’s child’s play.
Tumblr media
You’re right. Writing a book is so easy. It’s not stressful, not exciting, and it’s definitely not worth the reward of holding something that USED TO BE EXCLUSIVELY IN YOUR HEAD AND NOW YOU GET TO SHARE IT WITH THE WHOLE WORLD.
