thoughts on vivian ttyd (with spoilers)

it's kind of funny how people try to deny that vivian is trans by saying the 2004 japanese translations specifically call her a crossdresser or a boy who looks like a girl. While it's true that the party member descriptions and goombella's tattle refer to her as someone who looks like a girl but is actually a boy, she's only ever referred to herself as a girl and is sad when her sisters insist that she's a boy... which is similar to how transphobic people insist that trans people aren't actually the gender they identify themselves as and are actually the gender they were defined as when they were born.

If she defined herself as a crossdresser who was actually a boy, she would call herself a boy or be fine with being called a boy. But she's only referred to herself as a girl while others around her refer to her as a boy. Also considering that this game was made 20 years ago, it wouldn't be a surprise if japan used the word crossdresser to mean the same thing as transgender and that trans girls at the time were assumed to be boys who looked like girls (this hasn't just been a japanese perspective on trans people). I think the important part to understanding Vivian's identity is what she defines herself as, not what those around her define her as.

Anyway the vivian trans debates have the same vibe as this:
