Using Opal was admittedly a cheap ploy--
But an effective one. Hades did not regret it nor feel guilty as Opal skipped off. In fact, his shoulders relaxed. Surely, no matter Lou's mood or his fatigue, Opal would remind him why he should get up, why an event like this was worth going to, that he would enjoy his party, at least a little. If not for Adelaide's antics, then for Opal, who would delight everyone with her enthusiasm.
At least, assuming that using Opal would work.
But it had to, eh? Lou loved Opal more than-- anyone, besides, perhaps, his own siblings. He would not let Opal down.
When Belle and Opal came back down then, Opal as cheerful as ever, Belle with her update, Hades still sighed in relief. Hopefully whatever was going on with Lou-- this might solve it. At least for now.
"Alright," said Hades. "Thanks. I'll ah-- get the boys' shoes on."

"I know that. I tried to reason with him. He-- he does seem unwell, just--"
Hades struggled to say the word.
He was not sure why. Depression was a sickness, like any cold or flu. Yet it felt like a reaper sitting in the corner of the room, and if he spoke its name, then the reaper would draw nearer. Logically, that made no sense at all. Best to name the thing you fear. Best to speak it into the open.
It didn't help that Opal was whining and tugging on his hand, almost about to burst into tears.
"Please please please pleeeeeeeeeease," she whined.
He did his best to ignore her.
Hades took a breath. "Won't you go talk to him? You're-- better at these things than me."

Dear god.
Hades barely resisted the urge to roll his eyes at his wife. He tried to be sensitive to her social event... shall we call it an allergy? But in his opinion, a party for her mother-in-law was ten times better than any of the town events that he normally dragged her to. Since, Adelaide could be overbearing, but there should be less people and the food would be better.
Granted, he did agree with her. It was ridiculous to go to Lou's party... without Lou.
He lifted his shoulders, trying to ignore Opal's plaintive begging (quite hard, she had scampered over to cling to his hand). "Look, if you want him to go, you have to talk to him."

Still, Hades did not know what to do.
He wanted to argue. He wanted to drag Lou out of bed. He wanted to insist, to pull rank, but-- he had no rank. Lou was not one of his petulant children throwing a fit, even if right now, it felt that way. Even though Hades knew deep in the sinking pit of his chest, that Lou was not sick at all--
Or he was, but it was not the kind of sick Hades knew how to fix.
He came against the same wall again and again. His only other option would be to break the wall. But Hades feared such a choice. Because he did not-- want to break Lou.
And so silence descended, like shadows growing longer. He hesitated, but in the end, he could not do anything. He put a hand gently on the back of Lou's head for one moment more, then stood. "Alright," he said quietly. "Please do. Call her, I mean. We will miss you."
And then Hades headed for the door-- he'd have to tell Belle and-- hope she would know, better than him, what to do next.

"Ah-- an excellent idea, Pepa," said Hades and he grinned even wider. His short but informative time working at Queen's Boutique came in handy here. "Will you stop by Queen's Boutique to get some of Lana's products? I believe she has the best in town."

He wasn't sure if Adelaide would understand. She would certainly worry-- if there was one thing he knew about Lou's mother, it was that she was impressively fret over the silliest things. Lou missing his own birthday party-- and her birthday party-- seemed like a recipe for a temper tantrum.
And of course, Lou was her son. Adelaide was frivolous but she had a warm heart. As his mother, wouldn't she want to come and dote on him anyway?
Hades frowned deeper, still lingering on the edge of Lou's bed. He didn't know what to do.
He wanted to go fetch Belle. She would know.
"Are you sure you can't make a short appearance?" he asked. "Or at least call your mother."

This conversation had gone beyond smooth. Though that was why they had identified Julieta Madrigal in the first place. She was no child. She had worked at Chapter Three long enough now to understand the business and be able to anticipate its needs. Hades personally felt no need to linger over the conversation if Julieta had no other questions.
There would be questions moving forward. But in this moment?
"No, not at all. But Belle and myself extend our thanks," said Hades and he flashed a smile, rare for him, but he did appreciate Julieta. "This is an important step for the both of us but we have every confidence you will treat Chapter Three as she should be. Please-- if you ever have questions or want to talk about everything, feel free to ask either of us."

Hades frown deepened, feeling like a wound on his own face.
Even as he'd asked the question, he had suspected the answer, but not wanted to acknowledge it. Even now, as Lou mumbled that he was 'coming down with something,' the name of that something loomed like a dangerous thundercloud in his room.
Hades did not know what to do. He didn't want his suspicion to be true.
And so it was out of his own stubbornness that he swept forward and sat on the bed. He pulled the covers down forcefully, which made Lou shift and turn his face toward him, probably to scowl.
Hades ignored the reaction. He pressed the back of his hand to Lou's forehead instead, that frown still playing across his own lips as he did.
"You don't have a fever," he murmured. His hand shifted as he cupped Lou's face gently, his eyes entreating Lou to...get up. And be okay.
He didn't know what else to do if he wasn't.
"Your mother will be disappointed if you don't come."

Hades was not here to micromanage.
It was not his style. If he was still a manager here, then, well, maybe. He could be highly scrutinizing when he wanted to and when he'd first taken over Chapter Three, that was precisely how he was. He'd rearranged shelves and implemented procedure and delighted in being very very micromanagey.
But that was the past, eh? He was the mayor now. He couldn't fill his brain with the details of Chapter Three when he needed to address other matters. What time he wasn't given to his job, he was saving for his family. Chapter Three sat outside those things.
"I think a simple email alerting us to events or things you want to change-- we'll likely approve almost everything, we would just like to be kept in the know," mentioned Hades. "We both trust you after all. That's why we're promoting you and not someone else."

A nap.
Lou had been taking more naps recently, now that Hades thought about it. He should have noticed before. Or, rather-- that was not entirely accurate. He had noticed, but his only thought was to be envious that Lou got to lay down when Hades was trapped in meetings and flooded with emails and saw very little end in sight when it came to the Crown drama. He'd let his own business consume him and so Lou taking a nap here and there wasn't a problem.
But it was a problem, if the nap took place on the day of Lou and his mother's joint birthday party.
"We are celebrating you," Hades said, incredulously. "We can't have a party about you if you aren't there. I-- are you feeling sick?"

Hades and Belle would like Julieta to run the shoppe, yes, but--
Did Julieta want to? That was the most important piece. Hades watched the woman's face carefully for any sign of reluctance. But Julieta Madrigal didn't even act surprised, which was surprising in itself, eh? But in a good way. Slowly Hades smiled as Julieta began to list off all kinds of different duties she could throw herself into. She was not intimidated by the responsibility. She appeared confident-- perhaps even excited.
Which meant that Hades was confident too, in their choice. He had to feel that way to turn Chapter Three over. Even if this business was something he had stumbled into, he'd grown to love it over the years. It was an important part of the fabric of Swynlake.
"Precisely," confirmed Hades. "Most of the things you have to do you already know how to do-- it's just taking initiative now, and being a leader. But I can provide any training for things you might be uncertain of. But I think for the most part you already have the skills you need."

Even as Hades climbed the stairs, he sensed something was wrong.
Call it his sixth sense, that part of his magic eternally connected to the other worlds. Or call it pure logic. Because with each creaking stair, the prospect of Lou whinging over two ties or two different coats made little sense. They'd decided their outfits a week ago. Lou always decided their outfits, after all. So they would match.
So Hades should be prepared for what greeted his knock at the door. But he wasn't.
I'm not going.
Hades stared at the door, like he had misheard. "What?" he uttered-- loud enough for Lou to hear. But then decided, fuck it--
He barged into the room and his eyes widened further. "Why are you in bed?! What's wrong?"

Hades's concerns about the business were actually quite more big picture.
Because yes, there were little tasks here and there-- such as ordering the books, or logging them within the system-- that were experiencing... shall we call it a lag? They got done in a timely enough manner. These processes could be more efficient, but Chapter Three teemed with books; there was no danger of an empty shelf.
But when it came to coming up with promotions, or planning events-- that kind of thing. Hades had no time to think about Chapter Three in a more strategic way, nor could he train and interview staff properly.
Those things needed a manager. A dedicated manager.
"No, no. I'm merely aware that it's not living up to its full potential," said Hades. "And Belle and I both want it to. Despite not having time to be here as often as we both used to be, it's an important business to us. We want Chapter Three to succeed. For that to happen though, it needs-- real leadership." He raised his eyebrows at her. "And we were thinking, you."

It was time for the annual joint birthday party between Adelaide Bonfamille and Lou Bonfamille. Joy of joys eh?
Well, it wasn't that bad. Truthfully, Hades quite liked a well-planned party and Adelaide knew how to throw one. There was always excellent food and wonderful decor. This year's would take place in the garden of Bonfamille Manor and the entire family would be attending, which meant wrestling the boys into tailor-made little suits. Aiden preened the entire time, but Bellamy threw a fit, and only let Hades comb down his hair when he promised his son they'd let him pick out a brand new book from Chapter Three on the way back.
Opal, naturally, loved the entire process of getting ready, and had finished first. So that meant she was getting fidgety now that they were waiting for...
"Where the hell is he?" Hades mumbled low. He glanced at Belle and said, "I'll go check on Lou. Maybe he can't decide between ties or somethin', eh?"
Hades climbed up the stairs to Lou's room and knocked. "Oi? You ready? It's nearly time to go."

Of course he'd use a bloody formal title, eh? Mrs. Madrigal was a proper two decades older than him, a respectable kitchen witch. Maybe Hades had been raised by ghosts, but he wasn't disrespectful.
And his employees were not his friends. They were, simply, his employees.
But he returned her smile. "It won't take too long. See-- I'm sure it's obvious, eh, that Belle and I haven't been able to come around Chapter Three as often as we used to. The store's been falling by the wayside these days, hasn't it?"
