John Singer Sargent: fall & revival
A friend from grad school recently posted about his visit to the “Fashioned by Sargent” exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. It led me to look up a few volumes on my bookshelves. Thế kỷ thứ 19 rất được học đường các môn văn và sử học tại Mỹ chú ý. Lý do là thế kỷ đó có rất nhiều biến chuyển to lớn trong tư tưởng cũng như lịch sử phương Tây. Vì nhiều biến chuyển này vẫn còn ảnh hưởng đến thời nay, nên hàn lâm Hoa Kỳ vẫn nghiên cứu và giảng dậy nhiều lớp về châu Âu trong thời kỳ này, hoặc ảnh hưởng châu Âu đến nơi khác, hay phản ứng từ nơi khác đến châu Âu.

This student had done an art recreation of Julius Caesar for Great Books I during Fall 2021. This semester, she recreated this painting of a late-medieval woman, which is reproduced on the cover of a Penguin Classics edition of Revelations of Divine Love (Elizabeth Spearing, trans.)

Course evaluations on small groups & office hours
Thus far I’ve taught six classes (four preps) fully online: two over last summer and four over the fall semester. Because creating community in the classroom is central to my teaching philosophy, the following student comment was the most pleasing among the evals of six courses: “Even over Zoom he is able to create a community-feel in our Great Books class.”
