Hanok
Today’s post is on a traditional Korean house you may have seen before! These houses are called 한옥 (pronounced han-ok). Depending on where the house was built, as well as the inhabitants status on the hierarchy and wealth are factors that can change how the hanok looks and was built. Richer aristocrats (양반, yang-ban) had their houses built with wood, whilst most average citizens had their house built with straw roofs instead of roof tiles. I will make a post on the straw roof houses (초가집) later on! :)
The tiled roof hanoks were built from wood and tiles on the roofs. Richer aristocrats would apply a special dye to the roofs to make them a shade of aqua blue. The walls were built with wood and rock and a mix of mud and straw was applied to keep the house more insulated and to prevent rain from coming into the house. The doors were a rectangular lattice which had paper on the inside side of the door. Probably one of the most significant features of traditional Korean houses are the heated floors! These were installed in houses of only the richest, as it was really expensive!
Here’s how the heated floors worked: The rooms would be situated around the kitchen. The kitchen had one fire where they would cook on. The heat was carried through underneath the rooms and would consequently heat up the floor! The more modern version of these houses use pipes underneath the rooms to make the heating even more efficient.
Although k-dramas make these house look SO fancy, the truth is, the rooms were around 6m squared, or for you non-metric people, 71 square feet. This is because Korean architecture didn’t use bricks due to their unavailability which made the houses really small!

We Have An Official Discord + Looking For Mods & Teachers!
안녕하세요! Hello Hello! It’s Mod Lee here and I have some information for anyone interested so stay tuned!
Part 1: An Official Discord Server!
That’s right! So this is to have a community in which to teach, learn, and motivate a bit more personally than we could for the blog. We’ll cover everything we do on the blog, but more in depth and conversing on different topics! We even offer help and motivation for school too if you need it. If you’re interested, the link is right below! Just be sure to read our rules and do your introduction once you enter! If the link doesn’t enter for you, feel free to send in an ask and we’ll help you out!
https://discord.gg/fxcDwYX
Part 2: Looking For Mods!
Are you interested in Korean language, culture, beauty, music, etc? Would you like to help motivate and teach people who are? Apply to become a mod today! As of now (April 7th, 2019) there is 1 mod, Mod Lee (that’s me!), who’s trying to run the show. I’m in hopes of finding 4 mods to help out, whether blog only, discord only, or able to do both! All genders, sexualities, ages, races, etc welcome! To apply, please submit the following information either through submissions, askbox, or a pm through my discord (if you join through the link) and I will respond as quickly as I am able.
-Name (real or mod name)
-Age (if you prefer you can be general and give an age range or say minor or 18+)
-Gender/Pronouns
-Any topics you know much about that would help the school? This includes Korean history, culture, music, art, language, etc. However, things such as diet/nutrition, general academics, etc are also welcome! (It’s okay if you don’t and you’re learning! We’re all here to learn)
-What would you be able to mod? (Blog, Discord, or Both?)
I look forward to finding new mods! Currently things are still settling so please bear with me as I fix and finalize things.
Part 3: Looking For Teachers!
If you’re looking to help run the school but are unable or have no desire to mod, how about becoming a teacher? Teachers can submit posts & resources to the school and/or run courses in the discord! Applications run the same: Submit through submissions or the askbox here on tumblr or message through discord when you join the school! The application information is relatively the same:
-Name (real or mod name)
-Age (if you prefer you can be general and give an age range or say minor or 18+)
-Gender/Pronouns
-Any topics you know much about that would help the school? This includes Korean history, culture, music, art, language, etc. However, things such as diet/nutrition, general academics, etc are also welcome! (It’s okay if you don’t and you’re learning! We’re all here to learn)
-How would you be able to teach? (Blog, Discord, or Both?)
As with finding new mods, I look forward to finding teachers as well!
Thank you for reading our school update and we look forward to seeing new students! Bye bye~
