@emerald-truth ok well I don’t have like. a super defined vision for this mostly I’m just Considering.… this is really like a. “wow wouldn’t it be crazy if…” situation… like, it all just comes down to their dynamics as they already are just multiply it by the fact that I handle estate docs as a day job. it’s kind of silly and embarrassing but here we are. also disclaimers I am not a legal expert in any way, I work in office admin. I am not 100% on technical details or realism for estate docs in the state of california in the 80s. & none of this is legal advice. so ok.

I just think it’s fun to consider, like, would laura name steele in her docs at any point during the show timeline??? on the one hand it makes a lot of sense!!! he lives nearby. he works with her. he is basically guaranteed to be there during a healthcare emergency especially. laura has very few close people in her life at all not to mention who live nearby or who could quickly arrive in the event of an emergency.

on the other hand laura is most afraid that steele will leave her high & dry so granting him this kind of legal authority would definitely freak her out. though you can revoke or change a doc like this at any time it would take time to get them drawn up again, to draw up the revocation… it’s a big step to name someone as your agent. like, ppl name their close relatives or their spouses for a reason. you really want to trust the person you’re giving this authority to, and laura always has a part of herself that does not fully trust steele. I think she would definitely consider it but I don’t know if she could at any point truly go through with it.

so I am really imagining this scenario where she is like….. who can I name as agent and/or healthcare proxy, well there’s steele, but also no I couldn’t possibly do that… this sort of. back and forth of her trust in him, like, knowing deep down yeah he IS the one she’d want making certain decisions on her behalf but she just can’t, execute that in writing…

the other fun part is like…. you can theoretically never tell your agent that you have named them as agent. this is super impractical but you CAN do it. so I mean then there’s this possibility that she just does it on a whim or like, she is telling herself the whole time I am doing this for PURELY practical reasons it just makes sense. and so she doesn’t tell him because that’s the step too far. & then you have this person.. whom you do not fully trust but you want to but you just can’t… & you’re together but also you’re not… & he might up and leave you at any time… & you break up but also not really since you were never together in the first place… & still all along this is the person you have legally granted the authority to make significant decisions on your behalf. like wow wouldn’t that be crazy. you see what I’m saying.

then there’s the possibility she would do it AND tell him. imagine someone who you KNOW hates giving up control has named you as their general agent and/or any kind of healthcare proxy and all the time you know they don’t entirely trust you and they constantly put distance between the two of you but you are still the one who will make decisions for them if they can’t do it themselves. like. wow what the FUCK.

also mildred sidebar — I do think she would be a great person to handle laura’s financial and business decisions, I think she would totally make mildred her general durable poa and/or also even her executor. but I dunno about any kind of healthcare proxy… 50/50 odds I’d say on whether she’d be super together and clear headed about it or whether she’d kinda freak. ok anyway that is all thank you for indulging this lol 🫡
