After a discussion on Discord I have thought I'd share all the useful tools that I - a copywriter and editor - use on a daily basis. These can be useful for fic writers, copywriters, novel writers... Basically anyone. :)

https://app.grammarly.com/ - for grammar checks, obviously https://quillbot.com/ - a great paraphrasing tool, especially when you want to change the style of a sentence, for example from casual to formal. Also has a bunch of other cool tools like summarizer. https://hemingwayapp.com/ - grammar checker, but also with suggestions what sentences are too hard to read, where to use an adverb, where to use passive voice etc. https://languagetool.org/ - grammar checker. Multiple languages. http://cliche.theinfo.org/ - a cliche finder, to not use the same words as everyone does https://www.onelook.com/thesaurus/ - THE reverse thesaurus, if you don't know the word, but can more or less define its meaning. Also has words organized by subject. https://www.learn-english-today.com/idioms/idioms_proverbs.html - lists of idioms and their meanings https://www.calmlywriter.com/online/ - distraction free writing https://visuwords.com/ - a super cool visual thesaurus and dictionary http://www.themostdangerouswritingapp.com/ - deletes all your text if you stop writing for 3 seconds. Look, if I introduced a WIP on here excitedly and then promptly never mentioned it again, it doesn’t mean I’m not working on it, it means I’m slowly rotating it in my mind like a rotisserie chicken and then went out to the grocery store to buy several other rotisserie chickens while I wait for it to cook and then slowly started rotating those rotisserie chickens and repeat

I wrote two along the lines of what OP wants

‘Sparks’ which is about Mako and Bolin going to the fire nation to find their mother’s family and it stirs up feelings. Mako not liking firebending that much is a mentioned background element (lol) to the story

And I haven’t finished it yet but it’s part of ‘Korra and Mako and the life-changing field trip’ and Mako’s issues with firebending are mentioned and set up in chapter 2 soooo. It’s a post-canon Mako and Korra friendship story.

I might be able to find others at some point but nothing really has jumped to my mind, especially if there are shippy fics with it. But I’ll try and have a look

are there any fanfics of mako struggling with the fact he's a firebender after his parents were killed by one?

like this week has ended up being a slightly terrible week to run it as my whole routine is messed up due a different cooking schedule as my parents aren't in so i know only have a few hours to work on fic a day and ahhh.
