(content warning for drugs, scarring, and needles!!!)
This is part one of THE SIGN OF THE FOUR...please bear with the angst, but Holmes and Watson are sooo bitchy to each other in the opening of this story and I wanted to dig into it.
(this is part of the Watson's sketchbook series)
EDIT since someone asked - these are all direct lines from the book except for the section that starts with "you will have work again" and ends with "I know there have been rumours", which is my little addition to explain certain things

James Lovegrove’s Sherlock Holmes books
James Lovegrove has written a ton of Sherlock Holmes books over the years (all Victorian era/canon era). I recently came across his latest series on the Hoopla app while I was browsing audiobooks that were available and the cover art totally roped me in. I ended up reading all three books in the newest series, all the Cthulu casebooks and a few in his earliest series. As far as I can tell, his books seem to be split into three different series based on the structure of the subtitles and the different cover art. I enjoyed all the books I read by Lovegrove for different reasons, but as I've already established in my other book rec posts, I mostly only care about the Holmes/Watson dynamic. So listed below are Lovegrove's Sherlock series in chronological order, which also happens to be, in my opinion, the order from least to best Holmes/Watson dynamics •ᴗ•
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Titan Books Series, 2013-2018
Tumblr media
I honestly just realized while researching links for this post that Lovegrove's books in this series are part of a bigger series with multiple authors (lol me), so I'm not going to list all the titles here, but they've been published from 2011-2023 and Lovegrove has written six of the 21 books. The other authors in the series are Guy Adams, George Mann, Cavan Scott, Mark A. Latham, Nick Kyme, Philip Purser-Hallard, and Tim Major. I read the first two Lovegrove books in this series last after reading his other SH series and the stories were pretty solid. One of them was a WWI-era story, which is a time period that I love to read about. The only thing I will say is that the Holmes/Watson vibe is a little too I'm-smarter-than-you-do-keep-up for my taste, which is why I took a break after reading the first two. But I wouldn't be against dipping back into this series at some point in the future and also checking out what the other authors have to offer.

The Cthulu Casebooks, 2016-2023
Tumblr media
There are four books in the Cthulu Casebooks series and the framing device is that James Lovegrove himself is a descendant of H.P. Lovecraft, which is how he comes into possession of Watson's secret writings on his and Sherlock's real adventures going up against Cthulu and other eldritch horrors. These books are not just a romp through a mashup of literary worlds, there are very real stakes and things get dark. I really liked these books, I'm not really a Lovecraft fan at all, but I have read some of his works and of course I'm aware of all the elements from his works that have transcended their stories and are really a part of general fantasy/horror fan knowledge. My best friend is a huge Lovecraft fan and we read these together, so they were able to tell me how precise the Lovecraftian elements were -- they were precise -- so Lovecraft fan approved. The framing device was my favorite thing, especially the author's note at the end of book three, which was a very bone-chilling way to end the book (that I was listening to on audio in my dark house at night -- oops).

James Lovegrove's Sherlock Holmes, 2019-2021
Tumblr media
This was my favorite series out of the Lovegrove set and also the first that I read. I felt like the Holmes/Watson dynamic was especially great -- and for me that means: they felt more like equals, there was just the right amount of bickering, and they cared deeply about each other. While I was reading these I took some short notes to help me remember what was special about each book, here they are below next to the titles. I would say that the covers and titles make the series seem like it might have fantasy elements, but it's more like they are debunking their clients outlandish theories before getting stuck in on the actual case.
Sherlock Holmes & the Christmas Demon (has a Three Garridebs-esque scene; Holmes dresses up as Santa!)
Sherlock Holmes & The Beast of the Stapletons (a continuation of HOUN complete with a short estrangement of Holmes & Watson)
Sherlock Holmes & The Three Winter Terrors (the dedication at the beginning of the book is to Jeremy Brett ❤)

Here’s my goodreads shelf with all kinds of Sherlock Holmes books that I’ve read or am hoping to read. Let me know if you have any recs! And check my pinned post for other book recs posts!

ACD writing A Study in Scarlet: Here's an idea, I've worked very hard on it and I'm very proud, do you like it? You don't? I'll fix it, let me fix it, I can make it better.
ACD writing The Sign of The Four: This is better, in fact, it's perfect. Cyclical structure and everything, check it out, Fleshed out characters, amazing storyline, I know you're going to like this one.
ACD writing anything Holmes related afterwards: Here, take this. I thought of it in the bathroom and wrote it on a piece of toilet paper. I don't care what you do with it just take it, now, I hope it's shit so you stop asking for it. Is there a deeper meaning? Stop asking me questions. Anyway, have you heard of Professor Challenger?

There’s something about Jeremy Brett’s Holmes that’s just so dear to my heart, so I’m going to start a journey to try to learn how to draw him more accurately, since i’ve struggled with capturing his likeness in the past.

So lets say we do Hound of the Baskervilles, but we do it a little differently.
We could try opening it with John getting off a train. He’s alone.  Its been so long since he’s left london, nearly four years. Maybe we don’t know if this is before or after the hiatus. We don’t know if Holmes is alive or dead. And john is out on a haunted moore Alone.
Maybe Henry Baskerville is handsome and funny. He doesn't like being told what to do, especially by john. Maybe he drinks too much. This man is just like his brother, maybe just the way Henry Watson was before John left for university, when there was still hope that he could change. Now John has to protect this man who is just like his brother. He’ll get it right this time he’ll keep him alive.
Then there’s a woman, who is very kind and very lonely and she’s very brave. She’s so unlike Mary. Mary would never have married a man like Stapleton. Something about her eyes though, its enough to conjure another ghost to this haunted place.
And all the while John is writing. He’s writing because that’s what he does best. That and taking care of people. He doesn't think about the fact that the last time Holmes relied on him he let him down. Doesn't think about the fact that for a while now when someone’s life has been in his hands he has lost them. Henry, Mary, Holmes.
If Holmes was here, would he laugh at John for thinking the moore is haunted? Maybe. But he himself returned from death. So perhaps it would be too far-fetched that in the howl of the hound John can hear the thunder of an Alpine waterfall, and the beast's eyes look too much like a clever, evil, dead man.

Not to gush but I feel like this is one of the best actings in the whole show. Even if you ignore the way that he pulls the robe around him (which is a reminder of the way Brett crafted a clear realtionship between Holmes, clothing and comfort), his EYES in this clip communicate such a subtle fear. On first watch you don't really notice it but after a few watches it's really there.
We see one of the very rare moments where Holmes is afraid, in the Granada Holmes episode The Final Problem. And it is in the presence of Professor Moriarty.
He shields himself with his robe and is clearly shaken, judging by his breathing. But there's also a look of anger and disgust when he clenches his teeth for just a moment.
Then he begins to speak. His voice falters at "You..." and there are odd pauses between "You... have... paid me", as though he's attempting to gather his courage again to say one last thing to Moriarty before he walks out the door.
Not to mention that Moriarty could kill him at any time, there being a deadly weapon concealed as a cane right there in Moriarty's hand which he had literally cocked and aimed directly at Holmes moments prior to this clip.
Holmes isn't afraid of death, but Moriarty has such a sense of menace about him that it's no surprise that Holmes is scared. In this episode, Mrs. Hudson even compares Moriarty to the 'devil himself'.
However, Holmes still has the suaveness to insult Moriarty by not even calling him by the correct title. Moriarty is a professor, but Holmes refers to him as simply "Mr. Moriarty". While we call our professors 'Mr.' nowadays, it was actually a sign of scholarly prestige in those times. So it's safe to say that Holmes doesn't stay stunned for very long.

THE VALLEY OF FEAR part one tbh there are so many iconic lines in this one (“you are scintillating this morning, Watson”) (“One more coruscation, my dear Watson - yet another brain-wave!”) it’s obnoxious
