Candle magic for Beginners
Candle burning is an ancient spiritual practice that has evolved into a complex magical art and science without losing its simplicity and capacity for creating powerful change. To practice successful candle magic, you must understand the principles behind this application.
They are:
Candle Color, Size and Shape, Candle Flipping, Marking and Dressing, Measuring, Charging, Lighting and Extinguishing.
Color Correspondences:
Color has a profound effect on human behavior, feelings, and emotional outlook.
The color of the candle should always, if possible, match your goal. People’s perception of, and reaction to, colors can be highly individual experience, therefore, the list below should act only as a guide and not a definitive source. When in doubt, trust your intuition.
White: Protection, healing, cleansing, blessing, all purpose.
Yellow: Creativity, communication, compelling.
Pink: Romance, friendship, happiness.
Orange: Employment, activation, stimulation.
Red: Health, passion, lust, strength, love.
Purple: Power, success, independence, spirits.
Brown: Friendship, law, stability, order.
Blue: Truth, justice, mental health, wisdom, wishes.
Green: Abundance, physical health, luck, prosperity
Black: Banishing, binding, protection, cursing.
Size and Shape:
Candles come in an array of shapes and sizes. Votive candles are smaller, burn quicker and hotter. Often used for spells where fast results are needed. Burn around taper, vigils, or honey jar to speed up results.
Most, in not all, candle spells, are worked using tapers. These candles can range anywhere from 4 to 12 inches or longer and come in every color of the rainbow. The thickness of household tapers will also vary.
Vigil candles are encased in glass. Can burn anywhere from seven to nine days. Pillar candles are similar to Vigil Candles, however they are not encased in glass. Pillar candles can be used as an alternate to Vigil Lights. May be marked with a wish, dressed with oil, placed on an overturned saucer, under which a written petition may be placed. For long term goals, a pillar candle can be prepared in this manner on the day that corresponds to your goal. The candle is then burned on the same day of the week every week until your goal is manifest. If your candle is spent and your goal has yet to manifest, prepare a new one, lighting it from the flame of the old one, before it is spent.
Candle Flipping:
Candle Flipping is a very old practice, which some say originated with the Gypsies, who were said to burn candles ‘upside down’ to ensure they would not be (justly or unjustly) incarcerated.
To flip a candle means to cut off a portion of a candle where the exposed wick is, called the head; and then cut away the wax on the opposite end, called the foot, to expose the wick on that end. As a general rule, candles prepared to pull things towards you are burned upright, those designed to move things away from you are flipped and burned upside down. Also called Butting.
Marking and Dressing:
To mark a candle means to inscribe something in its wax. Candles are marked with two pieces of information, they are:
Who the candle spell is to affect.
The goal of the spell.
The name of the individual can be written native language or in a magical alphabet. Your goal may be written in the form of a keyword or phrase, or a magic symbol such as a Rune, Astrological Sign, or even a magical symbol of your own making (sigil). In either case, the candle is marked vertically from the top of the candle to the bottom, with the name of the individual on its ‘face’ and the goal on the reverse.
Dressing a candle refers to the act of anointing the candle with oil. Candles are anointed with oil to spiritually cleanse them and seal the magic inside until releasing it through the act of burning the candle. Candles are anointed in two ways, either to draw things towards yourself, or drive them away.
To anoint a candle, hold its base against your abdomen (as if to insert it in your belly button). To draw something to you, dip your finger in the oil and stroke the candle from the tip to base three times and call the essence of your desire, using a keyword of phrase. To drive something away from you, anoint the candle from base to tip.
Herbs represent another aspect of dressing candles, which brings an added dimension to the process. After dressing the candle with oil, it may be rolled in a mixture or a combination of herbs. Herbs chosen for dressing the candle should match your goal.
Measuring:
In most spells, a candle will be allowed to burn until it burns all the way down and finally extinguishes itself. However, some spells require a candle to be burned in intervals at specific times. The method of dividing a candle to accommodate these intervals is called measuring.
Candles are measured in two main ways,. They are timing, and pinning. In timing, a candle is allowed to burn for a certain number of minutes per day over a certain number of days.
In pinning, a candle is divided into a certain number of sections by sticking a needle or pin through the candle. The candle is then burned at the same time every day for as many days as required until the needle drops, at which time it is then extinguished.
In the case of a candle that is measured with needles or pins to burn for x number of days the candle is divided into. Final pin going through the wick.
If a written petition has been placed under the candle, the pins will be placed in the petition until the spell is complete and then ritually disposed. If not petition has been written, the pins will either be saved for re-use or ritually disposed of with any left over wax.
Charging:
Now that your candle is prepared, it must then be charged. To ‘charge’ a candle means to fill it with energy, much like charging a battery. Charging a candle fills it with power that it will release into the universe as it burns in order to accomplish your goal.
To charge your candle, hold your hands over it and form a triangle with your forefinger and thumbs. Position the candle in the center of your triangle. Visualize that which you desire as your make your prayer or petition. When you are done, gently tap the candle on the table three times to signal that your intention is sealed.
Lighting and Extinguishing:
Many individuals light their candles with ordinary matches, while others feel that the sulfur with which matches are tipped, disturb the nature of the work. These people light a small candle in another room, which they use to light their spell candles with, at the appropriate time. The effectiveness of your candle spell will be greatly enhanced by focused intent and chanting during its preparation and burning, as will having a clear vision of your goal.
Extinguishing candles is another issue where magical practitioners are divided. Methods of extinguishing candle include:
Pinching out the flame, but some say you pinch out your wish.
Blowing out the flame, but some say you blow away your wish.
Snuffing out the flame, but some say you snuff out your wish.
Just like lighting your candles, you will either have to experiment or trust your instincts when choosing how to extinguish your candles. Whichever methods you choose, it is important that you remain consistent.
Various Types of Candles:
This section will cover some of the various types of candles and how they are used. Candles divide into two categories. They are: Specialty Candles & Figure Candles
Specialty Candles:
Specialty candles differ from other types of candles mentioned in that they meet one or more of the following conditions.
1. They come in a size different from votive, taper, or pillar candles.
2. They consist of one candle molded in two or more colors of wax.
Examples of specialty candles include Jumbo Candles, Double Action Candles and Reversing Candles.
Jumbo Candles are nine inches long and come in either a single color, two colors, or sometimes three colors. Due to their size and width they are usually used in seven-day type spells. They are used just like regular candles as described above.
Double Action Candles are candles which have been made from two different colors of wax. They are usually red, white, or green on their top half and black on their bottom half. They are believed to simultaneously reverse negativity while drawing in positive influences as represented by the color of candle used. In addition to carving names on these candles and anointing them with oils, they are usually ‘flipped’ by cutting off the wick turning it upside down and digging a new wick out of what was the bottom. In this way the evil as represented by the black portion of the candle burns away so that the good as represented by the other color can draw in the positive influences.
Reversing Candles are jumbo candles which consist of a red candle covered with a layer of black wax and are used to reverse negativity back to its source. They are often employed in the same manner as double-action candles by flipping the candle, marking it with the enemy’s name (usually backwards), anointing it with a condition oil and burning it on a mirror. As the candle burns the red wax will overcome the black wax and run down the candle symbolically overcoming the evil.
Figure Candles:
Figure candles are candles which have been created in various forms and which represent certain conditions, ideas, or people. They come in a wide variety of choices and colors from which a practitioner can choose when deciding to perform spells. Examples of Figure Candles include, Human Figure Candles, Cat Candles, Cross Candles, Genital Candles, and Skull Candles to name a few.
Figure candles add an extra dimension to candle-burning due to the sympathetic qualities their specific shape provides. In and of themselves, figure-candles are no more powerful than regular candles. However, some practitioners may find that they react more strongly to the visual/tactile aspects of the candle which allows them to be more successful in their endeavors.
Some Types of Figure Candles and their Use(s):
Human Figure Candles:
These are candles which have been molded in the shape of a naked Man (Adam Candle) and a naked woman (Eve Candle). Human Figure Candles are often used to represent a specific person. They come in various colors including black, white, green, and red. Just as in general candle-burning practices, the color of the candle should be in harmony with the goal of your spell. Typically, the name of the person the candle is intended to represent is scratched across the chest of the doll. The individual’s personal concerns, when available, are ‘loaded’ into the base of the candle. Once prepared the candle may be burned, either alone or with other candles. In some cases it may be manipulated as part of a “moving candle spell”, that is it may be moved towards/away from another candle(s) or object to symbolize movement on the issue or problem with the ultimate goal to bring about a certain condition. A good example of one such spell is placing two prepared Red Human Figure candles on an altar facing towards one another about a foot apart with a red taper in the center. Each day the candles are lit and move closer together in order to bring the two people together. In some cases, the Human Figure candle isn’t burned at all. Many practitioners often prepare the candle as described above and then use it in the same manner as a doll-baby.
Skull Candles:
Skull Candles are shaped like the human skull and come in black, green, red and white. Because they are associated with the human head/mind they are used to penetrate another’s thoughts. However, due to many people associating skeletons with sickness and death, some practitioners use these candles to bring health to the sick or to curse their enemies with sickness unto death.
Cross Candles:
Alternately called Cross of Calvary Candles or the Floral Cross, these candles are shaped like the Holy Cross and are further embossed with a set of crossed-keys and an open bible. Cross candles come in an array of colors whose use follow the same line of color symbolism in practical candle-burning spells. However, due to their association with Christianity, they are often used in conjunction with praying the Psalms for specific goals. I have also seen them used in workings to open or close doors (physical or spiritual).
Lovers Candle:
These are candles which resemble a nude heterosexual couple embracing and are used to enhance the romantic/sexual aspects of one’s relationship.
Cat Candle:
A candle molded in the shape of a cat sitting on its hind legs. These candles come in red, green and black. Due to the cat’s perceived ability to always land on its feet, to slip in and out of placed undetected, and longevity cat candles are used to draw in good luck. The type of luck desired is often represented by the color of candle chosen and the petition placed under the candle.
Genital Candle:
Candles which are representative of the Penis and Vagina. These candles are used to manipulate/enhance/control one’s sexual prowess and nature. Perhaps the most common use for these candles are to attract a new sexual partner, arouse passion, ensure sexual fidelity, and curse another individual’s sexuality.
Pyramid Candle:
A large candle molded in green wax in the shape of a Pyramid with an eye in its center. This candle is a three-dimensional representation of the pyramid found on United States Currency and is associated with the wealth of Egypt. It is thought to quickly draw money and prosperity to the individual when properly prepared and burned with sincere prayer.
Mummy Candles:
These candles are shaped like an Egyptian Mummy and come in either black or red wax. Due to the binding nature of the mummy, they are often used to bind enemies or keep them down. However, they are also used to lift cross conditions and empower the individual.
Praying Hands:
Candles which resemble hands brought together in prayer. Praying Hands candles are available only in white and are used when praying for the sick or injured.
Witch Candle:
These are candles molded in the likeness of a stereotypical witch complete with conical-hat and broom. They draw upon the belief that witches are naturally attuned to magic and can command powerful forces. They are typically available in either black or red wax and are used to cast hexes (black) or bring about love (red). I have also seen these candles used by magical practitioners against other magical practitioners for both good and ill.
Devil Candle:
Candles molded in the likeness of a devil, they come in red, green, and black wax. This devil is not the Satan of Christianity but rather an amalgam of Pagan/African/Christianity deities into a powerful ally in magic. Depending on the color, these candles are used to incite passion in another, bring in money, or hex your enemy.
7 Knob Candle:
These are candles which have been created to have seven knobs and come in white, red, green and black. Their color symbolism follows the same general concepts as found in practical candle burning spells. Seven Knob candles are used to bring about one’s wishes by carving one’s wish on each of the seven knobs, anointing each know with oil, and then burning one knob per day for a total of seven days.
About Signs:
Not all magical traditions give credence to the manner in which a candle burns or seeks to divine the success or failure of a spell by observing patterns left in wax residue. Some of the topics that will be addressed include:
The Behavior of the Candle Flame, Signs Left by Vigil Lights, Symbols in Left Over Wax, Things to Keep in Mind:
The Behavior of the Candle Flame:
Your candles are speaking to you each time you light them to attract or dispel certain influences. Granted they may not speak in a voice that you can hear with your ears (although it has been known to occur) but rather with the movement of the flame. Some of the signs through which a candle may be trying to communicate with you are given below.
These signs presuppose that you have already ruled out any mundane factors which may give the appearance of a positive or negative sign, such as a candle which has been left in a draft, an improperly made candle, too much oil used, etc., and have made the necessary corrections.
Weak or Low Flame:
This is a sign that you have not accumulated sufficient power to accomplish your desired goal or that another is working against you. Watch the flame to see if it grows stronger as it burns, if not, this means that your desire may not manifest and if it does it will take a long time. When this occurs you should re-evaluate your goal or continue burning candles until you see improvement.
Strong or High Flame:
A strong flame indicated a great amount of power or energy is being spent to achieve your goal. A flame which burns abnormally high is indicative that God has heard your petition and this is generally taken as a sign that your work will succeed.
Flame Goes Out:
A candle that will not burn or whose flame goes out is trying to tell you that there are strong energies working against you. When this occurs you have three choices. They are 1) Dispose of this candle and start over with another. 2) Re-light the candle and refortify it with fervent prayer. or 3) Dispose of the candle and re-evaluate your goal.
Flame Relights Itself:
A candle whose flame appears to become extinguished and which then begins burning again is a sign that there are energies opposing your work but that your candle is fighting back to keep working for you.
Flaring Flame:
When the flame flares up and down this is a sign of opposition and that you are in an active struggle with the subject of your spell. It could be that someone is working against you or that someone is working for the same goal as you (i.e. casting spells for the same promotion, lover, etc…) Pay attention to how the candle continues to burn for additional signs.
Crackling Flame: A candle which naps, crackles, or pops  is generally believed to be a sign of the language of spirits (ancestors, angels, etc…). It is believed that the spirits are either talking to you or to each other.
Fast Burn: A candle which burns down quickly and leaves little to no residue is given as a sign that the work will be successful but that perhaps the results will not be lasting.
Slow Burn: A candle which burns down slowly, or slower than other candles of the same type previously burned is given to indicate that 1) the goal of the spell will take some time but that the results will last or 2) there is resistance to your spell.
Signs Left By Vigil Lights:
Unlike free standing candles, Vigil Lights are candles which are encased in glass and which are designed to burn anywhere from 7 to 9 days. Due to the fact that they are encased in glass, many auguries have been ascribed to condition of the glass as a result of burning a Vigil Light. Some of these signs include:
Clean Burn:
It is given as a good sign that what you wish for will come to pass with little to no resistance if a Vigil Light burns without leaving behind any wax residue or marks on the glass.
Soot on Top:
If the top portion of a Vigil Light is blackened from soot, but otherwise clean as it burns down, this is given as a sign that your spell got off to a bad start (i.e. it initially faced some negativity or opposition) but that it worked past those negative energy and worked well for you.
Soot on Bottom:
If a Vigil Light burns clean in the beginning but later leaves a black soot on the bottom portion of your candle, this is a sign that your spell got off to a good start but ran into opposition before completing its work for you. When this occurs you should back up the work by lighting another candle and continuing to do so until you get a candle that burns clean.
Soot All Over:
A Vigil Light that burns completely black is a definite sign that a strong enemy is working against you.
Cracked Glass/Explodes:
As in the case with many of the signs mentioned, the signs given for a Vigil Light that cracks or explodes largely depends on the the goal of the spell. Generally speaking a cracked/exploding Vigil Light can indicate 1) Breaking through an obstacle such as another person’s defenses 2) Breaking a spell such as a hex that was placed on you or 3) Your candle broke because it took a ‘hit’ for you or 4) The person is actively working against you and broke your spell before it could have an affect on him or her.
Symbols Left in Residual Wax:
Sometimes a candle will melt down and drip wax in puddles as it burns. These puddles are often searched for signs and symbols which will give an indication of the success or failure of the work. Some common symbols include Hearts, Faces, Tears, Eyes, Circles, Genitals, Some individuals have attempted to assign specific meanings to commonly occurring symbols which have often found in these drippings.
Ceromancy sensu stricto – or divination by candle wax.
Ceromancy sensu lato – or divination by ( melted ) wax and water.
Ceromancy sensu stricto:
It’s brilliantly pragmatic, and a handy tool to monitor the success of Your candle magic spells, and thus, accordingly, influence or “fix” them, as You are performing them.
Of course, a rootworker will  also observe the smoke behavior, flame movements, even other things such as glass cracking, in the case of glass encased candles, or label scorching or burning,  also sounds that candles may produce, appearance or sparkles etc.
We shall focus on the ceromancy part here, since this is an post about ceromancy. And in this case we observe:
The speed by which candle burns.  Essentially,  if the candle burns fast it’s ominous of a good outcome, desired outcome,  and if it burns slow, it indicates that there are some forces or obstacles opposing to, or slowing down the work. Finally a candle that goes away way too fast ( let’s say in half of the time assessed by manufacturer) foretells success, but most often a very short-lived or temporary one.
The “efficiency” of candle burning. Meaning if the candle lumps, goes out frequently, makes a lot of cascade drip-lines from sides, burns slowly, it’s sending a message that something is  defying the influence of the spell or countering it, also slowing it down. In such case some people light new candles,  yet other “remedy” the candle (relight, trim the wick, add some condition oil or even some cologne used in spiritual work, etc.), and thus also affect the outcome of the spell.
The Shapes the wax forms.  If the wax drips a lot, and forms hanging pillars, “waterfalls”, “frozen drops”, cascade flows , it’s usually taken as a sign that the success will come, but with a lot of effort and tears possibly, preceding it, and more so if these remain after the candle has burnt down. These wax formations are often seen as transitive, because they rarely remain after the candle has burnt all the way down, naturally. The other kind are the “permanent” wax shapes , that had formed in residual wax, remaining after the candle has naturally extinguished itself.
It should be clear that this “universal” doctrine of signatures symbolism will vary depending on the type of candle used and therefore also, the purpose of the candle magic ritual.
For example, let’s say we are using a spell to influence two people, who are, or should  be romantically involved, and we are using  figural candles for the spell. The wax melts, and connects them firmly at their basis.
This is a good omen, If it was some kind of reunion, or marriage, or other kind or love or friendship spell. But If we were actually trying to do a separation spell, this would indicate that the two people will fight and overcome the spell, and remain together. Likewise, If one is doing some kind of marriage spell, or fidelity spell with the bride and groom figural candle, and one party (bride or groom) drips intensively over another, we can safely say that the given party is more eager on getting married and that it tries to “cling” onto  the other party.
If we are working with glass encased candles, and the glass breaks, spilling  wax,  it can either indicate bloodshed or tears of some kind, or it can mean blessing, for example If it was a money spell, and the wax “escaped” and became firm around the coins You’ve placed around the candle.
So, obviously, while some general doctrine of signatures symbolism applies here, we still must take in account the purpose of the candle used, as well as it’s nature, and sometimes even color.
And of course, any “omen” is really an omen, only when we  can exclude the possible physical causes. If You drench the candle in exaggerated amount of oil, it will burn down way too fast, If You have a draft in the room where  You are doing the  work, and the candle flickers…well it’s obviously not some of entities  who are causing this. Also an unstable candle, tilting or shaking,  will drip all over, from sides to the base. It means nothing other than that You need to fix it.
Therefore, “Ceromancy sensu stricto” is a bit more demanding, when it comes to analysis and interpretation than “Cereomancy sensu lato”  , which is though a bit more complicate to do , in the plain, physical sense of performing it.
Cermonacy sensu lato:
Ceromancy can also be achieved, for the sole purpose, of a broader spectrum divination, rather than being part of candle magic. In fact, today, in the occult community , this is one of the most popular methods of divination. It can be seen as a form of hydromancy, and scrying .
It’s as simple as melting some wax, and letting it drip into water, until the questioner intuitively (or otherwise) feels it has been enough. Touching the cold water surface, the melted wax, hardens, forming auspicious shape, which are henceforth analysed and interpreted just  like the tea patterns in tasseography (divination using the tea leaves) are. The symbolic meanings are the same.
So the very process is generally uniform, more so among the modern practitioners. Some may drip wax from candle directly, into a bowl with water, while others will melt wax in some vessel, using double boiler and then pour it into the water.
Some traditions require either brass vessel or a glass one specifically. In Turkey, ceremony is a communal ceremony, where two or more people hold the spread white clothe above the head of the questioner, and some other person holds a vessel (bowl) with water over the cloth and pours wax in it.
In Italy, they place the candles, in the bowl with water and allow them to drip, while in the bowl. This is usually achieved by tying the  two  candles together, as explained in the following example, by Judika Illes:
Ceromancy, an Italian method
1. “Place three Rose hips, three Nettle leaves, some Cumin seeds and a few springs of Rue, in a bowl or pan of icy water.
2. Bind two candles with scarlet ribbon.
3. Place those candles within a pan of water.
4. Light the candles and observe the wax dripping into the water.”
Author further suggests that the lucky shapes, should be preserved and  kept in  a red  charm bag like an amulet.
The shapes that form in water can be interpreted as If they were tea-leaves pattern . You can consult any tea leaves reading book, and here are some suggestions:

Things to Keep In Mind
This entry is not intended to cover every aspect of signs found in candle-burning, but rather to give a brief overview of the subject. Many of the signs given are subjective and largely dependent on the goal or intention of the spell. As you practice candle burning, observe your candles closely and take notes as to the behavior of the candle and how they burn. When your spell is complete, pay attention to what does or does not happen next and write this down as well. With practice over time you will begin to understand how your candles speak to you and what they are trying to tell you.
Tips:
A ring of salt keeps influence out when candles burn.
Tin foil can work in place of a mirror.
Disposal of Magical Remains:
Many people think that a spell is complete once the candle is spent, but this is not the case. A spell is not complete until  its magical remains (i.e. candle wax, petition, herbs, etc…) have been properly disposed of. This is especially true in the folk-magic tradition of Hoodoo where disposal of magical remains has a direct symbolical bearing on the work at hand.
Disposing of Candle Wax:
As stated earlier the intention of your spell often has a direct correlation on how you dispose of magical remains. Below you will find a general guide-line grouped by intention/goal to help you determine how best to dispose of magical leftovers.
To Attract Influences:
If the work was done to draw something to you such as prosperity, a new lover, or good health,  the remains are buried on your property, often near your front door or under your front doorstep.
To Keep and Maintain:
If the work was done to keep something with you indefinitely such as a straying lover, the remains are buried in your backyard.
To Move Away:
If the work was done to move something away from you such as a jinx, an enemy, or a negative condition, the remains would be buried off of your property. Choices for burial include 1) tossing in running water or 2) burying at a crossroads.
To Increase:
If the work was done to create or increase a condition such as prosperity or good health, bury or throw it toward the East so that its strengthen with the rising Sun.
To Decrease:
If the work was done to end or weaken a condition such as an enemy’s good luck, ill-health, etc.. bury or throw it towards the West so that it will diminish with the setting Sun.
Disposal of Used Vigil Lights:
Vigil Lights are typically 8 inch tall Pillar type candles which have been encased in glass. They usually burn anywhere from 7 to 9 days. When a Vigil Light is spent there is always the question of how to dispose of them. Your choices include:
Burying/Disposal:
Depending on the actual spell, some workers have been known to dispose of used vigil lights in the same manner as other magical remains.
Trash/Recycle:
Some workers have been know to simply toss them in the trash, while others choose to clean them out and place them in the recycle bin.
Reuse:
Again, some workers clean them out and reuse Vigil Lights around their home as storage for incense sticks, as vases, or filled with decorative items such as marbles.
Disposal of Written Petition:
Procedures for disposing of written petitions such as prayers, name paper, or petitions for specific goals often follow the same guidelines for disposal as other forms of magical remains. Typically, petitions are either 1) Burned or 2) Buried. However even with these two choices there are variations and choices to be made.
Burning:
If the candle was free-standing, the petition may be burned and its ashes mixed with any left-over wax to be disposed of in the manner described above on disposal of candle wax. If the candle was a vigil-light, the petition may be burned inside the glass and the ashes 1) Tossed out with the glass 2) Washed down the drain 3) Scattered to the Winds 4) Disposed of in the same manner as candle wax described above. Alternately, the petition can be burned along with incense or powdered herbs with prayer as an offering to deity.
Burying:
The petition can be wrapped up with left over candle wax, herbs, etc., and buried 1) near your front door to attract influences 2) in your backyard to maintain conditions 3) tossed in running water to move something away from you or 4) at a crossroads to disperse energy. If the petition was part of a working to hurt or jinx an enemy it can be burned and the ashes mixed with any left over wax, or any type of crossing herbs or powder and 1) buried in the individuals front yard 2) buried under their doorstep 3) hidden in a tree on their property (usually on the western side), 4) hidden in their car 5) buried where they are sure to step over it, etc...

Tools of Witchcraft
This is going to be a little more of an extensive list for a Witch's tools vs the 4 tools found in say Wicca, and these are only suggestions. Each Witch is different so each Witch may use certain tools over others. Again this is just a list of stuff to consider using in your practice. None of this is holy writ. Now as always, remember that the Witch is the magic and tools are not needed, but they do aid in focusing our Wills which is the source of all magical spells. Also the way to use some of these items is very extensive so I will not include them here too much. 1) Altar Some people put their altars on the floor. I prefer to sit on the floor with a low table in front of me. Some Witches just put down a cloth and set up their altars before each working. Again this list is only a suggestion of ideas for tools. You do not need them all. Ideas for altars- End tables Dresser tops Coffee table Shoe boxes Cinder blocks Large Stone tile Hope Chest Shelving 2) Altar cloths Let's face it, you're gonna spill wax or ash on your altar. To help protect the finish or your floors from wax, put down an altar cloth. I don't use anything fancy or expensive as I tend to ruin my cloths pretty fast. I'm clumsy. Ideas for altar cloths- Old sheets Blankets Bandanas Cloth by the yard Old clothes 3) Herbs Most Witches and Magicians use plant material in their spell work. Various herbs, spices, barks and roots have different harmonics or energy wavelengths that when combined with other items of similar energy and harmony, result in more powerful spells. Examples are loose incense, powders, teas, floor washes, ect. Common herbs found in a Witch's cabinet- Rosemary Cloves Lavender flowers Chamomile flowers Rose petals Cinnamon Frankincense Myrrh Salt Pepper Dragons blood Red pepper Sandalwood Juniper & Juniper berries Pine resin Cedar Ginger Copal Angelica root High John the Conqueror White sage Lemongrass 4) Minerals Along with herbs, stones, crystals and other things, minerals have energy which when combined with the Witch's Will and other harmonic items, add power to spell work. Common minerals found in a Witch's cabinet- Clear Quartz Citrine Amethyst Rose quartz Smoky quartz Moonstone Bloodstone Pyrite Selenite Golden Tiger's eye Blue Tiger's eye Red Tiger's eye Malachite Lapis Lazuli Lodestones Black Tourmaline 5) Candles Candles come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors. All of which can benefit your magic. For example a red figure candle can bring you love, and a green one can help you persuade your boss to give you a promotion. Try to avoid scented candles as scent is also a correspondence and should only be added by the Witch to keep the energy in harmony. Some scented candles do work well within spellwork. Just know the scent and what it means before using that scented candle :) There is also the idea of sy thetic products vs natural products but that's another article. Types of candles found in a Witch's cabinet (various colors)- Tea Lights Chime Pillar 7 day jar candles Votives Skulls Figures 7 knob Reverse Double action 6) Witch's blade I like to have a special knife I use when I harvest plant material from the wild or I need to cut something in ritual. In some traditions, Witches state the handle must be a certain color. If you follow those religions then adhere to those rules. The knife can be used, as I said, to harvest plants, plant material, cut thread/string, carve candles, stir brews, making wands, and marking other tools by scratching in a runic monogram. Some Witches don't use their blade for anything but energy work. Others use their blades for practical things like preparing a magical meal. However the knife should never just be used because all your other knives are dirty. It should be witchcraft related. Mine has a bone handle and two blades that fold down. Knife ideas- Folding knives Daggers Short swords Steak knives Butter knives 7) Censor Most Witches make their own incense in loose or shaped form. Having a safe place to burn things is a must. This can also be used to burn spell paper. Censor ideas- Ceramic bowl Ash tray Large seashell Caldron Tower or shaped pre made incense holders are available everywhere. Metal gets hot so be careful if yours is a metal bowl like mine. Just make sure it's heatproof. Censors should be filled with ash, sand, or salt to absorb heat. 8) Mortar and pestle I don't just use mine for grinding herbs into incense and other small particles for whatever reason. I also use it to grind taglocks (personal concerns) into powders and other spell work. I have also ground up paper and sprinkled it into the wind. There are many uses. When looking for a mortar and pestle try to find one that is made of solid stone like granite or marble. It should have a rough inside cut to the mortar and an equally rough pestle. Also look for a heavy base so it won't slide around and a deep bowl to keep materials from popping out while pounding them. Avoid soapstone as its usually smooth cut and is really soft. It's very poor material for a pestle. They are also tearing up India to manufacture soapstone products. Don't buy soapstone period. 9) Noise maker The use of music in ritual is as old as civilization itself. I love to incorporate some sort of sound in my rituals. Ideas- Rattles Drums Bells Gongs String of beads rubbed together Tambourines Whistles Flutes Recorders CD or MP3 players 10) Jars and containers I don't know what it is with Witches and empty jars/containers but most if not all of us go ape shit for them. I use glass jars to hold my herbs, oils, and washes like 4 thieves vinegar. I prefer glass as its non porous and doesn't absorb smells. But boxes drive witches batty too. Jar ideas- Canning jars Corked jars Wine bottles Hot sauces Spice/herb jars Starbucks bottles Baby food containers Bouillon jars Vinegar bottles Salad Dressing jars Shoe boxes Carved wooden boxes Eye glass cases (think coffin) Chests Trunks Plastic storage containers Zip lock bags 11) Divination tools The arts of Divination are multiple and it's impossible to include them all here, but there are some common items you may wish to work with on your path. Divination tool ideas- Tarot decks Black Mirror/Mirrors Black Bowls Crystal Balls Pendulums Rune sets 12) Miscellaneous Other items that may be found in a Witch's cabinet- Animal parts (hair, feet, teeth, ect) Felt (various colors) Drawstring bags Needles Thread (various colors) Glue Tape Scissors Construction paper Parchment paper Offering bowls and plates Markers Colored pencils Lighters Matches Flash paper Chalice/cup Hourglass Pentacle plate (I know, why is a pentacle on the witchcrafting tool list? The truth is the pentacle while being associated with Wicca today actually originates back to the Greeks and the planet Venus. It's also come to represent the 5 elements which most Witches work heavily with. So it's OK to have a pentacle if you want to use it) Focal point of some sort (can be a statue of a personal animal guide such as a wolf or candles or even an offertory plate for spirits or Fae or whatever, even the pentacle). As always I am open to any questions, comments or constructive criticism you may have about the content covered in this post. Big shout out to those that helped me, Ben, Dusty Coyote, and Ebenezer. You guys rock.

How to Spellcraft
Many 101 witchy books say that writing your own spells is advanced witchcraft. Why? Because at this point you understand the mysteries of Magical energy. How to create it, harness it, mold it to your will to cause the desired change. You know the mysteries of life, death, healing and destruction. After all a Witch cannot heal unless they can destroy. With this knowledge of these mysteries you can now begin to form the world around you to your will, whatever that be. Often you will hear that following a spell is like following a recipe or formula. There are steps one takes to make sure their spell is successful. Just like incorporating all the dry mix before adding the milk in busicut making so too is it key to know the steps one goes through when constructing successful spells or adapting existing spells to suit your needs. So what are these steps? (Before you start your spellwork) 1) Examine your religious beliefs. If say you work with Hecate Queen of Witches you might want to include her in your opening rites/rituals. You would also look at any religious guidelines such as the Wiccan 'Harm none' or any spell structure that must be adhered to like casting circle. 2) Examine what sort of magic resonates with you. This is the mystery of the self. To know oneself totally. For me its fire magic. For another it could be knot magic, sympathetic, ceremonial or another sort of elemental energy. 3) Make clear your desire. What do you wish to accomplish by preforming this spell? Make it as clear as possible in your mind. The clearer and more specific you are with your wish, the better chance you have of success. Write it down if need be as writing is a tool for focus. This note could also be used later as a talisman in the spellwork, or the basis of a chant. 4) What do you possess in the physical world that can help bring about this spell? AKA Correspondences. What is a Correspondence? A correspondence is a tool that a witch will use to direct energy to their will, like using a magnifying glass to take the sun's energy and focus it into a point where you can start a fire. Remember the magic comes from you and correspondences are ways to help up the power of your intent. What vibrations does the outcome put off? What correspondences are similar in vibration patterns to that of the outcome? How can you combine them to create a magical vortex of energy to attract and manifest your desire or will? 5) Put it all together. For more info on vibrations and feeling them I suggest Scott Cunningham's video on Herbal magic. Although he talks about feeling the vibratory energy (Aura) of plants, these techniques can also be applied to any object or person. After dedicated practice you will be able to sense the different 'wavelengths' so to speak. Some will feel fast, some slow, cold, hot, its different from Witch to Witch. In my last post titled "Witchcraft", I talked about adopting a spell from Judika Illes' book of 5000 spells to fit my own needs and religious beliefs. I also demonstrated just how deep correspondences can go. This time round I will be constructing one from scratch for psychic awareness by following the 5 steps I outlined above. According to step 1, I need to preform the spell in line with any religious beliefs I may hold. I being a Kemetic would preform the Iru. A Wiccan would cast circle and call the quarters. As I mentioned in step 2, I resonate with fire magic so I wish to include candle magic or incense magic in my spell. I'm also partial to Crystal grids so I want to use a grid as well. Since there is no set grid for Crystal layouts regarding psychic awareness, I will use my intuition. I'm already clear on my intention (Step 3) of raising my own psychic awareness. So what physical objects do I possess to help amplify this awareness? (Step 4) Let's look at the ideas I've already discussed. Crystals, incense, and candles. For crystals I have amythest, citrine, Lapis Lazuli, pyrite, smokey quartz, and tigers eye. All of these posses the ability to raise psychic awareness. I will of course charge them with my intent of raising psychic energy before laying my grid. For my incense I have the following herbs: basil, Lavender, marjoram, peppermint, rose, rosemary, Sage, and thyme. Again, these herbs all posess the ability to raise psychic awareness and will be charged thusly. For candle magic I turn to colors and sigils. Colors could be black, royal blue, purple, silver, white, or yellow. I'm going to be using purple because I have a nice 9 inch taper I want to use. (you could use 3 candles here instead of 1, 3 being a correspondence I discuss later.) As for sigils, there are many many techniques I could use to create one but I also have the option of using the astrological symbol of the Moon as the moon is associated with psychic powers. (if you used 3 candles you could use 3 different sigils/symbols like, a representation of you on one, your wish on another, and protection or power boosts on the 3rd.) I will be using the moon symbol. For more info on sigils and talisman making I suggest Lailoken Scathach's youtube video Wicca 2.0 How to make a Talisman. He goes into great detail on constructing sigils and the use of planetary magic squares. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Bcp5a5WyBoQ The numbers 3 and 9 are both associated with psychic power. My taper candle is 9 inches. How perfect is that? And the number 3 tells me how many gems and herbs to choose as well as how many nights to burn the candle. Now that I have everything I wish to include in the spell mapped out, I can put it all together (step 5) Part 2 Spell work Supplies: Tigers eye, citrine, pyrite, clear quartz point to activate crystal grid, basil, Lavender, peppermint, purple taper candle, needle to scratch sigil into candle, charcoal block + censor, lighter and an optional mortar and pestle. Opening rites/rituals I light the charcoal and place it in the censor. I like to add my intent to the herbs as I grind them together in my mortar so that's what I do. I then place a small amount on the charcoal block. (Add more as needed) Next I carve the symbol of the Moon onto my candle and add energy to the candle. This can be done in the form of chanting or 'pushing' energy into the wax and symbol. (I use my dominant hand because it feels natural but some may use their other hand believing the non dominant hand is linked with psychic awareness...personal choice.) Next I empower my gems/crystals with my intent. (If I wanted to raise psychic awareness through dreams I would have done the spellwork in my bedroom or close the ritual here and set up these tools in my bedroom including burning the incense. However this is just for general psychic awareness so I will be using my altar.) I place the candle in the center of my working space and arrange the crystals in a triangle around the candle. One of the points is facing me so that the energy is directed at me. (if you used 3 candles they could be the points of the triangle tieing them into the crystal grid, and have the one representing you facing you) This arrangement makes the symbol for a cup/chalice or the womb of a woman. This symbol is also associated with psychic ability. If I were to view the grid from above it would look like an upside down triangle. Using the quartz point I trace an invisible line connecting all the gems by pushing my personal power and intent through the quartz and into the previously charged crystals. This activates the grid. I then light my candle(s). I allow the candle(s) to burn undisturbed 1/3 of the way down then snuff it. I repeat this spell the next two nights till the candle(s) is(are) gone. I can leave the grid up but choose not to, instead I reconstruct the grid after empowering the stones again in my bedroom. Optional things to include would be magical timing (like during a certain phase of the moon) or chanting while spellcrafting (remember the note you made of your wish). The possibilities are endless and I encourage you to look into them yourself. Note: I am not nor have I ever been a member of a BTW coven and the mysteries I speak of should not be taken to be the BTW mysteries. These mysteries came about through my own meditations and study. A big shout out to Ben Heathorn for his notes and help!

Witchcraft
It's the manipulation and harmonizing of energy to cause a desired outcome or change. How does it work? By combining ritualized actions with intention aka willpower. Let's go through a spell together so I can show you an example of how magic works. Let's say I want to draw a new lover to myself so I pull out my copies of Judika Illes book of 5000 spells and Llywellyn's complete book of correspondences by Sandra Kaynes. I flip to pag 628 (love spells) and start reading. I find on pg 634 a spell headed 'Candle spell (3) New Moon'. I have the two figure candles and my own hair to be used as a taglock. She lists needing a taglock of the one you wish to attract but since I don't have a specific person in mind, I leave that taglock for the second candle out. I feel like this spell could use a bit more than just burning candles so I turn to my book on correspondences to see if there is any harmonizing energy I can add to boose the spell's power. Under the heading of "Love", pg 86-87, Kynes has a bunch of herbs listed. But how to use them? In 5000 spells, the spell we are looking to preform mentions that the left over wax can be used to make a talisman. I can add the herbs to that. I will mold the wax into a heart shape while still soft and add the herbal power to it. This will increase the love drawing power of the talisman. Since there are so many herbs listed, how many should I choose? I'm trying to attract a new lover so I check what the correspondence book has to say about about attraction. On pg 19 it says that the numbers associated with it are 4 and 5. I check my herb cabinet and find I have 4 of the herbs mentioned. They are rose, juniper, nutmeg, and apple. This is the art of Numerology. I choose red apple peel and red rose petals as red is also associated with love. I can also grind these up into a loose powder that I can burn on a charcoal tab to be used as incense. That sounds great and I make a note to do so. Judika Illes states to burn the candles over the course of a few nights for a set number of minutes. But how long for both? I again turn to Numerology. I already looked up attraction and found the numbers 4 and 5. Since the candles are big I add 4+5 to get 9. 9 nights seems ideal to me so we will go with that. But the burning time? 4-5 minutes is too short of a time for my liking. So again I add 4+5 to get 9. 9 minutes a night should do well for my spell. 9 is also a number associated with love. Perfect. Up to this point we have covered ritual actions (burning candles and incense) but not energy raising. So lets have a look at energy and why correspondences work. The harmonics of all matter are easy to see since everything is never static. Everything vibrates. All objects have a vibrational waveform of energy and this can ether grow with the addition of complimentary items like certain herbs, crystals, or color (as well as like minded witches). But adding the wrong thing could interfere with the spells energy reducing it effectiveness or canceling it out completely. (Thank you Ben Heathorn for this info!) All objects have this vibratory nature due all matter being composed of vibrating particles. Nothing is truly solid. (Science bitches XD) This energy put off by the vibrating particles fuels the intention and willpower of the witch's spell. By adding more 'energy' I up the spells power. But what about raising energy? Do I really need fancy tools and items to raise energy? No. There is always the energy put off by sound or movement. Through dancing, singing or chanting I can also cause more vibrations to occure and harness that energy for my spell. I am causing sound waves to permeate the incense and wax figures which empowers them with my intentions. When they are burned this energy is released into the universe. Since I suck at singing and dancing, I decide on a quick chant to be done for the 9 minute burn time. Lover sweet Lover kind Come to me You are mine Yeah that works. Looking back at the spell it says to start it on the new moon. Curiously, I flip to my correspondence book. I find 2 things. 1) on page 380, Kynes has one of the numbers associated with the moon as being 9. This ups the power of the spell through Numerology yet again and it was an unforseen energy amp, and 2) the new moon - full moon (called waxing) is also associated with love as well as drawing energy twards you. My 9 day burn time falls within this time frame. There are several other correspondences I can use to highten the power of my spell more. These can include preforming the spell on a Friday (Kynes book pg 392) or at dawn for a bit of romance (pg 394), or even carving sigils (on the other candle) of attributes I want my new lover to have such as kindness, a sense of humor, or a love of animals. Looking back at the forming of the extra wax into a heart talisman, I think I wouldn't want to get wax all over my pocket so I opt to make a red pouch out of felt to carry it in. It's protected that way from getting scuffed up. Again red is associated with love so I chose that color correspondence. Here is the spell in order as it should be preformed. Supplies: 2 red figure candles, needle, red thread, scissors, red felt, rose petals, nutmeg, juniper berries, dried red apple peel, lighter, charcoal block and censor, mortar and pestle, taglock of hair. As I am a straight woman I chose a female candle and a male candle. Obviously change em up to suit the gender of the person you wish to attract as well as your own. Preform opening rites Light the charcoal block and set it in the censor. Grind the herbs up in the mortar with the pestle and chant while you do so Lover sweet Lover kind Come to me You are mine. (The incense doesn't have to be a fine powder but should be fine enough to mix easily with the wax on day 9.) I place a small amount of the incense on the lit charcoal. Next I grab my male candle and carve with the needle the things I want my lover to embody and put it on one side of my altar. To the female candle I melt a wee bit of wax on top of the head and press my hair into the head. I set her facing the male candle but on the opposite side of the altar. (This represents how you are now. Separate but seeking. This is symbolic magic. The candle with the hair is symbolic of me and what I want.) Light the candles and let them burn while chanting for 9 minutes. Set a timer if need be. Snuff the candles and preform your closing rites. Repeat every day but each day move the candles closer together. On the final night have the candles touching, let the wax intermingle and candles burn out. This represents the desired outcome. Togetherness. Once the candles are out, pick up the left over wax (you may need to reheat it) and add the herbal mix. Form into a heart shape. Leave it to harden. Cut out 2 squares of red felt and sew a pouch together. Add the heart and sew closed. All while still chanting. Seal the spell Closing rites. This can be carried for 1 moon cycle. After that you can dispose of it by breaking it apart and burying it. Repeat every new moon till a lover comes. Notes: Because opening rituals can differ for each Witch I did not include things like 'Cast circle' or 'Preform the Iru'. A bit of advice, try to have all the supplies you need before preforming spell work. We're all human and we all make mistakes but running around your house looking for things will distract from your focus and thus take energy away from the spell. The order of this spell is done for a reason. I wouldn't put the figures together just to pull them apart at a later date and then reconnect them. This is conflicting ritualized actions and is basically like shaking an etch a sketch. That beautiful drawing you made (energy you raised) is now gone. You may also want to add a taglock to the heart talisman while forming it. However as a taglock was intermingled with the wax figure already this is optional. For more info on magic and witchcraft read the intro to 5000 spells but keep in mind these things that need to be corrected. 1) Firstly heka is not the Egyptian word for the energy that permeates all living things. It's authoritive speech. Or speaking with power (willpower). Because the Egyptians believed that words held power by speaking with clear intentions and a correct set of words they could change their world. This is our equivalent to casting spells. Although heka can be applied to anything including training your dog or giving a report in class. 2) Illes says that all energy is benevolent when its not. It's neutral. Later on pg 7 she says just that. It's a bit contradictory but a forgivable mistake. She goes on to state that all magical people that have a substantial amount of Magical energy are always charismatic and those that lack this energy are not. Thats a huge blanket statement and just not true. We all are human and have a range of emotions on a daily basis. No one is more magical than the next because we are all comprised of the same living energy. There certainly can be a gap of knowledge in harnessing this energy but that doesn't make one more magical. Just more experienced. Now having said that, yes, there are those that are born with the natural talent for picking up on this energy and using it but it is up to that person to hone their skills or ignore it. This also doesn't make them more magical than one who studied hard to be able to detect and use this same energy. 3) She goes a bit fluffy when she says there is a general rule with magic that spells will come back 3, 6, or 9 fold. This may be accepted by most Wiccans but certainly not all of the pagan community. At least that's my opinion. For more info on connecting with elemental energies I suggest Scott Cunningham's book Earth, Air, Fire, Water.

Energy Work
Before we can talk about how to witchcraft we need to talk about energy and how it's raised, harnessed, shaped and used to a witch's will through spell craft. Now there are some non traditional spells done without spell casting in a physical sense but we will get to that. So the way I learned to recognise energy and how to form it was to rub my palms together. Not hard or very fast mind you, just sort of lazy and lightish. You do want some pressure but not much. Focus is key here now so pay attention. You want to see in your mind a light either blue or white, whichever you prefer (I prefer blue) begin to form between your rubbing palms. Really see this in your mind (in other posts I will speak on techniques to strengthen visualization skills). After a while (can't tell ya how long cus it's different for every witch) you should begin to feel a tingling or warmth or liquidy feeling between your palms. Again it's different for everyone but those are the 3 ways I've heard it described. Once this light and feeling reaches its height slowly and I do mean slowly pull your hands apart. You should feel a resistance. As you pull apart see that light and feel it form a small sphere in your palms. Like holding a water balloon minus the balloon and the water is replaced with energy. This here, this ball of light is the fuel of magic. It's in its raw form still as it has not been programed with your intentions. Try to hold this visualization as long as possible. Its OK to collapse this energy and it's OK if the visualization drops. If however you feel jittery I suggest you ground that energy. Grounding energy simply refers to the process in which you push that excess energy out of yourself and into the earth. More on grounding can be found here: http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/magicandspellwork/qt/Grounding.htm So what is this energy? It's the cosmic life force which exists in all things. Minerals and animals carry an energy all their own that feels different between each of them. These in turn are different still than human energy but in the end it's all energy. It's all this cosmic force which exists in every cell, every atom that moves at sub atomic levels. Remember that nothing is truly solid. Everything moves in a certain pattern that manifests in our reality as a physical object/animal/person/ect. You can practice feeling the harmonic pattern of different natural items such as plants and crystals. To start rub your hands together as before palm to palm. Rub a wee bit harder than before but not aggressively so. After about 10-20 seconds shake em like you would if you were flicking off water after just rinsing your hands. Cup your hands around the object without touching it. See if you can feel any sort of energy being given off. Remember this can be unique to the witch. I, like a lot of witches, feel a sort of wavelength come off at a certain speed. Fast or slow. Some however feel as if as if it's warm or cold. It's OK to not feel it right away. Just keep practicing. Now depending on how these items feel, they can work together to program that raw magical energy we talked about earlier. These items move in harmony and become correspondences in spells. When used properly and in sync with the witch they can help the witch focus on their will. This focusing and thinking programs the items/correspondences. For example the color green is synonymous with money in witchcraft. The reason I guess Americans would think money is because our money is green. But that's not the only reason. See the color green has a certain wavelength which matches the wavelengths associated with the idea of wealth, the earth, materialistic desires and several other things. When these combined with the raw fuel of raised energy and your desire, your willpower, your thoughts, magic is born. These items in unison become the physical representation of the outcome you wish. This is why you don't see the person sick while doing a healing spell. You see them well and free of pain and misery. Your thoughts carry this energy too. That's why focusing on your desire is a key element in witchcrafting. It will be mentioned throughout this guide as its #1 on the how to witch crafting list. So now that we covered all that, let's talk about how we harness this energy. We start like before by rubbing our hands and forming a ball of energy. And just like we did in feeling for different energies we are going to cup the ingredient/correspondence in our spell. You may also "charge" the spell item like a bag or loaded candle or oil in one go instead of doing each individual piece. Some ingredients you will use will feel so powerful you may not feel the need to charge them individually but rather simply add them to the working. That's OK but some items like salt have multiple almost conflicting energy patterns and so charging them with our intent is key in magic. Now that we have the ingredient in-between our hands, we are going to visualize and feel that energy pushing into the spell item. When using herbs I prefer to physically hold the individual herbs or resins and charging them one at a time. I have more time to charge it with my will and align it's harmony with my own. They will strengthen my spell work. Don't worry if you don't get it yet. We will go over a simple spell together to help you to understand how to do this. So to start let's make a loaded rune candle for peace in the home. Timing, numerology, planetary influences, crystals, herbs, colors, and all kinds of things can lend aid to your magic. Most of not all these things will be explored in future posts. We first start with what we wish to accomplish by preforming this spell. Get a piece of paper and a pencil to brainstorm if necessary. It will come in later for making sigils and other magics you can preform to strengthen your spell. As I said this will be a candle that will be burned for peace. I would write down candle on the scrap paper or rather my book of mirrors. More on that later though. We look to color magic to find an appropriate color that will lend energy to our working. Blue is a correspondence of peace. Blue's energy matches that of peace making blue a corresponding element to peace. For a large list of correspondences I suggest Llewellyn's Complete Book of Correspondences: A Comprehensive & Cross-Referenced Resource for Pagans & Wiccans by Sandra Kynes. There are other books regarding specifics in magic such as The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall, Color Magic by Richard Webster, Tarot for Beginners by Barbara Moore, Cunningham's Encyclopedia of magical herbs, ect.. I find Kynes's book to be a good beginner option until you are able to find or read info on specific fields of magical correspondences. Anyway moving on...So I have a blue chime candle but blue glass jar candles or regular taper candles work just as well. This candle will be burned to return peace to the home after a fight or any bad energy that comes creeping in due to daily life. Since this candle will be 'loaded' I need to find out what herbs correlate to peace and cross reference them with ones I happen to have on hand. A loaded candle has items embedded into it by the witch. Usually herbs or personal concerns (tag locks). The herbs I have are basil, coffee, lime, orange, lavender, olive. I write them down in my BoM/scrap paper. I have more but I'm trying to use common herbs and flowers found in a variety of places. I'm cheap like that lol but it's also to show what magic tools can be obtained very easily. Now using numerology we learn that the number 2 is associated with peace. I apply numerology by choosing 2 herbs to load my candle with. I choose lavender flowers and olive oil. I circle them on the paper to remind myself later of which ingredients to grab. The oil will be added in small doses to the charged and powdered lavender flowers so they can better stick to the rune we will be carving on the candle. It won't be massive amounts of oil being used. Just enough to barely moisten. An alternative option would be to add lavender essential oil to olive oil and anoint the candle with this mix before being burned but I like to load my candles. This is a personal choice. You should use what works for you. I prefer to use runes over sigils. That's my choice so I will be using the rune Jera. You can of course use a sigil if that's what works for you. Now that we got the ingredients listed we will still need a few things to make the candle. Miscellaneous items include a needle or witches blade (also known as an athame or a bolline - depending upon personal ideas about whether to cut with an athame or not) to carve the rune on the candle, a mortar and pestle to crush the lavender (this is optional) and a lighter or candle flame to heat the blade/needle/nail/ect. First grab the lavender and mortar. We're going to charge about a tablespoon full of blossoms in our hands. Never empower herbs in bulk as many herbs have different properties. For example pepper can both repel and protect. We rub our hands together to get that energy going. We think about being calm and peaceful, being in an environment of lightness. As we visualize this we feel that energy rising. The energy becomes peaceful in feeling. Now shake your hands out like theyre wet but still see that energy/light in your hands. Pour some lavender in your hand. We cup the herbs with our hands and push that energy of peacefulness into the herbs. Grind em up with the pestle all the while thinking of peacefulness. Using your carving implement heat the tip and begin to carve the rune Jera into the wax. Make it sort of wide and deep as we will be packing the carving. Don't penetrate to the wick though. Now that your carving is done, dip your finger into the olive oil and apply it to the carving. Press the ground herbs into the carving. Brush off the excess. Add a drop of olive oil to the outside to moisten the herbs and get them to stick a bit better. You can choose to pour a small amount of olive oil into a small dish so you can charge it with peacefulness too. The choice is yours. Repeat till entire carving is filled with herbs. Now we want to empower the candle so once again we rub our palms together like a 1950's cartoon villain. We visualize peacefulness in our home. Cupping the freshly made loaded candle we push that peaceful energy into the candle. Remember that sound has a wavelength too, same as everything else. Chanting can permeate the candle with your willpower as well. If you had a chant you wished to use that's totally fine. Speaking with authority is a very valid form of magic. The Egyptians called it heka. Now for more magical energy I could do this spell during a planetary hour associated with peace. Monday is associated with the moon and the moon with peace. Planetary magic is something we will explore more on later. As the candle burns it released that peaceful energy we built up into it. Our spell is complete. More magic to come so stay tuned!

Powders
Powders
Feel free to mix up the proportions listed or experiment in any way you see fit.
Recipes are from Cunningham, Yornwode, Slater, and Malbrough. Some have been altered.
Each recipe calls for equal parts of each herb. Grind them to a powder in a mortar & pestle or a coffee grinder (just be sure to clean very thoroughly afterward!) Recipes calling for oils, use quantities that seem appropriate. These are meant to be powders, not liquids so use oils sparingly or allow to dry and regrind.
Asbestos free talc, such as that found in modern talcum powder has been suggested to increase the risk of ovarian cancer in women who apply talcum powder regularly in the genital area. So women please do not apply talc to your bed or body. It’s supposed to be a carrying agent and you can sub in something less dangerous. I use Cascarilla powder to add life. However salt or baking soda is also fine.

For this Hoodoo powder to work you have to sprinkle some on the Judges seat and in the jury box….which is more than a little hard to do, or around a purple candle in a protection ritual, easy to do. I do the same thing with coffee tins and empty powdered protein containers.
The Domestic Garden Witch: Souper Recycling Ideas!
Tumblr media
So maybe you’re a college witch with limited space and money, limited to the one window in your dorm. Or, maybe you’re a witch without extensive backyard space who wants to start up a magical garden. Perhaps you’re a kitchen witch who wants the freshest herbs right at her fingertips.
For many witches, having a garden seems to be a bit of a no-brainer. After all, plants and magic go hand-in-hand. Plus, when thinking of a witch, it’s hard not to think of a cottage in the woods with a little vegetable garden out front. Unfortunately for the majority of us, our cottage in the woods is a tiny flat, and our garden out front is a windowsill with limited space.
This is when it comes time to embrace your craftiness and bring your garden indoors! Not only does it place your garden in a convenient location, it also allows you to freshen the air, recycle what would otherwise harm the earth, and embrace your witchy green thumb!
Soup and Coffee Tins? Perfect!
So spring break is over and students all over the country are hunkering down for another quarter (or semester) of frantic studying, testing, and praying for sleep while pulling all-nighters. However, what’s likely also on the minds of these students is the need to have access to fresh ingredients on a budget. Well, college witches, search no more!
Chances are that in packing up some food for your dorm, you’ve also managed to amass a sizeable collection of soup cans and coffee tins. Whether your diet is exclusively cold Spaghetti-O’s and coffee or if you’ve just never gotten rid of the can from your sick day chicken noodle soup, these tin cans are useful as seed starters, herb planters, and rustic decoration.
Like any container garden, the process is simple. Carefully puncture a few drainage holes at the bottom of the can, provide a layer of gravel, add soil and seedlings/seeds, and water. But the fun is in what you can do to make these little DIY planters have a bit of personality! For that, we jump straight to some witchy talk!
How Can I Witch This?
I know, this container seems fairly self-explanatory. Sigils, symbols, runes and whatnot painted or drawn on the can to promote health and whatever else the plant corresponds to, and crystals added to the soil for the same reason. But I wanted to take a step back and consider the container itself for a moment.
In previous Domestic Garden Witch articles, I’ve focused on what you can do with the containers rather than what the containers might link to in witchcraft. In this case, I would like to change that. Tin cans, while inexpensive, are produced today not from tin (usually), but from aluminum or steel. Depending upon what the can stores, it could also be tin-plate steel. Regardless, these metals have some influence in what you can do on a magical level.
First, tin is a wonderful metal with a bit of history in witchcraft. In many traditions, it is most strongly associated with healing, prosperity, and money spells. Consider growing plants such as basil or rosemary in containers made with tin, allowing the metal to correspond with the uses of these herbs in your spells.
Aluminum is inexpensive, fairly plentiful these days, and actually does have a use in modern witchcraft despite its lack of historical magical attributes. Today, it can most often be associated with thriftiness, reflection, malleability, and travel. If you’re looking to work spells which encourage financial responsibility, or introspective thought, consider using aluminum cans with the appropriate plants and crystals.
Man has used steel quite a bit throughout history, and while we tend to have a stronger bond with iron (iron having been one of the first metals we’ve worked with, after copper and bronze), steel does have a few magical properties that have survived. Like iron, steel is most strongly associated with protection (so much so that in a few practices where metals are significant considerations, it’s acceptable to use an athame of steel in place of iron). If your tin can is actually made of steel, as many coffee cans are, consider growing plants such as rosemary or tomatoes (as starters) whose properties resonate quite strongly with iron and steel.
Not sure what your container is made of? Check to see if it’s magnetic. If it sticks, chances are that it is made of steel or has a high content of iron. If not, then it is most likely aluminum. Ultimately, however, you’re going to want to work with your gut feelings. If you don’t feel that your container brings anything to the magic, then don’t incorporate it into the spell, opting instead to just make use of the thriftiness of the idea. If you have a steel can but feel that it works best for love spells, then by all means grow that lavender in it!
May all your harvests be bountiful! Blessed Be! )O(
