GOD’S OWN COUNTRY (2017) Official Trailer - Johnny Saxby works long hours in brutal isolation on his family’s remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and casual sex. When a handsome Romanian migrant worker arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. An intense relationship forms between the two which could change Johnny’s life forever.
Today we have this truly sublime work by tumblr artist @cacevart.
The quiet strength of this digital art piece really speaks to me. I love the details: the torn curtain, Gheorghe's beard, the pattern on the pillow, and how the artist's skillful hand manages to convey an intimacy and quiet strength using the warm earth-tone pallette and the line of the figures.
This is such an important, lovely moment in the film, from Johnny's slamming into the caravan and pouting and Gheorghe's fond, sleepy smile that says he has Johnny's number no matter how much sulking Johnny is doing. The way he scoots over on the seat and starts to run his finger over the side of Johnny's face, that kills me every single time because you realize that Johnny's never had that: a lover that teased him, seduced him, cajoled him. He'd never had a lover. How Gheorghe kisses his neck until Johnny hunches his shoulders, smiling at the tickles of Gheorghe's beard, and the gentle, sweet kisses that follow.
@cacevart's utilization of negative space also helps the feeling that the viewer is watching a tender moment between these two, very similar to Joshua James Richard's camera work because the blocking is the same, the shadows, and the angle of their faces.
Just a wonderful, poignant piece. Thank you to the artist for sharing this with us.
“People have responded to a story of hope and a story of change. We see Johnny at the beginning of the film as a character who is closed-off emotionally and unable to be vulnerable. Then, by the end, we see a possibility of change.” - Josh O’Connor
“…the film ends in a hopeful way, but it is open-ended. It ends with a hopeful beginning, I should say. I don’t know what happens after they close the door in the end, but they really fought for their story and their love.” - Alec Secareanu
