TTPD selling 2.6 million units in its first week is ~techincally~ the second biggest opening week of all time, but it is for all intents and purposes THE biggest album opening week of all time, when you adjust for how much the consumption of music and purchases have changed since Adele's record was set (and what counts as a sale and how those sales were made).
It is not a stretch to call this the biggest first week for an album since we've been tracking and reporting on album sales. INSANITY.

Taylor Swift sees her superstar status soar to even greater heights today, as 11th studio album The Tortured Poets Department earns her an array of accolades.
15 years after her debut UK chart appearance, Taylor proves she’s truly at the top of her game as she secures a 12th Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart.
New Official Charts Company data released today reveals Taylor has shifted a staggering 270,000 UK chart units in seven days – eclipsing her previous personal best of 204,000, when Midnights debuted atop the chart in 2022. But that’s just the start.
The Tortured Poets Department surpasses Adele’s 30 to deliver biggest first week in seven years
The Tortured Poets Department surpasses Adele’s 2021 release 30 to earn the UK’s biggest opening week in seven years. Taylor has 9,000 units on Adele’s first week figure, with 30 having managed 261,000 in seven days.
The Tortured Poets Department now boasts the biggest opening week since Ed Sheeran’s 2017 blockbusting record ÷ (Divide), which logged 670,000 first-week UK chart units.
Taylor matches Madonna’s all-time record
With 12 Number 1 records now under her belt, Taylor Swift equals Madonna’s all-time UK Official Chart record; drawing level as the female artist with the most Number 1 albums in Official Albums Chart history.
The Tortured Poets Department joins Red (2012), 1989 (2014), reputation (2017), Lover (2019), folklore (2020), evermore (2020), Fearless (Taylor’s Version) (2021), Red (Taylor’s Version) (2021), Midnights (2022) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) (2023) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in Taylor’s tally of consecutive chart-toppers.
Taylor also draws level with Bruce Springsteen; with The Boss boasting 12 UK Number 1 LPs, too.
Only four acts in chart history claim more UK chart-toppers: The Beatles (16), The Rolling Stones (14), Robbie Williams (14) and Elvis Presley (13).
Taylor bags biggest opening week for an international act in 18 years
In terms of international artists delivering huge releases in the UK, nobody has come as close to Scissor Sisters’ first-week figure of 288,000, achieved with their second studio album Ta-Dah! back in 2006.
Taylor Swift outperforms The Beatles with the fastest accumulation of 12 Number 1 albums in Official Chart history
No other artist has notched up 12 Number 1 albums in such a short space of time. Taylor Swift has done it in 11 years and 6 months, from Red in October 2012 to The Tortured Poets Department on 26 April 2024. This surpasses The Beatles who managed the feat in 14 years and 1 month between Please Please Me (May 1963) and The Beatles At Hollywood Bowl in June 1977.
Taylor extends own record as the only artist to claim 12 Number 1 albums in the 21st century
Taylor also extends her own record as the only artist to claim 12 Number 1 albums in the 21st century, all of which she has achieved consecutively; from her first UK Number 1 album 12 years ago, Red, in 2012, to The Tortured Poets Department in 2024.
A third Official Chart Double for Taylor
Soaring straight to the Official Singles Chart summit with Fortnight ft. Post Malone, Taylor also scores her third Official Chart Double. Previously, Taylor achieved the relatively rare feat with Midnights and its lead single Anti-Hero (2022) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) and Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version) (2023).
Fortnight becomes Taylor’s fourth Official Number 1 single in the UK, joining Look What You Made Me Do (2017), Anti-Hero (2022) and Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version) (2023). It also sees Post Malone bag his second UK chart-topper (and first in seven years), following 2017’s Rockstar with 21 Savage.
Taylor further dominates this week’s Official Singles Chart, with title track The Tortured Poets Department (3) and Down Bad (4) making their Top 5 debuts.
Recognising Taylor’s incredible achievements, Martin Talbot, Chief Executive, Official Charts Company says:
“What a week for Taylor Swift! It is always fantastic news for the entire music sector to have an artist of Taylor’s calibre returning with new music – but the fact she has done so with such huge, record-breaking impact underlines again why we love music, and her, so much.
“The list of her new records are almost too lengthy to list, suffice to say, this is truly Tay-Tay’s moment – and we are all here for it.”

Possibly an unoriginal thought, but in the bridge of The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived when Taylor yells "Good riddance!" And there are a bunch of vocal layers yelling it behind her... does anyone else think it's possible that Gracie Abrams is on the track for that one tiny part because her album is called Good Riddance? Or am I losing my mind.

"we learned the right steps to different dances" is such a beautiful way to explain that nobody did anything wrong but it does not work out if you have different goals or different ideals of life, maybe sometimes things don't work out and it is nobodys fault

"So being in the public eye since I was a young teenager, there's a lot that that does to your perception of the world, your perception of yourself—the idea that the world has this sense of ownership, and not just a right, but they feel they have a responsibility to judge you, and to critique you, and to weigh in. And that can really toy with you. Who's Afraid of Little Old Me? was a song I wrote alone, sitting at hte piano, in one of those moments where I felt sort of bitter about just all the things we do to our artists as a society and as a culture. There's a lot about this particular concept on The Tortured Poets Department. What do we do to our writers and our artists and our creatives? We put them through hell, we watch what they create, then we judge it. We love to watch artists in pain, often to the point where I think sometimes as a society, we provoke that pain, and we just watch what happens. So there's lines about feeling like I've been in the circus, those kinds of metaphors, or feeling like I'm sort of like a witch in a haunted house. Those are some ways that I feel sometimes when I'm not able to kind of right the ship and cope with my normal coping mechanisms. So this song was just a very, very true way that I feel sometimes, and it's always good when you can be honest about those things."
— Taylor on Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?

The numbers grow ever larger for Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, according to initial reports to data tracking firm Luminate. (Luminate’s sales, streaming and airplay data powers Billboard’s charts. All numbers in this story reflect U.S. consumption only.)
In the album’s first four days of release (April 19-22), the set’s collected 31 songs (on its deluxe edition) generated 602.3 million on-demand official streams in the U.S. – breaking Swift’s own record for the largest streaming week for an album by a woman. She previously held the record with the opening frame of her last studio album, Midnights, which collected 549.3 million on-demand official streams for its 20 tracks (in the week ending Oct. 27, 2022).
The Tortured Poets Department also claims the third-largest streaming week overall, surpassing Midnights, and only trailing the opening frames of Drake’s Scorpion (745.92 million for its 25 songs in 2018) and Certified Lover Boy (743.67 million for its 21 songs in 2021).
Equivalent Album Units & Sales So Far: In the album’s first four days of release, The Tortured Poets Department has earned 2.1 million equivalent album units, with traditional album sales (purchases of digital downloads, CDs, vinyl LPs and cassettes) accounting for 1.6 million of that sum.
With 2.1 million units earned so far, The Tortured Poets Department has the biggest week for any album since Adele’s 25 debuted with 3.482 million units (week ending Nov. 26, 2015), and the second-largest week (by units) for any album since the Billboard 200 began measuring by equivalent album units in December 2014.
In terms of straight album sales, that 1.6 million total is inclusive of both over-the-counter and download purchases of The Tortured Poets Department made April 19-22, in addition to a likely large number of pre-orders of the album through Internet retailers that were shipped to customers for arrival on release day.
Fifth-Biggest Sales Week in Modern Era: After just four days, The Tortured Poets Department has the largest sales week for any album since Adele’s 25 bowed with 3.378 million copies sold (week ending Nov. 26, 2015), and Swift’s largest sales week ever (as reported on April 20, see below).
Currently, The Tortured Poets Department has the fifth-largest sales week for an album in the modern era (since Luminate began electronically tracking sales in 1991). The top five biggest weeks are (all in debut weeks): Adele’s 25 (3.378 million), *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached (2.416 million, in 2000), *NSYNC’s Celebrity (1.878 million, 2001), Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP (1.76 million, 2000) and The Tortured Poets Department (1.6 million, 2024).
The Tortured Poets Department’s sales are aided by its availability across more than 20 different editions among physical and digital configurations (see story, April 20).
Vinyl Sales Continue To Grow: Of the 1.6 million sold of The Tortured Poets Department so far, vinyl sales represent 800,000 of that sum. The album – available in six vinyl variants – already broke Swift’s own record for the single-largest sales week for a vinyl album in the modern era (as reported April 22, see below).
The sales and streaming activity of The Tortured Poets Department will increase in the coming days, with the current tracking week ending on Thursday, April 25. The album’s final first-week numbers (equivalent album units, total traditional album sales and streaming figures) are expected to be announced by Billboard on Sunday, April 28, along with its assumed large debut on the multi-metric Billboard 200 albums chart (dated May 4).
If The Tortured Poets Department debuts atop the Billboard 200, it will mark Swift’s 14th No. 1 album, extending her record for the most among women. She would also tie Jay-Z for the most No. 1s among soloists. The only act with more No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 is The Beatles, with 19.
All 13 of Swift’s full-length studio albums and re-recorded projects from 2008’s Fearless (her second album) through 2023’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) have debuted at No. 1.
