The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (and Her Only Wife)

This will contain spoilers and it is just my thought on each husband.

1. Poor Ernie Diaz. I didn’t mind this guy. Very creepy, a man his age dating Evelyn, but he didn’t hit her or cheat on her. I know what your thinking wow the bar is on the floor and yeah because I just finished the Goddamn Don Alder part.

2. Goddamn Don Alder. This asshole. I was not fond of him at all the only good things that came out of his part was Celia St. James. I love Celia. He hit Evelyn and Evelyn had to cover it up, genuinely so sad reading that that was just something that happened back then and people saw her bruises and did not care. He also cheated on her. Rude. But much like Evelyn I didn’t really care about him cheating because we had just found out Celia was a lesbian! Then Celia and Evelyn got to spend days together plus the bond between Evelyn and Harry growing. Harry is a sweetie.

3. Gullible Mick Riva. This cocky fuck. He really talked down to my beloved, Evelyn. Evelyn had all of the power there from our perspective but the tabloids, and even Mick thought they had all the power. Also the way that Mick Riva just said in a newspaper what I would do for a night with her. Creepy. Okay sure sexualizing is the new normal I don’t care it was still creepy. I am glad this lasted a night. He was not a bad husband but he was too arrogant for me to consider him a good one.

4. Clever Rex North. Got to love a classic marriage stunt. Rex North is a player and that’s kind of endearing. Can you tell I like Mark Sloan and Logan Huntzberger? (I just want to note I am writing what I am thinking of the husbands as I read it.) Okay wow I should’ve really thought about it saying Clever Rex North. Yeah he is clever not in the way I wanted or expected him to be. He was pretty clever in trying to get into Evelyn’s pants. Okay that part was pretty quick and I liked how they conspired together. Honestly a good husband for Evelyn. They didn’t love each other or sleep in the same bed but luckily they got what they wanted from each other. Also it was sad to see in this part that Ruby married Don Alder and he was also abusing her.

5. Brilliant, Kindhearted, Tortured Harry Cameron. I love him so much. Harry and Evelyn are definitely soulmates. I love that they decided to have a child together. The little platonic marriage/child bliss moment they had when Celia and John were gone was everything. And that is a high compliment from me because every part with Celia in it is my favourite part. I love that when she showed Harry the note from Max he just wanted her to divorce him and fall in love again. That his only con from divorcing her was that he couldn’t call her his wife. I love their friendship. Harry was an amazing husband for Evelyn. Again not in the traditional way a husband would be called amazing but his part gave us the John-Celia-Harry-Evelyn dynamic and I love it. I was so upset for him when John died.

6. Disappointing Max Girard. I thought they might be good for each other than I saw the adjective before his name and I think he might just disappoint. A rude bitter french man that only cares about parading around Evelyn like arm candy. I can’t believe he was like “Leave Harry for me! I love you! you’re my muse!” then he just didn’t care anymore. It sucks that Evelyn loved Don and Max and wanted those marriages to work and to love them but they are sucky people. Now I hate him he found the letters, he was cheating on her and called her a slur multiple times. A pretty shitty husband one of the few marriages Evelyn went into for love and it was so sad to see what became of it.

7. Agreeable Robert Jamison. Celia’s brother. Circumstances suck for this one, Celia is dying so she sets you up with her brother so that you can inherit all of her things without it being suspicious and so he can settle down. It was so depressing and comforting to read Celia and Evelyn having those final moments of bliss.

8. Celia St. James. Not a husband but the only wife. I love her I love her so much and I am so sad that they didn’t get to spend their lives together but I am glad the world knows their truth. Celia was the best thing that ever happened to Evelyn which puts her above the husbands yes even Harry sorry not sorry.

Now my ranking Harry, then Robert, then Rex, then Mick, then Ernie, then Max and lastly Don. Celia is number 1 obviously. Monique’s storyline was such an interesting aspect as I had no idea it was going to happen before I started reading it. I love reflective books in which the main character is telling their story. I love Evelyn and Monique and Celia and Harry and John and everyone this was so good. Also that moment in the beginning when someone was like she was married eight times and then someone else was like not it was seven times. But Evelyn was basically married eight times due to her bedroom ceremony with Celia. Brilliant.
