A 1986 ICSC Shopping Center Award winner, TRAPPERS ALLEY is a specialty shopping and dining complex located in Greektown, Detroit. Developed by Cordish Embry & Associates, this 145,000 square foot, five-building project skillfully blends nostalgic elements of 19th century Detroit with the contemporary dynamics of today. It is home to an exciting collection of everything from high fashion boutiques and specialty shops to a rooftop nightclub and corner pub.
Originally used as a turn-of-the-century fur processing plant and outlet, Trappers Alley has been transformed into an appealing urban marketplace that’s bringing shopping excellence back to the city. The five glass enclosed buildings feature wooden floors and rafters, brick archways and 100-year-old processing equipment, remnants of the property’s history. Trappers Alley is located in Greektown, a European-styled neighborhood which originally served as the settling place for Greek immigrants. The heart of Greektown is made up of a colorful concoction of markets, bakeries, shops and restaurants centered around the city’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral. It’s just a five minute walk from Detroit’s financial district, waterfront, and convention center. Opened, in the Spring, 1985, Trappers Alley now boasts more than 90 shops and restaurants. Plans call for the opening of an additional building in the complex to house additional retail tenants and a performing arts theatre.
