Creative Critical Reflection
How does your project use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups?
1)Whispers from the Past is an opening film in the horror genre. There are several conventions related to the genre in my film opening challenges and respects. Other conventions using conventions make it easier for the audience to recognize the genre of the film therefore, knowing what to expect and making the story easy to grasp for example, in my opening, there is a creating sound of a door opening by using this in my phone. I believe I establish the genre so the audience can know the key aspects of the story that will unfold which links the supernatural and mystery conventions such as dark and light, cold colors, and old abandoned locations used to create the appropriate Mise en scene for the opening. One aspect of my film is that it can be seen as both as using as breaking conventions in the past even if it is only played for two minutes, the story somewhat unfolds the future. When it comes to sound, there are no conventions broken as my film uses a normal ambiance sound. There is another aspect that breaks the conventions of storytelling. The audience knows from the beginning that the story is not a usual one because the character doesn't know the story which causes the feeling of uncertainty that extends to the audience, without any usage of Music we wanted to catch the attention of the audience by using strange sound as a character is confused by the creek and starts to panic. This also makes the social issues and groups represented as such things are common and the character might create fear.
2)Whispers from the past, aiming to evoke strong emotions and create tension, immerse viewers in a terrifying experience. Our primary goal is to evoke fear of suspense, and in my film, it is done through an eerie atmosphere to keep the audience on edge. It often creates fear such as supernatural or loss of control. Throughout the film. There is only one aspect that keeps the audience's attention present. Overall the camera shorts angles cuts are the same. Camera movements and angles also help the audience stay rather than become disinterested. However we didn't use any unnecessary throughout the film, there is a calm ambient sound when all of a sudden there’s a creek. This keeps the audience engaged and creates tension. There are various ways to promote the film. We can start with creating an Online site or advertising it on social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, et cetera other strategies would be distributing it and presenting it in the theatre or private screening.
3)I had no idea how to edit or even operate and hardware on the Mac studio display. I'm going to talk about my editing skills which I never had and I was clueless about it before working on this project. I had never used any editing software ever before but because I had the editor's role I had to work very hard and learn how to operate the software. A few things that helped me were online demos and I watched videos on YouTube about basic editing techniques for the project. I use Final Cut Pro out of other software, it is comparatively easy and super useful when you really know what is going on and know how to use it properly. watching tutorials. I learned how to work with color correction, color, grading, and other requirements for the project. It took some practice and a few trials and errors but I managed to give my best although I didn't reach the full potential of the software. I was given two roles, editor and production designer. Now I will talk about my role as a production designer I have developed numerous skills throughout the project. I've got a better vision throughout the project. I've got a better vision and can visualize strongly and creatively. It can get a little hectic on the day of the project. It is important to prepare beforehand and to understand the setting and various skills I've developed strong interpersonal skills that are essential when working with the director cinematographer et cetera. It has become easier for me to picture a set and know what is necessary. It is important to pay attention to every detail of the set design, props, costume, and overall visual aesthetics. I have noticed a major improvement in my editing skills and as a production designer and I'm happy to see my skills have increased drastically.
4) I have used many different programs while working on this project. We used a lot of props and hardware during the filming software and online programs were both used. Technologies be used on location while filling we used one continuous light(FX 400) throughout the production, we used the Canon 5D Mark 3 camera, and one tripod. There was usage of many props for example making of the bed, bedsheets, books, soft toys, lights, and printouts. I use my iPhone 14 pro as the clapper and to take stills. The device used for editing was a Mac studio display. The software and online programs used in this project. for editing I used Final Cut Pro X, I used an app for the clapper, and Tumblr to maintain the blocks. I used YouTube to search for foley sounds. I used Microsoft Excel Word to create a master breakdown and I used 'thatstoryboard' website to create a storyboard.

Editing day 2
Day 2 and last day of editing. Today we were completing colour grading and tilting. We had planned for cool colours such as purple and light shades of blue to create an eerie atmosphere and to make it look like a horror film. Today I was all prepared for my task since yesterday I had messed up a little. First I started with warm colours like yellow and orange but that didn't work out. It just wasn't coming out the way we wanted it. After a few tries we finally got the perfect colour theme, blue with a hint of purple, grey and very little of pink. After colour grading we moved on to title and font, the font and title both were already chosen. We selected a spooky and gothic font for the title. It took us almost 15 minutes to finish title sans font. That was the end, editing was all done and we just had to watch the opening scene once before we leave. Thankfully there were no mistakes or any leftouds.

Editing day 1
It's finally time to edit. We're now in the final stage of completing our film. We are completely done with shooting and now we begin with editing. As an editor I was super nervous because it was the first time I was editing. I started with collecting all the clips and cutting them. Honestly, I was struggling in the beginning and it took sometime for me to understand all the keys but once I started editing I got a hang of it. After cutting all the shots and placing them in an order, I started finding the folly sounds we needed. After finding the appropriate sounds we moved onto placing them each scenes. That was enough for the day, it was time to wrap up.

Day 1
First day of shooting. We had already prepared a shooting schedule and we followed it throughly. Before the actor arrived we had to check the shooting location and make sure whether everything is fine. Before the actor arrived me and Meher started setting up the classroom and turned it to a bedroom for shooting. Soon the actor arrived, i gave the actor her change for the shoot and started with preparing her and we're ready to roll. As our shoot was very small we only had 1 location throughout the film. We started off with scene 1 and i was told to use the clapper before shooting any scene. While shooting the first scene we had a few difficulties because the actor got nervous and couldn't give the exact expressions we needed. But after a lot of trials we were finally able to get the perfect shot. As soon as the first scene got done, without wasting any time we moved on with the 2 then 3 and lastly 4 scene. It was a fun experience, we thought we couldn't it today but we didn't give up and honestly it went pretty smooth. By 3:45 we were done with the entire shoot, wrapped up and left.

Title font selection
Fonts used in horror movies after aim to create an eerie, unsettling or ominous atmosphere. They might be bold, gothic, distressed, or have a handwritten and jagged appearance. While selecting a title font our film, we first chose 3D bold title font but then later realised that it wasn't giving the film an eerie effect. Then we did some research and found a website 'dafont' and we selected the 'quiet horror story' font.

Shots
The camera shot angle is used to specify the location where the camera is placed to take a shot. The position of the camera in relation to the subjects can affect the way the viewer perceives the scene. A scene may be shot simultaneously from multiple camera angles to amplify the cinematic effect and the emotions.
Here are the camera shots and angles used in our film:

Why is lightening important
“Lighting tell the audience where to look “the lighting setup adds the eye to a specific actor, prop or part of a scene. “lighting reflects the phycology of character” the amount, size, color, and harshness of light surrounding the character can be used to match their emotions. ‘”Lighting defines and supports the genre of the film.” lighting is the tool that conveys mood most clearly. for eg on one of the famous film genres known for its distinct lighting style is the film ” Noir” characterized by the stark contrast between light and dark, dramatically patterned shadows, and unique composition and framing choices.
we can know to decide to use different types of lighting on different scenarios and situations created in our film. For example, the lighting would be brighter if the charters of our film are standing in the light near the window, a little dim if they are near the stare case, and a little dimmer if they are in a dark room.

Budget
Apparently, we knew we had to do our shoot in the school, so luckily we didn't have to rent any other place. Talking about actors, we already knew who we're going to cast, We were again fortunate that the actors voluntarily agreed to this. The costumes which we required for the actors to wear, they luckily had it in their closet, so there was again no requirement for us to spend on their costumes. Our school had everything from camera to bed and all that we needed was avaliable, so we did not have to worry at all. Surprisingly our school was kind enough to lend it to us. Rest of the items thaat were required for mise-en-scene were brought from home. Such as blanket, bedsheet, pillow, a few printouts and decorative lights. The only thing we had to purchase was a bathrobe, which was for 1300rs and some snacks which was for approximately 50-60rs.
This is our budgeting:

Storyboard
A storyboard is a visual representation of a film sequence and breaks down the action into individual panels. It is a series of ordered drawings, with camera direction, dialogue, or other pertinent details. It sketches out how a video will unfold, shot by shot.
This is the storyboard of our film:

Casting
Casting is a pre-production process for selecting a suitable type of actor, dancer, or singer for a particular role. Our cast for the film is my mutual friend Naya. We chose her and got her auditions done. The audition turned out very smooth, Naya was the perfect cast for our film.
