Re-Making The Pitch Sheet

I found out that what I put on the pitch sheet before was why to descriptive of what the game was, and I shouldn't be explaining the game and I should instead sell the game. Get the viewers interested in the game and make them want to play it by just giving them a few descriptive phrases.

I made the paragraphs sound more like a blurb and left it kind of vague to make the viewer want to know more. How will the game play out? Who are we? Why do we, the player, react this way? Who are these girls? And so on.

I'm very happy with how this turned out, I feel it's a lot better than how it was before, it makes the viewer ask questions which is what I want. I want them to willingly want these questions answered meaning they will have to play the game.

Over The Garden Walls Review

For today we watched Over The Garden Walls. This was a very cool series, sometimes it can be quite boring but I loved the ending and the monster as well as the art that comes with the show.

This show is about two brothers, one 15 years old and the other I don't believe was established but we do know he is very young compared to his brother. They are both lost in the dark woods trying to find their way home. Running into different people, creatures and monsters. Trying to survive and struggling to find out who to trust.

This is what I put down on paper:

“This show is quite good, I love how detailed the backgrounds are, they are just so beautiful to look at. I believe the choice to make the backgrounds this detailed and the characters very simple because it shows how lost they are. It shows they aren't supposed to be there.

The characters are also quite good, they are very well written and both have responsibilities that they can't handle yet.

The sound design is quite good as well. It sets the scene.”

I loved the ending of this show, I love the look of the beast you see at the end, it's all quite terrifying and was well drawn.

After we finished watching the show, our task was to draw a frog monster, I thought it would be a cool and funny idea to draw a normal-looking frog that is the size of a house. I gave it little sharp teeth with Wert and Gregory looking up at him in the dark woods.

I love this art piece, it's kinda funny yet terrifying and I am very proud of it.

PS4 DVD Cover

For today's session, I wanted to make a PS4 DVD case for my game. The first thing I did was grab a template of a PS4 DVD case from Google classrooms that our teacher put on. I then opened the image in procreate and created a layer under the DVD case and then started to work on the cover. I knew the cover I made before isn't the right size for this DVD case so I decided to get the font cover I have made prior and took out bits and pleased it, I then placed it under the DVD cover. The thumb was a little off so I tried to fix it, I think I did a pretty good job, if I was to go back, I would fix the hand placement on the phone, the way they are holding it looks a little unnatural. I then made the background a plum red colour and put in noise behind the phone, I then put in the total and then the front cover is all complete. I really like how this is turning out so far.

For the rest, I put in the title on the spin of the cover and then started on the back cover. I put in the classroom background I made and placed in damages that I made of what the game will look like when you play. I also put in a small mysterious blurb in a white box.

I really like how this looks, it looks a little messy however I think it would look really cool if I saw it in person.

Danganronpa

Danganronpa is a visual novel horror game. I am obsessed with this franchise and I have been for a very long time now, I do know that it has his clause but at the same time I love mystery and detective work, murder crime scenes and even romance. 

This game is about a group of students or people in general, all different types of people with different goals and wants in life. They are all trapped in a school with a black and white teddy bare called Monokuma. This bare is keeping them captive and the only way they can leave and live, they would have to murder someone and if they don't get caught or figured out, then they can leave, killing everyone in the building apart from you, but if you do get figured out, they you are the one killed.

This game you play as Makoto Naegi a high school student from Japan. You get to know everyone and their personality, start to make bonds and friendships. One night you wake up and find one of your friends dead in the shower, you  will have to investigate the crime scene. After a few minutes, the trial begins and you and the rest of the character will have to come together to find out who the murderer is. You will look at the facts and information you have to figure it out, once you have all of the characters votes for who it is, the decision on who will be the one to die will be made. If the person the majority voted for is the murderer, then that person will die. 

The way they die is very traumatising for the character and you, they will die through the thing they love most. These deaths are seen through cut scenes, you don't play their death. If they like games, you will watch the character trying to survive dodging tetras pieces until they are squared to death by one. There is even one we're a character loves bace ball so their death is violently being hit by bace balls over and over and over again until they draw their last breath. These death are too torment and betray the character who committed at the crime and sometimes you feel bad for them because they have their reasons for wanting to leave.

This goes on until you are left with 2 or 3 characters and then you start going for the mastermind of this prison.

This game is very fun to play, I love how detailed and different the art is and I love the character growth and the characters themselves. I love the investigation parts and how you figure out who the murderer is. I love how this is a visual novel and still has some mini games were you have to get used to different game play. Most of the game is a visual novel however when ever you want to talk to another character, you can move around the place because the school is 3D modelled which is just great.

I would love to make my game have a similar mechanic where you can walk around or have a top down mini game sometimes. maybe I can make the characters what something and you have to go round your house or school to get it for them, making them like you even more. this would be very fun to make. 

I chose this to research because it is a horror visual novel that I really enjoy, the mechanics and the way you play is very unique and interesting at the time, I feel my game would be a little boring if it was just a visual novel I want there to be something more to my game that make them want to play.

One thing about this game is the story. It can be quite confusing to why the mastermind would want to do this and how they got the power to how they did this all. They also mention the end of the world but this doesn't make much sense sometimes, hence why I'm not explaining it. 

I love this game quite a lot and my game is quite inspired by this game and I can't wait to see what my game becomes.

Troll Hunter Review

For today's session, we watched a movie called Troll Hunter. This movie was very interesting, I quite liked the story, sound design the settings, however, the characters were the only thing that was lacking. For a movie like this, great characters aren't really important because this movie is trying to focus on the tense parts of the movie.

I quite enjoyed it, especially the tense parts and whenever a troll came on screen. Visually the trolls looked kinda off, it's probably because this movie is quite old and it's low budget however the sound design was magnificent. Listening to I just sends fear to your brain. It's just amazing how well done the sounds that the troll makes are. However, sometimes it does sound like a husky, howling into a mike and they auto-tuned the sound to be slower which causes the sound to lower itself too.

This is what I said on the review sheet:

“This movie is quite cool. I like how they made it seem serious and scary and tense without the use of music, however, the sound design is still very good even though there is hardly any.

The characters are decent, they are just normal people getting scared.

The locations are also quite good. This movie reminds me a lot of Sirenhead.

It's very cool that their movie was made by University students.

This movie can be quite boring at times.”

In the review sheet I talk about how this movie reminds me of Siren Head. Siren Head is a famous creamy pasta monster that gained a lot of popularity between 2019 - 2020. Siren head was a fictional character made by a guy who is known a lot for his scary photoshop images of scary monsters he has created. When he created Siren Head, and gave a description on what it dose and how it will kill you, this monster became unbearably popular, creating a lot of comics and games using the monster as a concept.

Siren Head is a long and slender man, as tall as the forest trees, his body blending into the trees so he can’t be seen easily at first. His head is made of multiple Sirens, these sirens can mimic the sound of formalist voice you know and will lure you to your death. The sirens also connect to many radio stations and sometimes even create the classic siren sounds which is loud and echoes through the forest. This monster reminds me of the trolls because of how tall the trolls were and seeing the trees move in the back to show that the troll is walking towards you, reminds me of how siren head would walk around if he was chairing you when he grew tired of you not falling for his games.

I also talked that in this movie, it got quite blaring. To be honest this movie was hard to watch for me, I don’t know if that was because I was too busy with other work to focus or it was quite boarding at times. But from what I could hear and see with a few glances, it was quite interesting at times.

Character Poses

I wanted to see all of these characters in their poses together. They all look so alive and happy as if they are all real people with thoughts and feelings, which is very cute to me. I feel like their personalities come across very well in these poses and I can't wait to see them in the game one day.

It's strange how they all look like good friends already. I can't wait to get started on making the game one day.

Game & Movie Ratings

For today, I wanted to research movie and game ratings so I can understand which one should be on my game and also understand the difference between them all.

The images at the top are the ones used for games. Pegi is a famous rating company that works around games only, they are well known since they are mentioned on the cover of games and at the start of every game advertisement online. ESRB is also another famous company that works around games, however, they don't have specific numbers on them to say which ones are for what age. However, they do mention specifically what the game might contain like E is for Everyone, E 10+ is for Everyone older than 10, T is for Teens, Mature is for 17+ and A for Adults which is 18+. These are quite interesting to me, I feel like they are being quite silent about the ages because they don't want to get into legal trouble, but at the same time who does?

The other rating is for movies, they are colourful and tend to come in different shapes. These all come in different ratings, Uc means it's suitable for preschool children, U means it's suitable for people over the ages of 4, PG means that Parents need to be in the room when kids watch the movie, there might be content that isn't suitable for them just yet but with parental guidance, they can understand and feel safe. Other ratings like 12, 15, 18 just means that they have to be that age or over to watch the movie. R18 means it's a movie that contains sex.

These ratings are quite interesting, I didn't even know that PG was a movie rating until I looked it up. I was about to recommend PG to put on a friends game idea cover until I realized that's a movie rating. After all of this research, I am finally happy that I get to understand each rating for movies and games. It is very useful information and I'm glad I know them.

Pitch Sheet

For today, I made my pitch sheet for my game idea. I was dreading doing this for the project due to how I might a range it because all of the concepts are is all on separate pages and I didn't know how to make that look good.

So for me to make sure this looks good, I looked at examples, I tried to look at some from famous games but google dosn't know what pitch sheets is. So I feel like people just call it something different and my class is just weird and calls it a Pitch Sheet.

I started laying it out by placing the title in the middle of the pitch sheet and then placing outcomes around it, however that didn't look good. I re-did it and thought that I could put the classroom in the back and put down the opacity, this is so I can show it off as a background by making it the background. This is also a way to present it without actually displaying it as an image on the page, this means I have more room for other things to present.

I put the total at the top and some images of the main characters in the story and some of what the gameplay might look like. This is a greater thing to put on there so people know what things might look like during the game. I then put in some text explaining the game's story and then the Pegi rating for the game.

Once done, I didn't like it, it looked like there wasn't enough on the page, I have so many outcomes and they are hardly on there. There isn't even answer to display the core game mechanic.

So I redid it and moved everything to the side. I finally had some room to display more of my work. I chose the game mechanic sheet because that is more important to display that the character sheets.

I like how this turned out, I like how it looks and I can't wait to see it displayed on my slides explaining everything I did for this project.

For today's session, I wanted to make a game cover for a console, because I didn't have a lot of time I couldn't make loads of front covers for each console there is so I just decided to create a Nintendo Switch DVD cover.

Do create this, I needed to look at different games that Nintendo switch has came out with.

Each of these DVDs has two things which are the Pegi rating and the logo of the consul game, they also put the game company in the other corners of the games however since I don't have one, I will just leave that blank. So I went to Google and got images of these ratings and logo. When I got these images I started to put them on my game cover, however, I found out that the game cover I made didn't fit the switch format. If I put the switch logo in the corner, it would have covered up the title of the game.

This meant I had to do a little bit of editing. I ended up editing the title, moving it down so it was in view, however, this meant that the Pegi rating would cover the total which meant it either had to be small or somewhat in the middle of the cover. So to do this I thought I should move up the phone and the image behind the title so the title can't cover one of the girl's faces.

Once done I then was able to put the two images on there, Nintendo switch game covers are very simple, because of just these small amount of things on the case that sugets that it is from the Nintendo switch, however I do quite like this because it gives a lot of space on the case for your game to advertise it's self.

I put on pegi 18 because I feel that, that rating makes sense for the game it is. However, there are many different ratings from pegi and other companies. There is Pegi 3, Pegi 7, Pegi 12, Pegi 16 and the Pegi 18. Sadly a lot of games that come under Pegi 18 are the type of games a lot of grown men play, however, this is a horror game so it won't go down that path. However, it would be quite funny if someone bought it think it was a “special” game but then they play it and it was just not what it seems.

I wanted the game to be Pegi 16 however I feel that rating might cause me problems in the future so I will just make it Pegi 18 just for safety.

I am very happy with how this DVD cover looks, it looks like a real Nintendo switch game which I am very happy about.

For today I wanted to create a thumbnail for my Tumblr blog on this project. I wanted the thumbnail to be the title with something else because that is something I am very proud of. I am very proud of my total because it just looks satisfying and esthetically pleasing to me. So I decided to pick one of the classroom images and put the logo on top of it. I am also very proud of the classroom so I wanted to bring my hard work to the light I'm so happy I made it the thumbnail.

I chose this specific classroom image because I like the pink hue it has to it, I think it matches perfectly with the logo of this game concept.

Animated GIF on Procreate

For today's section, I wanted to use the images I made a while ago and make them into an animated GIF. This is something new to me because Procreate animates a little bit confusingly. On Procreate, each frame is an unhidden layer, so that means you can have multiple layers on one frame, it all has to be one image on each layer to make fame. This can be quite confusing at first but once you get used to it, it works out.

What I did was find out how to animate on Procreate, I found a button called “Animation Assist” if I turn that on, then Procreate’s layout will change so I can animate.

I used a lot of the frames in between to put in different glitching images to make it look like the glitches are moving around the image which I am quite proud of. I also animated the words to make it look like each letter is being typed out whenever a character speaks in the speech box.

I would show you the process of animating if I could, however, it's quite difficult to do a timelapse because it's a bunch of back and forth however I could do screenshots.

This artist is called @enskkt on Twitter. I've been seeing their art around on Pinterest so if I got the artist wrong then I'm sorry, I don't know who made this artwork. This is why I believe made this art and from what I can see they have inspired me and my art, their art is very simplistic and that's what I feel my art is becoming sometimes. I love their art, and I think it has inspired mine a little.

This art style is a bit anime inspired yet simplistic but I love how it inspired my art in how I colour and draw my character, I don't do the Japanese art style that much, well I do, however, I feel mine is a mix between cartoon and anime which is very cool to me. I mean anime is great and well-done art, however, I have to realize that anime and Japanese cartoons are from Japan and I am from England so I should put more western art styles in my work. This is so I can find an art style that I feel is my unique art style.

I'm very proud of how far I have come since I started college and I am so happy I have found my art style or at least a path to the one that is right for me. I feel when you want to find your art style, you should look at different artist you like and dislike and take aspect you like from these artists and use it for your own so then you can create something new.

I love this artist.

Game Concept Images

For today, I wanted to make a Procreate image of what the game might look like sometimes. I got one of my characters and placed them in the middle of the image with the background image behind her. I also then put the speech box and the phone button in front of the character with the opacity down slight. I then put in some generic words to make it seem that the character shown on screen is talking to you, the player.

I then wanted to make it seem that you as the player are seeing reality and your imagination is glitching in and out. I made the character have a scary and insane grin and gave the image a red overlay and made it a little glitchy by using the glitch button and the noise brush that comes with Procreate.

I then made her face bigger, making it look like she is getting uncomfortably close up to you.

I like how these turned out, I love how they display what the game might look like in the future.

Background Gradient Maps

For today's session, I wanted to make the classroom more colourful and vibrant so I thought it would be a cool idea to use the “Gradient Map” button again. All of these different coloured classrooms were made by using the garden maps' colour suggestions. I love how they all look, they look like how the classroom would look at different parts of the day. Like sunset and the morning.

I love that I made the classroom look like this, it now looks and feels more colourful which I love. I can't wait to see it as the background of my game idea.

Game Idea Background

For today I wanted to work on the background. I found a Google image of a Japanese classroom that I quite like and wanted to make the background of the game.

So to do this, I inserted the Google image into Procreate and then once I have I would then find an area that is using one colour, I would select that colour and colour it in the shape the previous colour was in, continue until the whole image is covered in different colours and just looks satisfying to look at. This is how I do my background because they are quite hard for me to do so if I do it this way, I am putting in a lot of time and effort for a good result.

I like how this turned out, it was quite a time-consuming but was very worth it in the end.

Prey Review

Today we watched Prey, a movie I was told that had just been released on Disney+. Now, Disney and I right now do not get along, It is hard to respect them, to be honest, when they released the new Pinocchio and is working on the new The Little Mermaid and lightyear.

I don't like them anymore due to their views on feminists and racism and so much more, they tend to have a level of woke to them which is just sad because they spend time making characters gay but don't work on making them likeable or even a good character. That's what happened in this movie.

This movie is about a girl who is from a family tribe that relies on the town to survive, the main character is a female protagonist that wants to become a hunter and so people allow her for some reason, even though that’s not how people were like back then. Instead of all of the men thinking she was useless from the start they believe that she can do it, mainly her brother but when she is a damsel for two seconds they believe that she is a useless woman that belongs back with the rest of them which in my opinion is unrealistic.

The girl tries to redeem herself by going hunting to prove herself buts ends up falling victim again to a monster that is invisible and out for blood. The girl wants to catch it which the men don’t want because they also don’t believe her but then all of the men die except her because they were around the monster at the time. The girl spends the rest of the movie trying to survive and kill this alien monster who is invisible at times.

The girl ends up killing it in the end with glowing blood all over her and brings its head with her to the tribe. Proving that she is a hunter.

I don’t like this movie, it was quite boring at times and when you see woke feminism/man-hating stuff it just makes me hate it even more. I have no doubt a woman can hunt down an alien but I also don’t believe she can, the entire time I wasn’t rooting for her because she just want interesting or likeable enough for me to care if she died or not.

These are the notes I wrote down on the paper:

“The movie looks and feels good to watch. However, the story and the characters are lacking. For some reason, I am quite bored and I do hate the “woke” this movie has. I don’t like Disney at the moment due to how they have been putting out complete garbage recently, apart from “Encanto”. I am sure that she can kick some butt, however, it feels forced due to Disney making their movies woke to get people to talk about them even if it is in a bad way.

The story is slightly confusing and the alien doesn’t fit at all in the world they are in. I know that is what they are going for but it’s kind of strange to me.”

For the last part of this session, I was given the choice to draw an alien or a triable warrior or both. I chose a triable warrior because that felt more appealing to me, I didn’t want to draw an alien because if I was, I would probably make it cute but that wasn’t the theme of the movie and that didn’t feel right to me so a warrior felt suitable.

I wanted to make her a female warrior because I do like the fact that she was a girl in this movie, however, the delivery in this movie wasn’t great. I wanted to give her short black hair to look more like a Tomboy and make her feel closer to the men so she feels better about herself when she hunts with them. I wanted to give her a skirt with some tassels at the end because that reminded me of Pocahontas and because it looked cool, I also gave her shorts so nothing can be seen underneath. I also gave her an animal skin top acting like bandages but also giving her a one-shoulder strap look. I also wanted to give her markings on her skin to make her look like a warrior. I also made her barefoot because I don’t think shoes were invented back then. And if they were, they would only be worn in the winter, not in the in-between seasons.

I like how she turned out, it was a shame that this movie gave me not much motivation to draw but I still like how she turned out.
