no really I think they would be a really high profile missing persons case, and I love the idea of them being hounded by paparazzi, vulturistic journalists, reporters, the whole ass media circus hunting them down intrigues me.

no but really. Paul was born a generation too early, he was meant to be a woman married to Feyd. what if he was born assigned female, but showed all the signs of growing into a strong and competent young man. trans Paul Atreides adds so many new layers and nuances to the Bene Gesserit fuckery HOW HAS NO ONE THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE

So Paul has that black cloak that he wears for the end of the movie, right? We all know the one.

The first time he has it on is after he wakes up from drinking the Water of Life, in the "we're Harkonnens" conversation with Jessica. He wears it for the rest of the movie.
I never particularly questioned how this cloak showed up on the scene cause like, we get it. It came from the Symbolism Closet. Black is associated with the Harkonnens, sure, but it's also the color of the Atreides formal dress Paul wears in Part One and the color the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother wears. Black is the color of power.
But then I was looking at this production photo from the Part Two art book:

and now I'm obsessed with the idea of the cloak being one of the layers of Jessica's costume--either the dark layer that we can see under the white/gray and brownish fabric, or the layer under that.
Just imagine her wrapping him up in it at some point, as he's recovering from being mostly dead. It's motherly and intimate and it might seem like comfort. But also she's claiming him, because she won. Giving him one layer of the many many layers of fabric that she's wearing by the end, isolating her from everyone else. Literally putting the mantle of power on his shoulders and making it look like love.

Realized something abt Dune Part 1. The scene when Paul first uses the voice at the breakfast table. Only our second scene with him in it and the first time we hear him speak. The camera cuts around to create suspense while he's building up to do it, and one of the things it lands on - twice I believe - is that fucking bullfighter painting. Which seems random if you don't know the lore about that, and a few scenes later when it's explained the earlier insert shots have probably already been forgotten about. But the bullfighting motif/metaphor. Arrogance that leads to self destruction, not wanting to be like your ancestors, choosing self indulgence over duty, believing yourself to be indestructible. The very first time Paul is shown demonstrating any kind of power - the voice - and they cut to that. This is our introduction to the main character. Between that and what loads of other people have mentioned already with Chani's opening narration ("who will our next oppressors be" cutting immediately to our first glimpse of Paul), his character arc is basically spelled out within the first few minutes of meeting him. Within two scenes and like 5 lines of dialogue, the movie is already telling us that this harmless seeming little dude is going to become really fucking dangerous, actually.

AU where after the end of House Atreides, Bene Gesserit had Paul join their cult. His first mission is to create alliances with Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha, the new lord of Arrakis. They shouldn't trust the boy whom they killed his father to do such an important task but Paul still did an incredible job—maybe even more than what they asked him to do, as Feyd doesn’t even hesitate when he marches his army to war with the imperium. With Harkonnen’s and Atreides’s soldiers following his will as one army and Paul by his side as a Truthsayer, soft and round with his heir inside his belly, even the Great Houses wouldn’t want to face that. Alliances created after centuries of being enemies are the most terrifying thing after all.

Hot fandom discourse take but framing dark content as only being acceptable if its a vehicle for exploring personal trauma is just giving ground to the puritan segments of fandom.
Simply liking dark content for its own sake is perfectly fine.
