another dante headcanon i posted a thread for on twitter and so i'm copy pasting here because it needs to be here

workaholic dante makes me feel a type of way so i must yell

i also really enjoy the workaholic dante a lot and it's something i'm genuinely surprised isn't adopted by the fandom because it's something i've picked up immediately if the very concept of dantes notes is not proof enough to show just how devoted to their job they are.

dante literally has nothing more to their name than this position, and i've had a lot of experience being witness to i guess people still making the assumption that dante is new or inexperienced with the sinners when i feel like… coming off of canto three, they'd start immediately reflecting massively. if they make a mistake its because it's genuinely something out of their control, unfamiliar to them, and something they have no prior knowledge of.

i also think dante would not take lightly to fucking up because more than anything don quixote situation was a massive wake up call. the ending of the dungeon was like being splashed in the face with ice cold water. they do not want to disappoint their sinners, they do not want to disappoint vergilius even more so. the whole nest situation further amplifies this. the whole conversation with sinclair was them owning up to the fact that they as a manager have not BEEN enough and genuinely that following this they would be on things 24/7.

i think its why they dont sleep. its why i have so many headcanons around the fact that thanks to the clockhead they can stay up longer than any other average person should be able too but dante still pushes it until mentally theyre bricked or they physically cannot stand to not sleep. the bus is constantly on the move. the downtime they have between working and not working is so limited that they FEEL the need to make use of what free time they have to further better themselves, their knowledge of everything but most notably combat and the best way to make use of sinners ids. of egos. understanding how they fight, how they function. understanding that if they corrode what happens or how to deal if one were to die. they feel they need to be prepared for every given situation because they think of it as that DIRE.

AND I want to talk about the additional of: why dante never asks questions outright to sinners. they do not want to look incapable or like they have no idea what theyre doing in the eyes of said people. i think with verg or faust, there's more leeway. i think if it's a conversation thats naturally just talking about these things and they chime in it doesn't count. but approaching people directly? asking them specifically questions? they can't, they don't want too, because in their mind there's that paranoia of "will they be disappointed again if i didn't know this much?" "will they feel like they cant rely on me?" so they dont. it's why they listen and pay attention as much as they can to pick up on the most semblance of ANY detail to write it down. its why they make silly little *idk what this means, i'll add more info when i find out!!!!!

(you had , at one point , labeled yourselves comrades . right ? that was you … right ?) body pulls itself upright , a hand ghosting across lone horn blossoming from snow-born locks . more monster than blade . more man than demon . it tangles itself between limbs , breathing his name into what minimal space remains between bodies damned by time and war . “ the sun is rising. “ ( I'll have to leave again. ) it remains an unspoken yet undeniable fact . leaving is what it does best . (you'll try and kill me again.) lashes lower , the edge of wintry hue brushing neck where face has decided to bury itself; as if he would , somehow , find a way to stop the hands of the clock . “ send me off with a smile ? just this once. “ / hi onimaru, // @beloven

he's not asleep yet not quite all present either.  red eyes are pierced directly into the pale flesh of it's face. he knows what comes because what else must it be then that? lips are pressed further into a thin line as a deep inhale followed.  it's not the time nor place to be resisting, to retaliate but he does.  for now.  legs are entwined with it's,  bounding it closely for what moments of dawn the oni could savor.  beyond these walls that surround them are they two countering forces but within is when onimaru is able to savor it.   to love the monster that he must slay is a very fitting fate for this blade of his.

it's almost poetic the way these hands that reach for it's face will be the very same hours from now that will try to strip it of its life.  marus' hands reach to cup its' face,  thumb taking to its' cheek and letting it stroke against the soft flesh.  "i'm listening,  tsuru."  his own voice is relaxed more,  still gruff but not possessing it's usual sharp & raucous cadence.  the hold isn't one that lasts long ... it was a simple yearning to hold it one last time, you know?

with a slow pull away does he give a knowing nod.  he can't bring himself to meet its' gaze as the singular thought crossed his mind.   i've come to loathe watching the sun rise...  all it makes think of is your departure,  and the fact that one day you too will disappear beyond the horizon of that sun to never return.  i'll be plagued by that blossoming light for the rest of my life, tsurumaru.  but he never speaks it,  and he never will.  "you always know how to ingratiate yourself with me,"  and a sharp pause. "and, quite frankly,  it's unfair."  his voice is quieter than before. a near breathy whisper as he gazes upon that face for one last time.

onimaru falls into a silence. pondering over the fact he suddenly had to smile.  it was never easy for him to pull those lips into a smile. nothing ever made him want to smile—   not until it.

"don't make this easy for me,  tsuru."     i love you,   i'll love you so much it's only natural i have to be the one to put you down.

They stand here in pure shock,  not budging from the hold of the long haired male who simply seems to be having a jolly time. Clutching their clock between his hands gently for once instead of the otherwise aggressive hold Argalia took prior times.  ﹤You're a mystery to me.  ﹥ To think the one peppering their face with all kinds of kisses was the very one who put them through a special kind of emotional turmoil & pain. 

Truly! Dante doesn't know what to do with themselves other than to stand here and take it.  Were they someone starved for the touch and wants of a kiss from others? Maybe??? They haven't really thought about it but ... they weren't sure what it was about the color fixer that was giving a feeling of satisfaction with receiving the attention.

They did drop their head down a bit, enough to see where their hands went. Dante fumbled with their PDA tablet as average paced ticks filled the air.  "I'm confused... do you like me or do you hate me?"

The sentiment of sharing a piece of gum shouldn't have been as touching as it felt. The first reason was the most obvious; They were incapable of eating.  The second reason? The person doing it of all the sinners is Heathcliff, whom they simply gaze up at in a minute of shock. Had they not been as aware as they were, they probably would've taken the gum.

﹤I— I don't need too,  I mean... I do have a clockhead with no obvious input for a mouth but I vaguely have come to realize I don't need the same kind of sustenance your body does to survive.  ﹥

However, Dante rubs the back of their clock with their hand.  ﹤But... have you only eaten the gum today? If so you should get some actual food in you. ﹥

What exactly did this city have in the air for people to be like this? Was it hard to wake up and not choose violence? The heels of the shoes slid against the floor underneath their feet, reeling in instant panic at the hand which did not hesitate to grab arguably one of their most sensitive parts of their face.

The minute hand is only intending to do what it's made too,  move for every time they were trying to tick but the wheels in their head are caught. The hand is unable to progress and Argalia is only grasping it harsher, pulling it back a length that such device unintended it to be. Had they been just a clock they would've suffered less represscusions but for Argalia to be toying with something connected to nerves is an entirely different matter at play.  ﹤Is it hard to have manners? Can't even start with a hello, how are you? We're going straight for you putting your hands on me?!﹥

The further the pressure applied the more intense & sharp pain shot throughout their head,  and traveled into their body.

Some broken ticks were inevitable as the grunts of pain couldn't be prevented. They didn't want to be here, why were they forced into this situation? The one time the sinners decide to step out. If it kept on like this ... Didn't it mean something terrible could happen?

Would reaching for the wrist grabbing them be wise? What if in the fight of it, the other accidentally snapped their hand off? Dante winces,  body flinching notably. Anything was better than letting this go on any further even if the risks of an actual injury were at bay.  ﹤A bit more? I think you've poked around plenty enough! There's nothing here for you to see.﹥  They disregard their warning. Moving an arm to take hold of the wrist as they struggled notably against, pushing it away as another hand pried their minute hand from the fingertips of an actual devil himself.

Unfortunately, such comments made their head speed up in their attempts to tok-tok-tok out the sudden moment of embarrassment from Argalia spewing quite literally whatever obscene thing he wanted. Was it really the time for Dante to take a detour to rebuttal such claims coming from the white haired male who couldn't even understand what they had to say about whether or not their guide is doing something with them? No, but they certainly were!

It was important that they clear the air that Vergilius had never done anything more to them. Actually! Argalia even beats Vergilius in the realm of how much they've been touched by him. Dante sure did want something but it stopped there; at their own wants.  ﹤W-  why even mention him? What does he have to do with this!﹥ 

And then it clicks.

They've heard of Argalia once before.  Vergilius was in a terrible mood after they woke up after fainting from reviving too many sinners. Someone filled him in that he had to deal with someone called "the blue reverberation" from one of the sinners. Dante can connect the dots,  mostly because Argalia wore a lot of blue. Did it nesscarily mean it was the same person? No... but with this fixation on Vergilius of all things it made sense.

Why were they getting caught up in Color Fixer beef?

Dante would prefer not to particularly have their head broken over the fact some guy wanted to get a rise out of Vergilius! 

For people who were meant to be strong and wise,  they truly behaved more on par with impenitent children that wanted to kick and throw fits over the most stupid reasons.

With the extra strength they have, they snap the wrist back and move to cup the minute hand from being plucked again. Sure, it cost them half an eyes worth of vision but whatever to put a momentary halt to this unnesscary fued. 

The ticks felt less rushed but more intense. Dante even let out a blast of hot air,  followed by a loud horn sounding that of like an angry buzz. ﹤If it's Vergilius you want, why are you coming for me?﹥

and once more, i'll give a reminder that dante is nonbinary and uses solely they/them pronouns.

eventually, i'll delve further into this in a headcanon post about how they perceive themselves and gender but i follow canon, they've only ever used they/them so please refrain from using gendered pronouns or terms (things like dude, guy are fine but anything else nono!)
