Austin laughed, swiftly handing over a beer to the brunette. “I can already predict my future. Either being hit on by creepy women or being a miserable bastard on the fourth of July. Scary how accurate I am, right?”
Tumblr media
Alexis shrugged as she began to turn the other way. “Sounds like you’re a miserable bastard either way, if that’s the case. And if that’s the only couple of possibilities you can think up, maybe that’s because you prefer it that way.” It sounded good, but it felt like garbage. All Alexis was doing was regurgitating yet another rendition what people had said to her over the years. But maybe it would stick with him better than it would with her. Either way, she didn’t plan on sticking around long enough to find out.

Recognizing the brunette from his ordeal at the bar, Austin laughed. “Yeah, I suppose we did. I should probably learn, hm?” Austin poked fun at himself, fetching himself another beer. “You’re like some life advice guru that appears out of nowhere, has anyone told you that?”
Tumblr media
“No.” They didn’t. Probably because Alexis’s advice was typically far from good. “But if you hand me another one of those, I can probably, like, read your palm or something else useful and guru worthy.”

“Oh,” Nora retracted her hand, feeling awkward when the woman didn’t return the gesture. Her fingers began to fiddle with the straps on her handbag as she listened to the brunette explain her situation. “It’s my mother’s. She choreographs the routines. I just help teach lessons.” Nora would never claim to have the same level of talent as her mother, but she was gladdened to hear the woman had taken an interest in the recitals. Ballet was such a beautiful art form. She wished more people shared in her fascination. “You don’t dance anymore?”
Tumblr media
Alexis was vibrating with rage, but that had become so normal an occurrence in her life that she didn’t notice it anymore. It wasn’t anyone’s fault that the entire course of her life had been altered and she’d been reduced to a bitter stump of the passionate ballerina she’d once been, but that didn’t make it any easier a pill to swallow, even all these years later.
Tumblr media
“No. I don’t.” She answered curtly, not meaning to be rude. “But not by my own free will. Your mother’s shows are the closest I’ve gotten in years.” She stared at the young woman and took a deep breath before sighing wistfully, “You have no idea how lucky you are.”

“True.” Could Ari argue with that? “Oh my god, that’s the worst.” Ari just remembered her latest drunken hook-up. The guy was ugly as a sin, she didn’t even want to think about it. “I can overlook things when I am shit faced.” Maybe she should give that a try, being drunk all the time, maybe she could be in a serious relationship then. “I get what you are saying but I am tired of that. I just want to be in a decent relationship.”
Alexis gave one long nod in understanding. Sure, she hated it, the idea of women being so dependent on men that they got hung up on the mere concept of them. But would she be lying if she said she’d never worn those shoes herself? Well, it was a good thing she was a good liar.
“Maybe try Plenty o’ Fish?” Alexis suggested halfheartedly, disguising her attempt at a joke thinly behind an insincere smile. “What’s the Jesus warrior one? Christian Mingle? Those sound like places people who are serious about decent relationships go, right?”

Alex couldn’t have stopped the look of horror from crossing her face even if she had wanted to. “Your– your brother.” Hearing River’s name was like a slap in the face, one that she had crossed the country to escape. It was the surprise of seeing Alexis here, in Calderwood, that had made her so difficult to place, because it wasn’t as if she hadn’t looked up River’s sister. It was natural to look up the family of the person that had tried to get you wrapped up in a murder case and mob activities. It was just that she didn’t expect to see Alexis at her job.
“I didn’t…” Her protest that she hadn’t known that Alexis was here trailed off. In the flurry of packing up her life, she couldn’t remember why she had chosen Calderwood of all places. Maybe Jana had mentioned it and Alex had assumed it was just a nice vacation town, or maybe she had seen it on Facebook and subconsciously filed it. Either way, it didn’t seem fair that just as she was finding her rhythm here, she should have to deal with this. “I’m sorry,” she said, even though she knew that words didn’t mean much. “I’d be pissed too. I didn’t know you were here.”
Tumblr media
“Obviously,” Alexis deadpanned. She let silence lapse between them before she spoke again.

“Don’t you have a law degree or something? What are you working here for?”

Impatient fingers drummed on her leg as she was waiting in line at one of the many food vendors. Harper was well aware of the numbers the event had drawn in but that didn’t stop her from suffering from hanger.
“How long does it take to order a burger?” Harper spoke to herself but purposely loud enough for the person in front of her to hear. “Jesus Christ, we’re all gonna starve by the time this asshat makes a choice.”
Tumblr media
“Yep, now I’m remembering why I order in on the weekends.” Alexis had somehow managed to keep her complaints to herself until now, but hearing someone else voice them was more than enough reason for her to rip the tape off her mouth. “Tourists and commuters everywhere. Gotta love it.”

“Maybe I’m just getting old but surely there’s a way I can celebrate the fourth without getting drunk?” Austin said, looking at the beer in his hands that he had finished. “But I feel too young to start hosting BBQs. I’m in a limbo.”
Tumblr media
“Most people just get drunk at barbecues anyway,” Alexis supplied without looking up. She flipped through the newspaper someone had carelessly abandoned until she was bored with it, only then chancing a glance at the current company. “I thought we determined last time I saw you that parties weren’t your sort of deal anyway.”

“What would that make you, my juicy seedless grape?” Jana filled in the fruity blanks after reading off a label, grabbing a bunch for Liam to snack at.
Tumblr media
“We can’t all be grapes,” Alexis hummed in a Liam-friendly voice. “Maybe a fuzzless peach. I shave, after all. More than necessary. Mostly because my body makes more hair than is humanly necessary, so--- Peach theory solidified.”

“I mean I would love to meet for love but that’s very unlikely.” Even Ari wasn’t that naive to think you could find the love on Tinder. “I’d love to find someone to hook up with but all these guys seem…” She stopped to search for the nicer word. “Weird.”
Tumblr media
“I mean, everyone’s weird when it comes to sex,” Alexis shrugged. Was it true? Maybe yes, maybe no. “What’s weirder is usually what you find out outside the bedroom. Or, like, not as easy to overlook. Y’know, ‘cause it’s a night, versus eternity.”
Tumblr media
“So I guess I’m saying you should make sure you’re looking through your hookup goggles, not your future hubby goggles.”

Despite the unforeseen events of this morning throwing a wrench in her schedule, Nora still had plans to drop by her mother’s ballet studio before it closed. Sunday nights were her favorite time to practice, just after all the other dancers had gone and she had the place to herself to unravel after a long weekend. The thought alone left her feeling earnest as she waited for the florist to return, her attention soon being drawn to another person in the shop.
Nora had the woman in front of her pegged as a stranger, but she’d been wrong about these kinds of things before. “Uh, yes.” Her voice came out a bit tentative, unable to recall where and if the two had ever crossed paths. “I apologize. I’m not very good with faces. You’ll have to remind me where we’ve met.” A nervous laugh escaped her as she slid her handbag to her elbow, extending a hand in the other woman’s direction. “I’m Nora,” she said politely.
Tumblr media
“We haven’t met,” Alexis said without thinking, but even once the implications had crossed her mind, she ignored them and continued boldly. “I’ve seen you at the recitals. I guess you could say I’m a fan.” God, she sounded like such a fucking loser. Her expression faltered at the thought. Swallowing hard, she continued. “I used to dance. I didn’t know there was a studio in the area before I moved here.”

Sundays at the office had become routine for Nora ever since she came to work for her friend’s event planning business five years ago. It was a time for her to catch up on emails and look forward into the coming week’s big venues. What she hadn’t accounted for was the long-winded voicemail left to her earlier that morning from a client who’s wedding was set for two weeks from now. Nora spent the next 20 minutes on the phone with an emotional bride-to-be, jotting down a grocery list of demands to be executed before the appointed date. Being one of Vivian’s more lucrative clients, she knew she had a lot of work ahead of her to fix the problem, but wouldn’t allow that to ruin her good mood.
After a few calls to various sellers, Nora was able to negotiate the price to fit within the woman’s budget. She stuck a post-it note on her computer, reminding herself to find a use for 500 white hydrangeas, as the bride now wanted roses instead and it was too late to cancel the order. She ended up leaving the office at a decent hour, opting to pass by Clary Street to sort out the current flower situation. It was too late to order from the same vendor so she’d have to shop with a local florist. Sliding her phone into her purse after texting a quick update to Vivian, she opened the glass door to the shop and stepped inside. The owner was arranging a bouquet of tulips as Nora greeted them with a smile. She was unsure of how to pose such a tall order, but she’d try her best.
“This might seem like an absurd request, but I need an arrangement of 500 white roses by next Friday and I was hoping you would be so kind as to help me? Price isn’t an issue, but I’m sort of in a tough spot with my client and I’d make sure you were well compensated for your…” she glanced down at the bouquet of flowers, which were actually quite lovely, “unique skill set.” In business, most people often used flattery as a means to an end, but in Nora’s case she was being genuine.
Tumblr media
Alexis knew determination when she heard it, and this girl certainly had it. Whatever she was putting together was likely far and away more important than the bouquet of welcome flowers she’d come to put together for her sister-in-law of sorts. She was happy enough to step aside and do some more research of her own while the most recent customer to have set the jingling bells on the door off had her way with the eager worker behind the desk.
It was as she’d stepped aside that she caught a glimpse of the woman’s profile. Instantaneously, she felt her mouth shrink into a nervous pucker. Alexis didn’t know her name, but she recognized her. She’d been unable to stay away from the local dance studio’s recitals---hell, she’d been to every one that year, sitting in the back of the theater with her arms crossed as both jealousy and pride exuded from her with every step the young dancers took. She knew the woman was involved somehow---a teacher? An advanced student? An over-involved parent? Irregardless of her connection, the thought alone put Alexis into a cold sweat.
When the worker walked into the back, Alexis took hold of her opportunity. She cleared her throat a little too loudly and spoke at a pitch just a little too high.
“Excuse me? You work at the dance studio, right?”

“Can’t meet anyone at a bar, can’t meet anyone on any of these goddamn dating apps—” Ari started, sitting down at an empty bar stool and crossing a leg over her knee, her eyes staring at her phone’s screen. “I mean, it had to be easier back in the day, right?” She sighed, reaching for her drink and downed it in a single gulp. It was time to get drunk, clearly this night wasn’t going anywhere.
Tumblr media
Alexis welcomed Ari’s presence with an amused grin. “Guess it depends,” she replied, cradling her drink in her hand as she shifted her weight to face the new addition to her night on the town. “Are you meeting for love or for a fuck? ‘Cause one’s always been easy, and one’s always been hard, and I don’t think iPhones have changed either.”

Alex’s first, totally inexplicable thought was that she was about to get served some kind of papers. It wasn’t often that someone called her by her full name in that kind of tone, and the way that the last five years had gone, it didn’t seem impossible that somehow River had found a way to come back from whatever situation he was currently in to somehow pin something on her after all. A second look allowed her to calm down somewhat, as it was obvious that the woman wasn’t here in any kind of official capacity.
“Er…” Alex looked at the obviously drunk woman in front of her, trying to place her. She looked familiar, but after working in a bar for six months, a lot of people in Calderwood looked vaguely familiar. Alex was fairly certain she hadn’t been officially introduced to her, whoever she was. Part of her was tempted to play it off as a case of mistaken identity, but if she knew her name, then that wasn’t going to work. Instead, she shook her head, apologetic look on her face. “I’m sorry, but I don’t. Have we met?”
Tumblr media
Alexis was too tired to be angry anymore---a rare feat for someone who was typically fueled by their own illogical, self-imposed rage. With a huff, she sat the full weight of her body on the bar stool and rested her forehead in her hands. Finally, she looked up, the only shred of anger left in her visible in the corners of her bitter grin.
Tumblr media
“River’s my brother. And truth be told, I’m kinda pissed you didn’t look me up when you moved into my town and disrupted my escape plan.”

“Hey, whatever makes you feel better about yourself.” Beauty was a curious thing. You could stand in front of the most gorgeous looking woman and then - they opened their mouth and out came the dumbest shit you’ve ever heard in your life and all that beauty starts to look distorted. Like a Pablo Picasso painting. He supposed it worked both ways. A lot of people have commented how his attitude made him look unattractive sometimes. Maybe if he cared about other people’s opinions this would concern him but it didn’t. Contrary to popular belief, he was not an asshole 100 per cent of the time. There were moments where he was actually chill and charismatic, someone you actually wanted to be around. It was a luck of the draw though. Cameron was just prone to mood swings and those who knew him where already used to it. To others, it came like quite the shock. “Yeah, one day - if he’s lucky.” He chuckled, taking out a small treat from his pocket to give it to Ruckus. “So, are you always a bitch or is this a special occasion? Should I be flattered?”
Tumblr media
No, she was always a bitch. At first, it used to upset her to hear it, but now, Alexis had gone so far down the rabbit hole of denial for the sake of self preservation that the comment only made her smile slyly, as if she was enjoying an inside joke with her best friend. Confront the reasons she was always bitter and blunt beyond the point of flaw? Never.
“Kind of sounds like you want to be,” Alexis grinned. “I can’t be the first person you’ve ever met who doesn’t like to be bothered.”

“The fuzzy, mini peaches. Like, who would have thought a trip across the country would bring me more of a different fruit.”
Tumblr media
“Ooh, there’s a double meaning there. That’s deep for me.”
Alexis finally looked at Jana, her face contorted into an expression of confusion. Peaches were fuzzy. Weren’t they? “California’s mostly known for its raisins, though. So, like, dead fruit. How’s that for a double meaning?” She nodded her head proudly as she gazed around the grocery store. “Some real phoenix shit right there. You’re a pruney little grape come back to live her best life.”

Astrid had a problem with her defiant impulse, and even the pretense of denying herself was enough to make her want to rebel horribly. Sure, the restrictions were entirely self-imposed, and all part of a harebrained scheme fueled by stubbornness alone, but the only reason people even put stock in her charade was because society had dictated that she was precisely the kind of ‘basic white girl’ who would engage in such rituals. And that, quite frankly, was utter bullshit…
Astrid squinted, making as though she were deliberating the merits of the suggestion quite seriously. “You almost lost me at gluten-free, but you made up for it with extra cheese…” ‘Gluten-free’ at least sounded like restraint, and would make it harder for people to hold it against her. “I’m sold. That’s what I’ll have,” she decided. “Although you are making that burger look damn good…”
Tumblr media
Already halfway into another bite, Alexis’ eyes widened. She held up a finger and sped along her chewing. Chompity chomp chomp, she sang in her head, cocking her head to a different side with each word, until, finally--- “It’s vegan. Except for maybe the cheese. Trust me.” She gripped both sides of her burger as she scoped it out, selecting the perfect spot to take another delectable bite, seemingly oblivious to the large circle of ketchup at the corner of her mouth. “You don’t want this bad boy.”
Tumblr media
“Do you think there’s such a place as vegan fro-yo in a place like this?” Leave it to Alexis to still not know anything about her town a year into moving there. Or at least to pretend she didn’t know anything about it, as if it was really as beneath her as she portrayed. This time, though, she was sincerely looking for an answer. “Maybe normal sprinkles though. I don’t know how those would taste otherwise.”

Cameron caught up with Ruckus, who was now sniffing around a pair of long legs that were attached to a brunette with what could only be described as a resting bitch face. Sometimes you really didn’t know with people and appearances could be deceiving. Sometimes, you came across someone with a friendly face who turned out to be a complete asshole or the other way around. She looked annoyed but it was not until she opened her mouth and spat out her words that Cameron realized that her facial expression matched the attitude. To her defense, Ruckus did just try and slobber her face but Cam still did not appreciate the snappiness in her tone. Not one bit. See, he could be a nice guy until the universe decided to put him face to face with someone who got on his bad side. You could not blame the guy for being a jerk then, right? “Did you just call me pathetic?” He had to chuckle, reaching over to grab Ruckus by the collar and tug him away from the girl. “Ruckus, calm down - sit.” The dog dropped on the sand at the command. “That’s funny, coming from someone covered in dog spit.”
Tumblr media
With slits for eyes, Alexis propped herself up, shaking the sand off her hands. “I think it’s more like I asked, but I’ll take that deflection as an admission of guilt.” Alexis grabbed her beach towel and dabbed at her face until she was satisfied that the slobber was gone. She replaced it with another small squirt of suntan lotion, and then reached out to pat the dog on the head. “Don’t worry, sweetie. One day you’ll find someone on your level.”
