Artist Statement Project 4
Not everything is always as it seems. in my piece “Strange Paradise” Beautiful and not so pretty origami flowers are arranged across two canvases. A drip acrylic paint designs the background canvas. Depending on how you decide which flower you want to smell, the person smelling will either receive something sweet or sour. I wanted to create something fun, where they might not expect to smell a foul smell from something beautiful. And, vice versa, something good from the not so pretty flowers. The set up is something like a strange fantasy with strange flowers that look pretty innocent.

Concept Statement Project 4
For my Installation project I plan on creating a “bush” full of hand made paper flowers adhered to a canvas. There will be ugly and beautiful flowers and the audience will be given the chance to choose a flower to pick and smell. The flowers will be filled with either a good or bad smell creating a reaction either pleasant or unpleasant. There may also be a projection of blooming and dying flowers. I was also considering including a sound element of either nature or quirky noises. The piece will basically confront judgement of which flower a person will choose based on looks.

Reading 4: “Wake Up and Smell Your City”
Quote:“She remembers the students were initially reluctant about sticking their noses in everything, but soon, many told her that they wanted to continue the project.”
Comment: It’s pretty neat that Tolaas has/is changing peoples thoughts on smell. And, to use our sense of smell more effectively in our daily life. I usually don’t thin too much about it until I smell something I enjoy, like a bakery.
Question: How is Tolaas going to change peoples ‘prejudices’ about foul smells? Aren’t these smells an indicator to something wrong in our environment? What more can our sense of smell offer us than just what it is?

Project 3|Performance Artist Statement
‘Comfort Bubble’ is a representation of me bursting what keeps me from leaving my comfort space. Staying inside this comfort bubble and never leaving it can hold me back from more opportunities in life. Opportunities that can change life for the better . When confronted with popping it, it can be uncomfortable. Stepping outside into the unknown. But once it’s popped a confetti of new experiences and opportunities can arise from the grief of change that first occurred with that change.

Location/environment?
I Will be performing in 199
Audience?
My audience will be the class
Time of Day?
During class time
Props/Clothing?
I plan on creating a mask with multiple sharp objects pointing outwards towards a balloon hanging in front of me filled with confetti. The confetti will represent how you may feel once you stand outside your comfort zone. My clothes will be sort of plain but  colorful.
Action/ How is body being used (is body being used?)
My body will be wandering, swaying, pondering around the balloon, swaying towards the balloon. Building anxiety to burst it with my face.
Is there a sound element? if so, what is it? Why?
I was thinking of either attaching bells of beads to the mask piece to create an ambiance And, them the pop from the ballon. Representing those barriers bursting.
Video?
I will not be recording a video.
Title of piece?
Comfort Bubble
What is your message or what are you revealing with your performance?
My piece basically represents my own “comfort bubble”. And, how it can be hard for me to ‘pop’ or ‘break’ that bubble down, even when it may be holding me back. So breaking the bubble physically as a performance piece is just that, and somewhat stepping outside of it. so physically popping a ballon in front of the class with a mask with sharp objects represents me bursting that bubble.

Reading 3/Performance: A Hidden History
Quote: ”however, performance remains a challenge to art critics and public alike, for it continues to question the basic criteria by which art is evaluated. The stance of performance artists has historically been a radical one: against the establishment (be it art or politics), against the commercialization of art, and against the strict confinement of museums and galleries.”
Comment:Performance art has come a long way from the dadaist and Futurist innovators. it’s a bold act to come face to face with your audience and present a message you believe so deeply in, and perform your art right on the spot. It’s compelling.
Question: When does performance art go too far, or not far enough? What validates a performance piece as a work of art? can it be literally anything? Or does it have to have a message behind it?

PROJECT 2: SUPER CUT VIDEO
Many women put their sense of beauty within their hair. Hair means a lot to some women and if it’s not ‘right’ then they don’t feel beautiful. My video ‘Own it’ shows multiple women with multiple hair types, and styles owning their hair. The process women go through to upkeep what they love is commemorable. it does’t matter what is done to your hair whether you're bare scalped or have colorful locks, as long as you own it and you're content that's all that matters. After all it is just hair. It'll grow back. And, if for some reason it can't just own it. Confidence in oneself matters more than hair.

Time and Motion
Quote:”The Quintet of Remembrance is a cinematic work of a group of five people undergoing a range of emotions while a camera records every nuance of their physical reaction”
Comment: I think the work of Bill Viola with The Quintet of Remembrance makes quite an intriguing piece. The emotions the actors give off to the audience can evoke empathy from the people viewing it. Almost making them become invested and fascinated in the facial changes as time goes on. It makes you wonder why they would feel that way or what the story is behind the emotions.
Question: When it comes to kinetic Art,  are there certain materials that work better than others for movement? Or can anything be used to create Kinetic art?

FINAL CRITIQUE | PROJECT ONE
I decided to juxtapose two time periods in my own life for this project. For my first collage, ‘Let’s Not dwell’  I decided to represent a moment in my life where I experienced thanatophobia( fear or death or death anxiety) for a couple months of my life. It would consume my time, draining my mood and thoughts of life. The collage basically represents how I made it through that tough moment in time and realized I still have a lot of life to live. The grim reaper will always be there waiting, like he is in the background. But, I've learned not to dwell on something I can’t control and focus on more important things in my life. The circle of people represent surrounding myself with people I love. The books stacked on top of the skeletons head represent bettering myself. The balloons show the celebration of life.
For my second collage ‘Untitled’ I decided to represent my vivid dreams. Although I don’t receive these types of dreams every night, they are an escape from reality that I enjoy. In these dreams the atmosphere is so real and feels as if it’s another life or reality. The tree and moon don’t really have any deep meaning or connection with anything other than to aid with surrealism, which is why I also used bright colors also used in the first collage. My cat Adisa who I've dreamed of before has a third eye, sort of representing entering this different realm. A shape shifting human swirls above her head representing aspects of the  freedom in my dreams and my capability to fly.

Project 1 Concept Statement
For this project of juxtaposing two moments in time i plan on doing a collage of moments in time where I've had vivid dreams for an extended period of my life and the affects it’s had on my life. For my second collage I plan on doing the affects of death anxiety and how it has impacted my life and how I've overcome it.

Exercise 1B Disappearing Acts
1. What happens to the composition once the person, place or thing is removed? Does the narrative change?
Once Alice is removed it does seem less complete. The whole movie is about her on an adventure after all, so the narrative does change a little bit.
2. How much does visual context support the subject?
I believe it is easy to tell the missing person within the images is Alice. By the things that surround her, everything shows the stories background. So even though she’s not there the visual context of cards, other characters to the story and the settings gives enough clues.
3. Is this work conceptually stronger as a series?
The work is conceptually stronger as a series because they all support each other and create a story.

The Function of the Studio (when the studio is a laptop) -Caitlin Jones
Comment: “post studio” really broadens an artists creativity through art. So many new tools are accessible to them to create digital art. You can take it wherever you want and work on pieces whenever. I personally like the experience of brushing paint over a canvas but it is fun the experiment and trine things.
Question:From the strain of the eyes, to the countless distracting opportunities to do something else. At what point does a “Post Studio” become too distracting to where you aren’t able to get work done?
Quote:“Thus the studio is a place of multiple activities: production, storage and finally, if all goes well, distribution.”
