Today in Black History month, I'd like to acknowledge Nichelle Nichols. Nichelle was an American actress, singer and dancer notable for her portrayal of Lieutenant Nyota Uhura. Nichelle Nichols portrayal on Star Trek was an inspiration to several black women nerds like Mae Jemisin (one of my personal heroes) and Whoopie Goldberg. Her role on Star Trek was one of the first portrayals of black women featured in a major television series.
