How to write a morally grey character

There are good guys and there are bad guys. But the world is not just black and white and neither are everyone's morals.
What makes someone morally grey?
You could also call it morally ambiguous. They are real people with their own ideas and motivations and the possibility to change their ways when there is enough incentive. They are neither pure good, nor pure evil.
Which just makes them human and to an extend that includes everyone. So in fiction, this is often a character that is unpredictable, the reader can't be sure on what side they are on. It could change.
How to create them
decide on a balance between good traits and bad traits
give them understandable motives
give them motivations that would make them work for the good cause and motivations that would make them work for the bad ones
give them a moral compass and a set of rules that they would usually follow
but also give them personal goals that interfer with that
show them having to make decisions that can lead to real consequences
Tips
don't make them overly mysterious, the reader should understand where they are coming from with their decisions
but you can create surprise by giving two good and believable options to choose and make the readers be on the edge of their seat to find out which one they choose
decide between the character making active choices or the character passively letting things happen that puts them in both the good and the bad box
Examples:
A character who sees the good that the hero is doing and wants to support them in saving the city, but doing that would interfer with their personal goal (saving their family for example) - the reader can't be sure which way they will choose
A character is generally doing good things, but when something bad happens, they tolerate it and don't stop it, passively being on the side of evil.

Short Film

This is my short film, definitely made a lot of indecisions, due to putting my efforts into my other projects, as well as feeling the idea was not as good as I wanted it to be. I did try to experiment with 2d stop motion still of animation however I decided it was not for me at the time and felt some push back in confidence. So instead I went back with my original idea of Toon boom or 2d hand drawn. Including a panel style of animating with a drawing software. I do however think I should have expanded on art styles for the panelled animation.
Since I wanted this to be more visual I only kept with piano music for it to be up to interpretation. And to try and work on my story telling and harmony knowledge.
This has made me realise the importance of choosing an idea that you are excited and invested in. As I feel I would of pushed myself further.

Final Design pages
These would have been my final designs for this unit. So I tried my best to make them as realistic as possible.
Th pot/bowl design
Is one of my top 3 of the designs I believe I would have made. Because even though it looks simple and colourfull. Its what i hope it embodies is me and my style with colour. You could say this goes along more with functionality than aesthetics. So therefore I balance it out so that the pattern wouldn’t be to demanding to the eye.
The actual pattern is of my palm lines and based of of my finger prints. The pot image example is how i hope it’s shape would turn out too be, because it’s imperfect just like us and nature although you will as well find patterns within it too. That are just as unique.
I was really inspired by these artists because of what they created. Cristina and her soft pastel exploring her femininity and Niki de saint Nanas and other sculptures of life etc.
The mug
Again similar to the pot/bowl. It’s a functional piece of pottery, with a pattern design. I made two options for the handles, as they both could be used on one or to have two mugs with different handles. Especially since I haven’t tested if they would work, there could be a back up too.
Again I’m trying too keep the pattern simple, but coulourful. As a positive reflection on feminity, age, growth, self and decay. If it were a real piece I would also hope for imperfections, just as we are as humans and nature. For example cracks and uneveness. Again using palm lines, finger prints and fatimas hand for the pattern to help represent this. As i feel i would over complecate the design on a small product. In comparison to a plate.
The glazed I feel compliments this as well. I also hope to make nearly all the designs featured by hand, no moulds or coils. To give its human like imperfections.
The chalice
I based this idea from the holy grail. However since I’m using my focus towards hands as my subject of growth and decay, I thought it could be symbolic too it. And the many who search for eternal life. The root like base represents the connections in our DNA, nature and self history written within us. That grow us towards our final stage of decay.
Unintentionally it was pointed to me that it was similar and maybe as sinister as some fantasy movies. Which I decided too use too help anyone that might look at the page see where all my thoughts come from.
Also the artist’s i feel closely inspired my thoughts for the design, some are dark, most are natural or abstract. And it was very influential for me and all of my designs.
The hands
Thinking back to when I made those bread clay models, also similar to Marc Quinn’s design unintentionally. That was probably the thinking for these two designs.
One is a plant pot, and the other is a jewellery holder mostly for rings. I’ve tried to draw them at different angles, but it didn’t work for the plant pot. As it was not easy to replicate from a birdseye view.
You may also notice that some of my photoshop experiments helped influence the colours and the weirdness of the designs. Along wigh the movies. And it’s reflected by my choice in glazes.
The tree of hands
I had intial done this design before the chalice/holy grail. I was thinking about the life of trees, their sometimes hand like branches, and their rings like finger prints. Also the mythology of the tree of life. I came up with two designs.
My thinking was that if i had to make a tree out of clay with thin branchs it wasn’t gonna work. So instead i made the thicker based tree that would hopefully have hyper realistic details of the hands and the bark. As an inspiration to the intial design.
I as I’m writing this am getting vibes from American horror story a tv series that has similar symbolism.

Topography
It is the study of shape and features of land surfaces. Using this it could refer the area surface shape and features. This is held within the geoscience and planetary science.
It is the recording of relief and terrain, the three dimensional quality of the surface. I have included this into my research because it reminds me of my experiments with pattern using finger prints and palm lines. That the way those lines are made look similar to those I’ve drawn.

Ronit baranga
As suggested to me, this artist has similar works to my subconscious ideas that I had not previously researched for this project. Which is strange because I didn’t intend for such similarities.
Born 1973 in Israel, living and working today. Studied practical art studies, art history and a major in psychology. As well as Hebrew literature. She began working as an artist in clay, and her work has been shown in several group and solo exhibitions around the world.

Ronit, in how far do mouths and fingers resemble activity more than for example ears and eyes?
I gave the tableware organs we use when using it, like hands, which we hold the tableware and transfer it to our mouth. As for your question, I believe fingers and mouths are indeed the most active organs we have. The mouth is a sensory organ which is used both for touch and taste, an opening to the interior of the body, into a physical and metaphorical space. With our mouths we swallow food, breath, speak, express emotions, scream, laugh, smile, sigh, kiss…
Fingers, as well, are active by definition. Sensing of the fingertips is one of the human body’s most powerful abilities; most of our interaction with the environment and with our body is done by our fingers: we caress, hold, pinch, write, scratch, itch, slap, build, toss …
You mentioned the eyes and the ears, both absorb information from the environment, by seeing and by listening, but they do not respond to it. They are not active in any way.
And she is an interesting source for that of an artist.

Hamsa
Is a palm shaped amulet popular through the middle east, North Africa and comonly used for Jewellery.
It is often called the Hand of Fatima, symbolises feminine power. Originating from the Hebrew word Hamesh, literally meaning five, the hand is work as a defense against negative energy, deflecting the gaze of evil eye away from the wearer.
I’ll be used this in the design of my ceramics.

The Holy Grail & Chalice
A chalice or goblet, is a footed cup intended to hold a drink. In religious practice they use these cups for ceremonies, and hold symbolic meaning of the christian church, Jesus and the last supper, and christs power.
The holy grail in medival legend is a cup or a platter used by Christ at the last supper, in which Joseph of Arimathea recieved his blood at the cross. And quests were made of this item by medivaal knights, and were described as Arthurian Legends. Written early 13th century onwards, as a treasure. Because it is said it has miraculous powers that provide happiness, eternal youth or sustance in infinate abundance. Often in the custody of the Fisher King.
I’ve researched this for it’s symbolism to life and death. Especially for my design ideas.
