the neibelheim incident is the perfect example of why i love how cloud and zack’s characters are written. the whole game is about zack building up this rock solid foundation of morals, like his unfaltering loyalty and kindness, so that when he’s given the opportunity in the nibel reactor to catch sephiroth unawares and stop him before he hurts anyone else, he physically can’t bring himself to betray his friend and literally stab him in the back.

whereas cloud follows his sorry ass straight to the reactor, takes zack’s sword, and stabs that bitch without hesitation. he SKEWERED that man before he even said a word to him, and the only thing he had to say was “you killed my mom, fuck you”

even after cloud absorbs zacks personality and memories, he doesn’t pick up zack’s sense of mercy and morality, cloud operates under the assumption that the people he is fighting won’t give anyone else a fair shot, so why should he play fair. its one of my favorite things abt his character and i don’t think zakkura writers give enough attention to how much zack and cloud would argue if they ever had to work together post-game. like, cloud is full of rage 24-7. he was ready to tear shin-ra apart with avalanche for the smallest amount of gil. when tifa lets slip that johnny might rat avalanche out, cloud is ready to shank his ass. he tries to attack sephiroth almost any time he sees him, hallucination or not. where zack is very trusting and moral, cloud does whatever he has to in order to keep him and his friends safe, even if his friends don’t approve. he very much fights like someone who has only ever fought for survival and its such a good bit of writing

The answer to Do You Love Marlene is the answer to Tifa's Do You Love Me?

This is an impulse post

I wrote it in one go.

But I feel it answers quite a few things I have been asked. Many people read the scene completely wrong not taking into account Cloud's personality.

Tifa in OTWAS is seeing Cloud from her POV a lot of the times she notices he doesn't tell her things. Like how he came home on a bike without explanation one day, like how he was doing deliveries for people while out getting inventory for the bar, like why he wanted to bring Denzel home.

Cloud has a habit of not voicing things. I relate to this so much. I do the same exact thing.

And Tifa in the meantime is coming up with al these ideas in her head of what might be going on. Is it that he's upset? Is he hiding things? Does he not love her?

I have had this happen to me too. If I go too long in silence my friends and family will ask me if I'm okay or whether I'm mad.

My husband a lot of the time will assume he did something wrong and I don't want to talk to him.

But of course it's not true. It's just my nature. I can be outgoing but sometimes I just get quiet. Downright silent and thoughtful.

Cloud is the same way. We are told he isn't good at talking, he tends to be quiet and that's just him. Nothing is wrong that is just him being Cloud. Tifa even says several times Cloud is Cloud. He has a way of being and if we pay attention we can figure it out.

His personality is actually pretty adorable.

But when something is wrong he keeps it to himself as well.

But that doesn't mean he is unwilling to share any of his thoughts or feelings he just admittedly doesn't know HOW.

Notice when Tifa asks him where he is going he says "How should I put this..." And then tells her thinking she would be mad. He is like a kid at heart.

So his emotional maturity and how he deals with things is going to be awkward. When Tifa wants to figure out what's going on with him as he falls into his spiral he says he wants to drink alone.

This is not a rejection of Tifa but him trying to avoid talking about a situation he doesn't know how to handle.

But notice every time Tifa asks Cloud a question up to the famous do you love me scene he answers. Awkwardly but he answers.

And if people pay attention he does answer Tifa's do you love me question too. Just indirectly.

In Tifa's POV she thought something was wrong because of them and what they were going through but we know Cloud had gone to the Forgotten City and was dealing with PTSD and trauma was spiraling and did not want her to know.

He was dealing on his own.

Tifa asked him while he was asleep probably not expecting him to awaken, likely afraid of his answer because they were having a communication breakdown and she herself was worried they were not a real family and thus her insecurities were really playing on her mind here.

What was Cloud doing?

Sleeping.

He was sleeping and dealing with his own problems unaware of how Tifa felt about everything.

Hence communication issues.

Tifa then asks Cloud do you love me? While she knows he can't answer. It's very likely he didn't register the question but it was enough to wake him up.

Now she switches the question out of her insecurity. "Do you love Marlene?"

What does Cloud answer?

"Yes. But sometimes I don't know how to act around her. "

There is no doubt he loves Marlene but his awkwardness and emotional maturity and who he is as a person makes it hard for him to show it.

Then Tifa says "Even though you've been together a long time"? Implying that they're a family and close enough and have been together long enough to overcome this hurdle. Showing his emotions should then come easier as they are a family.

But Cloud answers "Maybe I need more than just time."

Because yes they are a family and have been together for a long time but it's not enough to overcome this issue he has.

His personality and nature just makes it harder to show that love he has for Marlene. But there is no question he loves her.

Here is the important part. "Same with you and me?"

He doesn't answer.

People here assume it's because he is showing he doesn't love her. As same with you and me would imply do you love me like Marlene. But that WASN'T the exactly the entire question! Because Cloud had just finished saying he doesn't know how to act around Marlene even though they'd been together a long time.

The rest of the question would be was it the same situation with you and me that even if we had been together a long time you still don't know how to act around me?

Remember the answer to Do you love Marlene? was Yes. The issue was not not loving the issue was not being able to express that.

Now here is where Cloud does not answer. CONFIRMING that yes it is the same situation with Tifa and him. Like it is with him and Marlene even though he loves her he doesn't know how to act sometimes, he sucks at expressing it properly.

And how does he confirm it?

By not answering!

That's exactly what he just said. He doesn't know how to act, to express himself to show it so do we really expect him to know how to answer such questions?

As he said himself the issue is not he doesn't love it's he doesn't know how to express it.

Then Tifa apologizes for bringing up weird things. He tells her not to be sorry it's his problem.

What is his problem? Well his guilt. His feeling like he doesn't deserve happiness his feeling he is a fcuk up.

Truly in character instead of voicing all this, what does he do? Say nothing when she says they could make it their problem.

He doesn't want to burden her and as we established it's his character to just suffer in silence he literally does it with Geostigma.

Tifa however doesn't know what exactly is going on with him and he won't open up now they're at at impasse.

Until he opens up again and tells her about Denzel later.

Analysis complete.

So to conclude: Anyone who thinks Cloud not answering a question means he is rejecting Tifa completely ignored Cloud's entire character which was shown to us and voiced by him throughout the entire novel.
