hot artists don't gatekeep
I've been resource gathering for YEARS so now I am going to share my dragons hoard
Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.
Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.
Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.
Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.
SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.
SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.
Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.
Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.
Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.
Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

I recently did an oc challenge someone had posted and THEN realized I couldn’t source it (so I felt icky about posting it) and to solve that problem I made my own list!
You could do it as month challenge or use it as a grab bag or anything really! I’m doing mine all on one big canvas bc if the art is small it’s easier to finish so many lol. Tag me if you use any of them, I’d love to see your ocs!!

had a dream that I met a wizard and we fell in love and became unhealthily attached to each other so we decided to meld into one single creature together but the process was horrifically slow and painful and most of the dream was us lying in bed holding hands while lesions opened up in our skin and seeped out blue and green fluid and the wizard said "this is going to take a very very long time" and I said "that's ok"

I’d like to point out how in Mulan, there’s two male wartime leaders represented. And they totally contrast with each other.
Tumblr media
One is Shang. He’s drawn in sturdy squares and triangles and colored warmly. One tall, well built shape, like a pillar. He’s all about picking up every grain of rice when one soldier does something wrong; he’s first in his class; he’s up at dawn and cracking down on a swift training regimen which succeeds with even the worst recruits.
His sword is straight, his tunic is straight, his cape adds a square background to his whole silhouette. The entire outfit and hairstyle is completely symmetrical—uniform, from top to bottom.
He’s so committed to the idea of doing things the right way that when he spares Mulan, it’s for no other reason than his “debt is repaid.” He’s not doing it because he was already in love—he barely knew Ping. When he finds a reason to break the code of the nation, that reason is still adhering to his personal code.
Shang is Discipline.
Tumblr media
The other is Shan Yu. Shan Yu is drawn in circles and squares, but the lines connecting them are wavy and wild. He’s big, but not “tall, straight;” he hunches forward like he’d rather be prowling on all fours.
He’s all about overwhelming force, sheer savagery, busting through timber and slate with his body. He sees a wall and decides to take over the country on the other side just to prove he can. The Great Wall can’t keep him out, armies can’t stand against him, avalanches can’t bury him, and it takes nothing less than a barrage of fireworks to kill him—and only because his own weapon is pinning him down.
His sword is crooked but huge. His outfit is cobbled-together from different pelts. It’s jagged with furry edges and rips. He’s totally asymmetrical—from his single glove to his tri-color shirt to the edge of it that hangs off-center—everything about him is not straight and uniform, it’s untamed and out of control.
Shan Yu is Brute Strength.
Tumblr media
They’re both leaders, and they’re both fighting to defeat one another. But they’re both actually unprepared for the main character. Because:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mulan doesn’t have both at the beginning of the movie, and even after her training, she doesn’t have as much strength as Shan Yu or as much discipline as Shang. But she learns how to use what she does have of both, in her own, unique way.
Tumblr media
And what that does is inspire others to do better and be better. Even Shang, in the end. He couldn’t inspire his troops with discipline alone. And Shan Yu couldn’t achieve victory with strength alone. Mulan combined both, and got both.
And this movie set that up right down to the way the characters are visually composed and drawn.
That’s all for now.
