My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies.

Were released in theaters

Together. As a double feature.

Apparently different theaters would show them in different orders. And I can't decide which is worse.

Because your instinct might be "oh, end with Totoro because it isn't depressing."

Except...the last act of Totoro is when Mei, the little sister, is missing and everyone is freaking out because what if she's hurt or worse. There's a long minute there where you think Mei might have *drowned in a pond.* but you're like "well, it's a Ghibli movie. They aren't going to kill off the 4 year old little sister at the end of a Ghibli movie"

i agree with all your points above. Although many times in the book, Henry Jekyll is described as having “every mark of capacity and kindness” this is never reinforced by other characters in the book in which we encounter, apart from Utterson (the narrator and a close friend of his.) but this might not be the most reliable as it holds bias. This implies that despite being described like that, there’s a chasm between the way he’s described and the way he acts.

As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words and there aren’t many actions to show that he is genuinely good natured. Although he does apply to the concept of physiognomy (the idea that what you look like on the outside reflects how you are on the inside) with his “large handsome face.” A victorian reader at the time would have seen that as him being a good person. Despite that, there’s never anything to prove his kindness (apart from the act of charity he did, but that came from needing to do good in order to balance the extremely bad stuff he had done as Hyde) no other statements from other people show how nice of a person he is.

In terms of his “shifty” behavior, the scene in which his window is half open could potentially reflect his secretive behavior. A window in literature tends to show transparency and lack of secrecy, so a half open window could reflect how he’s hiding something. (It also reflects the duality of Jekyll and Hyde)

To be fair, this charming “mask” a victorian gentleman had to hold was something all of them possessed- not just Jekyll. Each victorian had to act well mannered and charming on the outside, whilst concealing their pleasures.

I think the whole point of the book is to show the facade victorian gentleman had to put up in order to fit with societal standards at the time.

Henry Jekyll thoughts and headcanons: I imagine that Henry isn't actually as well liked or trusted by his community as it might initially seem. He has his old school friends Utterson and Lanyon and he's certainly respected, there's nothing explicitly objectionable about him but no one ever gravitates towards him like they do Utterson. Henry is not widely beloved because he's only ever superficially pleasant and polite. He never lets anyone in who's not already part of his circle and even with Utterson and Lanyon they have to just accept that Henry will never 100% be open with them about who he is and what he does/enjoys. No matter how much Henry tries to cover it there's something shifty and secretive about him, always has been, even as a youngster and while he can pull off being charming and approachable it's an effort and he can only keep it up for so long before he starts to look tired or get snappish. He has an excellent bedside manner but there's a notable lack of warmth. He's charming and genteel but nothing else, no one he meets ever learns anything about him as a person or his hobbies or his likes and interests because he doesn't share them with anyone outside of his close knit circle.

He's a master at directing conversation and if it seems like someone is prying too much into his personal life or, heaven forbid, trying to actually get to know him he'll brush it off and then ask them to talk more about themselves because he'll make it seem like he finds them just so very interesting! (He doesn't, he hates them, he is seething and waiting for them to shut up so he can go home). Henry knows that there's nothing under that polite facade, just vices, spite and bitterness. In a way, when he created Hyde, I headcanon that he was hoping that if he could indulge himself under that face that he could make Henry Jekyll real. That maybe if he had an outlet the good, pleasant, charming person he wanted to be would become a genuine part of himself. But it didn't. The hardest part about being Edward Hyde is that it changed everything and it also changed nothing at all. Henry is Edward, he's been Edward all his life and he knows that even if he could stop the transformations he'd still be Edward. If he never killed again he'd still be Edward and Edward is who he's been hiding from the world for his entire life.

Finally got to the part where we find out that howl howell is just a regular guy from wales but besides how hilarious it is taking all the mystery out of him i love that instead of the usual ordinary girl meets a mysterious guy and it turns out he’s magical from a fantastical world the story starts in a world where magic and wizards are normal and we then find out the cool wizard is actually a regular guy from our ordinary ass dimension from an actual real life country. At first i was like wtf are these magic boxes with stems sophie is describing and it turns out they’re just fucking computers. Sophie was the cool mysterious one from a fantastical world all along

#The howl’s moving castle book is great #we know it’s a fantasy story but finding out it’s not an au it exists alongside ours was a neat touch #I like how the black door didn’t lead to the war but to the real world instead #which in many ways is worst

btw i was talking about howl’s moving castle to my best friend who loves the movie but hasnt read the book and i was telling her how in the book the black option in howl’s door doesn’t go to the war but to our world and she said “well it makes sense that to hayao miyazaki going to the real world from a magical one would mean going to a placed filled with war” and you know what you might have a point
