Oh, Ok Boomer

I have a Boomer mother and landlady and suddenly the ‘ok Boomer’ comment really makes sense and doesn’t just seem to be rude. They both got married and didn’t really work, they bought they’re houses for 37pence and watched it jump up in value over and over, they have pensions that make your eyes water and from what they’ve said, and how they act, they’ve had it easy pretty much their whole lives.

Recently my landlady snapped at me via text, so I, a Generation Xer snapped back and she stopped talking to me for ages. This is the woman who would put kisses on her texts to me from the day I moved in, which made me uncomfortable. I told my Mum the story and she said I should ‘treat her kindly, with consideration and respect and tell her things gently as that’s what she would like’.

And suddenly I get the whole ‘ok Boomer’ you’re so out of touch comment, because they are. I’m expected to give respect, and be careful of their feelings, answer all their nosy questions and make sure they’re never inconvenienced. Wow. Just wow.

That’s the end of today’s rant until one of them does something else that makes me think, wow, spoilt Boomer behaviour there.

One time I was explaining to my dad how unfair it is that every big city has at least a couple gay bars but there are only like 20ish lesbian bars left in the country and he responded with "That's cause gay men have a good party culture. Lesbians don't have time to party, they're too busy debating the sociological implications of things and studying for postgrad degrees" and as much as I wanted to tell him he was out of line for that, as a lesbian who spends all her free time on Tumblr debating sociological implications and messaging other lesbians in discord servers where everyone has a PhD or masters for some reason I felt like I might not be the best person to make that argument
