I honestly think the scenes of greatest intimacy in Austen are those moments of unspoken solidarity between people when they have to deal with a difficult person: Emma and Mr. Knightley handling the crisis of snow at Christmas, Darcy and Elizabeth curtailing Caroline Bingley's bitchiness to protect Georgiana in the music room, Wentworth seeing the child clinging to Anne's neck and wordlessly removing him, Edmund and Fanny dancing silently together at the end of a long ball, just enjoying being introverts together away from the Crawfords, Col. Brandon fetching Mrs. Dashwood because she would be of comfort to Marianne and Elinor...

From the text, one can imagine that being a GENTLEMAN was a core identity and source of pride for Darcy, and Elizabeth unknowingly hit him right where it hurt.

I was given good principles, but left to follow them in pride and conceit. Unfortunately an only son (for many years an only child), I was spoiled by my parents, who, though good themselves, (my father particularly, all that was benevolent and amiable,) allowed, encouraged, almost taught me to be selfish and overbearing, to care for none beyond my own family circle, to think meanly of all the rest of the world, to wish at least to think meanly of their sense and worth compared with my own. Such I was, from eight to eight-and-twenty; and such I might still have been but for you, dearest, loveliest Elizabeth!

The word "gentleman" originally just meant someone of a certain social class who didn't have to work for a living but overtime became synonymous with the refined behavior and "good breeding" that people expected of gentlemen. In modern times it's become just another way to compliment someone. (Henry Tilney would be so annoyed. See his sarcastic commentary on the word "nice.")

From Darcy's description of his upbringing, one can see how "you've been born into privilege and have what other people don't have" became "your status and education (that you did nothing to earn) makes you inherently superior to those who don't have it," not only for Darcy but for the upperclass in general.

There's this undertone of snobby false benevolence: "Oh the lower-class can't help themselves from being so unrefined. They haven't had the education and good breeding we've had, you know."

Thank goodness for Elizabeth putting Darcy in his place:

DAY 20: A Father’s Duty (Ryuuken)

Another installment of my Prinz des Litchs AU .

His great knowledge about the quincy, his status as the last Etch alive in the world and for Uryuu’s sake, Ryuuken took a very active role during the war against YW.

Throughout the course of these events, Ryuuken and Uryuu learned and managed to connect again, and now, almost a decade later, both of them have managed a better relationship as father and son. 

Ryuuken has mellowed quite a bit, still keeping his sharp tongue and his special talent to get under his son’ skin (just when Uryuu gets too stubborn or compromise his health); no one can deny Ryuuken looks way more relaxed and at peace; Isshin would even say he looks happier (something he won’t say to his face unless he wants to get shot).

As a result of a long research spawning various generations of quincy, Ryuuken was the one capable to save Uryuu’s soul from being crushed under YW overhelming power. However it had sequels and a terrible prize to pay, however, practical as he is, Ryuuken believes as long as Uryuu lives and can have a future, it is enough. Uryuu thinks the same (his friends are not so sure.).

Due to the risky solution, Uryuu can’t abandon the spiritual world ever again. The living world with the current level of reishi can’t sustain the great power he now posses (which includes the Soul King power). Even Karakura with its rich spiritual atmosphere is barely enough to let him stay for less than a couple of hours.  

Another side effect is that Uryuu will fall asleep suddenly, at any given moment. The first 5 years were the hardest for everyone, but for Ryuuken it was the worst, because it made him doubt and think of Kanae and the oppressive fear wondering if his son will wake up ever again. Even now, after a decade, and the certainty of Uryuu getting better, he can’t help but feel that undercurrent of sadness whenever Uryuu falls asleep when talking to him.

Whenever it happens, Ryuuken takes his son to his rooms, and talks to him with a gentle voice that he only uses when he is asleep (and no one is looking).
