I finally updated Melon’s Redemption...
Tumblr media
I’m ok, life just sucks but it’s getting better. Considering I’m finally writing (sort of) again, it’s slowly getting better anyway.

My Issue with The Infamous Louis Panel
Tumblr media
I think y’all know exactly what I’m talking about so let me just dive into it.
Aside from Louis being a total hypocrite and being involved with the very livestock business HE came from, this panel had the potential to completely change Louis’ character and (possibly) his influence on the Beastars plot but this panel is NEVER mentioned again. You could cut it from the entire plot and it literally wouldn’t impact the story whatsoever.
So next to it making Louis no better than the carnivores that sold him as livestock (or pretty much exactly like them!), it’s probably the most uselessness panel in the entire manga! (Or one of the top ten worst plot points from the story, whatever you wanna call it)
That all being said, here’s how I approach it in my fanfics…Completely ignore it! I acknowledge and include Louis being involved in and witnessing some illegal stuff while boss of the Shishigumi, but just the drug and meat dealing/eating and cannibalism on his part.
Now, here’s what I think SHOULD have happened with this panel:
Have an entire chapter dedicated to it and it showing Louis’ shock and horror that the livestock business is somehow still active, demand the immediate release of the poor kids in it, and then use his status as the Shishigumi’s boss to find out how he ended up being sold as livestock and where his birth parents are.
OR! This but Louis has time to really think about it and weigh his options: Chose his own survival and truly become a predator animal, just like carnivores or try to save those children and risk his own life in doing so (I was convinced the Shishigumi would kill him if he attempted something like that when I first read the manga and I could see a similar situation happening here too-albeit maybe it would have been whoever runs the livestock trade or it’s customers).
Side thought: If Louis were forced into it (meaning he didn’t want to be part of the livestock trade and tried to have it shit down but was told he could be killed/eaten if he didn’t), he could have had a total identity crisis and feeling immense guilt and (possibly) a real bonding moment where members of the Shishigumi try to comfort him and reveal that this is what life in the Black Market is truly like: That everyone is prey that can be killed and eaten at any time. A place to kill or be killed.
In either scenario, Louis would be forced to re-think his entire belief system and previous convictions about what it means to be predator and prey animals and which side he’s on. This could have also been a chance for him to truly come to terms with his past and find closure for what had happened to him, which arguably could have been just as impactful (if not more so) than Louis meeting Ibuki and the Shishigumi.
TLDR: That panel of Louis selling kids as livestock is completely useless and is a terrible missed opportunity for character growth and serious angst.

I just realized my love for writing romance and intimacy coincides with when I discovered Beastars.
I’m Acexual and have never been attracted to others but when I read/watched Beastars, I wondered why sexual scenes and nudity was more prevalent than actually showing love. Scenes where Legoshi and Haru are just talking or holding each other’s hands were much more interesting to me than the garden club shed or the hotel scene.
I wish we saw more intimacy like that. Say what you will about the sexual stuff but it means nothing without scenes that show us that the couple loves and cares about each other.
I may never write sexual themes but I hope the romance and intimacy I do write about can be felt to the reader.
Tldr, I’m Acexual but Beastars got me into writing romance and intimacy

Official translation VS fan translation. And I LOOOOOOVE the official one. Shows why Melon assumed his mom ate his dad.

This is the fan translation. In the official translation he says: “Regardless of whether he inherited my strength… I don’t want him to waste his life fighting!”
May not seem like a big difference. But the fan translation makes it clear that Gosha doesn’t want Legoshi to make the same mistakes he made.

Melon Beastars Analysis
Melon from Beastars is one intriguing g7y for sure.
He has so many untreated traumas and even tho he tried his best to "heal" in his own way by havocing chaos in the black ally market, almost killing Legosi, and biting a big chunk out of Yahya, he didn't really accomplish his main goal to find the meaning and experience a Tasty meal.
His mom sure didn't help during childhood. She seemed to be so madly in love with the gazella that she wanted to treat Melon the same way he treated his father or even worse.
Melon is incredible and masking and his mood changes are present at such an early age. From dodging balls perfectly to killing his classmates who made him suffer, he did have a fabulous sense on how to make the world suffer and the people around him, beacuse he himself got discriminated from that world by both the carnivores and the herbivores as he pointed out in one chapter. His manipulation is so amazing and it's top tier, extremely affective, which I LOVED trough out the manga!!!!
He had all the reasons to turn out the way he did, and in the end he has always been misunderstood and if he would have gotten help at an early age, maybe he could have changed society. I mean imagine a Legoshi Louis and MELON 🍈 alliance group! These are just ky Alternative Universe taughts.
Anyways Melon's violent mood changes in each chapter are getting more and more unhinged and I loved it. He stabbed himself in a public school beacuse he experienced a new emotion for the first time, he wanted to kill 20 leopards on the spot, beacuse he loathed his mother so much. He made up the term strangling therapy while chocking Legoshi and he had the time of his life, putting on a show for Louis as well when the black out ceased to exist.
Not to mention his tattoo scam with Holger the sloth. From numb emotions we got to see his genius planning skills and predictions. Which was such a cool detail to his character!!! 🩶
That's all for now - I have been obsessed with Beastars ever since 2021 when I started to read it as my 1st ever manga and watched the Anime adaptation on Netflix -
Thanks for reading my rambling about my favorite Beastars antagonist: 🍈

You know, I think it would have been more impactful to the plot and to Legoshi if Toki had been murdered for being married to Gosha (hybrid haters or mix species haters or something like that) and if Leano, similarly, chose suicide because she could not take the bullying and systematic discrimination of being a hybrid anymore. If Paru had taken that route instead, it would have given Legoshi more emotionally and mentally invested in Melon but conflicted with trying to capture him to stop him or trying to protect him.
Meanwhile, Gosha would be even more protective and worried for Legoshi as he doesn’t want him to live and suffer the way his mother and grandmother suffered.
In my AU where Gosha and Yahya get married and adopt Melon, I imagine that Yahya never really thought about having kids (certainly not biologically) and he’s not exactly good at being a parent (maybe he doesn’t really know what to do with Leano or how to care for a hybrid child like Melon) but he does care about them and does everything he can for them. Most importantly, he sticks around!

@beautifulstarsbeastars he sucks his thumb.
I wish he found love and was happy by the end. He didn’t deserve that life he had.

Lol, I got Leano mixed up with Gosha there! 😅 Ok, so Melon would be shocked Legoshi had a parental figure who didn’t abuse him or abandon him but he and Legoshi both felt abandoned (in their own circumstances) by their mothers.
You are right, I just meant there seemed to be some real love between Leano and Legoshi (him bringing her flowers and her hugging him before her death) but I think if Leano really loved her son, how he looked would not have mattered to her.
Her hiding away and later killing herself because of her own vanity doesn’t make much sense to me. I guess I’d feel differently about it if she was being bullied/harassed by other animals because of her being a hybrid, if her transformation caused her physical pain, or if she had uncontrollable killing urges that put her family in danger but we didn’t see any sign of that.

I guess this is why Melon is often compared to the Joker. As much as I wish we got more from Melon, him being unpredictable makes him much more mysterious. Like even without a face mask, he’s still hiding his true wants, thoughts, feelings and motives.
It would have been interesting if he and Legoshi got to talk about their relationships with their moms. I think Melon would be surprised Legoshi had a close and healthy (and normal!) relationship with his mother while Legoshi would be horrified at the idea that Melon may have been abused by his own mother (even if he didn’t necessarily know the extent of said abuse: I’m just not sure if that’s something Melon would acknowledge or even talk about-not without therapy or if it was with someone he trusted with that kind of information anyway).

When I first saw this panel it reminded me of Disney’s Robin Hood King Jon sucking his thumb whenever his mother was mentioned.
But seriously, thumb sucking like this can sometimes be a sign someone suffered SA. I’m saying sometimes because I don’t know for sure but the fact that this was the one and only time we saw how Melon’s trauma affects him is so disappointing. I mean, what if Melon’s trauma fueled his hatred of the world and he hunted down and killed other abusers just like his mother?
