FINAL PROJECT - Digital Detox Expansion
Tumblr media
Wow.  Where  do  I  even  begin?  This  experiment  was  so  soothing  for  the  soul.  To  get  away  from  my  phone  for  not  only  one  day,  but  for  an  entire  week  was  incredibly  beneficial  for  my  mental  health  and  well-being.  I  find  that  when  I  walk,  I  feel  free, happy and refreshed. As  I  was  walking  through  my  neighborhood,  I  was  not  only  soaking  in the  warm  weather  that  Florida  has  to  offer,  but  I  was  immersed  in  this  beautiful  sensation  of  nostalgia  as  this  is  where  I  grew  up  from  ages  11  to  18.
Usually  when  I  walk,  I'm  listening  to  music  and  I'm  very  plugged  in,  still  actively  using  my  phone,  but  in  an  attempt  to  do  this project  justice,  I  turned  my  phone  off  completely.  And  this  I  noticed  changed  the  way  I  looked  at  walks  entirely.  In  this  neighborhood  where  my  parents  live,  the  town  is  notorious  for  having  deer  roam  freely  throughout  the  days  and  nights  and this  was  going  to  become  a  recurring  pattern  on  my  walks.  I  encountered  about  15  deer  in  total  just  on  my  first  three  days  of  walking!  I  was  able  to  quickly. capture  some  videos  of  some  of  these  precious  moments  and  to  be  honest  I  felt  even  more  at  peace  walking  next  to  these  creatures. Then the phone went right back to off!
The  town  that  my  parents  live  in  is  called  Lake  Nona,  which  comes  from  the  literal  lake,  Lake  Nona,  which  is  out  back  behind  the  neighborhood  that  connects  a  couple  of  other  sister  neighborhoods.  Luckily,  we  have  access  to  this  lake,  so  I  would  find  myself  walking  daily  to  the  docks  and  relaxing  and  resting  there.  I  have,  of  course,  captured  more  videos  and  pictures  of  these  moments  too.  And  these  were  the  moments  where  I  felt  I could  simply  breathe  and  just  truly  exist  in  the  moment. You  know,  it’s  oddly  funny…  I  have  a  tattoo  that  reads  “Just  Breathe”,  but  oftentimes  due  to  the craziness  of life  I  find   myself  almost  forgetting  to  follow  this  mantra.  Needless  to  say,  this  experience  was  great  for  me.
Tumblr media
While  I  might  not  have  been  originally  counting  the  miles,  I  ended  up  actually  walking  16  miles  exactly  over  the  course  of  this  one  week!  With  absolutely  zero  distractions,  I  found  it  so  easy  to  just  tune  everything  else  out  and  focus  on  the  bigger  picture,  which  was  enjoying  nature.  Nature  has  become  such  a  big  part  of  my  life  after  this  project.  Before  the  digital  detox  experiment,  I  must  admit  I  was  a  little  addicted  to  my  phone.  I  have  been  a  little  overly  comfortable  with  my  electronics  since  I  was  a  teenager.  And  this  never  was  a  phase.  It  rather  just  became  a  part  of  my  life  as  I  am  a  part-time  influencer.  This  project  meant  more  to  me  than  I  could  even  put  into  words  because  it's  not  often  that  I  am  able  to  even  turn  off  my  phone.  I  mean,  for  example,  when  I  did  turn  off  my  phone,  when  I  turned  it  back  on,  I  was  still  bombarded  with  emails,  and  even  calls  sometimes.
Tumblr media
And  that's  okay.  That  is  just  the  reality  of  the  world  that  I  live  in.  For  the  longest  time,  I  have  wanted  to  find  a  balance  where  I  could  mesh  my  online  persona  with  the  person  that  does  love  things  like  taking  walks  and  enjoying  nature.  And  I  finally  think  that  I  have  figured  out  how  to  do  that.
youtube
*Statistics show that roughly 64% of Americans have their phone on them all the time and 90% of smartphone users check their phone within 15 minutes of waking up. (2023 Niagara Recovery)* With this information, I made it my priority to walk at the times I thought I would be most combative with my own cell phone "addiction". The hours where I really feel the need to check social media and honestly doom scroll at times are the most random hours at night ranging from 9 pm to as late/early as 3 am. I split up my time each day walking in the morning (instead of getting glued straight to my phone screen) and at night (the night walks tended to be my favorite because there's an overall vibe in the air that adds to the briskness!)
Tumblr media
(I just want to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to really ‘disconnect’ from everything, even though we are in an online class, ha ha.)

FINAL BOOK REVIEW - The Soul of an Octopus by: Sy Montgomery
Tumblr media
Favorite quote: "Eager to defend the octopus against centuries of character assassination, I replied to my friend, "Monsters? Not at all!" Dictionary definitions of monster always mention the words large, ugly, and frightening. To me, Athena was as beautiful and benign as an angel."
Video embed if available of author (TedTalks, interview, etc):

youtube
•How does this book change, disrupt or enhance the definition of "celebrityhood".  (2-3 paragraphs)
In "The Soul of an Octopus," Sy Montgomery challenges "celebrityhood," as it explores the intellect and individuality of octopuses’ capabilities rather than focusing on human beings. Celebrity culture usually involves money, fame and popularity and it often revolves around the accomplishments and skills of individual people. However, "The Soul of an Octopus" brings in a different perspective because it describes the incredible abilities and interestingly sophisticated feelings of octopuses that rarely get talked about in average conversations. This book also calls out the frequent misrepresentation of octopuses in Hollywood and society from monstrous destructive beings to the more mellow, level-headed animals we come to know them as after reading.
The book describes octopuses as extremely smart and unique animals with different personalities and habits using rich descriptions and personal accounts from Sy herself. While reading, it is revealed that they can learn, solve puzzles, recognize specific people all on their own without any help, and of course camouflage. "One online video shows the animal altering its body position, color, and skin texture to morph into a flatfish, then several sea snakes, and finally a poisonous lionfish--all in a matter of seconds." With this new information, the idea that only humans are capable of having such a high level of intellect and consciousness is completely challenged and contradicted.
•What contributions does this book make to social change and activism? (2-3 paragraphs)
This book makes several contributions to social change and activism including acknowledging the part we play in climate disruption, widening human's acceptance of octopuses and ultimately acceptance of all life forms at the end of the day. It is clear that author Sy Montgomery's intent was to not only educate humans of all ages the capabilities of octopuses but to show us that we can also learn from them!
Not only does this book promote environmental conservation, but it also inspires readers to find their own ways of participating in activism. Through Montgomery's personal sharing, reader's may feel encouraged to go out on their own to their local aquariums or science museums to learn more about these eight-legged friends and even spread the word in their communities about their new insights.
•What new concept did this book introduce to the world? What are some of the ripple effects? (1-2 paragraphs)
This book sheds light on octopuses' rather advanced personality traits and skills which is rather new information to the world, that usually looks at animals such as octopuses as "aliens", "monsters" or "brainless beings". Every new fact in this book contradicts these ideas that humans have often created surrounding animals like octopuses in a remarkable way. Through Sy's passionate writing and encounters it makes it easy to learn more about these special creatures. ""Everyone is different," Wilson reminded us. "They have different personalities. Even lobsters have different personalities. You stick around here long enough and you'll see.""
The ripple effects from this book's impact would be changing how the general public sees not only octopuses but ocean life as a whole; and rather than looking at these creatures as completely different from us humans, coming to an understanding that the ocean holds an entire ecosystem and community that know how to communicate with each other in their own special ways. Most importantly, another ripple effect could hopefully be prioritizing the protection and care for aquatic animals of all forms, which would continue to trickle down into man-made choices such as less water pollution, hunting, and supporting aquariums.

Week 13: Trees, Mycelial Networks and Community
Watch the Suzanne Simard video and respond in a post on your blog. What did you discover?
Firstly, it was so apparent (and quite sweet to watch) that Suzanne Simard has this immense passion for learning and caring for trees. With every point she made you could tell how excited she gets about bringing up a story from her past or even a simple fact about the trees themselves. Additionally, I feel like I learned so much watching her TED Talk about how trees officially communicate and balance their own environments, and it was very helpful to see her reinstate some ideas I already had on my own about this. Lastly, who knew fungi could take up so much space and were so smart? Well a lot of people probably did, but not this guy!
Tumblr media
Weave in your thoughts on this breakthrough research? What have you gleaned about trees as cooperative networks? What can we learn from the trees?
I feel like everyone has this general idea like I did that trees "communicate" in an umbrella term sort of way. Thanks to Suzanne Simard we can learn that yes they do communicate, but they are also capable of some pretty important things like sharing nutrients between each other and recognizing their own "family" or "families". This was so cool to learn about, and hear it from a first person perspective!
Why do you think trees have entered human consciousness to such a degree in recent years, including pop culture examples like Ted Lasso?
Although trees have always had a unique position in human awareness, there are a few reasons why this significance seems to have increased recently. Firstly, people are becoming more conscious of environmental problems, especially those related to deforestation and climate change. Trees stand for the resiliency of nature and the value of protecting ecosystems as people's concerns about the state of our world grow. Secondly, mindfulness and getting back in touch with nature are becoming more and more popular as strategies for reducing stress and enhancing mental health. Trees are potent symbols of peace and stability because of their calming presence and rather steady development. Finally, pop culture's representation of trees in a variety of forms, such as "Ted Lasso" definitely enriches narratives. Trees are wonderful metaphors for character development and themes of resiliency since they may stand for growth, stability, and the passing of time. All in all, the rising awareness of trees in human consciousness is a reflection of our changing relationship with nature and our realization of its significance in our existence.
Choose one of the quotes above and comment. Why does this quote speak to you?
"Trees live amid an orchestra of organisms. Whispering, gossiping, eavesdropping, all working together in symphonic harmony. Recent research shows that trees are in constant communication with one another through an underground biological neural network made of mycorrhizal fungi."
--Suzanne Simard in The Guardian
This quote beautifully speaks to me because it practically summarizes how I feel about nature as a whole, all existing in their own community with their own silent language which holds a lot of power, even the flowers and the weeds at times in my mind. The start of this quote also sounds like something that came out of one of my favorite films of all time, Alice In Wonderland.
Tumblr media
Describe a tree from your childhood or a recent interaction with a tree. How did it impact you?
This story is kind of full circle looking back at it... When I was thirteen, still living in my parents house on Loblolly Pine Circle, I unironically would climb the Loblolly Pines as a pastime and to make me feel something. I used to climb upon the branches and pretend I was a multitude of characters from a wilderness explorer, to an animal, to all sorts of things. This one particular day something was in the air. As I was climbing, I vividly remember it was such a calming and windy day and I thought to myself (literally; because in a tree not many people can reach you) "Why not climb higher?". And so I did, and I made it to roughly fifteen feet up until SNNNNAPPPP: The branch breaks and down I go also breaking my own wrist and bruising my ribs. You could say that this tree and I were quite connected in a literal sense. This of course changed my view of climbing trees overall as well and taught me to admire from a safe distance!
Tumblr media
Did your Digital Detox experience heighten your awareness of trees? Please describe.
Hands down, yes. The Digital Detox experience heightened my awareness of all of the trees, animals, and even bugs that live around me showing me how many pieces there are in this game of life.

Week 12 - STREET ART WEEK
Tumblr media
Since I was a teenager, there has always been a vibrant street art strip right by downtown Orlando known as Mills Ave; I have to be honest I used to hit up this spot frequently to snap cute photos for Instagram for example or to simply just take in art for free.
Tumblr media
The artists rotate in an order I haven't quite figured out yet since I'm only ever 'home' for such a short period of time but every time I come back its new and FRESH art so I felt very confident I could complete this week's task at this location. All the photos I took are by different artists, but make up the surrounding walls of Sam Flax Orlando (which is an art supply store fittingly)!
Tumblr media
These artists are all new discoveries to me, and I am very pleased with the discovery I must say.
Tumblr media
"Dialogues in the margins" describe discussions and ideas spoken outside of traditional academic or political forums as well as the media. These conversations frequently take place in less formal, sometimes ignored settings like social media, internet forums, underground creative groups, or community meetings. Marginal conversations have a critical role in forming public discourse. They disrupt the current quo, democratize communication, make discourse more lively and inclusive, and frequently set the stage for important social and political developments.
Tumblr media
I have never posted my own graffiti art but I have made my fair share of signs for street protests I was active in (2020's Black Lives Matter protests in my area & The recent SAG-AFTRA Strike I picketed for as a SAG-AFTRA member).

Week 11 - Sustainable Fashion: Innovators and Outliers in Fungi, Seaweed, Food Waste and Design
1. How does Fast Fashion impact you directly?
I either see fast fashion frequently showcased in media I take in such as music videos and film/tv work and in turn I end up *wearing* said fast fashion products anytime I find myself on set... And to be honest a good chunk of my wardrobe for a while included brands like SHEIN.
2. Which celebrity brands are doing the most to address sustainability? Which ones are greenwashing?
Over the years, Angelina Jolie has been among the most well-known celebrities to publicly endorse sustainable fashion. In May of last year, she introduced Atelier Jolie, her own line of clothing. As per the official website, Atelier Jolie exclusively utilizes overstock and leftover premium antique fabrics to manufacture their clothing.
There have been numerous occasions where brands will collaborate with celebrities to back their "sustainable" clothing lines, in the end they all almost instantly backfire due to the reality of the working conditions used to make these lines. H&M, SHEIN, Pretty Little Thing, Zara, and BooHoo are just a few among this long list of brands with possible greenwashing history.
3. What are your thoughts on the viability of the Bio-textiles mentioned in articles and video above?
I believe that the Bio-textiles mentioned in the articles are viable as ever when it comes to the pros versus cons. On the plus side, we know that these Bio-textiles are biodegradable, sustainable and eco-friendly and have the ability to mimic other textiles with no issues! The only serious "con" I can think of would be the cost-effectiveness of obtaining and utilizing these bio-textiles on a larger scale.
4. Choose Three Facts gleaned from this post and comment about your own practices with regard to fast fashion and sustainability.
~ Organic cotton, natural fibers, organic hemp, and TENCEL are a few of the most sustainable clothing fabrics, so examining labels is important. (I actually had no idea that this was a fact! Without realizing it I have indirectly tried to already lean towards organic cotton and "natural fibers" in the fabrics I purchase!)
~ The best way to be more sustainable: choose quality pieces that will last a long time over cheaper ones that wear out and quickly go out of style (I have ALWAYS been told this, but in these times this message goes to the back burner FAST (didn't mean to make a pun there) with how frequent trends arise and change in the fashion market, especially in an economy where consumers quite literally help set these trends... I need to remind myself of this tidbit more often.)
~ Younger generations, more cautious about their fashion choices, could become the leaders in sustainable fashion. (I whole heartedly believe this to be true, and believe younger generations can become the leaders of almost every industry known to man.)
5. Include photos from your own sustainable clothing brands, thrift store shopping, dumpster sleuthing outside stores, etc. BE CREATIVE!
I sadly don't own any true sustainable clothing brands but I have created a little list of brands I would love to try out!

Week 10- Digital Detox Experiment
1. DIGITAL DETOX Experiment: Leave your phone at home for one hour to take a walk in your neighborhood. Write down your observations when you return and draw a map of your path. (This is a hand drawn map, not a screen shot of Google or Apple Maps.)
2.  Afterwards, take a photo of your hand drawn map to include in your book review. What did you observe? Did you notice animals, trees, sounds and sights that you'd never seen before? Did the experience provide any revelations? Were you anxious, relieved, inspired?
Tumblr media
To be completely honest, I do a one hour minimum walk EVERY SINGLE DAY to simply disconnect from the game of life and find space to breathe and be alone with my own thoughts... Getting to do this for an assignment was simply refreshing and natural. Because of my extensive walk history in my area (home away from home while I am working on an acting contract), I didn't necessarily see anything I hadn't seen before; I did however notice some beautiful birds (ducks, irises, and geese), a gorgeous sunset, and most importantly I noticed how at PEACE I felt.
2. What is your favorite quote from the book and why do you find it meaningful?
“Our very idea of productivity is premised on the idea of producing something new, whereas we do not tend to see maintenance and care as productive in the same way.”
This quote really resonates with me because as an artist this is truer than ever, in an economy where creation is the mere basis of not only our livelihood but "success". It isn't spoken about enough how productivity can look more internalized than what's usually expected.
3. Why do you think this book, released by indie publishing house Melville Press, became an unexpected bestseller during the height of the Covid19 pandemic? Her book was so successful, she recently released a second title, Saving Time: Discovering a Life Beyond the Clock.
During COVID times, society's idea of productivity kind of got turned on its side as people found themselves unable to go about their normal routines; the idea of comfort also became more individualized and niche because everyone was seemingly doing the same thing: everything but NOTHING. I think this book became an unexpected bestseller because honestly people definitely had more time to read as it is, but also I think there was a spiked interest in self-care and mental health during the pandemic. This was a time where people collectively were acknowledging how hard it can be to "spread yourself thin" especially in dire times.
4. How does the attention economy benefit from our social media activity and media streaming consumption?
The attention economy has a severe chokehold on people of all demographics simply because we now live in a world where not feeding into media consumption and social media algorithms is seen as abnormal. Because we are seemingly all so connected all over the world through social media platforms and applications, not only is the demand for content high but we can clearly see how life online can impact the real world in the form of "trends" which continue to feed into that exact economy.
5. How does this book relate to the topic of celebrity culture?
"CELEBRITY CULTURE is an essentially modern phenomenon that emerged amid such twentieth-century trends as urbanization and the rapid development of consumer culture. It was profoundly shaped by new technologies that make easily possible the mechanical reproduction of images and the extremely quick dissemination of images and information/News through such media as radio, cinema, television, and the Internet." -Encyclopedia.com
This book acknowledges that celebrity culture is inevitably growing, becoming wide spread and accepted.
6. Do you take digital detox breaks regularly? If yes, describe them. Were they more challenging during the quarantine era? Why?
I take one every single day, and they are my "escapes" even though in reality these moments end up being where I feel most present and comfortable with myself, so often times I just look at it as a necessity. I have to admit, during the quarantine era it was slightly more difficult to truly disconnect from the digital world when again, that was singlehandedly the way information was shared and seemingly all I COULD do was open my laptop or scroll on my phone for example.
7. Do you sleep with your phone or computer? Are you aware of the impacts on your sleep cycles and relaxation caused by 24/7 proximity? Have you experimented with leaving digital devices in a drawer or another room?
When I am on my own schedule I tend to fall asleep with my devices kind of carelessly to be honest. I have frequently fallen asleep with headphones on for example, connected to either my MacBook or my iPhone and haven't given much thought to it. It doesn't seem to affect my sleep cycle or relaxation as I actually have a form of codependency with music, leading to using electronics as my form of intaking as much music as possible. I could even argue I feel more at peace with my phone playing a random playlist vs. silence in the air. But I have experimented with leaving my digital devices say in the kitchen or something in a past relationship of mine... This habit lead to more one on one focused time with my partner which was the goal.
8. What does Odell mean by 'doing nothing?' Are we capable of doing nothing?
Odell defines "doing nothing" as avoiding the constant need to feed into the attention economy and instead focusing one's time and energy on what they need as an individual. I think it is extremely hard to convince certain types of people in this day and age to truly do "doing nothing" justice, as many many people actually revolve around consumer culture, so as a whole I am not sure if "we" are capable of doing nothing if that makes sense.
9. What is the role of nature in Odell's book, in particular the role of birds? (P.S. Did you know that birdwatching became a HUGE pastime in the Covid era?)
Odell genuinely shares the same appreciation and love for nature as I do as a human being. She and I see beauty in the simplest of forms such as grass, trees, bodies of water; And we both see birds as symbols of freedom and easygoing.

Week 9- Documentary Films: Social Impact and Explorations
1. Film trailer and link to film's website.
youtube
2. What important social issue question does this documentary ask and what type of storytelling does it employ to answer it? (2 paragraphs)
Summer of Soul explored the importance of Black celebration and the community coming together in times of need while also calling out the fact that Black media such as this has often been hidden over the years. The importance of this documentary is relevant to the racial issues that were not only present in 1969 but are even still prevalent today.
The documentary simply utilizes the evidence/footage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival along with interviews of attendees and artists in the present day and this is such a powerful example of letting said Black joy be remembered and revered.
3. What new story is revealed in this film, and what revelations have emerged from it to impact popular discourse? (2 paragraphs)
The mere fact that this festival even took place in Harlem was itself a news revelation because not many people know about this historic event, it is not talked about or taught in schools, but I am not even surprised by the fact that the footage has been hiding in the archives for years. Releasing the footage opens up the entire conversation about why successful moments in Black history are often overlooked or completely erased.
To take a snapshot of Harlem and the Black population there in a time where racial injustice was accepted and expected... What I see in this documentary are clips that could have inspired multiple generations of young Black people and artists, including myself (who is NOW immensely impacted; being a Black artist who recently just moved OUT of Harlem!).
4. What personal revelations did you glean from this film? What shocked or inspired you? How has this film changed your perspective on the subject?
As I briefly mentioned above, I am a Black artist (singer, actor, dancer, writer) who just finished up my time living in Harlem itself. Watching this documentary was truly eye opening and quite shocking because I have never, and I mean never, heard of this festival even once before in my life. I lived right next to Mt. Morris Park as a matter of fact, and you would think that I would have at least basic knowledge of what took place there... and that's what left me kind of disappointed during my watch. But nonetheless it was enriching to learn about the culture of the area I once called home.
5. How did this documentary expand the reputation of the subject, and how did it serve to further the spotlight on a key social change issue? (2 paragraphs)
This documentary beautifully expanded on the very reputation of BLACK PEOPLE AND BLACK ARTISTS AS A WHOLE, showing the audience that we ARE capable of coming together to make waves and share our common interests. This documentary also served to further shine a spotlight on BLACK VOICES and the serious importance of even shining a light on our voices in the first place, giving us platform to freely be.
This film highlighted the Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969 as a prominent music festival, compared to the likes of a festival like Woodstock, finally after getting little to no recognition for the event for years.
6. Did the film prove pivotal for the director/producers' careers? Were they historic for expanded gender and racial representation in storytelling? (1 paragraph)
This film further established director Questlove as a significant (and quite talented) filmmaker as its success was a clear reward to the dedication of storytelling and representation.
7. Add interview clips, images, hotlinks and/or quotes from reviews.

Week 6- Climate Justice, Food Sustainability and Black Lives Matter
1. Who is Leah Thomas and what happened at COP26? (1 paragraph)
Leah Thomas (commonly known as Green Girl Leah) is an intersectional environmentalist activist that helped advocate for inclusivity in the environmentalist community; she is Black and represents Black young climate change progressives. At COP26 (an annual conference that was based in Glasgow for this specific year) she spoke in hopes of expanding the conversation on climate change with a new post 2020 BLM lens.
Tumblr media
2. What is Intersectional Environmentalism and how does it relate to Black Lives Matter (2-3 paragraphs)?
Many of today's young environmental activists resonate with intersectional environmentalism. This new wave of environmentalism was founded following the death of George Floyd. Leah Thomas, an eco-influencer, made a post on Instagram urging environmentalists to take a stand and address the racial inequalities inside their own groups.
"Intersectional environmentalism is a movement, not a moment: “It brings injustices done to the most vulnerable communities, and the earth, to the forefront and does not minimize or silence social inequality. Intersectional environmentalism advocates for justice for people + the planet.” " -Leah Thomas
3. Who is Leah Penniman? What is Soul Fire Farm and why is it important to the climate movement (2-3 paragraphs)?
Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol farmer, mother, author, soil geek, and food justice campaigner. In order to eradicate racism from the food system and restore our ancestors' relationship to the land, she co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010.
As Co-ED and Farm Director, Leah leads a group that supports effective food sovereignty initiatives such as farmer education for Black and Brown communities, subsidized farm food distribution for communities experiencing food apartheid, and national and international organizing for food system equity.
4. Explore "Black Forager" aka Alexis Nikole on TikTok: choose a favorite post and if possible, try the recipe! What is your experience of her content and what important issues does she raise? What is the key to her incredible following (4.4 million on TikTok, 1.7 million on Instagram and counting...)
https://www.tiktok.com/@alexisnikole?Links to an external site.
With an emphasis on vegan recipes, Nelson's postings cover a variety of subjects, including the history of American foraging legislation, the indigenous roots of foraging in America, and sustainable methods for her audience to eat more wild plants and mushrooms. I personally love her content and I find her videos to fall into a niche category that isn't necessarily so niche anymore! When I first discovered her page she had about 100k followers!
5. How do you define food sovereignty in your own life? Do you grow your own food? Do you forage? Compost? Did the pandemic change your food habits? How do you connect to the 'black gold' of soil? Have you ever volunteered at a community garden?
The term food sovereignty was a relatively new concept for me to put into words as I have no experience foraging, composting, or have any particular food habits that need special care. I would possibly like to volunteer sometime at a community garden as that has always appealed to me.
6. Choose one of the people mentioned in the article by Leah Thomas to profile with a one-paragraph bio.
Please include this bio in the thread below as well as on your blog.
Isaias Hernandez is a California-based educator and campaigner for environmental justice. His upbringing in a neighborhood that experienced environmental injustice affected the way he perceived the world. Because of his experiences, he founded the Queer Brown Vegan platform, an environmental educational page that addresses intersectional issues and social justice that aren't usually addressed in environmental contexts.

Week 3- Compassionate Leadership
1. What is Jacinda Ardern's legacy and impact as a compassionate leader?
Jacinda Ardern was a revolutionary leader who brought empathy, resilience, teamwork, and communication to New Zealand. Ardern personified a brand-new political philosophy known as a "politics of kindness." In both her COVID-19 response and resignation address, she made reference to the term kindness. Many people, especially women, were impressed by her leadership style and more broadly by her leadership.
2. How would you define compassionate leadership? Can power and empathy coexist?
A compassionate leader is one who is accepting of others, committed to growing personally in order to elevate both their own and their organization's awareness, and inquisitive about diversity in order to provide a secure environment.
Power and empathy can undeniably coexist with one another. It is all about balancing the two forces and unifying the central ideas and common themes of what being in power and being an empath means to the leader or their team.
3. Does the world need more female leaders? How could this change the world?
I believe there is always more room for strong female leaders in any space possible. Something about the feminine energy that is brought into these spaces is truly applaudable. I find that often times it is easier to find that balance that I previously mentioned when it comes to being a compassionate leader with women rather than men. This could be due to the more natural combined compassion and empathy that feminine energy holds in a "man's world". All women could potentially change their respective industries that may be male dominated while women leaders have the opportunity to literally change the scope of society and society's views.
4. Choose a leader from this list, provide a photo, a key quote, and a paragraph about how their empathetic and selfless actions have helped to redefine power and compassion and contributed to significant global impact.
Michelle Obama: "I am an example of what is possible when girls from the very beginning of their lives are loved and nurtured by people around them. I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life who taught me about quiet strength and dignity."
Tumblr media
Michelle Obama has consistently spoken with decency, honesty, dignity, and pride, demonstrating her great regard for both herself and other people. This also explains why, even though she is a Democrat, she respects and acknowledges the differences in viewpoints held by Republicans. Her dedication to eradicating childhood obesity and providing assistance to military families demonstrates that she not only reaches out to her community but also serves as an inspiration to young people, especially young African American women.
