“No worries, it’s pretty much my job to help people and pokemon in trouble. Well that’s not completely true, technically I’m a fieldworker for the professors so they can get more data on the pokemon I catch, but I still can’t leave someone injured like that. Speaking of which, thank you, Lady. You’ve been a massive help here.”

He gives the Gardevoir a thumbs up and returns her to her ball before hooking it back onto his belt.

“So, what brings you to these parts? Litten certainly isn’t a common starter in this particular region.”

“I’m studying the phenomena of alternately colored pokemon. Like Litten here. My current project is to record a color variant of every pokemon native to this region”

Rune explains as she strokes her pokemon. She starts walking back to the main trail. 

“You must be a good trainer. Gardevoir did just as you asked. You can tell a lot about someone by the way pokemon are around them”

“Good way to break a leg, messing around on one of those, but you don’t look that bad. Let’s see if I can’t patch you up.”

Yuichi grabs a luxury ball off his belt and releases a Gardevoir from it.

“Gar?”

“You mind using Heal Pulse on this woman? She’s a bit banged up.”

The Gardevoir rolls her eyes a bit and puts her hand on Rune’s forehead. It glows pink for a moment and then the pain clears up to a degree.

“Now Lady’s probably my best healer, but she’s not a replacement for an actual doctor. We should get you back to town so you can get looked at properly. You think you can walk on your own?”

Rune stands up and nods to Gardevoir. 

“Thank you. I think I can walk. My ankle is just a little tender” 

She picks Litten up in her arms. 

“So you’re a pokemon trainer. That’s really cool. My name is Rune, by the way. I appreciate your help”

“Hey, the little guy is looking out for you, you should be proud of him.”

He smiles towards Litten.

“Name’s Yuichi, I’m a professional trainer. Mind if I ask why he got worked up? If you’re hurt I can haul you back to town.”

Rune pet her Litten. 

“I’m Rune” 

She greets him. 

“And.. I am hurt actually.. Litten ran off to find help. These big rocks are slippery by the water”

Yuichi had been relaxing outside the Pokemon Center he had stayed at the night before when Litten came up to him. As it did, he leaned down to get on its level.

“I don’t speak pokemon, but I have the feeling you want me to help you with something, huh? Lead the way and I’ll follow, little guy.”

Litten led the way. Off the main path and down by a river. It looked back one more time to make sure he was still following. And then ran off into the distance. 

Rune sat on large rocks by the water. She perked up when Litten came into view. And waved to it. Litten came up to Rune and nuzzled against her. “Who is that? Did you get help? I said I didn’t need it” She scolded the creature.

Nishi smirked and dug in her bag, pulling out a book titled “Shinobi Doctor”. “Like any self respecting top writer, I do research! The main character had to relocate their partner’s shoulder after a pressure point from the enemy shinobi dislocated it! It’s easier than you think, but most people mess up by hesitating.”

“Wait so.. Had you even done that before?” A worrying thought. But then again, she did a fine job. “What are you going to do with all the stories you’ve written? You think.. I could look at one sometime?”

Elva speeds through changing into her costume, still having a bad feeling about this and this is a good way to check on Rune with minimal chance of revealing she was more than meets the eye. Elva slips out the other back entrance, her costume dulled to blend into the shadows. Quickly she scales the bar to get the roof and peers over the edge to where she last saw Rune and sees the approaching figures. Her lenses narrow slightly and the electrical lines in her suit lights up. “Wow, cornering a woman in the middle of the night ssuuuchhh a cliche.” Electricity crackles on the edges of her voice. There’s a difference in her stance that makes her seem taller than she actually is.

Rune closed her eyes and waited for her punishment to be over. But after a few seconds of waiting she opened them. She couldn’t think of what could be keeping them. But then she followed their gaze to the costumed newcomer. 

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” One of the thugs said. And his buddies chuckled. They all turned their attention towards the stranger. Rune struggled to her feet. using the dumpster to lean on.

Nishi sighs, rolling her eyes. “How do you dislocate your shoulder by yourself? Here!” She shoved a rolled up rag in Rune’s mouth before grabbing the arm to suddenly, and painfully, put it back in it’s socket.

Rune’s protests were muffled. She would have preferred to do it herself. But Nishi didn’t give her that choice. Rune spit out the rag. “I’m skilled I guess..” She rubbed her shoulder and sighed. “How do you know how to fix a dislocated shoulder?”

The general setup of the campsite would suggest that whoever was camping there did not actually know what they were doing. The tent was poorly assembled and the fire ring had plenty of evidence of someone trying to start a fire and failing terribly.

A rather angry eevee rushed onto the scene, hackles raised, trying to intimidate the litten. A tired-looking woman followed behind, carrying an armful of twigs.

“Vee… Oh. Hello there.”

“Get over here you garbage brat” Rune dove and grabbed her Litten by it’s tail. The pokemon in protest spun around and swipped at her. She released the creature and stood up. “Sorry about this.. She gets into things a lot.. So I’m more focused on keeping her out of trouble than where I’m going” Rune rubbed the back of her neck.

Following her into her apartment. It was rather messy to a certain degree. As she carried out the couple of drinks and gesturing him to come along to the couch, Jake shrugged as he went along with it. “What’s going through my mind right now? I’ve been invited over by the woman who saved my ass from the cops not to long ago. Figured to go along with it.” Jake replied in a straightforward manner. 

“Crazy as it might sounds for night city standards, I have a small code I try to follow. You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.” Jake shrugged as he gazed over to Rune. “So… here I am, I figured you’re willing to be an accomplice to help a person run away from the cops. So I’m all ears if you have something in mind.” 

“Scratch my back huh? You wanna repay me?” Rune cracked open her bottle and sipped it. She leaned back on the couch and rested her legs on the coffee table. Kicking some cans and bottles out of the way. And onto the floor. 

“If you’d like. You can be my security while I deep dive” She brought the bottle to her lips again and drank. “But I’d also like to get a closer look at that arm. Saka tech always catches my eye”

Elva makes note of the tension in Rune’s voice, and their eyes narrows slightly as they mull over what they can do in this situation. She knew that something was wrong but not what exactly. But Run had given her an opening to come back out as Blixt.

“I… If you say so… I don’t think you should be alone right now…” But Elva still leaves so she can quickly change.

Rune breathed a sigh of relief when she was gone. She knew she deserved this. No point in an innocent person getting caught up in it. Her mind wandered as her head spun. She couldn’t even remember what she did to piss them off. Probably the same thing she does to piss anyone off. 

A figure enters her line of sight. And she can tell they’re not alone. Three wouldn’t be enough on a good day. But she can’t tell how many there are. Rune balled her hands into fists. And the strangers drew closer.

“Stupid!” Nishi had an annoying look on her face, the type people had when they felt intellectually superior. Smug. “If  you wanna die so bad, why even fight? Cause there is honor in it? So tell me Rune, how much is that honor worth when a demon is picking your flesh from their teeth. Are you proud then? Would your parents be proud?”

She turned, giving an exaggerated shrug in response. “Know what I think? I think you aren’t strong enough to live without them. Even if you have to waste the life they gave you just to see them again. Go on, explain yourself. Tell me I’m wrong.”

“Not looking for honor. I just know how I do and don’t want to die” Rune shrugged. She was reading so much into it.. “My parents killed themselves. Fought their demons for as long as they could. And finally lost. I don’t wanna go that way. I don’t wanna end up killing myself. And that includes giving up and letting myself be killed. So even if I wanna die. I’ll fight to my last breath”

“Why kill off a character? Such a waste of potential!” Nishi held her finger up in front of her face in a matter of fact way. “I’m not completely without other motivations! I’m an author! I’ve learned so much by writing. So here is a free lesson!”

She pointed to Rune. “Killing off a character is lazy and the easy way out! By keeping them alive, you can utilize them in a future chapter!” She poked Rune’s nose with her finger. “Someone who wants to die while fighting back their hardest? Interesting character trait! But I think I need to help write you a better motivation. Easier ways to die in battle than fighting demons. I’ll figure you out yet!”

“What are you talking about?” Rune sighed. Nishi was making no sense. But surely she hadn’t lost that much blood. “Figure me out? There’s not much to figure out” Rune pushed Nishi’s finger from her face. 

“The reason why I want to die fighting.. Is because that’s how my parents died. But at the same time to ensure my death is different. What do you think? How’s that for motivation? ”
