✰✰✰ Le Tableau by Jean-François Laguionie ✰✰✰
A château, flowering gardens, a threatening forest, here is what, for mysterious reasons, a Painter has left incomplete. Three kinds of characters live in this painting: the Toupins, who are entirely painted, the Pafinis, who lack a few colors, and the Reufs, who are only sketches. Convinced that only the Painter can restore harmony by finishing the painting, Ramo, Lola, and Plume decided to go looking for him.

I was very impressed by Amazon’s press conference today. I went in thinking it’d be a single (as opposed to the whiffs by Nokia and especially Motorola the day before), but I ended up thinking it was actually a homerun. I already bought a Kindle Paperwhite.
But there’s one thing I’ve been...

Our Apple-loving compatriots on the west side of the Pacific Ocean have been able to purchase the latest in iPhone and iPad software from the App Store for a while, but believe it or not, they’ve been shut out of the iTunes Store. Apple has just opened the virtual iTunes...

The top picture is a data map indicating where known cases of acid attacks in Cambodia have occurred. Looks like the Prey Veng and Kandal provinces have had the highest attack rates. This map includes attacks from 2009 until June of this year.
The stigma associated with acid attack victims in Cambodia is so intense that many never report the crime in the first place, a reality that has led rights groups to label the actual tally of violence the “dark number”, according to a report released yesterday by the Cambodian Center for Human Rights. Apparently these reported attacks are just the tip of the iceberg.
In the 59 attacks reported, over half the victims are female.

Three months following US and EU approval, China has given Google's Motorola acquisition the green light. (WSJ)
Now that all of the regulatory red tape has been removed, Google say that the deal will be finalized on their end by early next week. Such a quick timeframe indicates that this was indeed the last barrier that Google needed to overcome in order to finalize things, having already received joint approval from the European Union and US Department of Justice back in February.

Workers at a large Cambodian garment factory that makes clothes for Levi’s, Gap and other well-known international brands are striking for more pay and better working conditions. (AP)
More than 5,000 workers from the Singaporean-owned SL Garment Processing (Cambodia) Ltd. failed to reach an agreement with their employers Tuesday to end an 11-day strike. The director of the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers said workers are demanding an increase in their $61 monthly salaries. He said they want a $5 salary hike and an extra $25 a month for transportation and housing. SL Garment’s website says it makes clothes for labels that include J. Crew, Banana Republic, H&M and Levi’s, whose website in turn lists the company as a supplier.
