honestly, I get why there are so many like guides and stuff for how to talk to people who are being abused without fucking up. they’re sensitive situations and our cultural messaging kind of sets people up to say the wrong things be default

but on another level, I feel like 90% of the tips basically reduce down to: “don’t condescend to them and act like they’re a brainwashed idiot child who doesn’t know enough about their own life to make the Correct™ choices”

I think it would help if people could just take a step back and internalize that the reason that you are not currently being abused isn’t because you’re smarter, or better, or have all the answers.. it’s just because you’re luckier. that’s all.

like I know that’s scary, to have to deal with the idea that there’s nothing inherent about you that will protect you from predatory and controlling people or from being trapped in unthinkably traumatic situations and having nothing but bad choices. but you’ve gotta unpack your feelings around it and make peace with that, or you’re going to end up being an asshole to survivors.

survivors don’t need you to impart your perfect wisdom on What They Should Do. they need you to listen, believe them, and help them get the resources they ask for to help them reach their own safety goals, whether or not you think those are the right ones. please be humble and understand that a person being abused knows more about the abuse and the risks involved in each choice than you do. as an ally, you’re there to help, support, & validate, not to “save” them.
