An Image of Eric Harris that would have been in the CHS 1999 Yearbook, but it was taken out before printing:
Tumblr media
“Casually strolling to his class, Senior Eric Harris sports the classic all black look, adding his personal touch with sunglasses and a sports watch … were a necessity for students who led busy lives and had to keep track of appointments and important dates in their schedules.”

few facts about the film Zero Day (2003):
•The characters Andre and Cal were originally named Avery and Thomas. Ben Coccio (the director) decided to use the actors actual names so their families wouldn’t have to remember a different name.
•In the party scene, Andre was originally going to be very social and friendly with everyone and they were going to sing happy birthday to him.
•In the Zero Day commentary track, Andre revealed he had a crush on Rachel when filming.
•Cals house in Zero Day was the actors real family house in Stratford, Connecticut. they moved out as of 2017.
•The eggs were not in either of the boys basements, it was actually Ben’s fathers basement.
•the scene of Andre laying in the pavement was filmed 2 months after the initial egging scene. Cal had been wearing different clothes, that’s why the camera never panned to him.
•Cal Robertson actually got his braces removed during the filming, and Ben wanted to record it and keep it in. In the scene, you can hear Ben’s voice talking instead of Andres.
•In the scene “who needs prozac when i got you dad?” made Cal laugh so hard, milk came out of his nose.
•Ben had to get Cal to film the diary entries, as Cal was uncomfortable speaking alone to a camera.
•This is the actual note Cal wrote to Chris

Things I noticed when rewatching zero day today:
We never knew how Brad Huff reacted to his house being egged lol
I dont think I ever saw them use their homemade pipe bombs
Andre had no video diaries. We only ever saw him with Cal or his family.
When Cal and Andre were putting in the last few tapes into the saftey deposit box, Cal counted the tapes in the box and came to the conclusion that there were 30 hours worth of tapes.

17-year-old Junko Furuta was a Japanese high school student who caught the attention of Hiroshi Miyano, a high school bully with connections to the Yakuza (Japan’s organised crime syndicates). On November 25, 1988, after Furuta turned him down, Miyano and three other teenage boys abducted her at knife point as she was walking home from school. They took Furuta to one of their homes in Tokyo and forced her to call her parents, telling them she had run away and was staying with a friend. From here on, Furuta was brutally tortured, using every method you could possibly imagine, for a total of 44 days.
Furuta is thought to have been raped about 500 times, with Miyano inviting Yakuza members over to the house to rape her. She was beaten, urinated on, burnt with cigarettes and lighters, forced to eat cockroaches and drink her own urine. The numerous items forced into Furuta’s vagina and anus included a bottle, scissors, lit fireworks and a lit light bulb, which exploded inside of her. Furuta was also forced to masturbate in front of her captors and their guests. When the parents of the boy who owned the house visited, she had to pretend to be one of the boys’ girlfriend. Even when it became apparent that she was being held against her will, neither parent raised the alarm out of fear of Miyano and his connections to the Yazuka.
Soon Furuta lost the ability to breathe through her nose and would vomit whenever she ate or drank, prompting her attackers to viciously beat her. After an attempt to alert the police, Furuta was horrifically burnt and a large bottle was inserted into her anus, causing internal injury and bleeding. After 20 days of abuse, Furuta could no longer walk. After 30 days, she could not urinate properly, her ear drums were damaged and her brain size was reduced.
Over the course of her 44 days in captivity, Furuta had begged her captors to kill her and put her out of her misery. However, they did not want to put an end to her suffering. On January 4, 1989, after winning a game of Mahjong solitaire, Furuta was subjected to one final attack. She was set upon with an iron barbell and her legs, arms, face and stomach were set alight. She fell into a state of shock and died the following day. Her body was stuffed into an oil drum, which was then filled with concrete and disposed of in a vacant lot in Koto, Tokyo. It was discovered a few weeks later.
The four perpetrators were arrested and tried as adults, but due to the fact that they were underage during the commission of the crime their identities were concealed by the court. When considering the horrific nature of the crime, all four were given appallingly lenient sentences, the most severe being 17 years imprisonment. Although, when three of the boys attempted to appeal their sentences, the judge ended up increasing the sentences instead. All four of the perpetrators have now been released.

a pretty old Japanese video I found documenting the funeral of Junko Furuta on youtube. it’s pretty obscure and I’m kind of going down a rabbit hole of old Japanese news reports on Junko’s case.

A 43-year-old German man, Christian Brueckner who travelled around Portugal in a camper van is now the focus of Scotland Yard’s investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann 13 years ago.
Police believe the man, now in jail for a sex crime, was in the area where the girl, then aged three, was last seen.
Madeleine’s parents Gerry and Kate McCann thanked the police, adding: “All we have ever wanted is to find her.”
Police are appealing for information about two vehicles owned by the man.
The day after Madeleine vanished, the suspect transferred a Jaguar car to someone else’s name.
Madeleine went missing from an apartment on a Portuguese holiday resort on the evening of 3 May 2007, while her parents were with friends at a nearby tapas bar.
Her disappearance sparked a huge and costly police hunt across much of Europe - the most recent Metropolitan Police investigation, which began in 2011, has cost more than £11m.
“Someone out there knows a lot more than they’re letting on,” said Det Ch Insp Mark Cranwell, who is leading the Met inquiry.
The force said it remained a “missing persons” investigation because it does not have “definitive evidence” as to whether Madeleine is alive or not.

something that’s been on my mind for the past couple days is how in an october 1998 entry of erics journal, page 6 of the transcripted version, he wrote:
Tumblr media
“I have a goal to destroy as much as possible so I must not be sidetracked by my feelings of sympathy, mercy, or any of that, so I will force myself to believe that everyone is just another monster from Doom like FH [Former Human, mob in Doom] or FS [Former Sergeant] or demons, so it’s either me or them. I have to turn off my feelings.”
-
erics description of what i presume to be a level of disassociation into a fantasy/numb world in order to fulfill NBK is something i sometimes forget about. along with his basement tape statements, “I wish I was a fucking sociopath so I didn’t have any remorse, but I do.” and “To all you coolios out there still alive, sorry I hurt you or your friends.”, as well as the depiction “Harris says he wishes he could have re-visited Michigan and “old friends.” He falls silent then and appears to start crying, wiping a tear from the left side of his face. He shuts the camera off.” we can see bits and pieces of the reality behind his mentality. we all know his journals and “reb” persona were mostly crafted for the media; to create an intimidating persona that makes up for the treatment he faced in school and out. in my opinion, these are important things to remember. along with his letters, saying that he’s used to being ignored, and how, following the theft, his parents lost all trust in him, it provides a window into the real mind of eric harris that he desperately tried to conceal, and how the difference between eric and dylan is not as substantial as presumed at first glance. rather than seeing eric as raging, ruthless, and apathetic, i think it’s clear he had a lot of tough emotions that he didn’t know how to process properly, which resulted in extreme anger management issues and suicidality, similar to dylan. i know this isn’t a very articulated, deep concept but it’s just a string of thoughts.
please note: i am not in any way minimizing what he did on 4/20/99 by attempting to paint him as a sweet sad boy. i am not throwing his anger under the rug. i acknowledge the rage he had, but also understand that there was much more to his situation. he made the decision to shoot up his school, and nothing can make that better.

21 years ago today two young boys set into a motion a plan a year in the making, to kill as many as possible in a bombing attempt at their highschool in Littleton, Colorado. Thankfully this did not occur, but it was not the end of the violence. The boys went on to kill 13 innocent children and one teacher. Their actions would reshape the foundation of America as we know it, and birth a new breed of violence, the mass school shooting. But these two young boys were not monsters, they were not cold-blooded psychopaths, but two sick, confused, and blindingly angry children who saw no way out of their self hatred and hopelessness other than violence and eventual suicide. To me this day is not for them, but for the victims, though it shouldn't be forgotten that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were victims in their own right. Remember and honor the 13, but don't forget to acknowledge our failure on behalf of them and the children who took their lives.
