Laroc and Alok teamed up for yet another sold-out event
Based in the hidden hills of Valinhos, 100 kilometers from São Paulo City, the #12 club in the world, Laroc, opened its door once again last Saturday (May 7th, 2022) to accommodate over 5.000 people in a night that was 100% sold out.
Once again cementing Laroc’s unmatched success as one of the biggest landmarks of the global EDM scene, the club invited the DJ Mag #4 DJ in the world, Alok, alongside a supporting lineup packed with a fresh combination of established hitmakers like Santti and young rising stars like Almanac and Kohen.
To rise even higher on DJ Mag’s prestigious Top 100 lists is a common goal of Laroc and Alok, making this event a partnership made in heaven. Both the artist and the club did everything in their power to craft a memorable night that will undoubtedly create a lasting impact on every single attendee.
Laroc is arguably one of the most incredible clubs to ever debut in the global dance music scene. Not because it has the most capacity, or the largest stage, but because Laroc’s team is able to combine the energy of a huge festival with the intimacy of clubs into each experience, making up for a unique vibe that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Uma publicação compartilhada por Laroc Club (@larocclub)
The 7-year-old club is on the brink of breaking into the Top 10 of DJ MAG Top 100 Clubs rank, and it doesn’t shy away from the pressure. Laroc recently announced that they will be the exclusive venue for Hardwell’s comeback tour for his brand new album ‘Rebels Never Die;’ an event that has the potential to be one of the biggest nights in the club’s history.
We had the opportunity to speak with Thiago Grazioli, Laroc’s Artists Director. Check out what he had to say about Alok, Laroc and Hardwell:
“It was a very important night for Laroc, to welcome Alok once again, this time as the 4# DJ in the World was indeed incredible. The night was a complete success: a full house with over 5 thousand people that got together to experience a generational talent that is Alok. It was very interesting to see how creative and precise Alok has become when it comes to conducting his set,
not to mention the incredible production team behind his performance, a truly breathtaking experience. And that’s exactly what we expect for such a big act.”
“It is absolutely essential that we have Hardwell for his comeback tour at Laroc. Hardwell’s evolution resonates deeply with Laroc, and seeing how his set at Ultra Miami sounded like, we just knew that we had to bring that energy to Brazil. It is not easy to make such a big transition from what he used to play to what he is doing at the moment, and it is incredible to see Hardwell exploring new things. Surely, this transition will be a milestone to his career and for the whole EDM scene.” – Thiago Grazioli, Laroc’s Artist Director

Your EDM Premiere: Game Changer ‘Alert’ – Misanthrop Creates a Whole New ‘Universe’ With New Album [Neosignal]
It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since Analog, Misanthrop’s last stunner of an album, where the German producer taught the largely digitized D&B world a little something about the joys of mods. That said, since we all know COVID years don’t count, it’s really more like 18 months. In an interview with UKF, Misanthrop said that he used the largely show-less COVID time to play even more with his experimental side and, inspired by a couple of unfinished tracks from Analog, Universe was born from that weird pandemic time warp. It’s quite fitting, really.
From the album intro “It’s Okay,” that time warp feel is real as is the experimental composition, as the beatless track features a host of old-timey, vintage sounds; either actual old sound and music loops (you just know Misanthrop has a stack of those) distorted a bit further along with actual clock sounds and a healthy bit of drone and ambient sound design. It announces to the listeners that Universe will not be your average drum & bass album, but that’s literally always true with Misanthrop.
“Jupiter” follows “It’s Okay” and is one of the unfinished Analog tracks and has some similar synths so it’s a good tie-in, connecting 2019 to 2022. It’s still quite different in a lot of ways from the sound of Analog, however, with minimal, tick-tocky drums and a whole chaotic crunchy synth that takes over halfway through and sort of devours the Analog-era stuff. Meanwhile, creepy and ominous vintage sound design plagues the intro and breaks, creating almost a gothic and emotive feel even while the synths are futuristic it’s almost too much. The chaos of the giant planet Jupiter gives this track its namesake and sends the listener through a sonic black hole to this new Universe.
The album doesn’t back down from “Jupiter” in terms of chaotic organized noise, so listeners better have got their bearings in that black hole. The halftime beat of “Undo” just means Misanthrop can pack in more madness, static and eerie space sounds. Spaghettification, anyone? From there, “Into the Sun” is bit of relief with a surprisingly vibey, almost liquid (did we just use the term “liquid” in a Misanthrop review?) and musical tune, which, even though Misanthrop said he didn’t write this album for the dancefloor, will likely see its fair share of play during sunrise or sunset festie sets. This track midway through the album is a clear surrender and ties the two halves together. One probably would have to surrender in some way if one was being shot into the sun.
From there the chaos is somewhat stymied, with “Jitters” and “Triumph” more recognizably drum & bass, the slow techno of “Off Course” bringing some much appreciated atmospherics and album closer “Galaxy” a rolling, Tron-like rebirth of sound after the madness of the first half of the album. But there’s one track from that first half still looming.
Our YEDM premiere is “Alert,” another of the unfinished Analog tracks and easily the most recognizable early Misanthrop tie-in on the album. Lashings of “Desert Orgy” and “Sex Sells” will make neuro fans happy, although this track is decidedly not neuro. A bit of a respite amid all the experimental chaos of the first half of Universe, “Alert” is emotive, evocative and intense but doesn’t have all the harsh lines of “Jupiter” or “Undo.” It’s another solid dance track amongst all the experimental work of this album.
youtube
No one would blame a listener for taking a bit of time to listen to Universe; it’s a thinker of an album that’s meant to be considered as much as listened to. It’s still quite danceable, however, with tracks like “Alert” and “Into the Sun” likely already being played on dancefloors and punters wondering trying to track ID. Fear not, Misanthrop’s new Universe is almost here.
Universe drops this Friday on Misanthrop and Phace’s Neosignal imprint. Click here to pre-order or pre-save.

Dream Tonic Drops Ethereal Downtempo / Electronic Inspired ‘Essence’ EP
Dream Tonic (Kristin Allen-Farmer) is a San Diego based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music producer. In addition to performing and recording, she writes music for film and TV, with her latest tracks being featured in the new Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Adventure hotel at Disney World! She pairs a lifetime of being a classically trained pianist with her love of electronic dance music and the result is incredible.
Kristin is also a member of the Class of 808, an elite squad of EDM producers who release music under the Producer Dojo label, founded by prestigious bass music pioneer, ill.Gates. Out today is Dream Tonic’s brand new EP, ‘Essence‘, signed to Producer Dojo. It’s a downtempo masterpiece, delivering a sensational ride you don’t want to get off of.
“Spark” kicks off the EP in cinematic fashion as sustained piano chords help set the mood and platform the vocal work from Kristin. “Loving’s Coming Down On Me” follows, with blissful melodies and a driving back beat co-produced by Ill Gates. “Step Inside My Mind” is sheer beauty, perfectly balancing breathy vocals with a downtempo beat that feels reminiscent of Beach House.
“Stranded” is sonic ear candy, as various effects play on Kristin’s vocals and the synths that pulse in and out. Hello Ego’s remix to “Promise Of A Day” caps off the EP wonderfully, injecting a smooth experimental bass groove that exudes a trippy nature, giving the feeling of something that could really go off at a festival.
“Story around the song: Although this entire EP has songs of darkness intermingled with hope, there is one particular song – “Spark” – that stands out to me. When I wrote Spark, I was in the middle of going through a very dark time. I had recently lost a person that I loved very much in a sudden and unexpected way. I felt like I was living in a black hole with no way out. Then I remembered that there are people around me who love me, who are still living, and that they need me to emerge, to come out and be my fullest, truest self. This song is a testament to anyone who loves someone and serves as their mirror, reminding them of the fullness of their beauty and potential when they can’t remember it themselves. “ – Dream Tonic

SEXPAYS Returns With Sizzling Track, ‘CLUBKILLER9000’
We still don’t know who SEXPAYS is, but what we do know is that he’s a force to be reckoned with in the studio. His talent at creating sizzling house beats that seamlessly infuse the roots of the genre with a 2022 twist is impeccable. It’s just a matter of time before he starts really blowing up over the house circuit.
Now, he’s back with his third single, “CLUBKILLER9000“, and we can safely say it lives up to the name. After a thirty second intro, he comes guns blazing with infectious four-on-the-floor rhythms and basslines that are easy to eat up.
If you can imagine Daft Punk, Green Velvet, and Claude VonStroke all getting in the studio together, “CLUBKILLER9000” would be the result. Check it out below!

CAZZETTE, Electric Polar Bears, & The Ready Set Come Together For Summery Anthem, “Cloudy Heart”
After making waves in 2021 with a string of releases, teaming up with some of the industry’s most sought-after producers and vocalists like Paris Hilton, Nitti Gritti, tyDi, and Naz Tokio, as well as performing at various festivals including a performance at Paris Hilton’s wedding party – the playful and mysterious masked duo Electric Polar Bears return with their newest single, “Cloudy Heart” featuring CAZZETTE and The Ready Set.
It’s a match made in heaven between these three talented artists. The Ready Set are one of the most iconic emo/pop-punk acts around, and hearing them on top of a club track just feels right. CAZZETTE have enjoyed an immensely successful career thus far, and helped infuse this summertime anthem with their signature, high energy sound. It plays perfectly off of EPB’s dynamic, playful sound to create a truly memorable single.
Here’s what CAZZETTE had to say about it:
“Cloudy heart was a joy to work on. Everyone involved has been so great and it was really fun building a song from the ground up with the team involved. It’s rare for me to create instrumentals in its entirety today and have talented vocalists write and sing on it afterwards. I usually start with the vocal and build the music around it which is the opposite in this case. The song brings me back to my earlier days in dance music and it’s incredible that the workflow also represents the way I worked back then. I’m happy presenting this throwback gem (according to me) with everyone.”

Famba Dives Into Tech House Realm w/ Cloverdale For Heater, “Rush On Me” + Interview [SOLOTOKO]
Canadian artist Famba might just be one of the most versatile producers out there. He’s successfully done the commercial house sound, accomplishing tens of millions of streams across DSPs as well as two RIAA Certified gold records in Canada and a number one at Dance Radio in the US with “Storm ft. Kyra Mastro.” He’s been teasing deeper, more tech house productions via social media that have had us on the edge of our seat, excited to hear these songs in full.
Cloverdale, who believe it or not was Famba’s former neighbor in Halifax, has also been on a roll, amassing multiple Top 10s on Beatport’s overall chart and has graced the decks at esteemed festivals such as Electric Daisy Carnival and Ile Soniq.
Now, the two have come together to create a sizzling tech house single, “Rush On Me“, signed to Sonny Fodera’s prestigious SOLOTOKO imprint. A soulful vocal sits on top as a insatiable four on the floor groove drives underneath. As Cloverdale puts it, “In the end we got a killer collab between two long time homies that we’re both super proud of.“
We had a few minutes to speak with Famba about where he’s at this year and this single. Check it out below!
“Rush On Me” is a big departure from the style of songs you’re known for. What’s the backstory of it?
Like a lot of people, during lockdown, I had a lot of time to reflect on where I wanted to take my music. I started making new music that I was genuinely excited about, and it just felt natural. I’m such a big House-head and it’s been incredibly fun to be making house music again.
What does this mean in terms of the style of music you’ll be releasing going forward?
I’ve been working on creating a sound for myself, and it all started coming together in the last couple of months. If I were to describe it, I would say… Melodic, Progressive, and Driving. It’s important to me that all of this new music will be listenable in the car, but also bangs in the club.
You’re booked to play Chasing Summer in July, how will this new musical direction influence your live sets?
If you’ve ever heard my sets before, things are going to be much different! I really want to put a focus on creating an incredibly fun, driving and melodic set. For the first time ever I’ll be playing a ton of my own music, with plenty of unreleased tracks. It’s such an exciting time for me, because a lot of my past music just didn’t work in my own sets.
I heard you just returned from a month of being in Europe? What was that experience like?
Europe was incredible! It was the first time I truly felt like an artist with a clear direction. I wrote my favourite songs of all time during the writing trip. I think going into a foreign country and getting immersed in the music and another culture is so inspiring. I absolutely wouldn’t have had the mental stamina to do sessions every day for a month back home.
Who are some of your wish-list collaborators?
Number one for me will always be Calvin Harris. I’ve also been a huge fan of Gorgon City and Disclosure. They just never miss!

Shane 54 Is Pioneering A New Way To Make Music Videos With AI Technology
Web3, The Metaverse, Crypto, NFT’s…  we all hear these worlds nearly on a daily basis. The world is evolving at rapid pace and artists are joining. Whether it was Justin Boretta teaming up with Aaron Penne for their Generative Art and music project, or Steve Aoki spearheading the NFT movement in the dance music community, it is clear to see that technology and the music industry are now linked more than ever.
There’s another artist who’s enjoyed immense success over the past 30 years. Whether that be the frontman of a Hungarian pop group, one half of legendary trance duo, or producing beautiful progressive and trance  music under his solo project, Shane 54 managed to continue to pioneer new ways for people to experience his music.
What do we mean by that? Well, he’s using AI technology to create music videos and the result is jaw dropping.
“I’ve been making animated music videos for over a year now: I did some for other artists just as well for my own music. Oddly enough my first ever animation got shortlisted for “Best Animated Music Video” at the Hungarian Music Awards in 2021. (I didn’t win, but THAT would’ve been a miracle I guess)
The past few months spent exploring AI image creating technologies. I quickly got sucked into it: became part of a hot new movement in art, which naturally lead me wanting to use my newly found art in my music videos..
youtube
When he started, it took months of experimenting – and failing. Nothing was working the way he envisioned it.
“The first problem with using a brand new technology like this, is EVERYTHING looks fantastic and fresh. You create awesome visuals. Then – as soon as your tool’s new version comes out – your previous works all of a sudden start to look less cutting edge. Then it’s outdated faster than you could say ‘Björk’.”
Then he realized, with a separate app for animation, he could avoid the cliches that were so easy to fall for when creating AI videos.
“The idea was to create every single element of the video with MidJourney (my current favourite AI tool), creating a collage that is coherent like no other. THEN animate it. Even though it was a stupidly simple idea, the impact it had on my work is unbelievable…
I truly was able to create my own, unique world with a lion-headed king, magic carpet, castle in the sky, and anything I could think of. Using the right keywords and modifiers makes the images look well-textured / aged, so very little post processing needed in the end: it was lightning fast, and visually provided me literally everything I wanted.”
Although he does not think himself to  be a filmmaker in a traditional sense, he is undoubtedly creating a new visual experience to pair with music that has an absolutely unique look, and a story to tell.
“The worldwide AI community is pioneering an art form that’s so new and groundbreaking, that most of the old rules and labels don’t apply here. New methods and techniques getting released on a weekly basis, and it’s not an exaggeration. I’m extremely happy to be a part of this movement, giving me the opportunity to fuse music, art and filmmaking the way I always envisioned. It’s unbelievable really.”

Fedde Le Grand Drops Groovin’ New Tech House Track “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You”
Fedde Le Grand is back with another groovy new track, “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You.” Following from his previous release “Heaven” with Robert Falcon, “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You” sees the veteran producer/DJ go deeper into the tech-house realm. Featuring a catchy bassline, old school bass synths, and a hypnotic vocal refrain, “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You” is sure to light up the floors at after-hours around the world.
This track is more of a stripped back affair for Fedde Le Grand. The production is fairly minimal. A four-on-the-floor beat propels most of the song, the vocals lend a nice touch and the drop lends it a nice, old school feel with its droning bass synths. “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You” is an undeniable house hit, and a track that is sure to make its way into sets all summer long.
Listen to the latest from Fedde Le Grand, “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You” out now on Darklight Recordings.

Jason Ross Drops Emotional New Single “Hate This Kind of Love”
Fresh off the heels of his sunrise set at EDC Las Vegas, Jason Ross has just dropped his latest single, “Hate This Kind of Love” featuring HOLT. Out now on Seven Lions’ Ophelia imprint, “Hate This Kind of Love” is the perfect blend of melodic bass, progressive house, and of course, vocals that will make you feel some kind of way.
Featuring soaring progressive melodies, “Hate This Kind of Love” is a gut-wrencher of a song about a mildly toxic relationship that you just can’t seem to break free from. Just because someone hurt you, doesn’t mean you’re ready to say goodbye to them; seems to be the general sentiment of the song. When HOLT repeats “I hope you hate being lonely too” you can feel the pang in the lyrics.
On top of the song release, Jason has just announced his biggest headline show to date at the Hollywood Palladium on August 26. Get your tickets here.
Check out Jason Ross’ latest, “Hate This Kind of Love” featuring HOLT, out now on Ophelia.

Nicky Romero Shows Off New Sonic Style with Perception EP
Nicky Romero is back with a new EP, Perception, that sees the Dutch producer/DJ go back to his roots by taking on a more house-driven sound. The EP features two new tracks, “Hear Me Now” and “Work My Body”, as well as two previously released singles, “Pressure” and “Lose My Mind” which both featured prominently in Nicky’s Ultra Miami set this year.
Both new tracks vibe perfectly with the previously released ones. “Hear Me Now” could easily be a track under Nicky’s Monocule alias with soulful vocals over low-end synths and a nasty tech-house drop. “Work My Body” sees Nick sort of blending his more tech-house sound with almost a Future Rave vibe.
It’s been great to see veteran producers explore new (or in this case, older) sounds and incorporate them into their sets and libraries. Nicky Romero is no exception. Here’s what he had to say about Perception
“Over the past years, I’ve been producing different kinds of genres within dance music. At the beginning of 2022, I went back to my roots and started to try out producing more groovy and house-y tracks. When I could play Ultra Music Festival again this year as the first major festival after two years, I wanted to drop ‘Pressure,’ ‘Lose My Mind,’ and ‘Work My Body’ to see the main stage crowd’s reaction. The reception of these three tracks was truly amazing, so I couldn’t wait to go back to the studio to work on more music, and this is when I produced ‘Hear Me Now,’ which perfectly concludes the ‘Perception’ EP”
Check out the latest from Nicky Romero, Perception, out now on Protocol.

Your EDM Premiere: Tengu Gears up the ‘Virtual Reality’ Machine With Some Summer Bangers [Korsakov Music]
Don’t let the intro of the title track for Virtual Reality, Tengu’s first solo multi-track since 2020’s Comin’ In Tough LP fool you. The light, lilting, slightly vintage synths drop into the Brighton producer’s trademark madness soon enough, and then it’s running basslines, crunchy synths and jumpy rollers from start to finish on his new Virtual Reality EP, out this week on Korsakov Music.
Tengu has always had an ability to combine light, ravey elements with dirty, heavy bass and neuro flourishes in a way that doesn’t sound hokey or try-hard, and Virtual Reality is no exception. The hookup with dancefloor imprint Korsakov Music is timely as well, as after Tengu released a track on the Dutch label’s Future Stars compilation last year that was wildly popular, it seemed only a matter of time before an EP was due. With summer festie season about to begin in earnest, these tracks are likely to see even more play, and rightfully so.
The ravey, Tron-like synths follow Virtual Reality through all its tracks, so it’s obvious there’s a theme here. On second track “Rayquaza” one might even call the synths so ravey that they’re progressive, that is until the second drop, where a chunky af synth takes over and pushes the track into epic dancefloor/neuro vibes. Seeing as it’s named after a similarly epic Pokémon, the progression of this track seems fitting. The EP’s closer “Cell”, by contrast, is all chunky synths and has a more ominous vibe than its predecessors. Perhaps signifying an epic VR battle, the script is flipped here a bit, with the synths sounding very modern but the drums and snares having a fun, starburst throwback vibe.
The title track to Virtual Reality is our YEDM premiere today and despite its very vintage, keys-from-Kyrie-by-Mr. Mister vibe, that balance between light and dark, sublime and heavy is present, with loads of interesting sine wave manipulation and ambient sound design that really introduces the theme of the EP nicely. The highs and bass flow together nicely here, and if we’re talking balance, it probably is the most balanced track. That means it’ll probably be the most played this summer, as it will mix well with loads of different styles and genres.
Korsakov Music · Virtual Reality
While all Tengu’s releases over the past few years (usually on Southampton UK label YosH) have this lovely balanced quality that works well with different mixes, it seems he’s dialing that style in even more lately, and it will likely serve him well. With Korsakov Music and its Future Stars series as a pretty decent predictor, fans can expect to see a lot more of Tengu in the coming months and years.
Virtual Reality drops this Friday, June 3 on Korsakov Music. Click here to pre-order or pre-save.
