It was simple in these moments. When the world faded away to silence. Just the sounds of their home echoing. The rain as it hit the window, the fire in the fire place. Just simple. A man and a woman.
It was here she fell so swiftly into a dream that felt as if it were real...... a chance to say good bye to Michael even if only a dream. When she woke, she'd ask G if she could burn the file, the final act of letting go.
When Wendy rested her head against his chest, Gareth shifted as well, moving until he was half-lying, half-sitting, leaned against the sofa's cushions. Arms still around her, fingers splayed on her back. It was in those quiet moments he realised what was at stakes whenever he went to work; why he was doing his job. Why the world needed protection. That world, for him, was Wendy.

It was not a strange thing between them. Silence. They did not need words or the trimmings of conversation. In that peace they knew and understood one another. She understood the struggle G must be enduring knowing that he had brought grief to her, and yet the resolution of so much pain and struggle of not knowing. He knew Wendy could not encourage him in his desire to protect, but nor could she beg him to run the other way. To not be a hero.
What they had was understanding, love, comfort, home in one another however it was formed. That bond was unbreakable.
Shifting back to law upon his chest, she kissed his cheek softly before laying her head down to listen to the steady rhythm of his heart beat, and breathing. It was her greatest comfort knowing how many times she had nearly lost him, or that she could at any moment. It was the reminder he was there with her.
He gently rubbed his hands over Wendy’s back, trying to soothe her a bit. Give her comfort. Perhaps she was right. Perhaps she wouldn’t have understood back then; but when had it changed? When she had got together with him?
Protecting people – it was their nature. In their blood. His as much as hers, and Michael had been no different. And somehow Gareth believed she wouldn’t ever tell him to stop. Frankly, Gareth didn’t know what to say now. Anything felt wrong, like a record played again and again. So instead he just tightened his grip on Wendy.

His voice warmed her, but didn't calm her fear of losing him to his desire to protect. Memories of him jumping in front of a shooter on live tv at a defense hearing flooding her memory. Though she couldn't judge. How often has she been attacked by a patient stepping between them and another nurse.
"No...." she shook her head softly. "We.....I wouldn't have understood then." she corrected herself. "He protected what he loved....... Just as I would have. As you would have I'm sure had you been given the chance."
Back then, at the time of his capture, he and Wendy had just been friends – albeit with feelings for each other they both had kept secret. It would have been easier for her to get over him if he had died then. Or so he thought. Now, however, things looked different. Now he couldn’t just decide to sacrifice his life for someone else; he had to put his entire life and Wendy into consideration. They weren’t just two people in a relationship – they were one.
His gaze found Wendy’s, and Gareth shook his head. “I’m sorry, I—” He sighed. “I’m sorry you had to learn about your brother like this. They should have told your family face to face back then.”

“I have a strange feeling with regard to you. As if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly knotted to a similar string in you. And if you were to leave I'm afraid that cord of communion would snap. And I have a notion that I'd take to bleeding inwardly. As for you, you'd forget me.”

The way her body immediately shot up to look at him, despair in her eyes. Wendy understood the burden G had when it came to what he had endured, and knew more than most realized just how deep those scars ran.
"Gareth....." his name a whisper. The memories flooding of those months had had simply been missing. As Michael's sister she knew what had happened, at the time G and Wendy? She wouldn't have been entitled to any information.
She wanted to tell him not to ever say that, but she knew the guilt he carried. Wendy also knew that he'd go back and trade his life for that of his team in an instant. Torn was what she felt. The last thing Wendy wanted, or could endure was Gareth abandoning her to sacrifice for those he led but it was one of the reasons she loved him so.
But perhaps it should have been Michael, not him. It should have been Michael and his team, not just his team. It should have been Gareth's team - not just Gareth. But the past couldn't be changed. The clock couldn't be turned back. Those things had happened, and they all had to live with it.
It was only a crumb of comfort to know that he was still alive, and Michael wasn't. It was unfair, wasn’t it? “I should have been in his place.” The words had slipped him before Gareth was able to stop himself.

Confessing & Leading To A Confession Dialogue Prompts
“Look, I know I’m not what your dream partner would’ve looked like, but I think we could work.”
“Fuck, I… I think I’m in love with you.”
“This is gonna sound crazy, but what if we… y’know got together?”
“Whenever I see you with someone else I can’t help but feel hurt."
“There isn’t anyone else but me! I’m the one!”
"There's a reason why I kissed you, idiot."
“No, wait, I have something to tell you.”
"I don't know... but I feel a lot of different things when I look at your face."
“How could you be so blind? I’m right here.”
"Don't make me say it out loud."
"My attention is always undivided for you"
"There's something I've been keeping from you."
"You already know what I'm about to say."
"I want to be more than what this is."
"I don't go around telling everyone these things you know."
"It's real this time. Not a fleeting love."
"You're my priority."
"Don't feel ashamed, it's mutual."
"But I don't want them, I want you."
"You need me just as much as I need you."
"Our future-- or-- I mean..."
"Is that door locked properly?" "Yeah." "Okay, I need to get this off my chest now."
"Sorry I've been avoiding you. I knew we couldn't see each other if I couldn't keep myself under control."
"It's not your fault I got all these ideas in my head."
"Maybe I'm crazy, but I started to imagine what I'd do without you and I really couldn't"
"Just promise to return I have something I need to share with you."
"Had I known all this would've happened, I would've told you the truth from the start."
"I was thinking about it and I've decided it's best if I just told you everything."

The simple promise, broke the flood gates of the emotions Wendy had been keeping at bay. The tears slowly forming, and starting to flow before she finally just broke. Anger, grief, truth..... it was a strange mix. The memories of every injury in G's chart, how similar they had been and yet G was here and Michael was not.
G had lost his entire team....... Michael had saved his. The realization hitting her that even G would be affected by the way her brother died she nuzzled in even further. His own heart beat giving her strength, something to ground her.
"I couldn't save Michael........ but...... because of Michael...... I got to save you."
He nearly missed her words, almost freezing when he understood what Wendy had said. It was a promise he couldn't give her; they all had to die eventually, it was the course of nature, it was necessary. And he couldn't even promise her he wouldn't die before her, though certainly he was going to do his best - even if that meant the rest of his heart would be ripped right out of his chest if he had to live through Wendy's eventual death...
Very gently he placed his chin on top of her head, holding her close to him. What was he supposed to answer now, though? "You...won't have to bury me," Gareth promised instead.

The loss of his hand was not missed as he folded her into him. The file now forgotten as it fell to the floor. Her own arms wrapping around him in a hug as she clung to him like a pillow.
"Don't ever die...." she begged him softly. She knew what she was asking, the promise he can't keep. Knowing that she was asking him to endure losing her.... before she could lose him..... but in reality, Wendy prayed they were that stupid romantic cliché of dying of old age..... together holding one another in their bed.
No, of course not. This was the last thing she wanted to hear right now, and Gareth chastised himself silently for being to tactless and stupid. He just nodded his head, swallowing, before he tightened his grip around Wendy.
Gareth shook his head again. “I’m sorry,” he said quietly before letting go of Wendy’s hand, only to wrap his other arm around her as well instead. “I’m sorry.”

"Please....." Wendy pleaded shifting to look up into his eyes, and stay in his embrace. "Don't...... not yet...."guilt spread across her features. "I'm too....." she wasn't sure how to admit that she was angry at Michael for being a hero, for doing what he needed to save lives. To protect his family in uniform.
She was ashamed in her anger, but in truth? Wendy had imagined a far worse fate for her brother than sacrificing himself. He went on his own terms, and that is all she could have hoped for.
Gareth didn't know how long they had been sitting like this in silence, and frankly, he didn't care. He would sit here with Wendy as long as she needed him to, even if that meant until the next morning. Only when she spoke, her voice so soft and quiet, he finally dragged his gaze and thoughts away from the file in her hands, and over to Wendy. Thank him? For what? Bringing even more pain? Bringing the truth and destroying perhaps a better imagination of what had happened to her brother at the same time?
He shook his head, squeezing her hand. "He was a hero," Gareth said quietly. "He did what...he had to do. What was right."

Wendy was not sure how long she had been sitting there numb..... it had been at least an hour.
Thousands of things had run through her head, and strangely the first thing she felt wasn't sorrow, or grief.... but rage. She was angry at her brother for doing what she would have done. Sacrifice herself for those around her. It was irrational but she could have helped him..... had he made it to her hospital like she helped Gareth she could have helped Michael....... but he had to be what it was she loved. Himself.
But she was angry... at least she was beginning to feel.
"Thank you......" her voice finally breaking the silence. She knew what it must have taken for G to even bring that to her. The rules he was breaking, given that it was the fully unredacted report being read by a civilian.
No answer - but he didn't need one. Didn't blame her. Reading through this file had been a lot, and Wendy first had to process it. Hell, he had to process it as well. It would take a while, perhaps days, perhaps years - and Gareth was going to be there for Wendy, every single second of them.
And now, he was going to stay with her, not move from her side, until she told him to. If she wanted a drink - he would go to get her one. If she didn't, he would stay just as he was, with one arm wrapped around her, and his other hand holding onto hers.

It had been a decision that nearly destroyed Wendy, and yet instilled pride in both her and Lieutenant Colonel Gareth Mallory. Not the head of the SAS, but the soldier and father. It was strange to see him leave. Reminding her so much of his namesake..... young, naive, and willing to lay everything on the line for Queen and Country.
Now? He was the spitting image of the man she loved.
44 weeks had turned her little one, into an officer. G in full dress, and Wendy had come to the ceremony surprising a few that the head of Mi6 would be present, Michael having used his mothers maiden name to hide his parentage.
After the pomp and circumstance had concluded, 2nd Lieutenant Darling sought his parents. But before Wendy could run to embrace her son as she had longed to do since he left? Michael Arthur saw his father in full dress and snapped to attention and gave him a crisp salute.
Wendy froze, her heart swelling at the image in front of her. Their son...... saluting his father and awaiting for the return salute to break rank and hug his family.

Even after all these years, he realised, the ceremony hadn’t changed a bit. Still the same uniforms, the same young faces ready to be let out into the world and fulfil their duty. The same parents with chests swollen with pride, and eyes filled with tears. This time, however, Gareth wasn’t one of those youngsters, and this time he wasn’t alone, either. Still dressed in uniform, though.
Together with Wendy he greeted their son at the end of the ceremony, his gaze locked with the younger’s. For a moment he didn’t move, just took the boy in; the pride in his eyes, and the fear to disappoint his parents. The hand at his brow. The uniform sitting perfectly, like a glove, and without any errors.

Then, finally, Gareth’s arm moved up, saluting sharply, and once that was done, he allowed a broad smile to tug on his lips before Michael Arthur finally wrapped his arms around both Wendy and Gareth.

It was as if the radio was unable to find a signal. All Wendy heard was white noise, a humming. She couldn't even feel Gareth squeezing her hand. Or the warmth of him still glued to her side. Wendy was not there, she was just..... existing.
It wasn't intentional, she was just processing. Surely Gareth could see the wheels of her mind stuck, grinding against itself in how to finally let go of all of the questions she had. To finally say goodbye to her brother.
Looking towards G, she gave no recognition of his question or even notice the way his brow had furrowed in guilt. Her eyes just returned down to the last remaining pages trying to will herself to finish reading.
For a long moment after he read how Michael had died in the end, Gareth stayed silent. His mind blank. It wasn’t the end of the file, as there were still pages left; probably more photos, reports, the aftermath. Details about the family. The grip on Wendy’s hand was tight, his gaze stuck on the last word of the page. Michael had sacrificed himself to save his men. And Gareth? He refused to give up information and had been forced to watch his team die. One by one. All the guilt returned now. The hollow feeling, the knowledge he could have done something…
Tumblr media
He swallowed, squeezing Wendy’s hand. She looked just as lost as he felt right now. “Do you—would you like something to drink?” he asked quietly.
