kill my mind - a close reading

welcome to the walls instalment of my lyric analyses! just like with fine line i will be going through all of the tracks on this album and honestly probably gush about louis and how much i love him in every single post <3 fine line had me being a mushy mess and it’ll probably happen all over again : - )

(also i really hope to finish all of this before june ends bc how much of a perfect ending to projectotb would that be and just the best homage to otb and the entire album in general, really.)

WALLS, TRACK 1

You’re a nightmare on the dance floor

first word of the alum: “you” - heavy focus

bestie can’t dance but they sure are going for it

they’re out together, having fun

And you hate me, and I want more

why does “you” hate him? bc he’s making fun of them, perhaps? for the way their body moves, maybe? for looking like one of those blow-up figures in front of car dealerships that flop around in the wind?

he can’t get enough of this nightmare dancer, though - he would very much like to see “more” of them

turned on by the other’s reaction to his teasing: banter as a true love language

You’re a total distraction

While I’m waiting for your reaction (whah)

“you"s entire presence, body and all, takes over his mind

not sure about the “whah”/"why” part - could just be filler, could be him almost going “why am i so weak for this fucker who can’t even dance?”

The devil in my brain, whispering my name

I can hear it saying

And I can ease the pain

Just a little taste babe

And you won’t let go of your hold on me

not sure where what the devil in his brain is saying ends though (the “and” in “and i can ease the pain” in the official lyrics is barely there in louis’s singing): is the voice in his mind also saying “just a little taste”?

“taste” - oral sex (connotation)

“you” and the devil in his brain on the same side? or opposite? - both are possible:

same side: the devil is whispering to him to give in to “you” - parallel with snake in garden of eden: “just a little taste" ⟶ ”you" is the forbidden fruit - tasting it will get you kicked out of eden but it will give you a chance at a real life with eyes wide open (outside the sheltered and seemingly perfect garden) ⟶ “you won’t let go”: the grip “you” has is so strong that louis will do anything they say, sins included (reference to gay being a sin……… which is then nicely echoed in the closing track………..)

opposite sides: devil in his brain is whispering shit to him that makes him doubt himself/dark thoughts in general that take him away from reality ⟶ devil/afterlife, the general appeal of the pain to ease in death vs “back to life" ⟶ "you won’t let go” could mean that “you” won’t let him slip away into the darkness

You kill my mind

Raise my body back to life

horny bastard, on brand ofc

“raise” - alludes to 🍌

“body” is a pars pro toto metaphor for 🍌 (me trying to be as smugly intellectual like my 1st yr eng lit professor explaining horny middle english poetry)

and it also means they make him feel alive like nothing else, which obviously is also an amazing sentiment that isn’t just about sex

And I don’t know what I’d do without you now

common theme in l’s music: i can’t live without you

Kept me living from the last time

From a prison of a past life

“the last time” - last time they had sex, last time they saw each other

/ last time something louis experienced that made him feel dead, that felt like a prison? - continuation of deeper connotations to previous verse: some shit really makes him think he wants to be unalive sometimes but then there’s “you” to hold him back from all of that - “you” has helped him stay alive in the past and continuously does so

“prison of a past life” - reference to l’s situation and lack of freedom ⟶ in the past: things have changed, that part of his life is over, he’s more free now and “you” has been there throughout it all

“you” is a force of life in any case - by physical contact and by being such a focus in louis’s mind that it keeps him going, keeps him alive

On a mission just to feel like

When you kissed me for the last time

“on a mission” - persistent

this person makes him feel so good his only goal is to constantly chase that feeling - no way he’ll ever have anything else as his first priority bc he simply doesn’t feel as alive then

Week two- What does Only the Brave mean to you? (Louis + Orange)

For me it’s kind of hard to explain in words. So, I explained in flowers.

Peony, bashful, happy life. Oak, strength. Pine, humility. White carnation, innocence, pure love. Chamomile, patience in adversity. Fern, sincerity; also, magic and bonds of love.

In other words, to love, whomever it is you love, it takes strength, and courage. It means being human, being patient when it comes to difficulties and bumps in the road. Being sincere when you make mistakes, because you will. It’s accepting yourself. Being yourself.
