That's really disappointing. I had such a hard time with the late reveal last year, but I was hoping it was a temporary thing, especially since I work full-time now… It's super disheartening to see that we're apparently just not going to get adequate time for this event anymore.

Yeah, there's no LAW saying we have to finish it on time, no official event requirements, but there IS pressure! It's a timed event with a lot of other people participating. If you can't get your fic for a certain day out 'on time', it's going to feel like a failure (no matter how many times y'all repeat 'omg no pressure lolzies'), especially when you compare yourself to other participants who are faster writers. This isn't not about readership, either, we wouldn't post things if we didn't want people to see them... and being late on the prompts list has a tangible effect on who's going to pay attention while the event is running.

That's why I liked this event so much originally- the lenient summer prep time meant there was less of that divide between people who write fast and people who don't. It didn't negate those negative social events, you can't completely quash them when running an event like this, but it lessened them quite a bit. It meant that I could participate, and this new crunchtime schedule means I can't. Not to the extent that I want to.

If this was an art event, I'd understand. These events are all derivatives of the original Inktober, which was supposed to be a fun daily journaling-type thing. But this is fiction writing. For 30 short stories, 99 days is not enough. I'm shocked ANYONE is getting through them all on time- and I might be wrong, but isn't having an achievable goal the point of these? :/

Wait, if the prompts are all ready to go, why are you waiting so late to post them again? Didn't the reveal date used to be in may? I'm shocked anyone had time to do them last year, my friend group got wrecked by the short timeframe. Pushing the prompt date back is just going to put that unnecessary pressure on people again, especially as the event grows.

We love how enthusiastic you are for our upcoming event! Unfortunately, a number of factors go into creating and releasing a prompts list. And realistically we aren’t aiming to reveal it until June 15th.

For perspective, in many other events, the average time between the prompt list reveals and the start of the events is about four weeks. When we release our list in mid-June, that leaves ten weeks before the event starts. That’s 99 days, if you decide to write all the way through September 29!

This also seems like a good time to remind everyone that you are not required to write all 30 prompts! And while it is fun to post together in September, the prompts are available without expiration even after the event is closed. We accept promotion submissions through October 7th and the AO3 collection remains open until August the following year. We always encourage you to tag your work with the sicktember tags. Even if you aren't posting in September! There is no pressure to finish the prompts list before September 30th.

For now, you can be on the lookout for a couple polls and set your alarms for the release date! We look forward to seeing everyone’s work!

PSA that has been given 100 times already but needs to be said again:

The reason you, gen Z queers, need to be kink positive isn't because you support those kinks. It is okay to be disgusted by them, actually.

The reason you need to support kinksters is because "these kinks are disgusting" is the framework the alt-right is using and will continue to use to outlaw you. They don't think you're any different from the guys at Pride in leather puppy suits. They think your ENTIRE EXISTENCE is sexual. They think you holding hands with someone of the same gender, or existing as a trans person at all, is the same as a straight couple playing tonsil hockey in public.

YOU ARE A FETISH TO THEM. That is all you will ever be to the alt-right. They will never see you as human. When they talk about "our children being exposed to sexual perversion" they don't mean BDSM like you think they do. They mean YOU.

The only way to preserve your own existence is to fight for the right of kink to exist, because the instant kink becomes taboo or outlawed again*, rest assured, the alt-right will become MUCH more transparent about just what they think about your existence.

When you harp on about disgusting kinks and how they need to be hidden or outlawed and how they're harmful and everyone who does them is (insert thing here), you are giving the alt-right the tools they will use to imprison you as soon as they have unchecked power to do so.

THAT is why kinksters have been part of the queer community, part of Pride, from the start. Because the only way to keep our community safe is by truly ensuring everyone has unlimited sexual autonomy so long as the activity is taking place between consenting adults. It's just like how abortion-related laws are the lynchpin for all manner of medical autonomy laws.

The queer community can't stand without kinksters and vice versa. Even if you yourself aren't a kinkster and find them disgusting, like it or not, that is just how it is.

*Sodomy was illegal in Texas until 2003 and the law is still on the books, just not allowed to be enforced thanks to Lawrence v Texas, which SCOTUS has said they have an interest in striking down
