Eating During Cancer Treatment: Tips to Make Food Tastier
You may find that cancer or cancer treatment has affected your sense of taste. Food may seem to lack flavor or taste too sweet, salty, or metallic.
Usually these changes are temporary and will improve with time. In the meantime, do what you can to maintain your calorie intake and meet your body's protein, vitamin, and mineral needs.
If you normally follow a specific diet, such as one that's low in sodium or fat or designed for people with diabetes, it may be necessary to put those restrictions aside for a while. You'll want to allow for more variety so that you can increase your chances of getting adequate nutrition. Check with your doctor to make sure it's all right to relax your dietary restrictions.
Here are some suggestions for selecting and preparing foods. Experiment with these ideas until you find combinations that appeal to you.
Note: If your mouth or throat is sore, avoid spices, acidic foods, and hot foods or beverages, which may be irritating.
If food lacks flavor
Try different sauces, marinades, seasonings, and other ingredients. These can help perk up the taste of food.
While cooking, add:
Barbecue sauce
Extracts or other flavorings
Ketchup
Meat marinades
Mustards
Soy sauce
Spices and herbs
Teriyaki sauce
Vinegar
Wine
Other suggestions to add flavor include:
Bacon bits
Chopped green or red bell peppers
Chopped onion or garlic
Ham strips
Nuts
Cheese, especially sharp cheese, such as sharp cheddar
Try:
Sugar or syrup on your food. On your cereal, try brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, cinnamon, dates, or raisins instead of white sugar.
Salty foods. In addition, salty foods such as cured meats, cheeses, and snack chips may have more taste.
If food tastes too sweet
Tone down overly sweet foods:
Add a little salt or lemon juice.
Add plain yogurt, buttermilk, instant coffee powder, or extra milk to milkshakes, instant beverage mixes or commercially prepared nutritional drinks.
Try foods that are less sweet:
Drink beverages such as diluted fruit juice, milk, buttermilk, lemonade, ginger ale, or sports drinks.
Choose desserts that aren't as sweet, such as yogurt, custard, pumpkin pie, fruit, baked fruit, fruit with cottage cheese, fruit crumble, plain doughnuts, or graham crackers.
In place of sweet snacks, choose other foods, such as:
Cheese
Chips or pretzels with dip
Cottage cheese
Crackers and cheese
Deviled eggs
Nuts
Peanut butter
If syrup, jam or sugar tastes too sweet, try butter or margarine on cooked cereal, toast, and pancakes.
If food tastes too salty
A little sugar may tone down the saltiness of some foods. Cook foods without adding salt or seasonings containing salt. Avoid processed foods that contain a lot of sodium. Look for products labeled reduced sodium or low sodium. Try bland, mild-flavored foods.
If meat doesn't taste right
If the meat is fresh and cooked properly, but it just doesn't taste right, serve other foods that contain protein, such as:
Beans or peas in soups, salads or side dishes or as a dip or spread
Cheese
Cottage cheese
Custard
Egg dishes
Eggnog
Fish—fresh, frozen or packed in a vacuum-sealed pouch, as canned fish can have a metallic taste
Instant breakfast-type drinks or other nutritional beverages
Lentils
Macaroni and cheese
Malts
Milkshakes
Nuts
Peanut butter
Poultry
Pudding
Quinoa
Tofu or tempeh
Yogurt
Other suggestions for meat:
Try meat prepared in combination with other foods, such as chili, lasagna, spaghetti sauce, casseroles, stews, or hearty soups.
Try sauces, ketchup, and other seasonings, which may improve the flavor.
Try marinating meat, chicken, or fish in marinades, soy sauce, sweet fruit juices, wine, or Italian-style dressings.
Try salty, spicy or smoked meats, such as seasoned beef steaks, pork loins, ham, sausage, or cold cuts.
Try high-protein foods that may taste better cold or at room temperature. Examples include cheese or cottage cheese plates; macaroni salads with shrimp, ham, or cheese; tuna, egg, ham, or chicken salad; cold meat or luncheon meat sandwiches; or cold salmon.
If your cancer treatment has weakened your immune system, some of these foods may not be safe for you. Practice food safety by keeping foods at safe temperatures. Don't let perishable foods sit out for more than an hour. Avoid unpasteurized juice, cheese, or milk, and raw or undercooked meats.
General suggestions
Foods that look appealing often taste better.
Select foods with a variety of colors, temperatures, and textures.
Drink liquids often or use gum, mints, or hard candies to remove a bad taste in your mouth.
Try using plastic utensils if you have a bitter or metallic taste in your mouth when eating.
Check with your dentist to see if you have any dental problems. Maintain good oral hygiene.
Check with your doctor to see if your taste changes could be related to your medications. In some cases, your doctor may adjust your medications to reduce or eliminate side effects. Don't stop taking your medications unless your doctor tells you to.
Check with a health care professional about mouth rinses.
If these measures don't help or if you're losing weight, ask your doctor or a registered dietitian for further advice.

A Guide to Genetic-Testing Kits
Speculative but Promising
Toggle description
There’s momentum behind this concept, though it needs more research to elucidate exactly what’s at work.
Curious about genetic testing, we explored the options: kits that could reveal something about the health of your microbiome, which foods you’re sensitive to, how your body metabolizes certain nutrients. Tests that recommend certain strains of cannabis and beauty routines based on your DNA. And even a test that identifies dogs by their shit. But first, a little bit of background on genetic testing; if you already know this world well, you can skip down for our highlights.
It started in 2000 with a novel way to learn about your ancestry. A simple blood test allowed companies like Family Tree to send DNA data directly to consumers, tracing their lineage back to great-great-grandparents. In 2007, 23andMe revolutionized direct-to-consumer testing with the saliva test, which made it simpler (you spit and send in your sample). And 23andMe created autosomal testing that could be used by both men and women to determine their ancestral lines up to five generations back and break down their ethnic makeup by percentage points. This opened the door for the technology most DNA-testing companies use today.
Soon, a lot of genetic-testing websites cropped up with their own spin on your DNA’s story. It’s estimated that genealogical-testing companies have around 26 million DNA profiles. And because of companies like GEDmatch, which have aggregated test results from multiple websites, it’s possible that most people’s DNA can be identified—even if they’ve never done one of these tests themselves or uploaded their own DNA. Forensic scientists have partnered with some of these sites to solve crimes (the Golden State Killer was identified from his distant relatives’ DNA).
Genetic testing and these companies raise serious ethical and privacy concerns. Given this, why might a person choose to submit their DNA? Besides learning you’re not as Irish as you thought, is there a reason for the average individual to be interested in personalized genetic testing?
New research has focused on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and what they can tell us about our health. SNPs are the most common type of genetic variation among humans and occur normally throughout our DNA. Each person has between 4 and 5 million unique SNPs in their genome. These SNPs act as biological markers and determine various aspects of our health.
In the 1990s, an SNP that prevents normal blood clotting was identified in the gene called Factor V. Scientists found that patients with deep vein thrombosis often had this particular SNP. Since this breakthrough, the medical community has been able to use genetic testing to identify risk for over 2,000 diseases by determining whether people are carriers of certain genes. Newborns are screened to help with early diagnosis. And we’ve learned more about how drugs are processed based on a person’s genome through pharmacogenetic testing.
Because genetic tests can outline your SNPs, the real promise of the test results is that they could empower people to optimize their lifestyle based on their individual genome. This is the field of nutrigenomics: It tries to tell you how your genome interacts with nutrients on a molecular level—and how different foods will affect you.
For example, if you have a certain SNP, you may be someone who can’t convert beta-carotene into vitamin A efficiently. So a nutrition-testing kit might suggest that you supplement or eat more vitamin-A-rich foods, like sweet potatoes. And a recent systematic review found that genetic-testing kits that provided lifestyle recommendations led to positive lifestyle changes, especially related to nutrition.
Do these kits tell you the whole story of your health? Well…they can give you insight into how certain genes are related to nutritional outcomes (like how well your body converts an antioxidant you eat into a vitamin you need). But only blood work can detect whether you’re deficient in a nutrient. And the story of one SNP is not the story of how your entire genome interacts with nutrients. When it comes to determining which diet is best for you, genetic tests aren’t totally there yet. But what they can do is help create and reinforce healthy lifestyle choices.
And in the future, maybe they’ll help with much more. Nutrigenomics established itself as a field in the past decade, and other industries, like cannabis and beauty, are following it into the DNA-testing space. Which means we could see some really interesting research in the next five, ten, twenty years.
But back to right now. If you’re ready for testing: See our guide below to get a sense of what’s out there. When selecting a kit, you want to thoroughly vet the company for its scientific accuracy and how it will use your data, to be sure that you’re cool with it on both counts. The most rigorously researched companies will provide the actual studies to back up the recommendations they give you. Be aware that the information a company retrieves based on your DNA may not belong to you and may be sold to other companies; read through the privacy policy to make sure your information is safe to your satisfaction. Also, note that not all of these tests are covered by insurance yet. Many are likely to be covered down the road as the cost of testing begins to decrease and personalized direct-to-consumer medicine becomes more mainstream.
Medical-Testing Kits
Tumblr media
23andMe
The OG genealogy company that paved the way for today’s autosomal testing and saliva swabs is also the only ancestry company that offers health data; the FDA just cleared 23andMe to test for two breast cancer genes and give information on prostate cancer risk.
Tumblr media
EverlyWell
With the Food Sensitivity test kit from EverlyWell, you can screen your body’s reactivity to ninety-six common foods with a simple finger prick. This can help you identify the foods your body has an elevated immune response to. And if you believe you have food-related symptoms (gastrointestinal pain, headaches, fatigue), you can use this information to start eliminating potential offenders from your diet. Keep in mind, this kit does not test for food allergies and can’t help diagnose celiac disease.
Tumblr media
Pathway Genomics
To reduce the trial and error that can often come with prescription medications, Pathway Genomics has developed two testing kits to analyze genetic variants that affect the way you metabolize drugs, which impacts their efficacy and potential side effects. The Mental Health DNA Insight kit analyzes your body’s response to fifty common psychiatric medications, and the Pain Medication DNA Insight kit tests your response to thirteen pain medications.
Microbiome-Testing Kits
Tumblr media
BIOHM
If you’re looking for a straightforward report card on your gut, it’s BIOHM’s Gut Test. Based on years of research by microbiome expert Mahmoud Ghannoum, PhD, BIOHM scores the diversity of your microbiome on a scale of one to ten. And then it compares your bacteria and fungi—which are commonly overlooked—to estimated healthy levels. It gives an analysis of each strain of bacteria and fungi and provides nutritional recommendations to help optimize your gut. And it also sells a collection of well-researched prebiotic and probiotic formulas.
Tumblr media
DayTwo
By combining clinical parameters with microbiome data, DayTwo uses an analytical model to predict the glycemic response to various foods for people with diabetes. This is based on how the foods are digested and absorbed. The results help people create a personalized meal plan to keep glucose levels in check. And through its mobile app, DayTwo recommends meals and snacks, gives nutritional information, and calculates a health score for each meal the user logs.
Tumblr media
Thryve
If you’ve tipped over from gut-curious to gut aficionado: Thryve’s Gut Health kit gives you a panel of your microbiome and sends you back a rating of your overall gut health with a detailed report on each microbe it has detected. It recommends foods for you based on your dominant bacteria and tells you how your microbiome relates to your health in terms of mood, digestion, skin, energy levels, and so on.
Nutrition-Testing Kits
Tumblr media
Nutrigenomix
Aptly named after the field of nutrigenomics, Nutrigenomix applied cutting-edge research on various SNPs related to nutrition and exercise to lay the groundwork for most companies in the space today. You won’t find an integrative app or a cute map of your recommended foods here. Instead, Nutrigenomix’s science-forward Nutrition and Fitness Test gives you a wide array of information related to forty-five genetic markers that affect your nutrient metabolism, cardiometabolic health, weight, lactose and gluten tolerance, eating habits, and fitness (e.g., motivation to exercise or injury vulnerability). It provides tailored recommendations with the research to back them up, whether that’s suggesting you eat more citrus fruits or suggesting you limit your iron intake to reduce your risk of liver disease, arthritis, or heart conditions.
Tumblr media
Habit
It’s the love child of genetic testing and meal-delivery services: Habit uses blood and saliva samples to determine your response to different foods, then compiles your optimal nutrient intake and recommended foods. You also get a thirty-minute session with a nutritionist through the app, followed by an option to get tailored meal plans (for an additional cost).
Tumblr media
GenoPalate
Using data from seventy-five different SNPs, GenoPalate creates a profile of how your body metabolizes different nutrients and offers suggestions to optimize your intake of carbs, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. It then recommends the top fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats, proteins, grains, dairy products, nuts, and oils for you. Bonus: It can run analyses on existing data that you’ve sent to 23andMe or AncestryDNA.
Niche Testing Kits
Tumblr media
CannabisDNA
Anxiety from one puff too many is a learning curve most of us could do without. By analyzing seventy of your genetic markers, CannabisDNA recommends the THC:CBD ratio and strains it thinks are right for you based on cannabinoid metabolism. It also makes suggestions for strains based on what behaviors you’re trying to avoid or attain—like if you want some extra help falling asleep or if your munchies are out of control.
Tumblr media
Orig3n
Could your genome help you hack your beauty routine? The Beauty DNA Test from Orig3n tests for parameters related to your skin’s appearance and health, signs of aging, skin elasticity, and response to sunlight to give you an actionable beauty report. For example, you might want to start taking that collagen supplement earlier than you thought.
Tumblr media
PooPrints
If you’re the leave-it-and-run type of dog owner, you might want to reconsider. For apartment buildings that use PooPrints, during an initial “doggy day,” DNA samples are collected from each dog in the complex. Then, when the building finds any rogue droppings on the property, they’ll send it off to PooPrints to determine whose pup it belongs to. And a (large) fine can follow. While this might not be a genetic test to improve your well-being, some may consider it a form of self-improvement (and here’s to a future where you can find out who took a bite out of your sandwich in the work fridge).

Say goodbye to your favorite Neutrogena Light Therapy Mask selfies, because the brand just recalled the popular device due to eye-related problems. On July 5, Neutrogena released a statement saying that, “The Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask is safe for use by the general population when used once per day as directed. Reports of visual effects associated with the use of the Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask are rare, generally mild and transient.” But cautioned: “For a small subset of the population with certain underlying eye conditions, as well as for users taking medications which could enhance ocular photosensitivity, there is a theoretical risk of eye injury.”
On July 17, the recall was brought to the public’s attention with a statement about the recall from the Australian Department of Health, identifying that the risk for eye injury was for a small group of people. The statement read, “It has been identified that, for a small subset of potentially susceptible people (including people with certain eye-related disorders e.g. retinitis pigmentosa, ocular albinism, other congenital retinal disorders), repeated exposure may cause varying degrees of retinal damage that could be irreversible and could accelerate peripheral vision impairment or loss.” They continued: “Other potential adverse events that may be associated with use of this device are eye pain, eye discomfort, eye irritation, tearing, blinding, blurring of vision, seeing spots/flashes and other changes in vision (for example vision colour).”
While the Australian Department of Health advises to stop using the mask, a spokesperson for the U.S. Food & Drug Administration told *The New York Times* that they’re “aware of the recall” and looking into it. *Teen Vogue* has also reached out to Neutrogena and the FDA for comment.
As of now, those who have purchased the light therapy masks can call Neutrogena’s consumer care line for a refund. And, if there is any “eye irritation or visual discomfort,” the brand advises to stop using and call a doctor.
LED light therapy has been used by dermatologists for years, but has recently become fairly popular for at-home acne treatment, as the light therapy technology can help with the redness and inflammation that often comes along with acne. It also obviously makes for a good IG selfie. But, your vision is worth way more than a few likes and comments, so again definitely consult your doctor. For now, Neutrogena has pulled the mask off the market from wholesalers and retail stores.
For active users of the mask, don’t be bummed out, because although at $40 this was one of the most affordable light therapy masks, there are a lot of other acne preventative and treating devices and products. For some replacement options, we got you — here are the best products for all acne from pimples to hyperpigmentation, tested by our staffers and friends.

Bella Thorne Responds to Nude Photo Hack: "I Took My Power Back"
Bella Thorne is taking a stand — and reclaiming her power — against a hacker who allegedly stole nude photos from her.
On Saturday, June 15, the actor posted a lengthy note to Twitter, telling fans that private photos were stolen from her phone the day before. “For the last 24 hours, I have been threatened with my own nudes,” Bella wrote. “I feel gross, I feel watched, I feel someone has taken something from me that I only wanted one special person to see.”
Her post went on to describe that the hacker has allegedly sent her “multiple nude photos other celebs” in addition to her own. Bella’s screenshots seem to show the hacker texting her several times, sending her messages such as “YO BELLA” and “Got all the videos” along with photos of the actor.
Bella added the hacked photos to her Twitter post on Saturday, noting that she is sharing them with the world in order to reclaim her power. “For too long I let a man take advantage of me over and over and I’m f*cking sick of it,” she wrote, adding: “NOW U DON’T GET TO TAKE ANOTHER THING FROM ME. I can sleep tonight better knowing I took my power back. U can’t control my life, u never will.”
A quick scroll through Bella’s mentions will show that many of her fans were quick to offer their support and sympathy to what she has been experiencing. “Yes girl speak loud for the people in the back 💪🏻 we love one strong queen i stan stan 💖,” wrote one person, while another tweeted: “I’m extremely sorry for what you’ve been through. You’re a strong woman and we live in a shitty world. Don’t let anyone get you down, you’re POWERFUL ❤️.”
While it was Bella’s choice to reclaim ownership over her body in this manner, it’s important to remember that no one’s private photos should ever be compromised or viewed without their permission, regardless of celebrity status. And, in case it wasn’t clear, this is not Bella’s fault for taking the photos (it’s nobody’s business but hers if she wants to share intimate photos with a partner) — it’s the fault of the alleged hacker who took away her bodily autonomy. As revenge porn lawyer Carrie Goldberg put it in a 2016 interview with The New Yorker: “It's the distribution you have to focus on.”
As with other celebrity photo leaks (of which there have been many), it's important not to view any nude photos that have been posted online without the person’s consent. In 2014, Jennifer Lawrence spoke out after having her photos hacked and leaked, telling Vanity Fair: “Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this. It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting.”

Justin Bieber Got a Tattoo on His Face for New Wife Hailey Baldwin
Getty ImagesBG005/Bauer-Griffin
Justin Bieber is a complex guy; one minute he's eating his burrito sideways, the next it's for a prank. He has long hair, and then all of sudden it's shaved. He's having fun at an amusement park, but then he's seen weeping at a Harry Potter-themed bar. And if you're thinking 'Wowza, what's he going to do next?', don't worry, because I have an answer for you. And that answer would be that the next big thing that Justin is doing is...drum roll...getting a face tattoo.
Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
Justin, who is already very inked up, got a tattoo with his new wife Hailey Baldwin. Tattoo artist Bang Bang, aka Keith McCurdy, did the tats, and yesterday he told Page Six, “They each got a tattoo. Justin’s tattoo is on his face, and I haven’t seen any photos of it, so he’s doing a good job of laying low.”
Bang Bang also revealed a little bit about the tattoo saying “It’s really thin and delicate. And [it’s] also not a traditional couples’ tattoo." He added that the tattoo was next to Justin's eyebrow and consists of little words.
Bang Bang didn't share when the couple got these tattoos though, and some people suspect that it might be this mark above Justin's brow that was seen in July:

Here's a closer look (and yes, it's very hard to make out):
That said, Justin has been wearing a lot of hats lately (see below), so it's possible that he'll walk outside without a hat one day and will have "I love Hailey" tattooed across his hairline.
JB on a call.

So until that day comes, mazel to the couple on their new tattoos.

Two Men Were Arrested in Connection With 7-Year-Old Jazmine Barnes's Killing
Two men have now been arrested in connection with the December 30 shooting death of 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes, after the car she was riding in with her mother and three sisters was fired upon, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and ABC 13 in Houston. And credit is being given to social justice activist and writer Shaun King, CNN reported.
The first suspect was arrested following a tip from King, according to CNN. According to CBS News, Eric Black Jr., 20, was allegedly driving the vehicle reportedly used in the shooting and then later allegedly returned the car and got a new rental, which he was reportedly driving when he was arrested. Police pulled him over for allegedly not using his turn signal, the Houston Chronicle reported, after which he allegedly admitted to being involved in the shooting and told police that the family was not the intended target.
According to ABC 13, the second suspect, 24-year-old Larry Woodruffe, "appeared in court over the weekend on an unrelated drug possession charge, where a judge said he is also a suspect in the capital murder investigation." ABC 13 reported that sources said Woodruffe is believed to be the alleged shooter.
“Now my baby has gotten justice,” Christopher Cevilla, Jazmine’s father, said outside the Harris County Jail after the first arrest was made, according to the Chronicle. “Now we can properly put her to rest without having to put her to rest [while] we’re still on a manhunt looking for a suspect." In an interview with ABC 13, Jazmine’s mom expressed a similar sense of relief that the burial could now take place.
Black alleged that he and the suspected shooter were driving when they saw a car they thought they knew and opened fire. During court just before 5 a.m. on Sunday, January 6, it was revealed that the suspect learned they had allegedly fired into the wrong car after watching the news, according to ABC 13. Black told investigators that the pistol allegedly used during the shooting was at his house, and gave consent for investigators to search his residence. He is being held without bail, ABC 11 reported.
“I am grateful to our dedicated investigators, the partner law enforcement agencies that provided vital assistance, and tipsters from across the nation who pulled together to support our work to get justice for Jazmine,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a press release. “Our work is not finished, but I believe the people of Harris County can take comfort in knowing we have made great progress.”
Gonzalez told reporters that two days after the shooting, King offered $25,000 to any of his Twitter followers who had information on the incident. The reward eventually climbed to $100,000, and while King said most of the hundreds of tips weren’t helpful, he'd had enough promising leads that it eventually led police to their arrest.
Gonzalez told CNN on Sunday that one of King's tips "provided a much different angle to what we were initially looking at.” Police had been looking for a white man in his 30s or 40s driving a red pickup truck, but Black is a 20-year-old African-American man. The white man in the truck was potentially just another witness, the sheriff told reporters, according to CNN.
“I want to thank again Shaun King for his activism and help and raising awareness and the monies that were put forward to be able to generate those calls,” Gonzalez said, according to CNN.

THIS Is What Happens When Your Beau And AI Join Forces To Pick Your Engagement Ring
You don’t have to twist my arm to look at engagement rings, but I’ll be honest with you, it is like a full on scavenger hunt out there to find the perfect one. Amidst all the cuts + carats and stunners filling your Instagram and Pinterest feeds every day, it’s all. so. good. Which is why it’s not uncommon to start feeling overwhelmed early on in the engagement ring search. So brace yourself, because this next sentence might just change your life. Or at least save you endless hours of stress, confusion and trips to multiple jewelers. Digital diamond expert extraordinaire, ROSI, is the future of engagement ring shopping. The first of its kind in our big blue world, and soon-to-be the first in your heart, this is the kind of magic that happens when AI joins your SO to pick your engagement ring.
Let me elaborate. ROSI is essentially a personal shopper with an IQ of 8000 and a masters in gemology. Using a pretty clever algorithm and AI technology that’s out of this world, ROSI scales down the 60,000 diamond inventory at your disposal to show you those specific GIA-certified diamonds that are the best match for YOU based on the information + preferences you provide. Hello, new best friend!
ROSI is the brainchild of RockHer, an online jewelry retailer with a penchant for artisan engagement rings that are celebrated by couples all over the world. They’re bringing a whole new meaning to the word clarity (see what we did there), which becomes evident when you try ROSI out for yourself.
The steps are easy as 1-2-3:
1. Pick a shape 2. Enter your budget 3. Filter by your preferences
We wouldn’t hesitate to spend a whole day lost in the wonderful world of RockHer engagement rings… after all, every single one they create is bespoke. Style, size and overall fit are made to order with 3D previews of the diamond that let you inspect every little facet of the ring before making the final commitment. Limitations? What does that word even mean?!
Even through a virtual shopping experience, you can rest assured that you’ll be able to choose your unique engagement ring wisely, efficiently and frugally. Furthermore, if comparisitis is one of your things, and hey, we’ve all been there, you can use their Compare Your Diamond tool to glimpse how any other diamond measures up against their inventory.
For the perpetually indecisive, choosing the diamond shape + style combo that’s practically perfect in every way might just stump you. At least one constant remains true – with the thousands of styles available at RockHer, you’re bound to find the one. A few of our favorites include…
Three Stone Engagement Rings
An elegant symbol of past, present and future (and in many cases, friendship, love and fidelity), this classic engagement ring shape always draws our eyes. Though it’s been around for quite some time, gracing the ring fingers of beloved figures like Kristen Bell, Katie Lee and most recently Meghan Markle, modern romantics are looking to this style once again. The beauty is, you can choose a trilogy of the same stones or mix the shapes entirely. And RockHer’s unique three stone engagement rings are the beginning of everything.
Oval Engagement Rings
All hail the striking oval diamond, whether encircled with smaller gems or making a statement in its own right. Oval engagement rings have been growing in popularity these past few years, and it’s easy to see why the “elongated round” has been sweeping the world like wildfire. RockHer boasts an extensive collection of this ring style – the magnificent Dylan amongst them.
Pear Shaped Engagement Rings
Another style that’s majorly on our radar is the pear shape. With a teardrop silhouette, we’re fascinated by the way this contemporary ring style carries light and full-fledged glamour. Distinctive, yet delicate, pear shaped engagement rings are an excellent choice for those who seek a variation of the traditional brilliant cut that’ll have everyone talking.
We’ll be honest, these bespoke engagement rings have us floored. Not only because there are diamond styles to choose from for DAYS, but also because RockHer offers so much guidance along the way to connect you to that perfect piece. The forward-thinking ROSI Personal Ring Shopper seamlessly selects options based on your preferences in order to give you the all the benefits of an over-the-counter shopping experience from the comfort of your living room.

Mediterranean Zucchini Pasta Salad
This refreshing and lightened up Mediterranean Zucchini Pasta Salad is prepared with zucchini noodles in lieu of traditional pasta, and tossed with briny feta, chickpeas, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, spinach, and olives.
Zucchini Pasta Salad
Hello there! It has been a long (translation: longer than intended) break since my last post. There were several recipes that were all ready to go and be shared with you, but life got in the way a bit. Travel, internet issues (remind me to never plan to post while traveling!), a move, freelance photography shoots, and a lot of packing/unpacking. The good news?
Connor and I are completely settled in our new apartment and loving it. I feel settled, yet anxious to get back into this space and share more with you.
We’re starting with this light, yet hearty Zucchini Pasta Salad. I had originally planned on sharing this recipe a couple weeks ago, but I’m happy I waited. Summer produce is just beginning to pop up at my local farmer’s market, which means most of the produce in this salad (summer squash, tomatoes, fresh greens!) will peak very soon.
While you can certainly make this pasta salad all year long, it is best reserved for the summer season and an ideal dish for summer potlucks or BBQs. I always gravitate towards lighter, vegetable-centric meals this time of year, and this salad ticks all of those boxes and then some.
As the name suggests, we’ll be using spiralized zucchini (aka. zucchini noodles!) in lieu of traditional pasta for this recipe.
The salad is given a Mediterranean flair with the addition of fresh spinach, briny kalamata olives, feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, artichoke hearts, red onion, and canned chickpeas. All of the ingredients are tossed with a simple vinaigrette and allowed to marinate in the fridge.
The final dish is simple, yet flavorful, filling, and nutritious! It can serve as a meal unto itself or be served alongside a more traditional protein, such as grilled shrimp, chicken, or flank steak.
The recipe comes from my friend Ali’s (of the blog Inspiralized) newest cookbook, Inspiralized & Beyond (affiliate link). Ali is well known for her spiralized recipes – if you’re looking for ways to incorporate more vegetables into your diet using a spiralizer, she’s your girl.
Her latest cookbook shares even more methods for preparing and cooking vegetables. While I chose to share a more traditional spiralized recipe, the book also covers ways to chop, rice, and mash vegetables to create creative, craveable meals.
I’m particularly excited to make her zucchini pork dumplings (zucchini strips are used as the traditional wrapping!), hasselback zucchini, spanakopita bake (with a potato crust!), and chickpea “tuna” salad, just to name a few.
Happy summer!

Mediterranean Zucchini Pasta Salad
Yield: 6 Servings
Prep Time: 25 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
This refreshing and lightened up Mediterranean Zucchini Pasta Salad is prepared with zucchini noodles in lieu of traditional pasta, and tossed with briny feta, chickpeas, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, spinach, and olives. This salad is best after sitting for a bit (it can be prepared several hours in advance or overnight) when the zucchini has softened a bit and had a chance to absorb the flavors of the dressing. Serve as a meal or alongside a more traditional protein (grilled shrimp, chicken, or flank steak would be great!).
Ingredients:
For the Dressing:
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
kosher salt
freshly ground black pepper
For the Salad:
2 medium zucchini
1 small red onion
1 (14-ounce) can quartered artichoke hearts, drained
1/2 cup halved pitted kalamata olives
1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese (optional; omit to make dairy free)
2 cups baby spinach
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
Directions:
Make the Dressing: In a medium bowl, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, oregano, parsley (if using), garlic powder, and mustard. Taste and season with salt and pepper.
Make the Salad: Slice the zucchini halfway through lengthwise, being careful not to pierce through the center (*Laura’s note: you want to create a part slice in order to create spiral cuts, otherwise the spiralizer will not work properly). Spiralize the zucchini with Blade C (*these instructions are designed for the Inspiralizer, but feel free to improvise and use whatever type that you own) and put them in a large bowl. Slice the onion halfway through lengthwise, being careful not to pierce through the center. Spiralize the onion with Blade A and add half the onion noodles to the bowl. (Save the rest for another use.) Add the artichokes, olives, chickpeas, feta (if using), spinach, and tomatoes to the bowl.
Pour the dressing over the salad and toss well to combine. Serve or refrigerate until ready to serve.
Printed with permission from Inspiralized and Beyond by Ali Maffuci (Clarkson Potter, Spring 2018).

Tips For Success:
Per Ali’s instructions, this salad is best after sitting for a bit (for several hours or overnight) when the zucchini has softened and absorbed all the flavors of the dressing.
While this salad can serve as a meal unto itself, it would also be delicious served alongside a more traditional protein (grilled shrimp, chicken, or flank steak would be great!).

Thrift Store Hacks – 7 Tips For Low Budget Shopping
The thrift store.
Where you do a different kind of shopping. Have you watched Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” music video?
He thinks it’s “f—ing awesome” going to these places.
Is he right though? Can you really find clothes there that rival the stuff found in your local mall?
Click Here To Watch The Video – 7 Thrift Store Hacks – Tips For Low Budget Shopping
At first, a thrift store can feel like a jungle inside.
You need enough patience, preparation, and all the right hacks to avoid getting lost or overwhelmed by the whole thing…
This article breaks down 7 awesome hacks for those who want to go thrift shopping.
Thrift Store Hack #1 – Shop On The Right Days
Timing is everything, guys. While people would usually do their shopping in malls or department stores on Saturdays and Sunday– the days they’re expected to have time off – thrift stores have their hands quite full during the weekend.
What happens on weekends? That’s when stores receive donations from generous folks who, unsurprisingly, are using the weekend to run errands. With all this new stuff coming in, it typically takes the stores 1-2 days to process the items and have them ready for sale.
That means the latest goodies are most likely to hit the shelves of thrift stores on Mondays and Tuesdays. But that’s not all you need to remember. Many stores also take advantage of holidays when everybody is out – offering as much as  50% off their items. If you live in the US, you’ll want to mark your calendar for thrift shopping on the 4th of July, Memorial Day, Presidents Day, Veterans Day, and Labor Day.
Set your alarm an hour earlier and get to the Thrift Store before work.
Thrift Store Hack #2 – Go Early
This goes hand in hand with the first tip. If you can squeeze in some time to thrift shop before heading to work (or arrange to take the whole morning off), perfect. You’ll be able to look around during the non-peak hours.
The best part about this is you can take your time browsing all sections of the store, unlike later in the day when most items get claimed and sold in a flash. And to help speed things up more, start by checking the carts and bins marked “just donated” in the stores.
Know what you want before you go shopping.
Thrift Store Hack #3 – Know Exactly What You Want
If you just walk into thrift stores without a goal or plan, you’ll end up wasting time unnecessarily. And really – it’s also true for shopping in malls or department stores. Here’s a two-step protocol worth following every time you’re going to shop:
Identify the clothing item/s you hope to buy at the thrift store.
Dress in a way that matches the item/s you’re shopping for.
The idea here is when you try on a certain item, you’ll discover on the spot whether or not it works with your matching outfit, and whether or not you see yourself wearing it often. So let me now give you some examples of potential things to find at thrift stores:
Men’s sunglasses or shades: It’s best to find a durable pair with heavy-duty hinges and thick lenses since the other types of secondhand sunglasses wouldn’t last as long.
Men’s sweaters and jackets: Try finding a jacket or sweater with a wool blend as well as a lining that’s clean and consistent. Those ones are of the best quality.
Men’s dress shoes: Are you keen on high-end shoes made of 100% leather? Thrift stores tend to have their pure leather shoes marked on the sole with the words “Vero Cuoio.” Meanwhile, lower-end shoes that have rubber soles will be marked on the sole as “leather upper.”
By the way, take note that just like at your normal retail stores, you’re more likely to get the BEST deals on clothing items when they’re out of season. That means you should look ahead and try finding sweaters or jackets during the summer, and shorts or t-shirts when it’s winter.
Thrift Store Hack #4 – Know Your Thrift Stores
Thrift stores are run by charities but they are also run as businesses. You will find that thrift stores located in more affluent areas may charge significantly more than those located in poorer parts of town. This is because they know their visitors are willing to spend more and have more disposable income.
It pays to look around. Go out of your way to find these stores. Take a different route home from work or check out thrift stores in towns you’re visiting for work or a vacation. You’ll find that prices differ greatly and you may find an even bigger bargain!
Hack #5 – Find Out When The Store Changes Colored Tags
Besides going early in the morning at the start of the week, this is another key piece of information that you should adjust your visiting days based on. Why? Because a lot of stores use colored tags to indicate items that are 50% off every week.
By knowing the exact day your thrift store changes to a certain colored tag, you can drop by on that day with the hope of finding good choices of items under that category. So ask an employee for that info or a list of days/weeks assigned to each colored tag. That list also might be located near the checkout register.
Give back to the community too. Your unwanted clothes may suit someone perfectly.
Thrift Store Hack #6 – Donate When You Shop
A little generosity goes a long way here. Are you aware that many Goodwill thrift stores actually offer a coupon for 20-25% off when you bring in clothes to donate? That’s a nice added incentive to do some good.
Make it a strategy to keep your old clothing in a bag and leave it in the back of your car. That way, you’ll always have something to donate whenever you drive to a thrift store. Whoever unloads or collects your donation would also be the one to hand you a coupon.
Thrift Store Hack #7 – Be Loyal
Finally, don’t forget that the most loyal patrons of any store are also rewarded the most. You can follow these steps and practice to becoming a loyal customer yourself:
Talk with the employees and befriend them from day 1. If you form a great bond with the cashier and even the manager, they may gladly set aside pieces that you might be interested in trying during your next visit.
Follow thrift stores in your area on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. This allows you to get the heads up on the latest deals or promos all the time. Also, download the Goodwill app if there’s a Goodwill store near you.
Sign up for free rewards and programs. Many thrift stores offer free “loyalty” cards or punch card-type programs in which you’re eligible for discounts after a certain number of purchases. Other stores even give you exclusive access to the most valuable sales/specials.
Those are my seven hacks. Don’t underestimate the advantages that’ll come with using them. And for those planning to hit the thrift stores soon, I want to wish you guys an enjoyable shopping experience. Don’t be turned off by cheapness. It’s the quality, the fit, and the stylishness that really matter in the end!

Four Years in our Home – Favorite Projects, Regrets and What’s Next?
Four years in our home. I can’t believe it either! I am feeling really nostalgic and wanted to share a walk down memory lane today. I’m here to share favorite projects, regrets and what’s next.
Some of the happiest moments of my life have happened while living in this home. Bringing Nova home is an obvious favorite … she’s our pride and joy. The launch of our app, A Color Story, happened while we were living here. I’m also incredibly proud of us for making it through our first major renovation and staying focused until we ended up with a home we love. And I have no doubt we will make so many more incredible memories, including bringing home our second daughter!
So, about that walk down memory lane …
Favorite projects  –Our exterior updates (I told Jeremy there was no way we were looking at this home unless we could paint the exterior white. It makes my eyes so happy every single day—best $ we spent on this house, hands down!) –The projector (yes yes yes) –DIY fiber art (I’ve seen so many of you make this and it makes me so happyyyyyy!) –A-Frame Playhouse and Play Set –Our DIY campaign dresser  –Gold cactus wallpaper –My closet makeover (this one is small but it makes me happy every SINGLE day)
And a few favorite room tours:  –Our den tour -Our master bedroom and bathroom -My first big holiday home tours here and here, and don’t forget Halloween (these are some of my favorite blog posts and memories) –Marigold’s nursery tour
Regrets  Hmmm … I have thought about this a lot. I’m overall really happy with how the home came out, but in hindsight I rushed too much. It was my first big renovation and I had unrealistic expectations for how quickly we could renovate a home this size. I wish I would have focused on just one room at a time instead of trying to renovate and design so many at once.
The biggest lessons I learned from this renovation were to not rush so much and to enjoy the planning phase. Now that I’m done with all the renovation I miss it and wish I had spaced it out more.
I also regret not putting in a deck. Now that we’ve been here four years and we’re talking about moving, my husband doesn’t want to do it anymore, which I understand since it’s a huge project. I wish I would have prioritized it higher up on the list. But at the end of the day, it’s not that big of a deal. I’ll think of that deck as my “the one that got away”—haha.
What’s next? While we no longer have any large projects on our list, there are still so many other projects I want to do. It feels like a fun change of pace to have this season for smaller projects. We also have some bnb properties we are renovating, and those keep me super busy. If we have any big gaps between those projects, I’d really like to mix it up and learn to make pasta or learn to sew—two things I’ve been wanting to do for years.
We’re currently not sure whether moving is in our near future or not. It’s something we’re giving a lot of thought to and are still on the fence about. As I mentioned in this post, I am currently inspired by some very different styles of homes, so narrowing down the style of my “dream home” feels like a lot of pressure. But we are getting to the phase in life where we’d be doing a “forever home” (or if not forever, a home where we live while our kids are going through school).
Lately, I’ve been enjoying the dreaming phase. I’ve been spending my nights glued to Pinterest and researching different areas and neighborhoods. It’s fun to have so many exciting possibilities on the horizon.
Happy four years, cute little kitchen! We love you.
I feel so lucky that we stumbled on this home when we did. It was the greatest project for me. I feel like I grew 10x in my design skills and my knowledge of remodeling since we moved here. Very thankful for the chance to turn this ’70s ranch into our dream home!
xx! Elsie
