'as mãos da revolução', 2024 or, 'the hands of the revolution' we're celebrating 50 years of the carnation revolution today in portugal - 50 years since the dictatorship fell, 50 years of being able to express yourself without fear of beatings, incarceration or worse.

it is a date that sits very close to my heart despite being a post-revolution baby. i have enjoyed over 30 years of freedom and i try to not take it for granted.

what is poetry?

you know how, when you’re a young kid, your parents take you to visit a lake, and you’re doing all that fun young kid stuff like cannonballs off the dock, digging your toes into the mud, pretending to be a mermaid or a manatee or submarine captain? when suddenly the clouds that had covered the sun move aside, and the surface of the lake is touched everywhere with bright gold flecks of light, and you stop what you’re doing to stare in awe at something you’d never realized before was so heart-wrenchingly beautiful? and the moment is gone as quick as it came, you’re right back to splashing water at one of your siblings, but that night, after showers and dinner and climbing into bed, just before you fall asleep, the image of the sun-kissed lake returns to you, hazy with your almost-dreaming but still so warm and striking? poetry is the written act of recognizing the way the light touches the water and the way that you looking at this changes you

a month before we celebrate the 50 years of the revolution that brought an end to one of the darkest periods in our country's history during which we were ruled by a fascist dictatorship, we now have a far-right party being the third most voted on election night with almost 50 seats at the parliament

#i honestly have no words #and the winning party might have to form a coalition with them to form a government #it baffles me that over a million people voted for them

yesterday's therapy session was so heartbreaking i haven't been able to stop thinking about it

#i want to go back in time and hold 6yo me #and kiss her on the forehead #and tell her she doesn't have to be responsible or an adult #and that all she's supposed to do is play and be a kid
