Social Media and Politics - Who Wins?
After living through the last decade, it is hard to remember which has had more impact on which . That is, has social media changed politics or has politics changed social media?
Social media has democratized politics and given lots of people the opportunity to participate in ways that simply were not available before. Social media has also given some bad actors an oversized opportunity to negatively impact the democratic process.
While the jury may still be out as to the impact by social media on politics, there must be a reason behind the impulse of autocrats to shut down the internet and social media.
There were parallels in the use of social media between the U.S. and the Philippines in the most recent elections and this will likely continue in upcoming elections. The question is open as to whether anti-democratic forces in the Philippines, the U.S. and elsewhere will use social media for good, for bad or just shut it down.
Stay tuned.
