Last weekend I finished a commission for lovely Michelle mixing #LostGirl and #WynonnaEarp
Life is a bit crazy right now with work and I’m drawing more slowly than I would like, but boy I did have some good fun with this bunch :)

10 ways to help your friends cope with Independence Day
Yo yo yo, just my yearly, curmudgeonly reminder that some people get the anxiety when the bing bang booms happen in the sky esp. at night. Please be courteous to folks living with anxiety, PTSD, asthma, vestibular conditions, sensory processing disorders, etc etc etc. We love you and we want you to enjoy the pretties, but this is a really hard time for us. There are ways you can help us enjoy this time, too. Here are my best ideas:
1. Ask your person if they want to come along. They may want to, but might need some help feeling comfortable. Be okay with it if they want to pass.
2. Watch the booms from a more secluded, intimate location. Reducing extra stimuli helps us cope with the booms and we don’t want to feel guilty for making you miss them.
3. Ask if we’d like some physical contact during. Even wrapping in a blanket can help us feel more safe if we don’t prefer the hugs.
4. If you know what kind of boom we should expect, talk us through it. It can help us prepare for the scaries.
5. Ask us questions about which aspects we might like about fireworks. I personally love the big crackly ones that look like palm trees bc they don’t go boom and they’re usually far away. Probably don’t ask about our trauma or disabilities unless we bring it up and want to talk about it.
6. Bring stuff we might need. We are going to be too stressed to realize that we should bring our inhaler, prn anxiety med, eye drops, headphones, blanket, otc allergy meds, water, something to fidget with, etc etc etc. You are not responsible for bringing this stuff for us, but seeing that you cared enough to have foresight will help us feel safe and comfortable.
7. Have a way for us to opt out if we need to without it being a huge deal. My personal favorite “safe word” is Tallahassee.
8. Only shoot off fireworks around folks who are going to behave safely and courteously. We most likely don’t want to be sneak attacked or worried about someone else/ourselves getting hurt. Call people out for being unsafe. It shows us you’re here to protect us.
9. Giving us a start and end time is great. If we go to a show that’s ten minutes versus a bonfire that lasts all night, we might cope better.
10. Help us decompress afterward. Getting ice cream or doing a calming activity afterward is a great way to replace the negative stimulus with something pleasurable. It can reinforce a positive experience, help us cope by giving us something to look forward to, and prep us for the sleep times.

A good thread on whether “queer” is a slur and if it should be used or not.

3. Native councils take back the government and educate white people on the fact that we are the immigrants. That’s how I want my dream world to look.
I don’t understand should people only live in cities then?
Nope. The question of unsettling pastoral fantasies isn’t about where you live. It’s not about particular lifestyle choices or anything like that.
It’s about being mindful of the ways in which fantasizing about the rural being more idyllic and more peaceful and more wholesome was 1.) built upon Indigenous genocide and manifest destiny, 2.) contributes directly to ongoing patterns of erasing Indigenous people from the landscape and 3.) is a continuation of settler colonial mindsets around seeing the landscape and the animals and plants within it as servants to your desires and cravings and fantasies rather than looking at them as relatives and understanding the history and the meaning of the land beneath your feet.
You can live anywhere in North America (or really, in the world) and cultivate a more meaningful reality for yourself by learning the Indigenous history of the area, understanding why the Indigenous population got displaced, and thinking of ways to unsettle the narratives of the rural, the outdoors, the farm, as the saviours of (white) humanity, and supporting Indigenous people who are fighting against pipelines, deforestation, or other ecocidal projects.
A couple of ways you can get a start:
1.) go to native-land.ca and see who the Indigenous people are of the land you’re on if you live in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand (the map is always expanding to include other areas)
2.) Interrogate where the image of the farm as an idyllic and pastoral space came from. It’s in TV, movies, books, etc. Ask yourself who you see populating these fantasies and why.
3.) Consider where Indigenous people fit into your worldview when it comes to how you think of what your dream world should look like, and why are they in the form they are? Are they absent?

I love all of the 90s nostalgia in Captain Marvel. Blockbusters, the old computers, the pager, referring to your life partner that you’re raising a kid with as your best friend,

For my wife’s bday this year, we have agreed to spend our money on paying off our house. So instead I’m making a comic book depicting our love story.
This is how my wife sealed the deal. Take note baby gays.
