to add to my contemplations from yesterday: Gray not being from Fiore / the general area makes even less sense when one considers that during the Sun Village arc, his alleged father was at the grave of Mika, shortly after freezing everything in Sun Village which to me opens the frankly very interesting option of Gray being from the area near Sun Village. There is also Gray himself going there after the Tartarus arc and Juvia following him there---while Silver might have some teleportation abilities, we know that Gray does not.
Following up on what was stated in the preamble of this post, here are a few considerations about Iberis:
It is the hometown of Gray, named for this particular plant.
Locals would say that calling it a town was very generous as the settlement was barely more than a 'very large village', but other locals would say that calling it 'our very large homevillage' was a mouthful. By the time Gray was born, this disagreement still came up now and then---the old mayor and his equally old sister liked to bicker about it when they had run out of other topics to bicker about.
Iberis was hardly a poor town / village---there was a nearby silvermine that provided plenty of work and that was also the source of the materials that Gray's mother Doria used for the jewellery she made as she was a silversmith. Gems and other kinds of ore can also be found in the Kerrona Mountains.
Not that anybody in Iberis knew, but in a strange (and magical) way, they had fairly . . . big neighbours, the giants of Sun Village. The reason why they did not know about their neighbours was that while during the arc named after the village, the location was easily accessible, it is usually near impossible to find it---unless you are a giant or have the sigil of the village on your body. In a way, Sun Village both is and is not on the Kerrona Mountains, having been affected by magic for longer than humans have settled on the mountain.
The neighbouring towns they were aware of also got destroyed by Deliora as the demon devastated the entire area. Whether or not Deliora was actually targetting Sun Village and, more importantly, the remnants of Atlas Flame is a question Gray has been trying not to think too much about.
In terms of education, there was a school where Aaron, Gray's father, was a teacher, and for a much younger Gray, his biggest worry was that he could possibly end up in his father's class after the holiday. Most older teens who wanted to continue their academic journey would enrol at the university in Helianthe after their graduation, Aaron's own alma mater.

Gray's Past Relationship
Gray was a celebrity in the mage world by the time he was sixteen and with fame came the reporters,  came the curious questions about him. He was interesting, and his refusal to really give interviews made him only more of a commodity. What followed were deeply embarrassing articles in which he was ‘accused’ of dating anyone who was attractive and close to him. Or not close to him at all, for the more controversial articles— it all depended on the journalist’s mood and the mood of the public that drank up those articles like it was the only drop of water in a desert.
( Suffice to say, he was deeply uncomfortable with it. )
It only meant that he kept the things that mattered to him even closer to himself,  that he talked even less about what mattered to him. Only trusted people  (which meant Cana, for the most part) were privy to the details of his private life and he made a significant effort to keep it like this, especially given how nosy his guildmates could be. One of the many things he kept under wraps was his girlfriend, Chloe. She was a civilian from another city and he was very much in love — and it was something that he wanted to be his alone. Something he did not want to share with the world at large.
This means that when he was asked out by others during the time he was dating Chloe, he did not say 'no, I have a girlfriend'. He just said no, sometimes gently, sometimes less so. His parents had raised Gray with the belief that no means no and that he does not have to explain or elaborate. That he does not have to justify himself---that his comfort is not something he has to negotiate for.
Their relationship lasted until shortly before the S-class exam when they decided to break up as their lifestyles had become increasingly incompatible. He was away more and more due to his mage work and Chloe was going off to study at the university to later become a teacher. It was as amicable as breakups can be, and Gray still holds her in high regard. Of course, the timing meant that while for Gray, the clock was frozen in place for seven years, it did not halt for Chloe (or anyone else, outside of Tenrou)— and it was weird for Gray to wake up, seven years in the future, and learn that his ex-girlfriend had settled down. In some ways, this fuels his discomfort with the years that were stolen from him and from everyone else, too, and it makes him wonder how his life would have continued if he had not been chosen for the exam.

There is something that has always bugged me about the assumption that Deliora's attacks happened somewhere that was not Fiore. Key being that four minors, under the age of ten, were able to get to Fiore without much hassle (?). Those minors are Gray, Sherry, Tobi and Yuuka who all wind up in Fiorean guilds. I know that there is a Gray-centric manga that explores his journey, but really? We are supposed to believe that he crossed several countries without any serious intervention from a responsible adult who says "wait, it's kinda screwed up that a kid travels this far!" I know that no one really seems to care about orphans in this manga and does not mind them being raised in questionable circumstances and places (like a guild that pretty much doubles as a bar), but Gray being able to travel that far seems like a stretch even by the logic of the manga.
It is also strange to me that a non-Fiorean Gray would have known about Makarov/Fairy Tail to the extent that he would place his entire hope (remember, he initially goes to the guild to ask Makarov to undo Iced Shell) on a faraway wizard. Sure, Makarov is a wizard saint and likely famous. However, we have since come to learn that there is a ranking among the Saints which might explain it beyond the obvious answer (Gray needed to have heard about the guild and its master so that he could go to Magnolia and join the guild). There are just two issues: a. Makarov does not rank particularly high, able to be fifth spot at most and b. Makarov is not a dedicated ice magic user. If he was famously an ice user, it could be overlooked and even called logical—Gray would of course seek out another powerful ice user for answers.
However, due to what has already been outlined, this logic does not track. It simply does not exist.
Disbelief might be suspended if there was any main story mention of Gray having sought out more local mages that specialise in ice magic and that going to Makarov was a desperate last ditch effort, but there is nothing in the story that would convey the emotional distress of Makarov being the last resort. It is also just a touch strange that after travelling, allegedly, across continents and countries alike, Gray would just go 'oh okay' when a non-ice user tells him that undoing Iced Shell is impossible. Sure, Makarov is a wizard saint, but what exactly is his qualification to make a definite statement about Iced Shell? The only people we have ever seen use or try to use the spell are Ur and her students, adding to my theory that Ur created Iced Shell. Due to the circumstances, it would make more sense for Gray to take Makarov's word for it if he had not just vaguely heard of Makarov's magical prowess but if he had grown up in an environment where Makarov had been discussed more frequently.
So, here is a proposed and hopefully more logical sound explanation: like almost anything else in the manga, Deliora's attacks happened in Fiore. Probably along the border to Bosco which would account for a few things. The location where Deliora met its end is called Brago. The only thing really known about Brago is that it is not on the map that was shown at one point, early on. (It is also known that Mashima only really planned out Fiore and that the surrounding countries are just there to fill in the spot. Which is fine.) It is also supposedly in 'Isvan'. We later (much later) learn that the continent that Fiore is on is called Ishgar.
This following point is a bit of a stretch and admittedly based on my experience with FMA where the same location was called both Ishval and Ishbal, depending which FMA adaptation is considered, and Ishbar in the German Translation, but I think that those two places---Isvan and Ishgar---are the same thing which allows me to proceed without further ado, especially that all we know about Isvan is derived from one sentence Ur said---that there are more powerful mages west of her location---which seems to indicate that the location is in the east. If we assume that what Isvan equals Ishgar, then what she might have meant is that more powerful mages can be found in the more densely populated areas of Fiore where the guilds are.
One could spitefully say that this is supported by the fact that in the war that, according to canon, hit the entire continent, only Fiorean mages did anything remarkable that was worth any screentime.
Also---if Gray is from Fiore, a lot of plotholes close or are not even opened to begin with.
Note: I generally assume that most canon events take place in Fiore due to the aforementioned fact that pretty much every other place is terribly underdeveloped and I would hope that Mashima would have at least some idea about the place one of his main characters is from. (This does include my belief that the Magic Council is a Fiorean organisation that deals with Fiorean mages since otherwise, I envision it to be one gigantic mess as it is more or less canon that the Royal Family does not really have much to say about the mages living and working in Fiore. Which, uh, sure is a narrative choice that absolutely does not create messy legal situations!)
Why did he know about Fairy Tail/Makarov? Insert any explanation, ranging from a Fairy Tail mage having done work in his hometown prior to Deliora to Gray having read about them in the newspaper. Again: Makarov is a wizard saint. So is Jose Porla, of course, but to a child, Fairy Tail has to sound more appealing than Phantom Lord. And those two are the only wizard saints that are easily accessible to a child as they are guild masters and guilds (at least Fairy Tail) appear to be public spaces that can be entered by non-members.
To refer back to the earlier thought: that Gray might have heard of Makarov before. This really is not a stretch. Makarov is of course not going to show up in any publications like the Mage I Want To Be My Boyfriend ranking the way (I'm fairly sure) Siegrain did, but there is a canon interview that the Sorcerer Weekly magazine conducted with the entire guild. To think that Gray would have had access to newspaper articles or other publications does not seem like much of a stretch---he was born a mage, after all, and why would his parents keep him about information about other mages?
Why did he speak the Fiorean language? Well, he is from Fiore. It is generally doubtful if there are even multiple actively spoken languages in Earthland due to the fact that no matter where the characters go (and that includes a Mirror World), they can be understood and they understand others. The only character speaking a different language is Minerva when she calls upon the God of War. Then there is the script Freed uses for his magic, but I cannot recall if he or somebody else ever reads the script out loud.
A lot about Deliora, actually. The entire Deliora Plot that is witnessed during the actual manga also unfolds in Fiore. We can assume that Sherry's magic played a big role in getting Deliora to Galuna Island for the Moondrip Ritual, but even with that in mind, the entire story unfolds much smoother if Deliora was already somewhat in the vicinity of the island when Lyon started his plan.
His silence about his backstory. In a previous headcanon I said that one of the reasons why Gray and Natsu clashed as children was the very different way they dealt with their respective trauma. Natsu copes by telling everyone about Igneel---perhaps because saying it again and again helps him feel reassured that it was real, that despite what some adults say, it did happen. Gray copes by bottling his trauma about the deaths of his parents and Ur's sacrifice up. He cannot talk about it. He feels guilty* about his role in it. Makarov obviously has to know about where Gray is from and what the kid went through as Gray would have had to tell him in order to ask for help. I think Gray's silence becomes a lot more impactful and interesting if Deliora did happen in Fiore. If people around him know about the demon and heard the whispers about the end it met. If for ten years, Gray stewed in the knowledge that his choices spelled the end for someone who is now revered as a hero. As a saint.
* This guilt is obviously not healthy and it is undeserved. Gray should not feel guilty as it was not actually his fault but more or less a chain of events that, once triggered, could only lead to a bad outcome, but if guilt was rational, then there would be much less angst. Likewise, if anyone in this manga would seek the help of a therapist, then they might actually be well-adjusted.

He rubbed his face, careful to keep some resemblance of line of sight on the usual troublemakers while also focusing on Lisanna. They had not had much time to catch up lately. Or well. At all. He could probably count the number of times they had spoken since she had come back on both his hands---which would not do. Sipping his drink that was an odd temperature (too cold to be warm, too warm to be cold), he took a breath and reestablished eye contact.
Tumblr media
'' I'd say not much, but wouldn't that mean I call myself stupid? '' he pondered as he idly created ice cubes in his coffee. Yes. Coffee would not help him with fixing his sleep schedule, but homestly? It was not like he wanted to sleep. There was too much on his mind that would be all too keen to exploit his lowered guard . . . and he could not permit that. '' And well---I'm doing tired. Lots of work, little of . . . sleep. But it's fine, it's fine---at least it's productive and I'm being useful. ''

he was tired,  and it was not the kind of tired any amount of sleep could fix.  he was sitting  /  hiding in a corner of the guild hall,  slouching in his chair and having to keep his head from falling onto the table again and again.  as little good as any amount of sleep would do him,  his body had not yet gotten the message.  a goddamn shame.
Tumblr media
hearing a noise near him,  he moved his head so fast that he almost dislocated everything he could dislocate,  he shrunk back together when he realised that it was only lisanna and not someone who could pick a fight.  ‘ ‘ yo,  lisanna, ’ ’  he said as he reached for his glass again.  ‘ ‘ what can i do for you? ’ ’
For someone who looked half dead, he sure moved fast, she thought. She held her hands up, as if warding off an attack, though she laughed a little, “Easy there, Gray…”
Tumblr media
Not that she could blame him for being a little jumpy, especially not after recent events and all ( and besides, it wasn’t the best idea to be completely relaxed within the guildhall anyway, considering the number of fights that could break out, or stray objects that could go flying ). Moving over to him, she pulled out an empty chair and took her place on it, propping her elbow on the table and giving a small shrug before resting her head in her hand and watching him.
“Nothing, really, I just…wanted to see how you were doing,” she said, offering a smile, “Anything on your mind?”

When dealing with Lyon (@emperorvastias), Gray will pretend not to know the name of Lyon's trusted right hand woman. Does he know her name? Absolutely. Will he refer to Sherry by a multitude of other alcoholic drinks that could pass for names (think Brandy, Gin, etc) to see how long it will take for Lyon to say something. Absolutely.

Adina nodded, taking the moment to look out of the window. Travel never quite lost its appeal, even if she often stayed in the same location. Such was the fate of a mayor. Maybe that was why she had been so put off by that Universe One spell---her role was that of a guardian of a region. Universe One had taken her one advantage away from her when it had changed the landscape.
She did not like being put at a disadvantage.
Looking back to Lyon, she shrugged. '' Like one of my brothers, I wasn't born without a single drop of magic in my veins, '' she said. Anders and her had often joked about it, how the 'even numbered' kids had been magical while they had not gotten any magic. '' So I don't get magic beyond a certain degree. And what I do understand is what I picked up through osmosis over the years. Frans---he invented a spell to properly date art objects---never really . . . shut up about his research. I never minded it, but nothing about his research lets me make an educated statement about demonic miasma. ''
She was a little bothered by that, truthfully. Especially since the last person to be face-to-face with the demon had been her little sister. And for more then fifteen years, she had worried. She had been afraid of the possibility that Ur's soul had gotten trapped in the miasma. This had not happened, but---Adina was unfortunately very good at realising bad possibilities.
She winked, a smile growing on her face. '' If I disappear now that I told you about the missing miasma, please consider the possibility that I was disappeared by whoever decided this information should be kept under wraps, '' she added. '' Politics is a dirty business. ''
Tumblr media
lyon shrugged at her point, which was fair enough. he had heard Enough of the old man comments by now, though. there were enough people in the world with different color hair he wasn't sure why he always got comments about his age. maybe it was his dispotion, too. oh well. other people were annoying.
the topic of helianthe and its rebirth was one of interest to him. moreso because of sherry, true, but if he could get good information to tell her maybe it wouldn't be so bad. it would probably never be home for her again, just as hellbore and iris weren't to him anymore. it can be difficult. "universe one was — well, annoying is one word for it. i am happy the person who casted it is dead, personally. it uprooted many and made previous safety measurements moot." which was what annoyed him the most about it, really. he didn't mind the part of being thrown around so much, he knew what he was doing. what he was fighting against. it was the civilians who didn't know, who had no idea what was going on. those were who lyon worried for.
"it is curious, what happened to the miasma. but i supposed it could be one of those situations where you don't look a gift horse in the mouth." his nose wrinkled once his sentence ended. "even if that leaves me unsatisfied. greatly." his curiosity was too strong. what could have gotten rid of it? he tried to reach back into his own demonic research. "it's been a while since i considered demon lore more deeply. perhaps it was the true defeat of zeref?"

There was a smirk on the older ice mage’s face as he crossed his arms and peered at Gray. Lyon was in a good mood, all things considered. “I know I’m late but — I heard you got in trouble for joining a cult?” Lyon rolled his eyes playfully and tutted at the younger mage. “You couldn’t even find it within yourself to become a leader? Sad.”
Annoyance did not even begin to cover the emotion that Gray felt as he looked at his erstwhile fellow student. Lyon had always had an easy (a too easy) time getting under his skin, and it seemed that this had never changed. He wished it had. How Lyon had even found out about this was beyond Gray for a moment, then he remembered that the pink-haired chick Lyon had been hanging around since their 'reunion' on Galuna Island was the supervisor of Mary's probation period. It looked like Mary had snitched.
That, too, was annoying.
'' Not everyone here wants to be an overachiever, Lyon. '' Grays brows furrowed as he frowned at the white-haired man. Was Lyon taller than him, nowadays? If so, that would be most annoying. '' And having been a cult leader at, what? Twelve? That's not the flex you seem to think it is. And, huh---come to think of it . . . you brought your friend with you for backup since your social skills were probably a tad rusty, right? What was her name, again? Brandy? ''
Gray knew the correct name. He also knew what it felt like when a tree puppet chomped down on someone's body. But since Lyon seemed convinced that Gray was an idiot, well, that was a pretty easy role to play.

The small glowing blob is protostar L1527! Caught in the glow of its sunrise-like creation the baby is only 100,00 years old! It can take up to 50 million years for a star to reach the size of our sun. This infant has a long time to go.
Located 460 light years away this is one hell of a childhood photo!
