Early production deep-dive - Part 6: The first trailer
💚 Congrats to everyone who celebrated this 20th Dannyversary! 💚
Whether you participated in the Dannypocalypse or paid homage to the show in your own way, you’ve all made this year’s celebration truly special, which is why we’re also coming again with new content this weekend.
In our last post, we covered in great detail all the promotional content of the show's first episode, and during our hunt for the premiere’s footage, we stumbled upon another great find: the show’s very first trailer!
For this post let's rewind back to six months before the premiere, back to November 29th of 2003, the day when the first trailer of the show aired on the channel, during an All Grown Up marathon.
“Title - danny phantom teaser’s airing! If you watched AGU then you already know this but, Nickelodeon is now airing teasers (commercials) for "Danny Phantom"! It's advertising a April 2004 release.” (Source: https://animesuperhero.com/forums/threads/danny-phantom-teasers-airing.3501651/)
The video was a 30-second trailer that contained animated boards of the original unused theme opening, which got written and even recorded, but was later scrapped, as discussed in Part 5 of our previous posts.
The trailer also featured shots of the first episode, plus the show’s catch phrase used at the time: ‘Not seeing is believing’. It was a very dynamic video, with multiple action shots and close-ups shown in sequence, inside panels that slid in and out of the screen.

[Image Description: Set of 8 snapshots from the first Danny Phantom trailer. The words ‘Courtesy of CDCB2’ are written in white at the bottom left of the screen in all of them.
Image 1 - A white splash with the words ‘April 2004’ in black inside. The splash is on top of a black and white background, with some partial shots of the show displayed. There is a green ghost underneath the splash.
Image 2 - Danny in his Phantom form, seen from the torso up. He is glancing at the left with an upturned eyebrow and serious face. There is a green glow around him and the whole image has green hues. There are two other shots in black and white at the bottom right corner, only partially showing hands.
Image 3 - Danny is standing with his knees bent and hands closed in fists. He is in his human form, wearing his usual white t-shirt with red accents and red circle on his chest, blue jeans and a red pair of shoes. He has a determined look and there are white transformation rings around his torso. This scene is shown inside a screen. Behind it, to the right, is a black and white shot of Danny holding a door open with one hand and carrying a lantern on the other. The lantern points directly forward.
Image 4 -  Danny is crouching down, one knee to the ground and arms up, body ready to jump forward. He is in his ghost form, face serious as he looks to a wall at his left. This scene is shown on a floating screen with two diagonal rips, dividing it in three.
Image 5 - Inside a floating screen, Danny is in his Phantom form holding the Fenton thermos in front of him, which is shooting out a beam. He is facing the left and is completely coated in a light blue glow.
Image 6 - Danny in his ghost form fighting a green liquidy ghost to his left. Danny is mid-action of throwing a punch and the ghost has its mouth open and hands up, in a threatening pose. The background is blue and the scene is inside a screen that floats in front of a black and white background.
Image 7 - Danny stands in front of an orange background, seen from the torso up and looking at the camera with a smug smile. He is in his Phantom form. There is a white shape that looks like splashed liquid next to his head, with the text ‘Danny Phantom’ and in smaller text below it ‘A Brand New Nicktoon Series’ inside. There is an orange ghost flying past the ‘y’ in Danny.
Image 8 - Danny Phantom stands in front of a dark background, seen from the torso up and looking at the camera with a smug smile. There is a shape that looks like splashed liquid next to his head, with the text  ‘Not seeing is Believing’’ inside. All the lines are white and the inside of the shapes are the same color as the background, there is a soft blue glow around the splash and Danny, which is meant to give the impression that everything is transparent and ghostly. Danny’s eyes are green. /end ID]
And here it is:

“Narrator: Coming April 2004, Nickelodeon’s new action hero. He’s going- going ghost. Danny: I’m going ghost! I think I figured out what these powers are for. I hope I’m right! Narrator: Danny Phantom. A brand new Nicktoon series coming this April to Nickelodeon. Not seeing is believing.”
This trailer marked the start of the marketing for the show, with more promotional content being released for the public, in both video and print format, as the show’s premiere date got closer. But to keep this short, we’ll cover those in the next posts instead!

The Show’s Premiere: April 3rd 2004
👻💚 Happy 20th Dannyversary to all the phans!! 💚👻
Between all the Danno chaos here on tumblr, we bring a very special post that covers in detail the very first time one of our ghost boy’s episodes got aired on television. This was such a precious find and we’re very excited to share it with you all!
Danny Phantom’s first episode “Mystery Meat” premiered April 3rd on the USA Nickelodeon channel at 9:30/8:30 central pm, right after the 2004 Kid’s Choice Awards. And before the episode aired, the channel featured a couple of DP trailers during the KCA’s commercials.
The first version was a quick 15-second trailer that got aired about halfway of the award ceremony, and then was shown again two more times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1ikBFFQROY; Trailer at 25:00-25:15 & 34:20-34:35 & 40:03-40:18)
[Image Description: Two snapshots of the Danny Phantom trailer.
Image 1 - Three floating screens in front of a blue background that has shots of Danny playing. Each floating screen shows a different scene of the show, currently they all have shots of Danny in his human form from the torso up. First screen on the bottom is Danny in school wearing his backpack and glancing to his left. He is rubbing the back of his neck with his right hand and looking worried. Second screen in the top left is Danny in a suit looking to his right with a worried expression. Tucker in the background. Last screen in the top right is Danny looking down, mouth open and looking worried.  In front of these screens, to the left and only slightly obscuring the shots, are white letters  that read: ‘Half Teenager’.
Image 2 - Features the same three floating screens in front of the blue background, but now slightly moved to the left. Top left screen shows Danny in his human form holding both arms out to separate Sam and Tucker. Top right screen shows Danny in his Phantom form holding the Fenton thermos in front of him, which is shooting out a beam. He is facing the left of the screen and is completely coated in a light blue glow. Bottom screen shows Danny mid-combat in the air, he is in his Phantom form facing forward, one hand up and enveloped in ectoplasm. In front of these screens, to the right and only slightly obscuring them, are white letters that read: ‘Half Ghost’. /end ID]
(Note: The timestamps on the transcription sections are from the video uploaded at the end of this post, not the original youtube video.)
-Transcription - First trailer (0:00-0:15 & 0:16-0:30 & 0:31-0:45)
“Narrator: Half teenager... Danny: I-I-I’m Danny. Narrator: Half ghost. All new Nicktoon. Narrator: Danny Phantom. The world premiere. Tonight at 9:30/8:30 central right after the Kid’s Choice Awards. Not seeing is believing.”
The second version of the trailer aired right before the premiere and was very similar to the previous one, except for a slight difference on the last frame and last lines of the narrator, which stated the world premiere was coming up next.
Here’s a side by side comparison of the differences in the two trailers:

[Image Description: There are two very similar snapshots of the Danny Phantom trailers.
Image 1 - Danny Phantom stands in front of a black background, seen from the torso up and looking at the camera with a smug smile. His hair is white, his eyes are green and he’s wearing a black jumpsuit with white gloves, boots, collar, and a white stripe across his waist. There is a white shape that looks like splashed liquid next to his head, with the following text inside: ‘Danny Phantom’ and in smaller text below that says ‘Tonight 9:30/8:30c’. There is an orange ghost flying past the ‘y’ in Danny with a fading black tail that wraps under ‘Danny’ and through ‘Phantom’ and stopping in the ‘o’ of ‘Phantom’. On the top left of the splash there’s the Nickelodeon logo plus the Kid’s Choice Awards 2004 logo, written on top of a blue background.
Image 2 - Danny’s pose and background are the same as the first one, the only differences are the lack of the Kid’s Choice Awards logo and the text by his side, which now reads: ‘Danny Phantom’ and in smaller text under it ‘Coming up next!’. /end ID]
-Transcription - Second trailer (00:45-1:00)
“Narrator: Half teenager... Danny: I-I-I’m Danny. Narrator: Half ghost. All new Nicktoon. Danny Phantom. The world premiere. Coming up next! Not seeing is believing.”
This trailer was immediately followed by a 10-second countdown that featured Danny walking in front of the portal, then several scenes of the show floating around in smaller screens in between the countdown numbers, and finally, Danny punching the screen as the countdown ended.

Image 3 - Tucker holding his PDA, wearing his usual yellow long-sleeve shirt, glasses, a red beret and a blue backpack. He has an apologetic smile while looking at Danny on his right. Danny is leaning close to Tucker, while staring him down with an annoyed look. He is in his ghost form, seen from the hips up.
Image 4 - Sam and Tucker seen from the chest above, they are both looking at the right with surprised expressions. Tucker is wearing the same outfit as before, and Sam has her usual black sleeveless crop-top with a purple circle on her chest. /end ID]
-Transcription - Next episodes trailer (1:21-1:51)
“Narrator: First you see him. Then, you see him again! Get ready for two back-to-back episodes of Nickelodeon’s newest Nicktoon: Danny Phantom. First, can Danny stop the class beauty from becoming the class beast? Danny: I’m going on a date with a dragon? Narrator: These back-to-back episodes of Danny Phantom: next Friday starting at 8:30/7:30 Central. Only on Nickelodeon.”
Here’s the video with all the promotional content aired during the premiere, so you can experience what it was like! None of the videos are cut out so the first trailer is repeated three times.

Early production deep-dive - Part 5: The first theme opening
Some of the newer phans might not know this yet, but the theme opening used on the show was actually the second version written and produced!
The first theme opening had Guy Moon’s vocals, who was the composer of the show, and had to be scrapped and rewritten because the channel wanted to include more of Danny’s story in the intro. The song that inspired the style of this first version was called, believe it or not, ‘The Invisible Man’ by Queen.
“Butch Hartman: Bob Boyle and I were in Korea in July of 2000. [...] Well, I thought I'd heard every Queen song there was up to that point (I'm a huge fan) but on comes this song called "The Invisible Man". It's a great song and it's all about, yes, a man who is invisible. The lyrics were cool, but the coolest part of the song was the awesome bass line right at the top. I wish I could sing it for you now, but, hey, computers aren't THAT great yet. Long story short, I listened to the song over and over, just really digging on the bass line. And the more I listened the more I thought, "Man, I'd love to use this song as a theme song for a show someday'. Seriously, that's what I thought. Anyway, about 18 months goes by, I pitch "Phantom", it gets going and now we need a theme. I wrote a bunch of lyrics and gave them to Guy Moon then I played him that awesome bass line. I said" I don't care what music you use, just give me a bass line like this". So he did. It's definitely not an exact replica of course, but it's most definitely the same flavor. And my lyrics? Well as many of you know there was another theme for Danny that was written before the current one. This one was a lot more vague about who Danny was and didn't really explain his origin. I thought it was awesome, but the Network wanted me to explain Danny's origin in the title so I had to go and rewrite. And that's how we ended up with the current theme.” (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20080102092951/http://hometown.aol.com/zcat6/IntBH2006p8.html)
This version of the theme song was shared with the public in late July of 2003, during a Nickelodeon panel at the 2003 San Diego Comic Con. The schedule section for the 2003 Con shows which of the crew members went there along with Butch.
“July 20, 2003 K 1:30–3:00 Nickelodeon Presents: Teenage Robot and Fairly Oddparents— Find out what’s coming down the Nicktoons pipeline in a panel discussion with members of the Nickelodeon creative teams. First, get a sneak peak at episodes of Nick’s new show Teenage Robot, about a super-powered robot with a super-sensitive teenage heart, who was built to protect the planet but just wants to be a normal teenager, premiering on August 1st. Panelists include Alex Kirwan (art director) and Rob Renzetti (creator). Then join the Fairly OddParents gang and catch a clip from their first TV movie Abra Catastrophe, plus a sneak peak at two new shows coming from FOP creator Butch Hartman, Danny Phantom and Crash Nebula. Panelists include Butch Hartman (creator/executive producer of FOP, Danny Phantom and Crash Nebula), Steve Marmel (producer/story editor for FOP/Danny Phantom, creator/co-executive producer for Crash Nebula) and Bob Boyle (producer/art director for FOP and Danny Phantom). Each screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Room 6B” (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20040603152428/http://www.comic-con.org/Pages/CCI03-SunProg.html)
As was customary in forums, the details on these events were shared by people who attended, like this LiveJournal user who mentioned the theme opening being played at the panel.
“Final News Update from ComicCon (Sunday) Ok, this is the last bit from ComicCon so enjoy it: [...] *Teenage Robot/Fairly Oddparents - 2 episodes of My Life as a Teenage Robot screened - Danny Phantom theme opening and Crash Nebula trailer screened - Crash Nebula is only a pilot for now, but uses a lot of celshading - another Fairly Oddparents TV movie is in the works where Timmy travels through television *2 PPG episode titles: Nuthin' Special, and Neighbor Hood Later” (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20230821183005/https://adultswimfans.livejournal.com/7531.html)

The current section’s title ‘Danny Phantom’ is displayed in white colors, with the text ‘Coming Soon!‘ underneath. There’s an illustration of Danny on the left. -Lyrics:
(He’s a phantom) (Danny Phantom) (Danny Phantom) A key to his life has changed Molecules rearranged Ghosts are so deranged (He’s gonna catch them all ‘cause he is Danny Phantom) Spirits don’t stand a chance Senses all enhanced Powers so advanced (He’s a Phantom) (He’s gonna catch them all ‘cause he is Danny Phantom) Unleashing all the freaks Onto his hometown streets Now everyone he beats (He’s a Phantom) (He’s a Phantom) Gonna fly through the wall You can’t see him at all If they are big or small or tall He’s gonna catch them all ‘cause he is Danny Phantom Gonna catch them all ‘cause he is Danny Phantom Gonna catch them all ‘cause he is Danny Phantom
On another note, we wish all the phans who will participate in it a very chaotic Dannypocalypse tomorrow!
We will also be posting a very rare and special content here later on that day, so be sure to come check it out amidst all the Dannos! 👻💚👻

Early production deep-dive - Part 4: Web information
On the next annual upfront of the channel, hosted on March 19th 2003, Nick would announce the show once again, this time getting more attention, enough to prompt internet users to go fishing for more information.
On the Nicktoons Forum of the site Animesuperhero, one person returned with hot news after checking the crew’s personal sites.
“Title -  Danny Phantom/Crash Nebula/Kim Possible Artwork  have you guys seen this? http://www.silvertoons.com/silvertoons/portfolio.asp” (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20210413012318/https://animesuperhero.com/forums/threads/danny-phantom-crash-nebula-kim-possible-artwork.3384331/)
“Title - Danny Phantom /Crash Nebula Theme Song i apologize if this has been posted but http://butchhartman.com/html/danny.htm and then http://butchhartman.com/html/crash.htm has the theme (im guessing) rolling in the background.” (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20210413012313/https://animesuperhero.com/forums/threads/danny-phantom-theme-song.3407701/)
The first link led to Stephen Silver’s personal site, specifically, his ‘Portfolio’ section where he displayed several of his character designs for the shows he worked on, including Danny Phantom background characters, ghostly villains like Lunch Lady and Skulker, and of course, the main character himself. These were publicly shared as early as July 13th 2003, presumably even earlier.

Image 2 - Two rows of three characters each. First row features ghost cowboys and the second row shows human cops.
Image 3 - Two rows of two characters each. First row shows the ghost Lunch Lady and a human chef. Second row features a human janitor and a human lunch lady, with a different design than the ghost Lunch Lady.
Image 4 - Two rows of two characters each. First row shows designs for the Technus/Skulker fusion armor and the second row shows a character in both human and non-human form.
Image 5 - Three rows of characters. First row shows one adult and three kids, the first two are background characters while the third one is presumably an early design Danny and the fourth is presumably an early design for Tucker. The second row has three human kids and the third row shows Danny twice in his Phantom form.
Image 6 - Two rows with one character each. The top row features Skulker, in an early design where his ghostly hair was orange instead of the usual green. The bottom row shows the design for a non-human character, most likely a ghost. /end ID]
The second link led to Butch Hartman’s site, which had sections for audio clips of his shows, where he had uploaded the original (first version) of the Danny Phantom theme song as early as July 4th 2003.

Early production deep-dive - Part 3: Cast and crew
Around that time, crew members were getting hired, the show was getting developed and auditions were being held for the cast.
“David Kaufman: The auditions were actually about a year before the show went into production. I remember getting a call from my agent saying that it looked good that they wanted me for "Danny Phantom" and I actually had to try to remember what they were talking about!” (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20070328222924/http://hometown.aol.com/zcat6/DKInt2005pg2.html)
The first recording session for the pilot occurred months later, on November 21st 2002, then back again at the beginning of 2003 for the next episodes:
“David Kaufman: Okay...you got me to dig out my old 2002 appointment book! The first recording session for "Danny Phantom" was November 21, 2002 when we recorded "Mystery Meat." (We had a table reading of the episode on November 14.) I do not remember the very first line of dialogue -- but you can hear it by just watching that episode! [...] The first Danny Phantom recording was in November of 2002! We recorded the next five episodes from January 2003 to June 2003 -- and then kicked into higher gear when Nickelodeon picked up the show for an additional 7 episodes before the show even aired! (I guess they liked what they were hearing and seeing, and were figuring that you would, too!) We've been going fairly steady ever since, and last week we recorded  -- episode {Season 2 title omitted} #33!” (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20070328222924/http://hometown.aol.com/zcat6/DKInt2005pg2.html)

Early production deep-dive - Part 2: The new Nicktoon
It wasn’t until October 2001, during a dinner with Nickelodeon’s executives Albie Hetch and Kevin Kay, that he would pitch the idea for Danny Phantom and end up with a deal for the pilot on the spot:
“Butch Hartman: To top it off they said, "Hey, got any other ideas?" Whoa. This was a big moment. I had Danny Phantom in my head, but I wasn't really prepared to talk about it and I had no idea they were gonna ask me this. What do I do?? Well, I did the obvious - I held my breath and dove in. So, with really nothing more than the cool name I'd thought up, and a few drawings (which I didn't even have with me, I had to describe them!) plus a few other character ideas - best friends, parents, etc. I told them about the show in about 30 seconds. There was a pause and then Albie - the big boss - said, "Can you have the pilot episode done by March?" That was it. It was sold just like that in a restaurant in October, 2001. I was floored.” (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20080102170004/http://hometown.aol.com/zcat6/IntBH2006p3.html)
(Here’s the pitch document, written later along with Steve Marmel: https://archive.org/details/dannyphantompitch/mode/2up )
Butch once again contacted Boyle and Marmel, who were also part of the Fairly OddParents crew at the time, and together they worked on the pilot until January 2002, when Nickelodeon executive Margie Cohn, and Kevin Kay informed him that Nick was asking for 6 episodes now:
“Butch Hartman: This was huge news! Now we were officially making a series! This means we had to stop everything and regroup. We were making Danny into a series now and we really had to be aware of the progression of the characters and the expansion of Danny's world. So work commenced on building the Danny Phantom universe: Amity Park. Fenton Works. His friends, his family, what specific powers he had, etc. (Keep in mind, we were still making Fairly Oddparents at the same!) Everyone involved was awesome. We brought on character designers Shannon Tindell and Steve Silver. They pretty much came up with all the main character designers except for Danny. That was mostly me, then Steven Silver jumped in and we finalized it together. Then Shannon left and character designer Ben Balestreri was brought in. He really helped move things along, too. Everyone else involved worked really hard to make sure that - even though we were making two series' at once - both series got a 100% commitment from everyone.” (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20080102170004/http://hometown.aol.com/zcat6/IntBH2006p3.html)
The newest Nicktoon was soon announced to the public, along with four other shows, on March 12th 2002, during the annual Nickelodeon upfront:

Early production deep-dive - Part 1: The show’s creation
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the show’s premiere, and to celebrate it until April 3rd we’ll have multiple daily posts of cool information we’ve found about the show.
For starters, let’s take a deep dive back to the early 2000s, even before 2004, all the way to 2001 when the show’s idea first came up!
On an interview for the DPOFPA (Danny Phantom Official Forum Picture Archive), Butch Hartman shared the story of how he first came up with the idea: it was February 2001, after hearing that the channel was looking for a boy’s action show and during a drive back to California with his mother, that he brainstormed different names until settling on Danny Phantom, although it almost didn’t go that way:
"Butch Hartman: But it's kind of fun to know he was almost called "Jackie Phantom". Once I had the name I knew it would have to have something to do with ghost fighting or monster hunting. C'mon? "Danny Phantom"? He's not gonna fight bad breath!  I was also going to give him a group of super powered teen sidekicks to help him. The entire show was going to be called "Danny Phantom and the Specter Detectors". (Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20080102170004/http://hometown.aol.com/zcat6/IntBH2006p3.html)
Although he contacted a couple people about it, such as Bob Boyle and Steve Marmel, who would later become DP’s art director and DP’s co-writer, respectively, Hartman worked on the development by himself on the first months, letting the idea simmer while trying out different concepts and styles, until settling on an early character design for his main character:

[Image Description: Three images of black and white early concept designs of the character Danny Phantom drawn by Butch Hartman.
Image 1 -Danny in a crouching pose, hovering above the ground. His hair is black and he looks forward slightly to the right with a surprised face. He wears a white jumpsuit with a black collar, along with white gloves and black boots. There’s text underneath: ‘How does he have phantom powers? 2/9/01 Friday’.
Image 2 - Danny standing in a confident pose, hands closed in fists and a smile on his face. His hair is white and his eyebrows are black. He’s wearing a black jumpsuit with his collar, belt, gloves and boots all colored white. The text ‘Danny Phantom’ is written to the right side, next to his legs, and below is Butch’s signature and the date ‘3/01’.
Image 3 - Two Danny designs side by side. The Danny on the left is standing with his hands balled into fists by his sides, and he’s smiling while looking to the right. His hair and eyebrows are black, his jumpsuit and gloves are white, while his boots and collar are black. He also wears a black underwear above his jumpsuit, reminiscent of old superhero costumes. The next design shows Danny in movement, like he’s mid-walk while flying forward. He has a surprised face while looking at the right, one of his hands is closed while the other is open and facing outward. His jumpsuit, gloves, boots and collar are all white, except for his underwear which is black. He has a ghost outlined on his chest as a logo. /end ID]

Not seeing is believing
Less than four days until the 20th Dannyversary, so we’re giving you guys a sneak peak with a fun fact!
Our header and the phrase “Not seeing is believing” in our first post came straight from the first DP trailer, which featured the sentence as the show’s catchphrase in its last frame. The phrase was used on all trailers up until the premiere.

[Image Description: Danny Phantom stands in front of a dark background, seen from the torso up and looking at the camera with a smug smile. There is a shape that looks like splashed liquid next to his head, with the white text  ‘Not seeing is believing.’ inside. Only the outlines have color, a light blue/white, while the rest are a dark color, which is meant to give the impression that everything is transparent. Danny’s eyes are green. There are white words in the left bottom corner that read: 'Courtesy of CDCB2'. /end ID]
Tomorrow we’ll have more information to share with you, so keep your eyes open for it!

Welcome to the unofficial Danny Phantom Archive!
Disclaimer: The content contained within this blog is property of their respective owners and is uploaded here for archival purposes only and the blog holds no ownership or copyright of the media. On request from the copyright holder(s) any and all media herein will be removed immediately.
- What is the DPA?
The DPA’s purpose is to gather and archive all official promotional content of the show Danny Phantom in one place. The database can include everything from TV commercials and magazine articles, to behind the scenes art shared by the artists of the show, old forum posts, merchandise and much more. In the process, the DPA will always focus on getting primary sources whenever possible. We’ll share all the information found through this page, adding context, sources and any other relevant information for the phans. However, this is not our main focus, and while we’ll try to keep posting consistently, currently there is no set schedule.
- How to contact us if you have stuff to be archived?
You can reach out by sending an ask or DM to this blog and we’ll respond as soon as possible. Please make the source clear, attach the picture/video if possible or describe with details the piece of DP media you’ve found so we can check if we have it already on our database.
- How can you help out without much effort?
Archive things! Most of our content was found through old websites that were archived on places like the Internet Archive, which allowed them to be preserved even through copyright strikes, forum purges and site shutdowns that erased the original content from the internet.
Another option that we use as backup is Archive Today, but if none of those sound good you can use the good ol’ screenshot, which coupled with Image Descriptions is a super easy way to preserve information while simply posting it to your own blog or just saving it on your device.
