The breath Alex let loose slipped out soundlessly, through her nose, the quiet stagnation that’d fallen across the room in the wake of a taxing test of a day — an equally trying month, a year and some change — lending itself to the bittersweet knowing that softened the shift of her glance.

It'd never been quite as easy as not worrying, or whether things might change the overshadowed equilibrium Alex had found in her little sister's sun - bright orbit. If there was anything in the unknowable universe she'd been able to rely on, without question, it was Kara: her undeniable strength. Her enduring, long suffering heart. But it wasn't difficult to conceptualise a Supergirl bled of her superhuman resistance for the benefit of some adversary or other of Lillian Luthor's caliber.

Neither was it easy to shake the ever crawling, prickling helplessness that itched somewhere in the marrow of her bones.

" Yeah, " she simply relented, subdued, the weight of her gaze brimming with a still unfettered unease despite Kara's best efforts to assuage it. That they'd always been at their strongest together hardly needed to be reiterated. Neither did the actuality that, whatever happened, Alex would be there in a heartbeat. That, when push came to inevitable shove, there was nothing she wouldn’t do to shield her sister from harm.

" I just — I need you to to promise me that you'll be careful. " A futile piece of advice, perhaps, given the coat of arms emblazoned on Kara's chest. " I am just trying to protect you. "

There were always going to be consequences for the choices Kara Supergirl made. Some she carried alone, the weight of her decisions preferable to living with regret that she could have done more, that she could have saved everyone. Then there were the moments when it wasn’t just Kara who had to shoulder the burden of her choices. When the one person she loved most was forced to carry them with her.

“I hear you, Alex, I do. I’m sorry that I scared you.” Kara bowed her head, accepting Alex's concern for her safety. She understood how it felt, the crippling fear of loss, fear that at any moment her sister could die out there. That was the cost of doing the right thing, doing the brave thing, doing the only thing either of them knew.

It didn't make it any easier to accept.

Kara reached to place a warm hand against Alex’s arm, squeezing with a soft reassurance, lifting her head to search her sister's eyes. “I meant what I said. We’ve always been together and no matter what happens nothing will ever change that.”

Somewhere beneath the tense - sharp set of her jaw, the furrow of a crease in her brow, Alex felt her heart threaten a tenterhooked lurch.

That wasn't a pledge that could be taken lightly. Wasn't something that could be in any way guaranteed.

That Kara was capable of carrying spaceships, guiding smouldering airplanes out of the sky with nothing more than her own two hands, her own overtly alien, and often poorly disguised strength was undeniable. But it didn't make her unbreakable. Didn't mean she might not possess some untapped and uncharted weakness, as unfathomable as her aversion to kryptonite had once been, that hadn't yet been exploited — and still could be. It didn't mean she couldn't bleed, or worse.

And nothing terrified Alex more than the thought.

" Kara, I know that you're bulletproof, " she rebuked, the unease ( the habitually suppressed, yet constantly present fear that one day her super strength might not be enough ) that carried that statement nearly impossible to completely hide. " And that you can literally move skyscrapers — but that doesn't mean that you can afford to be reckless, or that you can't still be hurt. "

Neither did an imperviousness to bullets, much like Kara's penchant for wingless flight, mean an inability to die.

The Luthor matriarch's drab prison garb, like the iron bars she'd spent the last few months behind — like the flaking cell block numbers stenciled onto the cold, slate grey of the room's cinderblock walls — seemed just about bleak enough to denigrate her on its own. And rightfully so; And yet, since Alex's emergence through the interview room's two - man - guarded doors, Lillian had never lost her seemingly unaffected half - smirk. Had never quite shed the ingratiating outward affectation of perhaps knowing something that might help her leverage her way to freedom.

So, whatever Alex's stolidness suggested, she'd never be completely above wanting to twist the proverbial knife.
