Taking notes for the Uvalde episode is just me watching about four minutes of the PBS documentary with all the interviews of the cops post-shooting before I scream, “What the actual FUCK is wrong with you?!” and restraining myself from throwing my phone.

Me: I think I’m going to pick my next dealer’s choice, and I’m busy at my other jobs later this month so I should probably make it easier …

I’m spring-cleaning and hanging up pictures and whatnot, and it occurs to me that if a robber broke in and saw the pictures on the podcasting side of my living room, they’d probably turn around and hastily exit the apartment.
You know, if Professor hadn’t hogtied him and called the police already.

Look, I’m sure I’ll do this episode eventually, once the investigation is done.
I’d really appreciate not having to do it a second time because of … you know. *gestures at tweet*

The crew of a massive container ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday warned of power issues before the collision, which caused the bridge to collapse into the frigid Patapsco River, officials said.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the warning from the ship’s crew likely saved lives.
“We’re thankful that between the mayday and the collapse, that we had officials who were able to begin to stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not on the bridge,” Moore said. He called those officials heroes.
Moore noted that the bridge was up to code at the time of the collapse. He said the collapse was a “shocking and heartbreaking” event for the people of Maryland who have used the bridge for 47 years.

There’s a reason I’m not a big fan of conspiracy theories on the podcast, and it’s because they pop up so quickly while bodies are still in the water.
Right-wing pundits are baselessly linking the collapse of the bridge to DEI, immigration, and terrorism

There is some pretty shocking footage out there of the Baltimore bridge collapse early this morning. I've already seen some incredibly wrong, incredibly insensitive Hot Takes about how shitty the bridge was to have fallen after being bonked by a boat, etc
Please don't be that person.
The facts will come out. Speculation is silly. In addition to loss of life, the Francis Scott Key bridge was a major arterial in that region's highway system. Its loss will be felt for years, and not just to daily commuters.
Baltimore harbor is closed. No shipping at all. This will impact supply chains in ways we cannot even assess yet.
It's pretty fucked up.

Good to have confirmation from someone with more knowledge on this sort of thing that no bridge would hold up to that. I had concerns if this was an engineering fail at work as well.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore was struck by a cargo ship at 1:30 AM and collapsed. (video of the hit and the collapse in the link)
A small plus side - it’s the middle of the night on a weekday, so fewer cars would have been on the bridge. It could have been so much worse than it currently is, even though what it is is VERY bad. The Sunshine Skyway bridge only went partly down. That whole thing is GONE.
That said, there’s something noticeable different from the Sunshine Skyway collapse - no fog. From that video, aside from it being night, it doesn’t look as though anything would have obstructed the view of the crew. But it’s early yet, and everything’s speculation.
Here’s hoping by some miracle everybody makes it out alive.
