the issue with lying to jace was, he could typically see through the facade she’d spent years manufacturing to fool others. he knew her early on, at a time when she let him see the real version of herself, before she got caught in the whirlwind of pageantry and splendor. a world where outward appearances were everything and people turned their nose up at whatever rot and decay existed inside. nobody wanted to see the ugliness within — suffering wasn’t beautiful. “ i told you, ” i was in the neighborhood, but it’s at that moment she realizes she’s been caught in her own lie, that convenience of her whereabouts didn’t explain why she ordered food. there’s a moment of stillness as she catches his gaze, knowing from a single look he wouldn’t let her off the hook easy. “ okay, fine, ” agrees to offer him the truth, albeit begrudgingly, “ i was worried. ” can’t quite put her finger on why it feels so compromising to admit it .. maybe because she never liked the idea of being unwanted.
