the way i always sing it as D-I-Y-N-G instead of D-Y-I-N-G, she's just doing crafts with her beloved ghost

I think the lyric, “who’s gonna hold you like me?” contains the exact same brand of sadness that, “do the girls back home touch you like I do?” - Asking as if the answer is, “no one, obviously” but a tone of fear in her voice that suggests someone probably does. It’s a question that sounds like it SHOULD be rhetorical, but it’s a question she still feels like she has to ask. And it’s extra devastating when we know that the answer in the end wasn’t the one she was hoping for.

that comment about how you should not borrow grief from the future has saved me multiple times from spiraling into an inescapable state of anxiety. like every time i find myself thinking about how something in the future could go wrong i remember that comment and i think to myself: well i never know, it might get better. it might not even happen the way i think it will and if it does happen and it is sad and bad ill be sad about it then, when it happens. and it’s somehow soo freeing

For me, one of the subtexts/implications of Florida!!! is that Taylor was deeply dreading the public aspect of the imminent break up with Joe. This is further reinforced by knowing know this song was done in December 2022.

“And so I was out of the oven//And into the microwave//Out of the slammer and into a tidal wave” is actually the key to understanding the entire album and why it’s unclear which song is about which man

so high school is extra precious because it’s in contrast to songs like the tortured poets department. the latter is like “we work well because we’re both insane and crazy and stupid and miserable” but then so high school is like “you make me feel so normal. you make me feel like we’re high school sweethearts, which is so normal” it feels healing

while thank you aimee is a lot of lingering resentment over what kim did to her, “but when i count the scars, there’s a moment of truth: that there wouldn’t be this if there hadn’t been you” is a really mature lyric that i think gives us a lot of perspective on how she views 2016 (and maybe a little bit about her perspective on the sale of her masters). had 2016 never happened, reputation and its tour wouldn’t have ever happened, she wouldn’t have been pushed into healing after the absolute insanity that 1989 was, etc etc etc you all get it

this album genuinely shifted something in me like I know that sounds parasocial and unhinged but it truly did... and somehow for the better... like even though it is such a dark album I think just the fact that it illustrates that very bad things can just happen and they don't have to be defining characteristics of your life? you can just... quietly decide to keep living and see where that takes you... even if you're not 100% healed or 100% ok... there also doesn't need to be a huge celebration/salvation to make up for what you've lost... you can just be
i think there's so much quiet power in this. i posted this the first night and we never came back to it, but despite all the guilt and loathing and self-hatred, there's SO much self-respect all over this record. something can happen to you, and you can move forward. it doesn't have to be a big thing. you can just choose yourself and choose to be healthy and chase it.

it's so interesting that taylor ends midnights with dear reader. a song about how you should never take advice from someone who is falling apart. especially when you don't really know them at all. just to then release a whole album breaking down the walls that made her seem perfect and letting the reader into her actual world. (not to say her other albums weren't her. just more edited versions of her). it really is such a perfect transition song and one that is far more important than any of us ever could have realized i think
