How to Plot a Complex Novel in One Day
Tumblr media
Now first, I have to say, that the plot you’re able to come up with in one day is not going to be without its flaws, but coming up with it all at once, the entire story unfolds right in front of you and makes you want to keep going with it. So, where to begin?
What is your premise and basic plot? Pick your plot. I recommend just pulling one from this list. No plots are “original” so making yours interesting and complicated will easily distract from that fact, that and interesting characters. Characters will be something for you to work on another day, because this is plotting day. You’ll want the main plot to be fairly straight forward, because a confusing main plot will doom you if you want subplots.
Decide who the characters will be. They don’t have to have names at this point. You don’t even need to know who they are other than why they have to be in the story. The more characters there are the more complicated the plot will be. If you intend to have more than one subplot, then you’ll want more characters. Multiple interconnected subplots will give the illusion that the story is very complicated and will give the reader a lot of different things to look at at all times. It also gives you the chance to develop many side characters. The plot I worked out yesterday had 13 characters, all were necessary. Decide their “roles” don’t bother with much else. This seems shallow, but this is plot. Plot is shallow.
Now, decide what drives each character. Why specifically are they in this story? You can make this up. You don’t even know these characters yet. Just so long as everyone has their own motivations, you’re in the clear.
What aren’t these characters giving away right off the bat? Give them a secret! It doesn’t have to be something that they are actively lying about or trying to hide, just find something that perhaps ties them into the plot or subplot. This is a moment to dig into subplot. This does not need to be at all connected to their drive to be present in the story.  Decide who is in love with who, what did this person do in the 70’s that’s coming back to bite them today, and what continues to haunt what-his-face to this very day. This is where you start to see the characters take shape. Don’t worry much about who they are or what they look like, just focus on what they’re doing to the story.
What is going to change these characters? Now this will take some thinking. Everyone wants at least a few of the characters to come out changed by the end of the story, so think, how will they be different as a result of the plot/subplot? It might not be plot that changes them, but if you have a lot of characters, a few changes that are worked into the bones of the plot might help you.
Now list out the major events of the novel with subplot in chronological order. This will be your timeline. Especially list the historical things that you want to exist in backstory. List everything you can think of. Think about where the story is going. At this point, you likely haven’t focused too much on the main plot, yeah, it’s there, but now really focus on the rising actions, how this main plot builds its conflict, then the climactic moment. Make sure you get all of that in there. This might take a few hours.
Decide where to start writing. This part will take a LOT of thinking. It’s hard! But now that you’ve got the timeline, pick an interesting point to begin at. Something with action. Something relevant. Preferably not at the beginning of your timeline - you want to have huge reveals later on where these important things that happened prior are exposed. This is the point where you think about what information should come out when. This will be a revision of your last list, except instead of being chronological, it exists to build tension.
Once you’ve gotten the second list done, you’ve got a plot. Does it need work? Probably. But with that said, at this point you probably have no idea who half your characters are. Save that for tomorrow, that too will be a lot of work.

30 Days of Art Improvement Challenge
Are you tired of feeling like your art just isn’t improving? Do you want to do a 30-day challenge that’s actually useful? Welcome to 30 Days of Improvement Hell. >:D
I made this because I’ve been feeling super ‘blah’ about my art these days, and I needed something to kick-start myself. Who wants to do this with me!? Start now or whenever you can (now you procrastinators!). Challenge yourself and have fun at the same time!
Tag your posts with #Improvement Hell so everyone can follow along and see each other’s awesome artwork. I may even create a blog and reblog them! :D
What are you waiting for? START!
Self-Portrait - Introduce yourself
Draw a figure using a reference - link to reference
Draw a figure that’s in action, using a reference - link to reference
Draw a part of the human anatomy you have trouble with. x20, with atleast 5 being skeletal/musculature studies.
Draw more figures. Quick gestures and silhouettes. x20, with atleast 10 different body shapes
Let’s have some fun. Design a character from either This or This character generator! Be creative and bring something to life!
Pick the weirdest object in your house/room. Draw it. Shadows and Highlights.
Find 2-3 objects, make a scene with them. Draw it. Bonus points for creativity. Double points for dramatic lighting.
Draw a landscape of a place you’ve never been or drawn.
Draw a BG with 1pt Perspective. Negative points if it’s a railroad or an empty street.
Draw a BG with 2pt Perspective.
Look out a window. Draw what you see. Bonus points for adding something interesting.
Draw an interior setting with the character you designed on Day #6 in it.
BG with either bird’s eye or worm’s eye view.
Halfway there! Draw three ‘action’ scenes with different compositions in each. Quick sketches are fine, just make them interesting and understandable! Bonus points if it’s the same scene, but different composition.
Draw a single page comic with 5-7 panels (the story begins and ends on one page).
Draw an animal you’ve never drawn before. x10  Link references.
Draw a car. Negative points for whining. Hint: Use a perspective grid.
Think of the thing you hate drawing the most. Guess what? Draw it! Negative points for lying to yourself.
Pick an object in your house/room. Now design a character from it, using the shapes, forms, textures, purpose and colors as inspiration. Also link/post the object you used. Negative points for using a humanoid action figure.
Draw a character/object/scene, and shade them using ONLY solid blacks and whites. Bonus points for good use of lights/shadows
Draw a different object/scene/character. Shade using hatching, crosshatcing, and/or pointillism. Bonus points for lights/shadows and textures.
Colors! Pick a color palette, and paint a scene/character/object using only those colors (some blending allowed). Bonus points for good use of lights/shadows.
Draw and color a scene/object/character - no lines allowed! (aka - lineless art). Don’t forget light and shadows!
Draw a scene/character in a style you’ve never drawn before. If emulating an artist, credit+link. Bonus for color style.
Draw a character. Draw 10 emotions/expressions. Bonus points for 'uncommon’ emotions. (i.e. anxiety, guilt, despair, loneliness etc.)
Draw three random shapes using your opposite hand (or your foot). Now design characters from those shapes.
Turn on the tv (or load your illegally downloaded movies). Pick an actor and draw them.
Almost done! Let’s have some fun. Draw some fanart. Bonus points if it’s super obscure and unknown. Make people guess what it’s from.
Last day! Find a drawing you did within the last year. Now draw it again using what you’ve learned! Link it for comparison!
Look at all that amazing improvement! Congrats!
[Update] There is now a sequel challenge, Draw All The Things!

Let us normalise talking about mental health. Let us normalise feeling shitty and not okay. Let us normalise the fact that everyone goes through bad days. We should not hide, we should not pretend to be okay, we should not feel guilty when our mental health is not at a hundred per cent. It is normal and therefore we should normalise it. Mental health is a health issue, not a taboo topic. We should all be able to express our emotions, to say when we are not doing okay, to seek help from family, friends and professionals. It is about time that we realise that struggling with mental health does not make us attention seekers, does not make us weak, does not make us hopeless cases. In fact, pulling yourself through difficult times, being there for yourself and holding on despite the pain are signs of incredible strength which should be acknowledged. We. Need. To. Talk. About. It. NOW.

[Lmaoooo im not sure if this was even supposed to be a prompt, but it’s so hilarious and I can’t not write something for this xD]
tuesday afternoons (dazai osamu)
Tumblr media
For a Tuesday afternoon, it was awfully quiet in Armed Detective Agency’s office. The only sounds to be heard came from the clicking of keyboard keys, rustling of files, and occasional grumbling from Kunikida. There was also Ranpo snoring lightly somewhere in the background, but that just served as backdrop static at this point. You suppressed a yawn.
The only reason there is relative peace in the office is because Dazai isn’t here, you thought. You hadn’t seen him since last night, but he kept disappearing at odd times throughout the week, so there was nothing too unusual about that. Still, you found yourself wishing for his company, because it was a dull day for work and you were bored out of your mind.
Just then, the telephone rang, and Kunikida grumbled a little louder, “(Y/n), can you get that, please? I have my hands full.”
“Yeah, sure.” You said, getting up from where you were lounging on the couch. Anything to get away from this boredom.
In two quick steps, you bounded over to the phone and picked it up, “Hello, Armed Detective Agency offices.”
“Am I speaking to (y/n) (l/n)?”
The voice on the other end was deep and a bit raspy, and you frowned at their unusual tone, “You are, as a matter of fact. How can I help you?”
“We have your boyfriend.”
You paused for a second, “Dazai? What do you mean you ‘have’ him?”
“It means we’ve captured him, what else?” the voice scoffed.
“Is he hurt?”
“No. For the time being.” The person replied, calmly confident, “Now, if you want him ba – “
You snorted, “Boy, I sure do hope you’ve restrained him adequately.”
It was silent on the other end for a while. Whoever it was had clearly not been expecting you to say this of all things. “Y-yes, of course, we’ve got him tightly handcuffed. Now, shut up and listen carefully. If you – hey, what the fuck is so funny!?”
By now, you were shaking so hard with laughter that you were just about to fall off your chair. The person on the other end kept shouting threats, trying to get you to stop laughing long enough to pay attention to him. You wiped a couple of tears from the corner of your eye.
“Ah, man.” You finally managed to say, still fighting with vestiges of laughter. Putting the receiver back to your ear, you sighed, “It really isn’t your day, is it?.”
“….What? What is wrong with you!? I’m being serious, this man is going to die if – “
“I’m being serious too, shithead.” You said severely, straightening yourself into sitting position, “So, listen up. You don’t have Dazai. He has you. I don’t know how you were stupid enough to go after him of all people, but good luck, morons.”
With that, you slammed the receiver down, and let out a long, drawn out sigh. Kunikida glanced up at you from his desk.
“What was that all about?”
You waved a hand dismissively, “Dazai got kidnapped again.”
“On a Tuesday?”
You snorted, “Exactly. It’s really isn’t these guys’ day, and I said as much to them.”
Tuesdays were mushroom days for Dazai, and hell for everyone else.
“Whatever.” Kunikda muttered, going back to typing, “I just hope he’s back by 4, we have a case to look into.”
“Don’t worry.” You said in a bored tone, stalking back to the couch and sprawling yourself on it once more, “We have a lunch date before that. He’s not going to miss it.”
