Danny's Top 5 Fallout 3 Mods

So, if you know me then you know I love modding Fallout and Elder Scrolls games. If you don't know me... I love modding Fallout and Elder Scrolls games. I could sit here and compile my top 100 mods, (which I really should do some time because a lot of the current "top" lists for mods out there don't have a lot of the newer and more immersion expanding mods on them) but I'll just got with some top fives now. I'm going to do a series that will feature mods from Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and the Elder Scrolls games. 

So let's get started.

Fallout Wanderer's Edition

This mod is a must. It's a complete overhaul of basically every element of gameplay in Fallout 3. When you install this, the game is not only more challenging, but there are a lot of subtle improvements that you'll notice that just make the game more enjoyable. For instance, they've added a grenade hotkey (the "G" key, of course) that will allow you to use your throwable weapons at the touch of a button, rather than have to go into your Pipboy and equip them. It brings a true FPS feel to one of the best FPS games of all time. 

The mod also makes a BUNCH of changes to the combat system. We're talking a complete rebalance of stats, hit chances, critical chances, movement speed, everything. Combat now feels more natural and more realistic. No more shooting someone in the head 5 times without them even so much as staggering. 

NMC's Texture Pack

This is another absolute must. This NMC guy has gone and made CUSTOM textures for nearly everything in the game, and they're all HD. If you have good enough hardware in your machine, then you DEFINITELY want to grab this. Fallout 3 will look a million times better than it did the first time you played it, and if you've never played it before, well... install this anyway because honestly after using this I think the original game's textures are shit in comparison.

Children of the Wasteland

One of the things I've always loved about the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games is just how much more realistic they are than any other game I've ever played. However, the fact that kids are invincible and never die in as harsh an environment as the Capitol Wasteland really takes away from said realism. This mod not only allows kids to become mortal, but it also let's you actually play as a child character. This brings a whole new level of realism to the game. You could start out in the Vault as a kid, and then throughout your quest, (with a little console-fu and knowledge of how to use the race menu) you could watch your character age into an adult. You could theoretically live out an entire lifetime in the game.

Destruction

Another thing that takes away from the amazing realism of Fallout 3 is the fact that it lacks a lot in the department of destructable environments. This mod changes that, at least a little bit. Now you can actually shoot bottles and watch them shatter, smash crates with your ripper into pieces, and see bullet decals applied to places where they weren't before. A really overlooked but very neat mod.

Wearable Backpack

Of all the things you would think the devs would've put in any of the Fallout or ES games, you'd never guess they wouldn't throw one of these in. I mean you're running around the wastes collecting all this shit and you're just supposed to fit it all into the pockets of your Vault Tech jumpsuit? Bitch please. This mod adds a few backpacks you can buy from vendors that not only add to the visual immersion of the game, but they also increase your carry weight depending on the quality of the backpack.

Even the original version is a beautiful game. Too bad it stutters so badly that it's unplayable on AMD cards. Oh well, have to save up and get the Redux version. This is from my first attempt at trying to get Metro: 2033 to work on my R7260X. AMD just doesn't like PhysX, though. Still a beautiful shot.
