Emergency! Fandom Intro
A/N: Not really an “intro” per se because I’ve been here for a while, but I found this, and I thought I’d answer a few formal introduction questions!
OP: @johnnys-green-pen  ... an amazing blog that you should totally check out!
1. How’d you find this show and the fandom? How long have you been here?
My mom grew up in the 70s and Emergency! was her favorite show growing up. It inspired her so much that she’s been a paramedic pretty much all my life! I started watching Emergency! when I was like six. As far as the fandom, I just kind went searching through the tags on here and found the community!
2. What made you stick around?
I just love the people in this fandom! It’s a small community, but I love it.
3. Who’s your favorite character?
Johnny. Has been since day one.
4. Are you a shipping kind of person? If yes, what are your favorite ships?
Ehhhh. Not particularly a shipper. Platonically, though, Roy and John.
5. Favorite moment/scene/quote? Yes, you can pick more than one.
• One scene that stands out to me is when Dr. Morton is talking to the singer who overdosed on tranquilizers and she’s talking about how her career is finished and he tells her that he doesn’t believe that it is — it always touched me idk.
• Another is the episode with the big brushfire (Season 3) and Roy is talking to the wife of the fireman who got badly hurt and she says to Roy: “What’s worse than a complaining wife?” And Roy says, “A wife that doesn’t care.” — that one always makes me tear up.
• In season 2, the episode called “Seance” has a scene where they repeatedly report to a house of this couple where the wife thinks her dead sister is haunting them (I won’t get into it) but during one call, the husband asks Johnny and Roy to scope out the house and it’s always been funny to me because they’re actually scared they’ll find a ghost.
6. Do you have a favorite episode? Feel free to pick one per season if you can’t decide.
• Season 1: “Botulism”
• Season 2: “Virus”
• Season 3: “Snakebite”
• Season 4: “Smoke Eater”
• Season 5: “Involvement” and “The Nuisance” -- I couldn’t pick just one.
• Season 6: “Loose Ends”
7. Most underrated character, either among the fandom or one of the writers never utilized to their full potential?
I would say either Stoker or Morton. I know Stoker wasn’t really intended to be a main character but I just always liked him and his occasional lines/appearances. Morton I feel like had a few episodes where he really shined but I think they totally could’ve done more with him.
8. One thing you’d have liked to see more (or less) of in the show?
ROY’S PERSONAL LIFE!!!! We hear about Joanne and the kids ALL THE TIME and I think we see her like once. I would’ve loved an episode where Joanne or one of the kids are a main plot point.
9. Do you have a fanwork recommendation for us? Fic, art, video, whatever?
I wish. I hardly can find any fan work :(
10. Any fanworks you’d like to see?
Literally all of it. I’m also involved in the Harry Potter fandom and I’ve been spoiled with the endless amount of content there.
11. Any favorite headcanons you’d like to tell us about?
Brackett has a pet turtle.
12. Free space! Anything else you’d like to mention!
This was fun, and I love this fandom <3

Random E! Thoughts: S6E10 -Welcome to Santa Rosa County
Johnny and Roy going on vacation together
JOHNNY AND ROY GOING ON VACATION TOGETHER
One of them apparently offered Chet to come with them and Chet refused to be the third wheel lmao
Cap’s fish phobia
Johnny stealing Cap’s food
Johnny stealing Cap’s food
Right out of his hand
It’s weirdly soft
Those introductory nature shots seem so chill
and Roy and Johnny at the lake arguing like an old married couple
and it’s somehow still such a relaxed, casual scene
Johnny admiring the scenery
“you’re too trusting, that’s your problem”
Johnny complaining about his fishing rod
Honestly, every word these two say to each other in this episode is an absolute gem
This episode has such fanfic vibes
Johnny following the sheriff “on instinct”
I love how Johnny handles so much of the logistics of that climbing rescue - I love it when he’s competent at stuff like that.
It’s also fun to watch the sheriff admire their work - they don’t get that experience nearly often enough
It’s generally a really neat episode - and I have a hunch that it was kinda supposed to provide a template for how to get better emergency medicine to rural places. It’s always fun when this show goes “look, this is how it could be done”.
Johnny out of breath as heck after dragging the boat guy out of the water.
The somewhat questionable way they get certified (nepotism, yay?)
Rampart’s reaction to the questionable way they got certified
Brackett going “I don’t love it - that could get messy” followed by “let’s BOTH do it”. It’s just a very him thing to do.
Cap complaining bitterly about the fish.
“you know what you can DO with that trout, don’t ya” - “Cap, don’t say it.” Lmao
Johnny teasing Cap with the fish like the lil’ shit he is.

Random E! Thoughts: S6E12 -Loose Ends
Dix at 51′s
Dix snuggling with Henry
The entire exchange about the firemen’s picnic is golden - Dix’s scheming is what Johnny wishes he could pull off, lmao
That entire first rescue is amazing
That first moment where Johnny realizes that the driver doesn’t have a pulse
The way he continues like nothing’s wrong so the girl doesn’t freak out
The way he looks, as per usual, about ten years younger than he has any right to while talking to Cap
Both Johnny and Roy being shaken when they realize the other vic’s Brackett
Roy’s forlorn little “tell me?”
Nobody at this rescue is okay and it’s amazing
Nobody at Rampart is okay either
Morton telling Dix that Brackett’s been injured, but not that it doesn’t seem serious, the absolute genius.
Brackett already keeps reaching for something to hang on to on the ambulance ride, and Roy steadfastly ignores him
Meanwhile, Johnny sees him reach out and immediately takes his hand
which, by the way, I adore
There’s something in there about how both of them are pretty tactile people, and Johnny has intimate knowledge of how fucking terrible it is to end up in that treatment room like Brackett is.
ALSO, my usual “character growth, yay!” comment regarding Brackett
imagine telling pilot movie-Brackett that Johnny’d be holding his hand, even if just for a moment, and both of them would be comfortable with that.
Whatever Chet’s having for lunch, it looks like he’s got it arranged into a smiley face
Johnny’s utterly Done “oh boy” when Chet starts cracking jokes
Brackett hating hospitals just as much as Johnny does
Brackett also being just as good at blaming himself for things as Roy is
No wonder he doesn’t get along with them in the beginning, it’s gotta be like looking into a mirror
Brackett getting back into bed with his shoes still on
Johnny turning up the charm as soon as Roy offers to get them something to eat
Roy just accepting that he’s gonna treat Johnny to lunch
tfw you KNOW that them patching in that police officer is a second take, because there’s already a mark from the electrodes on his lower chest, lmao
Brackett still wearing the same shirt he was brought in in
The blood on it is gone though, so somebody must’ve washed in for him
Brackett being extremely upset about Tina being left to fend for herself
I love that she talk to him
probably realizes that Brackett’s beating himself up over the whole thing and doesn’t like to see people suffer any more than he does
I have a headcanon that he ends up being something of a bonus uncle to her
“Somebody throw me a knife” how about nobody throw you a knife, Johnny
The one time Johnny wins at something, he was trying to take second place, because of course.
Dix convincing Joe to get them both tickets and meaningfully raising an eyebrow at Johnny when it immediately works
Johnny being disappointed, until he realizes that he’s gonna go to Vegas
his first, immediate, instant reaction is to whirl around and ask Roy to come with him
He seems so excited about that, I love it

Random E! Thoughts: S6E16 - Family Ties
Chet losing his badge for the umpteenth time. EXTREMELY relatable, imo.
A big ol “boooo” for the tired “mother in law” tropes
I like the young female med student, and I also like how supportive Brackett is here. It very much feels like the show making a kinda anvil-y point about ~women doctors~ existing (or going to be existing or whatever), but heck, I’ll take unsubtly present women in TV over nonexistent ones any day.
Johnny blabbing about Roy’s family secrets
“Bill!” “No, Chet.” “’s a bill, Chet” cracks me up every single time
Johnny has enough experience with Roy’s MIL to pull out The Voice
Chet immediately blabbing to Roy
Johnny’s deliberately cutesy “here’s a letter~” which is a tone he does occasionally pull out when he’s pissed off someone he likes
Chet’s leaps of logic
The whole Acapulco sideplot is an Experience
Dix immediately calling them out on their bullshit
Johnny motioning Chet to hand him a tomato slice, and then stealing Chet’s tomato slice off of his plate while he isn’t looking
why
Johnny’s “I think you can give up, now” after Mike goes “The best you can do is learn to live with it”
Also, “go ahead, Stokes”
Joe and Kel fighting because they both wanna be The Better Person so badly
Dix being immensely done with them
Everybody’s reactions to Roy’s threat of getting a mustache
Everything about Cap in this scene
The way he rattles down a list of actors and then seamlessly goes “Beef Wellington!” at Marco
“You’re going to Acapulco, case closed.” “NO! Case reopened!”
Goddamn children, the both of them
Dix deciding that they’re BOTH going
Mike Morton supporting them both going
(also, mutters something about My Other OT3 here)
Johnny showing up after all the action is already over, and his amazingly confused expressions
Chet being yeeted into the tree and reacting like he does that at least twice a week
Cap immediately jumping to get him out of the tree again
Chet sitting down and Johnny immediately going “!!”
Roy’s immense joy at getting a nice afternoon with Joanne instead of the Mother-In-Law From Hell

Random E! Thoughts: S6E17 - Bottom Line
Marco talking to Henry
“That Morton’s becoming a real pain in the-” “hOW CLEAN ARE YOUR FEET”
Also, Cap being Captain Dad
I love that so much
(the answer is “pretty clean”, from the looks of it, “but never clean enough for the dinner table”)
Let’s get the Morton thing figured out first
I mean, out-of-universe they needed to make a point, and Brackett’s had too much of his character arc to really use HIM for that. Joe Early wasn’t an option for characterization reasons… so they could either toss Morton into it or give us another Random Intern We’d Never Seen Before.
Honestly, I’d rather see Morton get more screentime than another random intern, even if his characterization is kinda dodgy.
Now, in-universe I like to think that Something Happened - Morton’s not a bad person, and he and Johnny in particular usually get along pretty damn well by this point, so something’s up.
Maybe he’s lost a patient to one of those one-in-a-million chances recently. Maybe he’s been chewed out about a lack of procedure. Maybe he’s had a training session recently that had the whole “better safe than sorry” drilled into all of them and it’s still fresh in his mind.
Somebody should write fic about that
Johnny and Roy (and Brackett) talking after that bogus follow-up is interesting
Roy going “we should talk to Brackett about it” versus Johnny’s “won’t do anything; it’s The System”. I figure Johnny’d know.
Roy praising Johnny’s “how safe is safe” line
Brackett mediating
Brackett moving the lamp out of the way so he can actually see Johnny. Dunno why, but that just gets Me
The Vince Scene
Johnny, once again, seeing a gun and throwing himself right at it
Johnny definitely not being okay, what with that squeaky little “he damn neat shot me with this thing!”
The way he tosses the gun aside. Gun Safety Who?
His slightly shaky “Roy?”
“We picked up a hamburger on the way in”
They KNEW it was dinner time
Roy all but says that he blames himself for the whole Vince thing
That was 100% an Apology Hamburger
Johnny, still sounding slightly Off, more subdued and quiet
Roy, who won’t stop looking at Johnny, never taking his eyes off of him, also so goddamn quiet
“I wouldn’t worry about it too much, I mean, that sort of thing happens” - “Yeah, I just don’t like that kinda thing happening to me” and the soft way Roy says that
Nope, neither of them’s truly okay, I’d say
Also, the whole “it’s much simpler to be dumb” - “You mean ignorance is bliss?” exchange
Sure, the episode wants us to side with Roy
but I think Johnny has a point here. That’s DIFFERENT.

Duty Calls
John Gage x Fem. Reader
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1.2k
“I don’t know if we’ll be that lucky,”
Tumblr media
It had been one of the most perfect, peaceful evenings that the two of you had been able to have in awhile. Having crazy, stressful jobs didn’t present you the opportunity of having a night to yourselves very often. It sometimes felt like having the exact same days off was a bit of an impossible dream. It felt like you always worked on the same days, but never had the same days off.
That’s why you were elated when it so happened that your schedules aligned for once. You both were able to catch the new episode of Adam-12 that the two of you had been meaning to see as well as grabbed dinner from your favorite Italian joint. You didn’t really care what you decided to do, as long as you had some well deserved time together.
Nights in your apartment were usually so lonely and kind of boring. That’s why you always took advantage of when he was able to spend the nights with you, because it always felt so much more like home when he was there. You had basically declared an immediate date night and non-interrupted weekend...unless duty called.
And duty did indeed call.
As a nurse and a paramedic, it sometimes felt like you were never really off the clock. The bed underneath you had been soft and a perfect solution for your tired bones. You had been snuggled up against him in your bed, his arms securely wrapped around you to keep you from straying too far from him. His shirtless frame was warm against you and comforting. Whenever he stayed over, he had to be sure to bring his radio in case he was ever called in. It was never a nice feeling to be awakened by the sound of a blaring alarm at 5:00 in the morning.
He woke first, the sound causing him to flinch harshly. For a second, he thought he was at the station and his initial confusion caused his heart to speed up a bit. He remembered that he had stayed the night with you, causing a smirk to spread on his face. He pressed a quick kiss to your forehead before gently pushing you off of him to keep from waking you as he listened to the dispatcher’s voice.
You stirred awake at the familiar sound despite Johnny’s attempt to keep you asleep. You lifted your head and peered up at John who was up and getting dressed now.
“Johnny? What time is it?” You asked groggily.
His heart skipped a beat at the sound of your delicate morning voice, a small chuckle escaping his chest at the sight of your tousled hair.
“About 5:00. I’m sorry, sweetheart. I’ve gotta go.” He apologized, wishing he could stay just a little bit longer.
He knew that you understood that it wasn’t his fault. Still, he knew you were disappointed, because he was just as let down as you were.
“It’s okay. It must be something big if they’re calling all units,” You noted, watching as he pulled on his pants from the night before. “I wonder if they’ll call in extra hands for the hospital.”
As if on cue, your telephone in the next room began to ring. You made a guess that it was Dixie calling as many nurses as she could get a hold of at this hour. You leapt out of the comfort of your bed in your long t-shirt and scuttled to the coffee table in the living room where you kept your phone. Johnny slipped into his button down shirt (also from the night before), catching your side of the conversation.
“Hello? Uh-huh...Are you serious?...I’ll be there as quick as I can...Yep, see you then.”
You set the phone back on the hook, now fully energized as to what was going to meet you at Rampart.
“That was Dixie. They’re calling everyone that can come in.” You said, retreating to your closet to get dressed.
John buttoned his shirt. He’d have to meet Roy at the station before heading to the scene, so he’d change into his uniform there. His brows furrowed in thought.
“Huh. I wonder what’s happened. Did she say?” He asked curiously.
You nodded as you jumped and wiggled into a pair of jeans, buttoning and zipping them before answering.
“Apparently some big explosion up in the hills caused a huge fire. She said the ER is flooded and they need every available person on deck.” You explained, putting on your socks and shoes.
Feeling your medical training and adrenaline kicking in, the two of you went from relaxed to rushing to get ready in seconds.
“I wonder if they’ll put us around the clock.” John wondered to you in the bathroom. You pulled your hairbrush through your hair, looking at yourself in the mirror.“I wouldn’t doubt it. Hopefully not as long as the last time.” You replied.
Johnny grimaced with a distressed grunt.
“Oh, don’t even say that. We were on call for days!” He recalled. “I never thought I’d see my apartment again.”
He slipped his feet into his own shoes as well as grabbed his radio, wallet, and keys. Just as you pulled your sweater over your head from coming out of the bathroom, you stood in front of him in the living room. He looked at you, taking the time to pull you into him.
“I guess I owe you another weekend.” He joked.
“I think I owe you one as well,” You laughed lightly, resting your hands on the fronts of his shoulders. “We’ll make it up if we’re lucky. I’m sure of it.”
“I sure hope so. Maybe next Friday we’ll be able to catch what happens to Malloy and Reed,” He said, referring to his beloved Adam-12 characters. “They really ended that episode on a cliffhanger.”
“I don’t know if we’ll be that lucky.” You snorted.
You both had a ritual where if the other had to suddenly get up and leave for work, you always noted where you needed to pick up where you left off for the next time. Not that you ever actually remembered, but it was a funny gesture. It made the other feel like they had something to look forward to...it kept you motivated.
“Let’s see...so your apartment, 5:00 AM, just you and me...” He recited.
His arms were still around you, not wanting to let you go. You nodded with a smile.
“Mmhm. If nothing else, I think we should have a decent breakfast together,” You mewled. “Pancakes, non-hospital brand coffee, bacon...”
He groaned with a low whistle.“You are too good to me.”A quick silence fell over the both of you. You looked up at him with a content, but slightly concerned expression.
“Look out for yourself and for Roy. Please be safe out there.” You said just above a whisper. He smiled softly, kissing you briefly.
“Yes ma’am,” He said cheekily. “You too, yeah? I’ll see you later on today I’m sure.”
You nodded, kissing him once more before you broke off to your respective destinations. You knew you’d see him later, but even that wasn’t enough. You surely had wished you could’ve had your weekend, but you supposed that was the life of a nurse and a medic.
Interrupted weekend and unfinished cups of coffee.

Elevator Chat
----------
Tumblr media
Ding!
John raised an eyebrow in intrigue as the elevator doors opened. He couldn't remember the last time he'd seen it so packed. Shrugging to himself, he slipped in, pushing the button for first floor which surprisingly hadn't been pushed yet. He casually slipped his hands into his pockets as the doors slid closed.
What a mess of a scene they responded to half an hour ago. John wasn't a fan of it, and he had some sort of gut feeling that it would escalate rather fast, with worse side effects. Turns out he was right. Between seeing couples fight so many times and failing to impress any girl, maybe it was a sign to rethink his stance on marriage.
The doors swung open, and an older lady on the elevator slipped past John and out onto the floor. No one else looked to be getting on, so he settled back into his thoughts.
He was sure Roy saw how he reacted to the whole thing. The unease of watching them fight, flipping open the biophone roughly and snapping the antennae out harder than necessary. He was dreading having to explain it--hopefully he didn't ask. There was just a lot of bad in this world he wasn't a fan of.
The paramedic spotted movement out of the corner of his eye, and he looked over and down in bored interest. There was a kid right by his side, staring at his utility pouch in what John could only describe as fascination.
The elevator stopped again, and a man slipped out of the elevator as a nurse got on and took her spot on the left side.
John chuckled to himself as the kid continued to stare, clearly not bothered by anything else around him.
"Pretty cool, huh?" He questioned in a casual voice.
The kid didn't seem to care that he'd been noticed, instead looking up at John and nodding with eagerness, a smile on his face.
"They all look pretty dangerous." The kid commented. "But cool!"
Kids sometimes had a way with words while managing to use so little of them. The innocence they demonstrated always managed to work its way to John's heart.
The elevator doors opened again, this time letting two people out. Only two more floors to go before the first.
"You don't hurt people with 'em, do you?" The kid commented, poking the paramedic's tools. John shifted his hand out of his pocket, softly planting it on his pouch.
Enjoying the teaching moment, John shook his head in a playful way.
"Nope. Matter 'a fact, I use 'em to rescue and help people."
The elevator stopped at the second floor, letting an older man in.
John raised his right hand to his chin in mock deep thought.
"Come to think of it, I've helped a lotta people." He cracked a crooked grin. "Kids are always the best to help."
The kid broke into a big grin, raising his fists to his face in excitement.
"That's so cool! You gotta be a hero or something!"
John landed a hand on the boy's shoulder, patting it twice. Both shared an equally enthusiastic smile.
"Maybe I am, huh?"
Ding!
The elevator stopped moving, the doors to the first floor opening. John moved his hand from the kid's shoulder to his head, giving it a friendly couple of pats before exiting the elevator. He missed the kid excitedly waving goodbye to him as he headed towards Roy.
Yes, there was a lot of bad in the world, John surmised. That didn't mean there wasn't any good still left.

“Did he present anything unusual?” “No, strictly flulike symptoms. Why, is he back?” “Mhm.” “Pneumonia.” “No, he has some neck pain and stiffness, and some paralysis in the legs.” “Coxsackie, the A7?” “That’s a possibility. We were considering paralytic polio.” “Polio!”
